If you've noticed your bar of Toblerone looking rather small and a far cry from how you remember it in your childhood, rest assured, you’re not the only one. In fact, consumers around the world are increasingly paying more for a growing range of products in ways that don’t show up on receipts.

Think of shrunk portions, thinner rolls, lighter bags, smaller cans — in this way, companies try to offset rising labor and materials costs without scaring us all off. But are they really succeeding? Also known as shrinkflation, the phenomenon has surely been noticed and well documented by people don’t find it fair to pay the same for a lesser net weight.

One such online destination, a subreddit called “Shrinkflation,” is dedicated to sharing some of the most deliberate and annoying examples of paying more for less spotted in practice. Below we wrapped up a collection of posts from there.

Hair conditioner is ninety percent alcohol, so the more you use the drier your hair gets so then you think need more and use more and your hair gets drier and on and on. Also, most moisturizers are made with petroleum products that dry out your skin in the long run.

Copyright wouldn't matter. Various foods, like cheese and chocolate, can't have those words as part of the name unless they meet a certain percentage of it in the product. Not enough cocoa in your chocolate? Can't have chocolate in the name. Chocolaty orange would be allowed though.

Shrinkflation is a form of retail camouflage in which consumers pay more for a growing range of products without actually realizing it. By shrinking usual product sizes and net weight, companies and businesses aim to cover rising labor and material costs without increasing the prices.

According to Edgar Dworsky, a consumer advocate and lawyer who has authored a number of consumer protection laws, including the regulations under which the Massachusetts Lemon Law operates, consumers check the price every time they buy, but they don’t check the net weight. Dworsky has been tracking shrinkflation for more than 30 years, and he shares the results on his website Consumer World.

Hate to be the "actually" guy, but it's nitrogen inside. Air would turn them quickly while nitrogen helps them last longer without spoilage.

    David Henry
    Community Member
3 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

For chips, this is actually a bit necessary. That's not air in there; it's nitrogen, I believe. It helps keep it fresh and keep its crisp through store shelf time. I mean, ever notice how more or less your bag of chips has always been crispy upon opening but after opening it slowly grows stale? You haven't always been selecting chips within days of going stale; you opened it and took the nitrogen away. They need a pretty good amount of nitrogen gas to keep it in "stasis" as it were.

I'm so sick of people thinking they are getting screwed on chips. There has always been a large amount of hydrogen in the bags to help keep them fresh and also act as cushion for shipping. If the chips were filled to the top there wouldn't be a whole chip left. Just look at the weight. It doesn't matter how much air in the bag. If it's 10 oz on the pack you are okay ng for 10 oz smh

You can't always get the last amount of oil out of the can before the pressure has gone. Leaving oil in the can that's thrown away. My experience has told me that the smaller cans (100ml) are the worse for this. I went through a phase of opening up the "empty" cans to see how much was left. Maybe I should have formalized the results and publicized them for widespread comparison. https://www.facebook.com/739827619/videos/3134983986753041/

Pringles are not actual potato chips (US) or crisps (UK), they are compressed extruded instant mashed potato, like the fake mashed potatoes that come in a box, turned into a snack-shaped atrocity. Do not eat them. Eat actual potatoes instead! Real chips/crisps for a treat, and whole spuds as a healthy carbohydrate side dish. Even better -- don't peel your potatoes, eat them skin-on. As with most vegetables in the Solanum family, most of the vitamins in potatoes are located right under the skin, which is why you should never peel potatoes, eggplants or tomatoes. Just scrub your potatoes really well under cold water, cook them however you like them, and enjoy!

Everyone should look up how inflation rates are actually calculated, and more importantly, what they leave out. It's literally only a metric for investment. It does NOT actually reflect the real value of your money. If the government reports a % for inflation - at least double it.

Yes, there's many inflation measures; CPI, PCE, WPI, etc. They are used for different purposes.

No, this inflation, at least in America, is caused by faulty monetary policy in which Yellen kept interest rates at near 0% for fears of deflation and recession during the pandemic; now we're seeing the results of this inflated money supply raising demand above NGDP, causing inflation.

That is actually fraud and worse yet they tampered with the scales which, depending on the jurisdiction, is a federal level crime. Report with documentation to the agency in charge of weights and measures. The local popo wouldn't give a damn.

No, that's fraud. The supermarket needs to correct their scale and you should take this to a consumer protection agency such as the Better Business Bureau or FTC

Considering the frequency with which supermarket scales are checked and the fact that this crummy kitchen scale isn't even able to be calibrated it is likely at fault here.

They probably set their scales off on purpose . So even if you're looking at it as they are weighing it, it's fraudulent.

