Terminally Sick Dog Insists On Taking A Walk At 1:30, Owner Knows Exactly Where To Take Him
It’s been tough going lately for Kiefer. After a double eye enucleation (removal of the eyeballs) a couple years back, the terminally ill dog’s condition was steadily decreasing. And for the last couple weeks, the poor fella was barely moving at all. So when one night at 1:30 AM he jumped up and insisted on going for a walk, his owner knew exactly what needed to happen next.
The best friends went to a pizza joint for a slice to share, while the owner photographed Kiefer enjoying every bit of their field trip.
When the owner posted his story on Imgur, the response was overwhelming. But not without the wave of criticism for “torturing” the animal by keeping him alive in this condition: “To those saying ‘I’ve kept him alive for my own selfishness’ – you know what, I’m not going to dignify such a dumb comment with a response. I spent a considerable amount of money for his operation instead of having him put down. If he was in pain after the operation, I would have made the right call. But he wasn’t, he lived another 2 happy amazing years.”

He walked Kiefer to the local pizza joint and shared a slice with him!

To the critics saying it's torture to keep him alive... Would they do the same if one of their family/kids/... had their eyes removed? Or if they had any other handicap? As long as the pet isn't in pain or suffering, why would he have to be put down? Saddens me to see how easily some would just give their pet up because it has a disease/handicap that can be lived with.
Any pet, but dogs, for me anyway, can rapidly become closer than actual family. All they ever want is to be loved.....well, and fed an endless stream of treats! I lose it every time one passes, so I know exactly how sad you feel. As I am sure you know, the best therapy for anyone is to rescue another soul when you are able. love and hugs,,,craig

The smile on that pup's face says he's quite happy to be alive, eyes or no eyes. I'm a sucker for these and my son's name is the same as the dog, so it hit harder for some weird reason. What a great family those two guys make!
Animals have amazing instincts and they are capable to live their lives to fullest even without eyesight!
You are right, ignoring those who don't understand is the best. Kiefer had a great live and was showered with love and great care from his human. You (his human) did well. God bless.
good on you you did the right thing, my dog was in kidney faliure but no pain for 6 months even the vet told me not to put him down as they let us know when they are ready, and if you dont belive lme you have never been through it dont be to hasty
This owner cares for his dog, all those people saying he was being selfish for not putting this dog down are idiots. As much as this guy loved his dog, he would have put him down if it was the right thing to do but he, and I (after reading this post), know this dog was perfectly fine to continue living for a few more years.
It's not love when you keep an animal alive on its expense just because you are to selfish to let it go without pain.
Critics of this man have no heart. He has something called love and compassion.
Kiefer's Loving Dad: Nowadays, people think they have a right to criticize, and that to avoid their criticism, you should give them reasons not to. That is b******t. People who criticize need to ensure they have understood everything. I think you are a wonderful human being. I also know that dogs miss losing their sniffing power more, so personally, I am sure he went in peace and with a happy heart. May you and your next pet have wonderful times. RIP Kiefer.
When we get a dog we take over the responsibility for it. How far we let them take a journey into old age and failing health is our decision and we need to make that decision based on the individual dog and its needs. My dog could probably deal with old age blindness but I'm pretty sure that she would be incredibly unhappy if she became seriously unclean due to paralysis. We cannot really judge that case from afar, but two more happy years seem to be a decent result.
You did what you did, and you did very well because every life matters and is worth prolonging (without suffering of course...) Bless you for your kind heart!
