“He Called Him The Hard R”: Sub Teacher Who Knocked Out Student Receives Support Amid Racial Slur

A white student who allegedly called a substitute teacher the N-word racist slur ended up in a physical altercation that left him seemingly knocked out, prompting a police arrest and the termination of the school staff member.

27-year-old Re’Kwon Smith was arrested by The Clark County School District (CCSD) Police Department on Thursday (April 25) after engaging in a fist fight with the alleged racist student at Valley High School in Las Vegas, USA.

Highlights
  • 27-year-old substitute teacher Re'Kwon Smith was arrested after a physical fight with a student at Valley High School, in Las Vegas.
  • The altercation began after the student allegedly used a racist slur towards Smith, escalating to a physical confrontation.
  • The incident resulted in Smith's termination from Clark County School District's substitute pool and arrest on battery charges.

Sources told local outlet News 3 that the brawl started at around 9:30 a.m. when a verbal argument escalated between Smith and the teenager, who was accused of using racial slurs towards Smith.

The alleged discriminatory insult provoked Smith to react by punching the teen, who has not been named, and starting the fist fight, according to CCSD sources.

There have since been a few clips of the incident emerging online, with one showcasing Smith swinging and hitting the student to the ground.

Other videos taken from different angles have shown the boy actively engaging in the altercation, throwing punches back and forth.

On the popular Vegas.bartender Instagram account, notable for sharing viral content from the region, a video was shared that showed a close-up of the confrontation and the moment the student was knocked out.

An Instagram user who claims to attend Valley High School told his side of the story, commenting: “This is my school and it literally just happened today.

“There’s a lot of words and rumor going around but I’ll sum it up the best I can.

“According to my weightlifting coach (a friend and co-worker of Coach Smith) the student exited the gym through the side door which prompted Coach Smith to go after him in the hallway.

“However, and this is what everyone is saying, the student called the coach the Hard R which led to the altercation.

“Wasn’t too sure what happened with both, but from what I’ve heard the kid was in handcuffs.”

Various online videos depicted the altercation, including one where the student was knocked to the ground

In videos, as the student continued to lie on the ground, Smith was filmed stepping to the side and saying, “You lost your mind, boy.”

The student reportedly replied, “You’re going to jail,” and he included a racial slur.

Other parts of certain clips revealed nearby students attempting to help the knocked-out teen up to his feet as a whistle started to blow in the background and a Campus Security Monitor in a red shirt and hat appeared.

The CCSD has since released a statement, which read: “CCSD does not tolerate violence of any kind.

“Violence in any form is unacceptable and goes against the fundamental principles of education and respect.

“Any altercation between a teacher and a student is thoroughly investigated, and appropriate disciplinary action is taken.”

A student alleged the fight began when the student used a racial slur toward the staff member

A letter to Valley High School families confirmed the altercation, stating that they “are aware of an altercation involving a staff member and a student,” as per News 3.

“The information is preliminary, however, please know that CCSDPD is investigating the matter. Once we have information to share we will be sure to update our community,” the statement further noted.

The police reportedly booked Smith into the Clark County Detention Center on charges related to battery with substantial bodily harm and disturbance of school.

Moreover, CCSD reportedly said Smith was a substitute assigned to Valley High School and has been employed by the District since November 2023.

He will consequently be removed from CCSD’s substitute pool, and he is no longer eligible to serve as a substitute in the District.

The incident left people divided on social media

Two people learned a lesson. The kid learned that using racially slurs, especially the N word, will eventually lead to you laying unconscious on the ground with your face all over the internet. The now-former teacher learned to not beat up a minor, as he is in jail facing felony charges, may go to prison, and won't ever work a job requiring a clean record again.

Your kidding me with the responses right? I am sure the kid was a jerk and said the slur, that is really messed up and should not be tolerated. But you don't respond with violence. I thought we were all in agreement that beating children for their mistakes is a bad thing now? And even more importantly this is not 2 kids fighting this is an ADULT fighting a CHILD.