Yeah.. that can't happen.. lol.. unless maybe a different country, but in Massachusetts, all scales are checked regularly, it's illegal for ANY market.. even BY ACCIDENT to do that. They even have to check the different tares, for different containers and wrappings. Either this is BS for views, or theft .. as Something stated.. or in a place that doesn't have strict laws.

No. They did not buy this at the docks. They bought it at a grocery store. When it was weighed it had already been cleaned and and cut it and ready to be cooked and then eaten. You are incorrect, Sherlock.

Dworsky also argues that when small bags of candy have been downsized, you are not likely to eat two bags instead. "But for orange juice, cereal, paper towels, toilet paper, peanut butter, whatever — consumers just have to buy it more often."

Although products don’t shrink by half and the changes are usually barely noticeable, these little differences add up to your pocketbook. If you're getting 10% to 12% less of a product, that's equivalent to a 10% price increase, and if you’re a regular consumer of that product, you will start feeling the difference pretty soon.

I occasionally make my own soy yogurt from powdered soy milk from our local bulk foods store(for some reason, soy yogurt is not something you can buy in Canada). It is absolutely dirt cheap - because it turns out powdered soy milk costs 90% less than powdered dairy milk, somehow. Our government fixes the prices of dairy products, and it's really screwing over the consumer right now.

I could see why you'd think that, and it could very well be the case with some brands. In this case however I have not seen any diminished volume. A lot of people add fresh fruit, nuts or granola to their yogurt and it is frustrating when half of your toppings hit the floor due to insufficient room for mixing. Before Danon acquired the rights, it was a product of StoneyField Farms and even then (early 2000's) I believe there was extra room for toppings. I can thoroughly appreciate your skepticism however, as "shrinkflation" continues to flagrantly violate consumer's trust.

On the other hand, we can try to see the positive side of shrinkflation and argue that we may indeed be saving some calories. In the context of the obesity pandemic, this may be a small but important step. When six-packs of bagels go from 24 oz to 22 to 20 oz, the chances are you will still be buying the same number of packages but end up eating a lesser amount of food.

If it's steel, it absolutely could be the same material. Steel can be made surprisingly thin before it begins to compromise from a strength standpoint. The problem here is that it doesn't weigh enough to hold the intended contents without falling over, not that it's deforming due to the weight.

I don't have a caliper built into my eyes, so maybe it's thinner maybe not. I do know that companies will use 201 stainless in place of 304 stainless to save money. Chromium and Nickel both play roles in the density, chemical resistance, hardness and look. Chromium weighs 7.4 grams per cubic centimeter. Nickel weighs 8.9 grams... 201 stainless is 15% Chromium and 5% Nickel by standard. 304 stainless is 18% Chromium and 9% Nickel by standard. This is just an example. I don't know the stainless types and I didn't do any math. Chromium or Chrome is what normally give it the shiny finish. In this situation the lighter container looks like a Chromium coating to compensate for using the cheaper stainless steel. I know other comments basically said the same thing. 😆 I just wanted to sound like I know what I'm talking about.

But, side note, Any burger on their menu can be altered...so you can get a regular cheeseburger, remove the ketchup and mustard and have special sauce added...all the big mac flavor without the extra calories.

🤔 the problem with paby powder is same as with flour. It sets, when left alone for too long. So if you shake that bottle, it will be filled up right to the top bc of the air being "inside" the powder instead of "outside". This says 500g, so if the weight is the same as before, there is no problem. 🤷‍♀️

Royal canin is one of the most tested pet foods, which is why it is expensive. It has everything your pet needs. Recently, there was a grain-free craze where people were putting their dogs on random brand grain-free diets because they thought dogs didn't need grains, or had allergies. Many dogs ended up with severe heart disease because of this. These foods were NOT extensively tested for safety and to ensure they had all the nutrients your dog needs. This has never happened with a RC food and never will, because the company ensures their food is complete nutrition to protect your pet's health. I'm not sure what ingredients you think are "c**p" in them, but they are everything your pet needs to stay healthy.

The actual reason for the change in volume of food for Royal Canin was can availability. The reduction in volume wasn't the goal, though yes, it would be nice if they would reduce the price in accordance with the reduced volume. I'm a vet, I called and asked about it around 2 years ago. There was a big shortage of their canned food (at least certain types) for several months, then some types started to come back but were in a different shape can. Since supply chain issues have not really improved, I imagine they are just happy they have a can supplier at all and aren't going to risk going back to the original cans any time soon.

