As someone who worked in a Maccas about a million years ago, it's really irritating, especially when you're really busy. You have to use up all the current batch, and then wipe everything to get the salt off. It's like telling your server you can't eat gluten, (which means the kitchen has to make sure everything is carefully cleaned to ensure there's no cross contamination) and then having cake for dessert. It's a bit of a s****y thing to do to someone who doesn't get paid very much.

As someone who used to work in MCD I agree with Ripley and also would like to add (just to be sure) that the serving bin gets, of course, cleaned every so often no matter if someone wants fries without salt but imagine if you've just done that, made a single batch of salted ones and have to do it all over again for somebody who doesn't want unsalted fries just really really fresh ones.

Thank you for the responses! I genuinely did not know how much of a pain that ends up being. I have never done this, but I’ve known people who did, and I thought it was no big deal. I can now understand how much of a pain that would be.

"No salt" is VERY hard to do cause you cant let a single fry touch the fry holder because there are people with SEVERE salt allergies and we dont know for sure if you're one of them, or if you just want fresh fries. To make no-salt fries we start a crush basket, cook it, pull it out, then some overworked 16 year old has to risk hot oil burns on her hand by shaking a dripping metal basket over a small cardboard container. It's evil because 9-10 times you ask nicely for fresh fries, they'll be more than happy to give them to you. No salt fries, when you're not allergic to salt is a useless, dangerous(for staff) thing to order.

When someone asks for fries without salt, the serving bin and server scoop are cleaned before the fries are turned out to cool.

So worked at McD's. Just ask for fresh fries and light salt. With no salt, we just made a new batch and scooped the fries out of the deep fryer bin though. Sometimes just dumped the fries and scooped just the top layer. We didn't wipe everything down. Could have been my branch cutting corners though. I've never heard of a "salt" allergy since we need salt to survive...

As someone who currently works at MickeyDs it is alot easier if you just ask for the fries to be cook to order. We really dont mind at all

I work at McDonald's. All you have to do is ask for cook to order. That means fresh.

You don't know what financial situation anyone is in. that .33 cents saved every day for breakfast can add up to quite a bit.

if you eat one Everyday it's .33 X365... so 120$... of course if you just keep the money instead of buying fastfood Everyday you could save a lot more… but just add the .33$ you could save each day you can save in a long run

I don't see any issue here. The restaurant literally charges 1/3 of a dollar for nothing. Plus, there's no extra work for the employees so no bother to anyone

I have a dunkin that charges me for a whole sandwich when i just order sausage and another that just charges me for what I am getting. It's at least .50, which is $2.50 per week (if I were to get it 5 days a week)

Sales volume, no matter how popular an item is, you need to be able to sell X amount to bring in Y profits to justify having that item in stock and on the menu. Otherwise you're burning valuable menu real estate for an item that's underperforming on profits. The flip side is also, if an item is too popular, but the profit value is too low, you want to axe that too. You've only got so much storage & working space, and can't afford to dedicate excessive space to sell that one item if it devalues your bottomline.