I'm conflicted. I don't condone violence against children but this "kid" is nearly an adult, knows well enough what is and isn't acceptable, and he chose to be a giant piece of shìt. Maybe he'll learn his lesson from this? I hope so cuz if he were an adult, he very well would have ended up beaten to death.

Whether the student deserved it or not, the fact is that a teacher struck a student, hard enough to knock them down. As a grown man, the teacher should know better than the react violently, ESPECIALLY against a minor. He will likely never teach again in this district and now have a criminal record because he didn't just drag this kid to the principal's office.

Kids feel empowered to attack teachers because they know they'll get away with just a slap on the wrist. It has gone from one extreme (corporal punishment when I was at school) to another, with students doing the assaulting. After watching the video, I hope the teacher doesn't get banned from teaching altogether.

I completely agree. When I was 6 years old I had a monster of a teacher who would paddle kids with a wooden board for missing words on a spelling test. Considering I grew up in a very abusive household it made my life a terror filled hell. Now the extreme opposite is fostered with different but also horrible results.

This is what happens when school districts are so desperate for subs that they start taking anyone with a high school diploma. Actual teachers are trained on how to respond to student misbehavior and how to manage a classroom. It's not always easy but no actual teacher I know would ever think that striking a student was acceptable. If this had happened in my school the student would have gotten a referral and probably got suspended or at the minimum in school suspension. The teacher would be expected to respond calmly and make it a teachable moment or a chance to model how to handle negative emotions appropriately. And before anyone comes at me, no I'm not saying every teacher does this every time because we are human and we lose our temper but at the most that should mean shouting at a kid not hitting them.

First, what is it about this post or the substitute that indicates to you that he does not have a college degree? Secondly, the sub was clearly not at his best and having a human moment. The 17-year-old "kid" is old enough to know and deliberately inflamed the situation by calling the sub one of the most heinous racial slurs imaginable while at his place of work and in front of other people. It's degrading and emasculating. He may as well have called him "boy." Maybe you can extend the same humanity you extend to your fellow teachers regardless of educational status.

Classic case of ESH. Can't condone slurs, but also can't condone violence from an authority figure (whether they're a minor or not, really). The fact that he's a minor makes it even worse for sure though. The kid certainly should have paid consequences, and he did have some massive natural consequences here, but the teacher needn't to have faced consequences as well. He was the victim, and he created another victim with his actions.

The teacher's response to the slur was immature, and justified termination. However, I can't help but wonder if the little shìt will see this incident as a feather in his cap. "Hey, I got a teacher fired; who's next?" Unless the administration steps up and corral these out-of-control brats, the next altercation might involve not fisticuffs, but a firearm.

The teacher had no right to act upon the student with violence. Doing so violates the student's unalienable rights, such as his right to property which encompasses all the things you own down to your own body and health. The infringement of unalienable rights of another could not be tolerated unless the second person has actively infringed upon the rights of the first, and in that case, violence would be an acceptable, just act in self-defense. However, in this example, the teacher's actions are highly irrational and not a decision out of self defense to protect his individual rights and property. Instead, it is out of emotion, such as anger. Even though the student called the teacher racist slurs, he has not infringed upon the teacher's rights. I am not saying what the student has done is okay, I am saying that the student's actions never deserved an act of violence from an adult. This is a view on this issue as objective as possible with support from the original Constitution.

Anyone who thinks the sub was justified is nuts. He will likely get a felony conviction and a custodial sentence. He’s also unemployable. Kids will say things to make teachers and staff angry. They’ve won when they get a reaction and boy, this guy gave the kid a reaction. All the awful teachers you remember from school? They are the ones who couldn’t control their emotions and reactions. The ones with control are able to discipline kids much more effectively.

Some are assuming he punched the kid because he was called a slur. I think he punched the kid because he tried to be a little bad a// in front of his homies and the teacher wasn’t having it. Bottom line, if a so called child doesnt want to get hit, then he or she had better not raise his or her hand to an adult or anyone else. I would rather this teacher fight back than sit there and get hit like the teacher a couple of weeks ago. Students attacking teachers should be unacceptable. Kick this kid out and make him get a GED, if he can.

