50 Times People Were So Appalled By “Shrinkflation”, They Just Had To Share The Proof Online
If you've noticed your bar of Toblerone looking rather small and a far cry from how you remember it in your childhood, rest assured, you’re not the only one. In fact, consumers around the world are increasingly paying more for a growing range of products in ways that don’t show up on receipts.
Think of shrunk portions, thinner rolls, lighter bags, smaller cans — in this way, companies try to offset rising labor and materials costs without scaring us all off. But are they really succeeding? Also known as shrinkflation, the phenomenon has surely been noticed and well documented by people don’t find it fair to pay the same for a lesser net weight.
One such online destination, a subreddit called “Shrinkflation,” is dedicated to sharing some of the most deliberate and annoying examples of paying more for less spotted in practice. Below we wrapped up a collection of posts from there.

This Is Insane
It would cost more to change the manufacturing process whether that's to make the package bigger or smaller.
Load More Replies...Wasteful packaging should be illegal! It’s bad enough all the plastic etc when it’s actually useful but this is just taking the p155.
That should be illegal. All that waste just to look like more that will end up in a dump somewhere. Sad.
Bought my regular package of cookies last week. They now use a spacer to drop content from 8 to 5, the blighters!
Can you believe that s**t? They also put Alum in chapstick type products so that your lips get dry, so you'll use more!
Hair conditioner is ninety percent alcohol, so the more you use the drier your hair gets so then you think need more and use more and your hair gets drier and on and on. Also, most moisturizers are made with petroleum products that dry out your skin in the long run.
Load More Replies...I’ve Been Bamboozled
That is quite common with cosmetics, unfortunately. You'd better judge the content based on mentioned weight of content instead of the size of the jar
I hear that, but until you have bought it, you don't know how dense the cosmetic is.
Load More Replies...Making smaller jars is too expensive, it's cheaper to make inserts for the average size jar.
Load More Replies...No it's shrinkflation, they purposely use an insert to reduce the actual amount going in the larger jar.
Load More Replies...That’s rude. I guess they had plenty of that size of containers already made before they decided to cheat people.
Terry's Chocolate Orange Is Now Just "Terry's Orange" With The Word "Chocolatey" In The Description
This indicates that the quality has been reduced to the point where they cannot legally call it chocolate anymore
It is awesome and comes in white or dark chocolate too!
Load More Replies...if both are 157 grams, what did they replace the chocolate with? wax?
I live in Canada and we happen to have one in the house and ours says Terry's Orange milk chocolate confection, not chocolatey.
Ah, then it's true. It's now a confection- a sweet. Sure, it's a milk chocolate flavoured confection, but it's not a chocolate any more. I just looked it up - the size, design and recipe have all chnged in recent years and it's under the local legal limit of chcolate ingredients so it must be called something else.
Load More Replies...Even in Canada it is gross now. Used to be a Christmas luxury. So sad.
Once the USA gets hold of things they go down all for profit, but I doubt Europe will fall for it for long, Britain has already noticed the decline in taste
Load More Replies...Or it indicates that someone copyrighted "chocolate orange". This is a big assumption you're making.
Copyright wouldn't matter. Various foods, like cheese and chocolate, can't have those words as part of the name unless they meet a certain percentage of it in the product. Not enough cocoa in your chocolate? Can't have chocolate in the name. Chocolaty orange would be allowed though.
Load More Replies...It could also be standards in "real" were changed, because I've been seeing the same thing with ice cream after the standard of air to cream was changed. A lot.lpre "dairy dessert' products now
Still chocolate here in the USA... They dropped the weight. my wife carries on my mother's tradition of putting a Terry's chocolate orange in all stockings for Christmas.
Shrinkflation is a form of retail camouflage in which consumers pay more for a growing range of products without actually realizing it. By shrinking usual product sizes and net weight, companies and businesses aim to cover rising labor and material costs without increasing the prices.
According to Edgar Dworsky, a consumer advocate and lawyer who has authored a number of consumer protection laws, including the regulations under which the Massachusetts Lemon Law operates, consumers check the price every time they buy, but they don’t check the net weight. Dworsky has been tracking shrinkflation for more than 30 years, and he shares the results on his website Consumer World.
