I'll never get how ANYONE could still think or communicate that owning *more* guns would make schools a safer place. How obvious does it get?

What a depressing graph, and still many of them think it's a good thing to be able to get a gun relatively easily.

Looking at history, the guns make sense. People "conquer" an area and the only way to deal with the pissed off natives and nature, who have no desire to be conquered and their land stolen, is killing them. By this a culture of using weapons is solidly established as a standard, acceptable manner of how to deal with unpleasant situations. At a certain piont there are no natives or nature left to fend off, but feeling unsecure without a gun is so deeply rooted in society (i.e. a society where everybody could be your enemy with a weapon), that most people just simply cannot let go. However, Australia and New Zealand, with a comparable conquering history, found a sound way to deal with this issue a lot faster.

How long ago did people have to fend for themselves with guns in the US? Seriously? And the wars in Europe somehow made Europeans more conscious with guns whereas American treat guns as toys because war is what happens to other people? And that's why shooting people seems to be a viable solution to problems and nobody bats an eye?

Japan had less homeless people in their entire country in 2007 than my town had sleeping in a football field parking lot during Covid. They set up beds there in alternate parking spots because the indoor shelters weren't large enough to maintain social distancing. Please note it was beds,. not tents.

Those numbers that the government stats provide are not correct. Many people in Japan do not have a home but sleep in Internet cafes. So they are not counted as homeless even though they are.

    Yugan Talovich

Strict drug laws help, of course. But the main reason Japan has so few reported homeless people is that the social stigma of being homeless is practically unbearable. People live in cyber cafes.

Leaving Christianity does not mean that one loses faith in a God. Many people still believe in a God, creator or higher power of some kind. What they are leaving is organised religion. This is due to the behaviour of so called, 'Christians' and or the scandals of churches and church officials.

There is however a definite correlation between the years that Jane Austen's Emma appears on GCSE syllabus, and a decade later it appears in cradles

It's a lovely name-some people think its French origin and means "beautiful' (as in "Belle") but its medieval English and means loveable/adorable.

I named my baby Mabel in 2006 before it became cool again. But that's because on the show Mad About You they named their little girl Mabel because it stood for Mothers Always Bring Extra Love and I just adored that!!!!

According to the moderator team of Data is Beautiful, the subreddit receives between 400-500 submissions every week, and in one given month, they had 2,370 approvals, removals and spam posts. Meanwhile, the number of comments the subreddit receives is far too many to count, with an estimate of over 100k. And the rules of the group are frequently being assessed and improved by the moderators. “For example, we no longer allow YouTube videos as it was being abused by content creators looking for subs on their channel,” one moderator previously told Bored Panda. “We also occasionally temporarily prohibit specific subjects, like Tinder or dating posts, when a topic overwhelms the subreddit although dating posts are allowed again.”

Like the roasted chicken in the back of the store, the hot dog is a loss leader to get you in the door. The money they lose on that hotdog is vastly overshadowed by the profit they make on the $200 of crab legs for Sunday dinner and the new lawn furniture worth $2k you're now buying because your spouse decided to come in with you to get a hot dog.

Agreed. And to their credit they freely admit it. Optical and Pharmacy (also maybe hearing) are basically non-profit (not sure the right word) - again with the thought it will get you in the store and you will shop while your prescription if being filled.

Which information does the horizontal spread in female/male contain? One dot equals ...? 10 people?

    Marcellus II
    Community Member
2 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

I'd guess 1 dot= 1person as that fits the number (it's clearly far over 200 dots, so it cannot be 10). I don't think the horizontal spread means anything; boat-ticket-price would be the correct choice (you'd have different survival rates as they were on different decks). I suspected first all people were ordered by age, then added left-to-right horizontally in the correct height, then spread evenly over the chosen width (few 2-y-olds, spread sparsely; many 25y olds, spread densely), and only then separated male/female, then coloured survived/died... but that doesn't explain the left/right spread near the top. Maybe it IS ticket price, and that turns out to be quite irrelevant for survival?

Women and children were lowered into the lifeboats first (though that wasn't the case for every woman and child) so it isn't surprising to see that the data clearly shows that they had a higher survival rate.

