If there's a problem, there's a solution. Of course, if the issue is very specific, a simple screwdriver probably won't do the trick. Luckily, human ingenuity has more to offer. A lot more. And you can see it all on the subreddit r/SpecializedTools.

It's an interesting corner of the internet, encouraging people to post photos of niche tools, created to make our lives better in situations where nothing else fits quite as well. A real delight to satisfy our curiosity.

I am intrigued... I do sit cross legged in my chair a lot, but I also would like back support still... and not sure about that multi-level... would love to test one of these in a store, because I'm quite interested but don't want to risk an expensive bad purchase XD

I used to switch between crossed legs and dangling, until my husband made me a footstool (the ones that the office provided just weren't high enough for me).

Most family garages probably have an assortment of tools and materials that could all be used to make, for example, a basic table for the backyard or even something more complex. The team at Dienamics, a company that specializes in industrial design, toolmaking, and manufacturing, says that tools are the backbone of modern industry and trade. They are essential in almost any construction project. However, we don't often stop to think about the process of making the tools themselves.

Many argue that in prehistoric times, one of the most important eras in our evolution was the utilization of basic tools. The earliest known human-made stone tools date back around 2.6 million years. Crafted and used by homo habilis (sometimes known as "handy man"), these implements marked the first in a series of major toolmaking advances among early human hunter-gatherer societies, lasting from the early Stone Age all the way up until the first modern humans, homo sapiens, made the transition to permanent agricultural settlements around 10,000 years ago. Tools allowed our ancient ancestors to have much more of an effect on the world around them, helping them to survive in more comfort, and achieve more with less.

As we evolved as a species, so did our tools and our ability to use them. These two elements were essential to the development of infrastructure, which spurred the establishment of trades like carpentry and blacksmithing which relied on an individual mastering the use of a certain tool or trade. While hand tools were once forged out of the natural environment, these trades fine-tuned the creation of their tools using iron, wood and other metals which were heated and remolded.

These days, the process of creating tools is a lot more specific which, according to Dienamics, means there is a uniformity in material, size, and weight of hand tools which wasn't possible before. Now, a hand tool is designed on a computer, taking into account specific measurements and densities which make it both efficient and easy to use.

There was a tree a couple miles from my house - a giant heritage Live Oak - that was going to be cut down to make room for some road "improvements", and the people in the neighborhood raised like $50,000 to have it moved. It was at least as big as the one in the photo.

Well, that tree will live, maybe, another 4 years, depending on how much energy it had stored. but, either way, it is history. To successfully [?] transplant a tree that is growing in the ground, you MUST dig up the entire tap root. The tap root, as a rule of thumb, is, generally, longer than the tree is tall. You must also dig up twice the circumference of the branches. This tree has no chance. But it makes people feel good to think that they are saving a hundred/400 year old tree so that they can go ahead and build a building that will be torn down in about fifty years.

I hate to rain on everyone's feel good parade here, but if you know about trees you know that their root systems mirror their branch system. That tree on the trailer looks like it has had a significant segment of the major root system removed, including the crucial central trunk. I would have to say that its chances for survival are iffy.

A mass amount of water sloshing to one side of a truck will cause it to tip over but the balls keep a great big amount of water from hitting the side of the tank.

I was kayaking on a river, when a fire started on the bluff above me. A few minutes later a firefighting helicopter appeared, and what it did was hover above the river, stick a long broad hose into the river and hoover up water, and spray it on the fire. It could have used any water source larger than a puddle, that thing could have drained a horse trough and used it to fight a small wildfire.

"As it turns out, to take off the Barnacle, all you need to do is run your vehicle’s windshield defroster for 15 minutes, and then use a credit card or similar thin piece of plastic to release the suction cup around the edge. Presto! You’re free from fees....Because it has a GPS tracker meant to set off a loud alarm whenever it, or the car it’s attached to, moves, the Barnacle also has a built-in SIM card. One reddit user figured out the SIM card had unlimited data, and hacked it so they could tether their own personal cell phone to its network, giving them unlimited free phone data for several months" Source: https://driving.ca/auto-news/news/students-defeat-new-barnacle-parking-boot-skip-fines-and-get-free-internet

My friend got a boot off of his car by deflating the tire. He then threw the boot in a lake. He got stopped once they were confused when running his plates. He jus played dumb & they probably assumed it was a computer error. This was over 15 years ago so technology has changed a lot since then. For those who want to say he could get in trouble- He passed away almost 10 years ago so it makes me laugh as it really didn’t matter what he did or didn’t do. It’s all irrelevant once we are gone

Short version - Because you are no longer in gravity, the force of even a normal, small screwdriver could cause you to move while bigger ones can send you flying. Long version All forces between two objects exist in equal magnitude and opposite direction. As the screwdriver spins the screw one direction, an equal and opposite amount force is transferred into the screwdriver and the person holding it. Newtons other laws regarding inertia and momentum means this doesn''t matter much when you are on the ground. A 100kg astronaut has 980 N of force from gravity that has to be overcome to change your movement. In space, this force is reduced to 1x10^(-6) so there's only .00098 N of force to counter. A normal screwdriver is ~20N that can send you spinning into space. These special tools have parts that transfer the forces in different directions so they negate each other and keep you mostly still.

