I’ve been recently promoted to co-president of a club called Help Meow-t due to my work with feral cats. Near our college there is a feral cat colony that I visit everyday, I feed them and socialize them so that hopefully they will be adopted. Now, feral cats are different from strays. The main difference is the amount of human interaction that they have had, strays are cats who have previously had homes and are human friendly. Feral cats are domestic cats that have never had homes, they are essentially wild. For almost three months now I have visited the cats daily, we started out with twenty cats but at this point we have eighteen due to death. I discuss into further detail what happened to our two cats who died in other posts. Anyway, the first step was to do a TNR (Trap, Neuter, Release) Program. We set out live traps and caught most of our cats, then we brought them to a local vet to be fixed, wormed, and receive their shots. Soon we will be doing this a second time in order to catch the cats who were not caught the first time. The second step is getting the cats used to your presence and the presence of others. Going down daily to feed them and sit with them was good but, I started to bring friends so that the cats got to know other people as well. Other steps kind of melt together because some cats need more work than others and it happens at different times. While visiting the cats my friends and I slowly put the food closer and closer to us, this led to being able to reach out and pet some of the cats. Yes, we have been scratched and bitten, but in the end we managed to get some cats to enjoy being touched. Most of the cats, at this point, are still in this process. A kitten named Bob (his brother’s name is Marley), has made the most progress, we can now pet him and a select few can hold him. I can happily say that he is ready for adoption now. Inky, a large black cat, is still at the petting stage. He is around four years of age and might take longer than the younger cats. At best, he would be a good outdoor kitty, but for now I think he is very comfortable where he is. All of what I initially learned about socializing was from a website I found, I’ll include the link here: http://www.theluckyfew.org/site/feral_cats.html
For more information please comment! I’ll answer what I can.