I’m a veterinary technician and I personally and professionally vouch for RC. This particular food is made to keep the pH of the cat’s urine at a correct point as to prevent them from forming urinary crystals (struvite and calcium oxalate). These crystals can cause cats major discomfort and (mainly in males) can cause the urethra to obstruct. This prevents the cat from being able to pass urine and is a life threatening emergency that is very traumatic and costly. Have 2 of my own cats that this is the only food I would feed. They have proven that other diets will not keep the crystals at bay. One of my males did have an obstruction; got through it though. Another cat I have eats strictly RC Ultamino due to severe food intolerance/IBD. He would be dead if not for RC’s Rx diet. Don’t get me wrong though; the price kills me.

I really think they should be passing laws to prevent excess/ill fitting packaging. It’s as another person commented above, we will go through things more quickly, and it’s doubling the waste, because packaging sizes aren’t changing.

This is the same weak excuse I got from the makers of Cesar's dog treats who just stopped making the meaty bites. At least they said that they didn't sell enough to warrant keeping them in production. I do not, however, believe that people told them their dogs didn't like them.

The platen of the scale is visibly touching two other objects, the wall, and the bag on the left. That doesn't give me confidence in its accuracy.

    Jermel Randolph

You can calibrate any scale. For instance a Nickel weighs 5 grams. I have several nice scales for different things. I also have the weights they gave you for calibration. I can't speak for this scale but it doesn't seem to be touching the wall. See the tiny shadow...zoom in. The bag could throw it off. It depends, It could make it lighter or heavier. The scale has to be on a level surface to work properly. A Nickel on the scale would let us know the scale was accurate. The problem I have is idk whats in the package. You can reseal these packages.

Having worked in a food production environment they are allowed tolerances. Like if I did a cup of Papa John's ranch they wanted a weight of like 24.4g, bute it could be .5-.7g higher or lower and be acceptable. I'm not sure what their tolerance is, but +/- 9 grams doesn't seem like an acceptable amount 😅

It's probably better to get this in bulk (the giant refill bottles) and use to refill a nice pump. Cheap for like $3.00-$4.00 if you find at one of those mega stores or dollar+ marts. It also uses less plastic in the long run.

My guess is, one lid from a jar of "minced" garlic and the other is from "chopped", so that would account for the difference. It would take more "minced" to equal a clove than "chopped", since it's a smaller cut

1 TSP - "About 1 clove..." but 1/2 TSP = "Approx. 1 clove..." I didn't know that the difference between "about" and "Approx." was 1/2 TSP. Now I know! I'm writing that in my wife's cookbook chart. She'll thank me for that.

Not at ALL shrinkflation. If the price is lower with the smaller size that's just...the cos t of different sized products being different. So far about half of this list isn't actually shrinkflation though

the smaller ones usually have things like stud shooters to be PLAYsets, whereas UCS is closer to a display model built of Lego bricks. Yes it has interior, but only for if you want to display interior. It's not really a toy at all.

So…my husband roasts coffee and the beans do weigh less the longer you roast them. Obviously I cannot speak to the quality of Folgers improving because of this (their coffee is s**t), nor, to the truthfulness of their statement, but their reasoning for it weighing less is valid. If they did roast the beans longer to get a darker bean (resulting in a more robust flavor) it would weigh less if they were using the same amount of beans as before.

Yup. BW3 changed that a long time ago. You used to get a dozen wings for a certain price. Now you only get 10 wings, unless you pay quite a bit more, and then you get 15. You cannot buy a dozen wings anymore. So, I no longer patronize BW3. Those with a local business have much better deals and I prefer to see them succeed. Not my job to fund the stock payers of large corporate-owned businesses.

Anyone hating on box potatoes has never had the experience of forgetting about "fresh" potatoes in a cupboard or a pantry that rotted when they weren't paying attention. Falsely accused my roommate of only pretending to take the garbage out for like two weeks. So unpleasant to discover and clean up. So much nicer to have a clean box of flakes.

To me it's obvious that the 12 fl.oz. is skinnier than the other one. It's not shorter, just not as wide so this is not shrinkflation.

Yeah, in addition to size, they also cheaped out on the flavour - which is somewhat understandable because real vanilla has gotten astronomically expensive over recent years. Costco is the only place I seem to be able to find it for a reasonable price.

There's a splat (*) next to the "65% MORE" line. If you look for the corresponding splat at the bottom you'll see that it's "Compared to Clorox Disinfecting Toilet Wand Refills 6-count". But that's a lie too, because ten is only 60% more than six; not 65%.

No, the grain of both surfaces are at 90* to the substrate, it's a laminate/engineered of both, not solid hardwood. Also, thicker substrate is higher strength/insulation/shock absorption, much less likely to crack.