Everyone dies with unresolved issues; death is a surprise to everyone. Also, why does no one ever see '70s punk ghosts? '20s flapper ghosts? '50s teeny bopper ghosts? Grunge lead singer ghosts? Nope. It's always "Victorian" which, to most people, means floor-length dresses and archaic-looking suits regardless of actual period.

It's funny, I don't know how to put this in a way that doesn't come off mean or whatever so I'm just gonna go for it: A lot of people with a Phd in science fields are heavily passionate about science and facts that can be determined, instead of things which cannot. This doesn't mean their right or wrong though. But that could influence the graph. Has nothing to do with any actual truth. You'd have to die to know for sure. Lowkey as a pagan, it's annoying when people say things like ghosts/fae/etc don't exist not being real is fact, when there's just simply no way humans will ever know (until death at least). Now on a personal level, I think there's too much anecdotal evidence to completely dismiss in. Sure some may be ill, or experiencing a group hallucination or something, but ALL of them over millions of years? Somehow I doubt it. Heavily.

And while the moderators are constantly working hard to ensure that the subreddit is functioning as perfectly as possible, due to the sheer amount of content, they can’t filter through every single post. “Most posts are visible immediately, however, we also utilize AutoMod to ‘filter’ out posts that likely violate a rule,” one moderator previously explained to Bored Panda. “Speaking of AutoMod, we heavily rely on it to filter, or make invisible, both posts and comments based on keywords, user karma, and URL links (to name a few) which then have to be manually approved before they are visible. We also utilize it to automatically remove posts that violate our rules (e.g., YouTube links or directly linking an image and not claiming [OC]) so we mods don't even have to see them.”

There is no gender wage gap. It’s just that men tend to go for the higher paying jobs like doctor, Director, or CEO, while women tend to go for the lower paying jobs like female doctor, female Director, or female CEO.

How do we distinguish the covid deaths in the line of duty as opposed to exposure by being a member of the populace overall exactly?

I do this stuff for a living... We do contact tracing to determine the vector of infection. Also, certain law enforcement officers have a legal presumption that if they get COVID, it's in the line of duty unless proven otherwise. Depends on the state laws.

As far as growth is concerned in this subreddit, it’s been pretty steady, according to the moderators. They shared that it started to slow down in 2017 and 2018, but since the last time we featured Data is Beautiful, the subreddit has gained over 3 million members, so it has definitely continued its growth over the years. The moderators also previously told Bored Panda that, “The way Reddit works, the subscriber count isn't all that important above a certain point, which is enough to get on r/all and/or the front page. That hits on a topic most of the more serious subreddits face: good content vs popular content.”

Does sleeping count as 'alone'? The numbers don't add up to 24x60 = 1440min/day; or if subtracting 8h sleep (optimistic!) nowhere near 960min. Older people sleep less so the totals should go up, here that's well below 800min for the oldest so doesn't really fit.

Yeah the graph is kind of misleading because for most of your life you aren't spending most of your time alone. The combined value of the coworkers and partner or children would typically exceed time spent alone but the graph makes it seem like most of your time is spent alone. Plus, does time with children sometimes include time with partner? I don't think it's the best representation

The quarantines did prove quite effectively that even the highly introverted need people. However I'd like to point out that the primary defining factor of introverts is that they also need time alone - extroverts recharge energy by being with people and introverts recharge by being alone. Various obligations usually have us alone less than we prefer, so I can understand the general "alone == good" mentality. But you're right, being alone too much is also bad. Balance in all things, I suppose, for both types of people, even if the ideal % differs slightly.

This graph seems to be assuming quality of health care is the only factor on life expectancy. Pollution, climate, wars, etc. And of course lifestyle. USA health care could be free and twice as good and still have people dying from to much twinkies, chicken nuggets and alcohol.

    Parmeisan

I mean, you're not wrong, but there are enough data points here to get an idea of the general pattern when you ignore outliers. I expect you agree that the USA is a clear outlier. The question is, do you think the things you point out here are enough to fully explain why it is such an outlier? Keeping in mind that there are other countries very similar to USA in such things, e.g. Canada. We're the same in pretty much every important way except gun control and health care. So which are you dying from? The guns or the health care?