I had a nitrogen freezer at work for one of our investigational studies for a melanoma drug - company had to come out every 2 weeks to refill the liquid nitrogen, and it was always a fun time with all the steam/fog flowing everywhere. The neat part was everything was kept insanely cold but the freezer wasn't plugged in! And we gauged the depth of the liquid nitrogen by sticking a yardstick into it and seeing where the freeze line was. It was refreshing how "low-tech" the whole thing was.

A stenographer is a person trained to type or write in shorthand methods, enabling them to write as quickly as people speak. The machine allows a trained person to type 300 words per minute while the average speaking speed is ~150 words per minutes. They have to learn how to write and type like this, like almost a new language. The machine works by typing syllables rather than single letters and you can combine multiple keys at once to create words. With the modern machines, a computer will be able to translate the cryptic list of symbols into real text adding spaces, punctuations, etc. In the past, it was a mandatory training for secretaries. My grandmother learned to do it and still uses it in her daily life without really noticing she's writing gibberish to us :)

I used shorthand to write notes to myself during a fairly famous court case way back when. I still have the notebook but cannot read one single thing.

Serious question here: why can't you just record what's been said in the court?

    Jess Lew
    Community Member
4 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

You can, and some courts do, but a transcriptionist is only going to transcribe as good as the recording is. A stenographer can ask someone to repeat what they said, ask people to speak up, slow down. And it's less tedious than transcribing audio on a qwerty, a much more efficient process overall.

    This is a student writer and I think they're just playing around. A E S is when you add on an S to a word. H E D - Head A U L T - alt? T AO EU PL - time P P - ? T L - ? B - be R L - ? R B G S - comma , R L - ? K HR O E S - close. They might just know a different theory than me. YouTube has an awesome video with an explanation of what's going on here. Way easier than writing y'all a book.

My mom is a court reporter. She said AULT = all the, TAOEUPL = time, TL = it will, B = be, RL / RBGS / RL = really, really, KLOES = close. She said PP and PRAEF are probably brief forms unique to that reporter.

Yes. I used to drive a golf ball picker in high school. Broke a lot. One time they were putting in new dirt and the picker couldn’t drive over. So the pro told me to go hit the balls off the dirt to more solid ground. While the range was open and people were hitting! I told him no and he said “no one is going to hit you”. Well then htf did the balls get there? I quit he was a prick

I don't know of any thermal insulation material that only work from "one end", as in only works against cold or only against hot. Thermal insulation works by slowing down the transfer of heat through the material regardless of which side is hot or cold. So technically speaking they work in the same way as oven mitts though these ones are most likely manufactured to a different specification.

other than it looks cool if done properly, and hilarious when it goes wrong, what is the purpose of opening a bottle in this manner?

Chiefly? Sabering is about looking like a badass. It exploits a structural stress point in the bottle to create a clean break without the risk of glass shards flying back into the wine. Ironically enough, you're meant to do it using the blunt side of the knife blade as a bludgeon, rather than actually cutting through the glass.

Orrr... and hear me out... we could maybe just use a cork screw? I dunno but something about using a straw to suck the wine off the floor after the bottle breaks just doesn’t appeal to me.

Still not very safe, you'll cut the bottle which can cut at the wrong angle and you end up with 28 stitches. Don't ask how I know.

It's just to look cool with a knife and bottle. If one is VERY daring, you can actually do it with a champagne flute instead of a knife.

Nobody makes crowns out of porcenlain anymore (ceramics isn't the same) and they aren't shaped with something like that either. This is for creating space between two teeth. Most dentists don't have a handle and just use the thin blade like you would do with dental floss. But even more common are just specialized tools for the drill that look like a much smaller version of this.

There are some safes that the moment you try to use this or any item an acid is released inside the "dial" that immediately makes the entire "dial" a solid piece of metal and you have to remove the entire door. Good luck with that.

Having a stockman restrain them by direct holding while they're injected. More chance of human error and greater freedom of movement for the lamb will increase the risk of bruising, needle breakage, or having the skin pulled away from the underlying muscle.

With lambs there's not very much wool at all to have to go through. My friends own a huge sheep farm. I help at lambing looking after the little ones in the nursery who are having problems. I also help at vaccination time. I've never had a problem holding onto any lamb to get their shot. Dont know about this deal but it kind of looks like a conveyor belt. Not humanely. Just faster.

That's not humane at all. It's horrific. It's easy to jab them in the rump and then put a blob of colour on so you know that one is done, without removing them from the herd, without traumatizing them with some god awful metallic contraption that is clearly not pleasant. Sickening.

And how huge the needle must be to go through all of the wool to get to the muscle in the rump? I think this is to avoid the needle breakage mostly , which could be very painful . I agree that it doesn’t look great but they forget as soon as they are off and back to grazing

This one is used by constructors to make holes for air vents in the kitchens, for the air conditioning systems (external module), central heating system, etc.