We are having our home redone slowly (for our own sanity and that of the pets) and have watched the prices skyrocketing. Three rooms to go and that’s just a small addition and three bedrooms (flooring and damage to walls) it’s now 25G over what an entire kitchen remodel, PLUS 2 other rooms cost.

That's not hardwood flooring. That's engineered flooring and it's always been made like this. And it's heavily dependent on price range as to what the various layers are made up of and how much of the presentation layer material is in place.

That's why I do something about it by mitigating how much of my own money I spend per month by dumpster diving. I know a lot of people are too proud to do this but it's a way of taking back from these fortune 500 companies that are robbing us consumers naked by quantity of products we pay for and the money itself we're paying to purchase our supplies. I find fresh food weekly with sell by dates weeks away from the days I do this and I save hundreds of dollars a month and thousands of dollars a year by doing this survival technique. From grocery stores, dollar stores, stores like Walgreens, to gas stations annually waste money in products in the billions of dollars yearly by throwing out good food that should be donated to food pantries and food banks. I take advantage of by doing my part in mitigating food waste and helping myself survive.

they actually don't surprisingly. I got one cuz of the novelty and easy of use and placed it on a little dish thinking it would also leak. In 4 months still has a solid seal and no leak I do like the ease of use because roommates tended to make the normal bottles have dribbles all over the bottle and counter and a huge build up blocking the tip.

Does the costs of producing a smaller can, designing and producing the plastic part, and, overall, retooling of the assembly line be cheaper than the 1.1 oz of chemicals in the product?

They have been doing a lot of these things lately. In 2019 Coke decided from one second to the next, that 500ml bottles now had a filling of 450ml for the same price of course. Didn't fly so well with the biggest grocery chains in Switzerland. They decided to boycott those products and Coke got kicked out of the stores. Later they actively circumvented the general importer and bought coke directly from Poland, where sizes were not yet changed. Same happened to some other big companys like Nestlé... The companies negotiated and now we're back to 500ml bottles. So boycott works, but only if the big stores help. Most people don't realize the problem bc the changes are not that easy to spot when shopping.

Would never work in the UK, the usual response to people boycotting or complaining is to drop the price a little, wait a week and put twice as much on as they took off.

It comes in several varieties, like cheeseburger macaroni, lasagna, beef stroganoff, crunchy taco, etc... You add a pound of browned ground beef to it and in 10 minutes you have a hit meal. It was a staple food for me during college and those days when you're just learning to cook and do it on a tight budget, kinda like how ramen noodle packs are! It's not too bad, but don't expect gourmet food, either!

And also all the nutritional values went down on the second jar due to the addition of water as a way to bulk up the product.

They're a bit like Dawn in that you really don't need much. You're better off with a box of powder rather than pods anyway, especially if you use the pre-wash option. But they are much more convenient.

It's true; the holes are for even cooking like donuts. And the holes aren't made with a hole punch that recycles the dough back. They're needles that smoosh the dough away a little. *I'm talking about the major brands in the US though, no idea how it might be in, say, China.

Not only that but based on decor, I'm gonna guess this is a sit down restaurant. Which means the largest cost (a disposable cup) isn't in the equation. Soft drinks are literally pennies for an entire glass. We've been paying a 1000% markup already for a single glass. This is just silly.

I don't count this as shrinkflation. I appreciate the honesty of this statement more than all the stupid excuses. Everyone's costs have gone up, including businesses and restaurants. This looks like a small restaurant, not a chain. I have no issue with a plain old 'look, we have to cut costs somewhere if we want to stay open. Sorry for the inconvenience; times are tough.'

You are comparing boards with different specifications. The 1920 is sawn timber (50 mm), 1960 is levelled (48 mm) and the 2019 is planed timber (45 mm). Those specifications existed one hundred years ago and are still available today, and there is a difference of 5 mm from the "biggest" to the "smallest", and it's allways been like this. Most "hobby carpenters" can only get hold of levelled or planed boards.

Peroni Nastro Azzuro is a brilliant beer, actually, and Italy has some great beers. Moretti is also a good brand. You are showing your ignorance and prejudice. My mother LOVES international beer and we get her a varied case every year for Christmas and Mother's Day and the Italian beers are top notch, and easily compete with a lot of German and Belgian beers. British beers tend to be the worst though. Sorry. They have good ales and such but not lagers.

All 100 percent juices still have added flavor. They have to do this because ‘juice’ is stored in vats for a year and has lost all flavor. The added flavor may be ‘natural’ but it is made from fruit that has been broken down into chemicals almost identical to artificial flavoring.
