Photographer Documents The Bizarre Peculiarities Of Russia Using His iPhone (40 Pics)
Russian photographer, journalist, and social worker Dmitry Markov is known for his gritty images in which he depicts the macabre peculiarities of Russian life, mostly of those that are less well-off. The photographer explains that the reason why he's drawn to the "ugly side of life" is because he considers himself to be a part of it. Half of the people he photographs he knows personally, and it shows since his photos always have an element of intimacy.
Born in Pushkin and currently residing in Pskov, the author has worked as a social worker focusing on youth problems and has been volunteering at an orphanage for 7 years, where he began to amass his body of work. But unfortunately, his camera got stolen there, and he decided to switch to something more comfortable, so he started using an iPhone. He says he doesn't care about the quality, and if he could, he'd sketch everything by hand.

Absolutely fabulous pictures. Captures daily life there. Best I've seen
As strange as it may sound to some, the author likes it in his hometown of Pskov. He believes that for creative areas especially, a person can learn everything online, and there's no need to get bunched up in an expensive megacity. But he travels all over Russia as well, with some of his photos being from Saint Petersburg, Moscow, Krasnoyarsk, various villages, and other places in the country. Regardless of the place, they all have Markov's signature style to them. His photos always tell a narrative or two about the photo itself and what's "outside" the photo: the everyday reality of people living in Russia. Markov has a great eye for composition, and his photos are always structurally sound, contrasting against the chaos that pertains to life seen in the pictures.

It's incredible in this day and age, when we're inundated, saturated with visual imagery, for a simple still photograph to retain so much power. The photographer has to be very special. This photographer is maybe one of the best there has ever been. Looking through these, and through the previous post with his work, makes me feel the same as when I used to look through my parents' old book of Pulitzer prize winning photographs. He's doing something nobody else has been able to do so effectively for a long time - make me interested in looking at photos! His work is exciting, and hilarious, and full of contradictions. Dynamic. Actually thought-provoking. Revealing of the inner spirit of its subjects, even when they're monotone square box buildings. Who knew photographs could still do that? Thank you for all of this beautiful work!

What's so "peculiar" or quintessentially Russian about a couple of girls?
Even though the content of the imagery is self-evident, one struggles to find the exact words to describe what's being seen in the picture. They have a little bit of candidness and intimacy, and a little bit of harsh honesty of realism, while at the same time, they're bizarre, uncanny, and magical. It's as paradoxical as the way of Russian life that he's so immersed in capturing. It's reminiscent of a painting genre known as magical realism, the only difference being the medium. This distinct style may one day be called "photographic magical realism."

I like the fact that even though the drawing is rather naive, the ship is recognisably a Skoryy-class Soviet destroyer and the aeroplanes are Il-10s. This means our guy would have been in the navy in the 1950s.

I've seen boxes at the entrances of church courtyards with skirts and head scarfs. During lunch break, people pop into church for a quick prayer but they're wearing office clothes. That's what the box is for.

Correct! In the Orthodox church, women are required to wear skirts/dresses, not trousers. They've probably found a loophole :) The same skirts I'd also assume is because they had a whole bunch of material and made multiple skirts for their friends

Same here (Bulgaria)... the modern equipment is somewhat worse, though, its colors are bright and it stands old a little too much, while the old stuff's muted colors allowed it to blend in with the background.

I wonder if Apple gives money if the title specificially mentions the pictures were taken by 'iPhone' and not another phone or a camera. I get it, they aren't made with a professional camera, but if so, maybe just telling 'phone' would suffice? Or not mention this detail at all. We're here only for the photos anyway.

Very interesting. These pics remind me so much of East Germany before the wall came down. Also... why was it so important to mention the iPhone in the title?

I'm not sure 'peculiarities' is the correct word for most of this pictures... I think it shows the rawness and reality of daily life in (a particular part of) Russia. Definitely a glimpse into a world removed from my own...

Everything looks so bleak. That's not a criticism of the photography or the people. It's just evokes a strong emotion that I'm not very comfortable with.