Important to see but I'd rather see the worldwide average for median used, e.g. 88% bottom = 12% top and then coloured to show countries above and below this line. It'd be a good way to look at the concentration of countries that are more or less than this (obscene) wealth metric.

I have an MLIS in archiving and digital archiving (digital asset management) with a bachelors, associates, and professional certification in digital archives; 6 semesters of mostly unpaid internships with special collections/archives in museums and library councils. Graduated in 2019 and was applying for jobs the last six months of my degree until I finally got a job in December of 2021. Applied for at least 300 jobs in academia, heritage institutions (museums), national/state archives, and the corporate sector (digital asset management) all over the US. I maybe had 15 interviews, 5 second interviews (one with the library of Congress) and one job offer. I still work at that job, which is corporate sector digital asset management. It doesn't matter how specific of a career field you have. EVERYONE is applying for hundreds of jobs with a very little success rate (interview).

Easier said than done. Relocating involves a lot of money and time. It's not as though one can simply pile one's worldly goods into a couple suitcases and hop on a bus. Also, if you pull up your stakes you are leaving behind a lot of friends, and possibly family.

The absolute numbers are very misleading. If you take this per capita, the US have 14,5 t, while China comes to 7,6 t - about half. The European Union is around 6,1 t, India is below 2. Russia is around 12 due to their deprecated infrastructure.

Yes because in India it's very common to have a maid do the laundry. Many clothes are washed by hand due to nature of fabric or style of clothes or simply person preference / lack of affordability. some believe that clothes will be spoilt if washed in the machine.

We get 80% of our groceries, rice & pulses, once in a year, which never needs refrigeration. Meat is cooked only once in a week, Sunday and we only get fresh meat. We get fresh milk twice a day, vegetables as and when required and never need a refrigerator for our daily needs. Yet 39% just own to keep the leftovers, which we consider unhealthy.

Big egg producers were hit with the bird flu scare. Culled their entire flocks. Once the big egg producers get their new chickens old enough to lay again (7-9 months) the price should go down.

This graph points to the avian flu as the reasoning for the increased prices, but this is not the whole story. The Federal Trade Commission has been called to investigate Cal Maine Foods, the largest egg producer, on accusations of price gouging, as Cal Maine has experienced a ten-fold increase in profits.

On top of that, where I live they passed a law that all eggs sold have to be cage free and locally sourced…then 90% of the laying population was killed due to avian flu. They rolled back the locally sourced regulation, but eggs hit 6, 7 dollars a dozen. Except Costco! You can still get 2doz for 6 bucks.

Only takes one nuke.... So sad the all this money is not used for a greater good. Iran & Afganistan have cost over 2 trillion dollars. That's 1,000,000,000,000. That's ~ 3000 USD for ever American. Enough to have completely phased out fossil fuels and transition to renewables. Imagen the US economy if instead of blowing that money on a war it had gone into energy independence.

Friends is one of the worst shows of all time. If you like it, that's great, but it is truly terrible in my eyes. I will die on this hill. It's Always Sunny was created in direct opposition to Friends. However, I do like how the Friends cast banded together to demand equal pay for each cast member per episode. That was solid.

Imdb scores are reliable only when the episodes of any show don't show the following: black or any other people of color in a big role, LGBT+ characters or actors, strong female characters. Any one of these and you have a troll bot legion giving 1/10 and dragging down the average.

The current trend seems to be over representing black people to show how woke your company is. Recently I was walking down aisles at Target and walked past about 8 different in store advertising posters and every single one of them had black people on it. My area is a mix of people but it's predominantly white as compared to say some place like parts of Oakland CA. Nothing wrong with black models but the reason behind the choices was pretty transparent. EDIT to clarify those Target posters had only black people. No white people at all. Weird for a city whose demographics are - "White: 82.13% Asian: 5.94% Two or more races: 5.78% Other race: 3.48% Black or African American: 1.6% Native American: 0.91% Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander: 0.15%"

VERY interesting graph - however, the creator may have been influenced by his/her own biases when viewing the commercials. Darker skinned Hispanic may have counted as black. Lighter skinned black may have been counted Hispanic. And what about mixed-race?