It seems that neither party was in the right in any way, but the sub was certainly in the wrong for violent retaliation. Yet as we see so often lately, I feel this incident is evidence of backtracking on the whole racial divide and other problems we've been through before, and it frightens me to know that these troubles are returning at a faster pace than they receded a few decades ago. And yes, I largely blame uncaring and irresponsible parenting. It's a scourge with no clear cure.

I saw the ENTIRE video and it didn't look anything like this account at all. What I saw was a white student aggressively going after another student when the teacher intervened to stop him. That prompted out-of-control student to attack the teacher instead. The teacher responded the way he did to protect the other students from the maniac. Good for him, pin a medal on his chest.

The kid shouldn't have called the teacher racial slurs or any other bad names. He should be at the very least suspended, but he was fighting as well and most schools have zero tolerance when it comes to fighting. He might be expelled. The teacher is old enough to have known better. He shouldn't have responded with violence, regardless of who threw the first punch. As much as the words angered him he should have remained calm and sent the kid to detention if that's still a thing. The teacher should have talked to the principal or something. He just ruined his career. I don't think any school district will hire him with that arrest on his record even if the charges are dropped (unlikely).

For those thinking self defence, it isn't. He struck the pupil while they were on the ground and posing no risk. And as a teacher, at least in the UK, you can't defend yourself by using violence. I've worked with many pupils who works say horrible things and no matter what, you can't resort to violence. If threatened, you can use physical restrain but have to be able to justify why you did. Sorry to say it, but for this teacher, his time working with pupils is over.

First question: who threw the first punch? Also: why the emphasis on "white" student? The kid looks Hispanic, which technically is largely white, but yeah, the news story hits different when it's between two minorities, and the author/editor knows this or else they wouldn't put "white." Also, I just have to add: teachers absolutely have the right to defend themselves, and EVEN if this teacher crossed a line in the conduct of the fight, if that kid threw the first punch, he should never be allowed in a daytime, normal-admission program again. (Note on ethnicity: it's hard to be certain from skin color, but if this kid isn't Hispanic, he's gone through great lengths to blend in with Clark County's Hispanic majority.)

What does "hard R" mean. The headline says he called the teacher the hard R word but then said he said the N word but what is the hard R word? This doesn't make sense.

If you have to fight people because you were called a name, congratulations you're the weakest of our society.

Completely agree, whilst the pupil may have said something horrible, teacher's can never, and should never, resort to violence.

It’s real convenient how people keep leaving out the fact that the racist kid swung at the substitute teacher first. After he had already called him a N****r, which makes it a hate crime and self-defense. But people keep cutting the full video.

Good for him, pin a medal on his chest.

thats why i went on a downward spiral, i work in social services and been spat on, shat on, pissed on, humiliated verbally and been physically attacked by minors. i would never hit one of the kids i am to protect but i've managed to develop a severe depression. i am not going to go back to my job, i wake up crying at night, i have nightmares, i feel sick when i even think of working one more day in this environment. i am seeking professional help and i am looking for a better job.

That’s a full grown man fighting a child because he called you a word?? Suspend him, give him detention but you certainly don’t fight him. If the kid gets violent, you be the adult and walk away and get security.

I think people thinking this is OK "because words" are (words that will get me banned for sure). teacher hitting a student should be arrested, banned permanently. very simple. can't believe so many people think physical attack in fine when someone is insulted. wonder what their position will be if their kid throw the wrong words at the wrong guy one day.

It looks like that kid may have come out swinging. If true, I think the teacher had the right to defend himself.

I'm so glad to hear that all forms of violence is unacceptable. This means bother physical violence, AND *verbal violence*.

Sounds like the little punk deserved it. No kid should be saying that word in the year 2024! That being said, there are better ways to solve things that don't involve hand to hand combat.

Dude is 17 not 7. My 7 year old knows that some words aren't to be said unless you want to suffer the consequences of saying said word. Seems like people need to stop defending bad behavior from these "kids". They will never learn and continue to do and say what they want until a hero (like this teacher) steps up. WE ARE TIRED OF YALL SHT!

Unfortunately not, at least not with violence (UK based). Also the fact that he punched the kid when he was on the ground means he was not defending himself but attacking.