Same! Currently, we have a new voting law applied in germany, that will cause small parties to have higher difficulties in entering parliaments - we see the two-party system failing BECAUSE it's two parties only, at least that contributes to the failing ... we have seen the green party rise from being a minority of constant 5...10 % to almost the state of a "Volkspartei" (="peoples' party" - parties representing large groups of people), and every party having ecological programs that vastly exceed what the green party dared to ask in the eighties. That is a given now, that, in germany, at least partially is a result of small parties being voted in relatively easy so far. I think any system can benefit from relatively small parties having a say by the need to form allies to gain majority in order to form a government.

Greatest staged moment in Grammy history. It worked too. Everybody suddenly remembered who Will Smith was. Famous people get forgotten. Infamous people are immortalized.

Are you serious? This happened at the Oscar gala, which has nothing to do with Grammy. It also ended up Will Smith being kicked out of the actor's guild, and he'll become a liability to any studio who wants to make a profit starring him in a movie they produce. He might get immortalized, but for the worst reason possible.

I think this chart just shows the relationship between one full tank of gas. I am unsure how you could make a chart to show those who fill up more often. The different variables would make it impossible to show in a simple graph like this

Seen the in comparison with the US high prices in central EU (eg Bene without lux and Germany), the wages seem to be quite high. Chart omits the actual figure for the average month net salary to give some real insight. E95 was 1,71€ yesterday, at a mid-priced gas-station on the coast of NL. According to our CBS an average net salary is 2.800€

It's a population problem in that there aren't enough factory workers, and there's concern there won't be enough tax payers to support the elderly population. However, it is causing Japan to be a lot more open to foreign workers, and during the last 20 years, there's been a LOT of talk from young people about treating foreign workers better. It's good to see, because immigrants can really enrich a country with new ideas and new perspectives and new ways of doing things.

yes, let's judge things that happened over a century ago by modern ideals. Many of the places on this list were under British occupation at one time or another, some items were gathered by the Nazis and then saved during the war. Those 160k artifacts from Iraq - how many of those would have survived ISIS, who made it their mission to destroy anything not of historical value to THEM? You also make the assumption that the British Museum refuses to return things back to their countries. A number of them leave them with the British Museum because it is better equipped to house them in proper conditions...

This is not a function of the quality of the artists, but of the fact that different age groups listen to music on different media. I'm GenX; I make playlists on my iPhone. My Millennial daughter uses Spotify (but listens to none of these artists).

So what? These are half a dozen people, responsible for an infinitesimally small fraction of U.S. emissions. People driving less, working from home, taking public transport, etc. could have a much greater impact by orders of magnitude.

I am not sure I understand your question but if you are wondering about the high costs of the 2022 football (or soccer) World cup: if you build enough stadiums for such an event in a desert state without history in that sport but with the need for A/C on the field you burn through a lot of money. Not speaking of the amounts that landed in FIFA functionaries' pockets to get the tournament there in the first place

There is at least 1 mistake : Pizza hut and little Caesar's, they either mixed up the numbers or the boxes there

In the New England states, there are WAY more Dunkin' Donuts than McDonald's, Starbucks, and Subway.

Wow, I thought it was just illegal everywhere. Maybe this is a map of where it needed to be made illegal because it was happening a lot?

I think it's not proven to be a problem which requires a legal solution in most places.

I guess now I understand a bit more why people in the US are so anti first cousin marriage. It is fully legal where I live and I am the product of first cousin marriage so I find it strange people are so against it.

Children of first-cousin marriages have an increased risk of autosomal recessive genetic disorders, and this risk is higher in populations that are already highly ethnically similar. The real danger comes if you then go on to marry another cousin, then your offspring do the same, and so on. This also famously occurred in the royal houses of Europe (Habsburgs) hence the number of birth defects. It's literally in-breeding.

Anyone else asking who is Jami Gertz? Well, she was Star in the Lost Boys and had lots of other minor roles. However, she did marry and divorce a billionaire so that helps...

Don't forget the classic Seinfeld episode where Jami Gertz is the woman insisting to Elaine that she "doesn't have a square to spare" in the restroom 🙂

I love Jamie Gertz. She was in Twister, and a host of other movies.

If you click on the name under the photo you'll get to see the atmospheric response in action. Not sure why Bored Panda chose to represent an animation in 2D.