Sometimes I Like To Flip The Chips In The Store Shelves
that's bad example, don't look at how big the bag is, look at net weight of stuff inside. so much air is needed so the chips won't break during transport.
Hate to be the "actually" guy, but it's nitrogen inside. Air would turn them quickly while nitrogen helps them last longer without spoilage.
Load More Replies...For chips, this is actually a bit necessary. That's not air in there; it's nitrogen, I believe. It helps keep it fresh and keep its crisp through store shelf time. I mean, ever notice how more or less your bag of chips has always been crispy upon opening but after opening it slowly grows stale? You haven't always been selecting chips within days of going stale; you opened it and took the nitrogen away. They need a pretty good amount of nitrogen gas to keep it in "stasis" as it were.
I'm so sick of people thinking they are getting screwed on chips. There has always been a large amount of hydrogen in the bags to help keep them fresh and also act as cushion for shipping. If the chips were filled to the top there wouldn't be a whole chip left. Just look at the weight. It doesn't matter how much air in the bag. If it's 10 oz on the pack you are okay ng for 10 oz smh
It's nitrogen, lol. Hydrogen would be a whole other problem. XD
Load More Replies...Ah Yes ± 25ml, Thank You WD-40
You can't always get the last amount of oil out of the can before the pressure has gone. Leaving oil in the can that's thrown away. My experience has told me that the smaller cans (100ml) are the worse for this. I went through a phase of opening up the "empty" cans to see how much was left. Maybe I should have formalized the results and publicized them for widespread comparison. https://www.facebook.com/739827619/videos/3134983986753041/
Since WD40 isn't hazardous, you can smash the can a bit to generate some extra pressure to get that last bit out.
Load More Replies...Hey, Manufacturers. If you're going to shrink the amount, shrink the container. Be honest. Maybe save a bit in the process. You'd have more respect from your consumers.
Probably they still had the old container size available and simply gave it a new print...
Load More Replies...Judging by the print, I'd say the two bottles were intended for two different markets. The +25% bottle was intended for the German market while the left bottle was targeted towards a more universal European market.
Yes I was thinking that too because it has English underneath the name of the bottle on the left one and the right one only has German
Load More Replies...The dimensions of the container is not what you are paying for, it's the volume of the contents inside. I wonder if the person weighed both cans to see if there was a difference.
Never mind, I didn't read the net weight. Shame!!!
Load More Replies...Just drill a hole in the airless can and drain into a spray bottle or drill and add a tire valve sealed to the can then add air until you can spray again. Use at your own risk.
The Shrinkflation Of The Old Pringles Design (165g) To The New (134g)
The new Mr. Pringles man looks like a villain compared to the old one, so of course his chips would be smaller. The man looks like he should be twirling his mustache and evil laughing at us.
Oh wow, you're right! I'll never unsee that again 😅
Load More Replies...Not only shrank chip size they taste totally different. The new ones taste AWFUL.🤔🤢🤮 Hey Pringles! Sometimes size does matter. No more Pringles ever
It's because (at least in Australia) they changed the factories from USA/Mexico to Indonesia. We only get the Indonesian/Asian ones now. All the flavors completely changed; they are pretty bad now.
Load More Replies...Not only that, but getting your hand stuck in the tube is more likely with the smaller container
And their newer ads act like people should be fine with that
Load More Replies...Pringles are not actual potato chips (US) or crisps (UK), they are compressed extruded instant mashed potato, like the fake mashed potatoes that come in a box, turned into a snack-shaped atrocity. Do not eat them. Eat actual potatoes instead! Real chips/crisps for a treat, and whole spuds as a healthy carbohydrate side dish. Even better -- don't peel your potatoes, eat them skin-on. As with most vegetables in the Solanum family, most of the vitamins in potatoes are located right under the skin, which is why you should never peel potatoes, eggplants or tomatoes. Just scrub your potatoes really well under cold water, cook them however you like them, and enjoy!
Boxed potatoes are real potatoes. They're just dehydrated. Obviously, doesn't taste like if you made them yourself, but they're not fake potatoes.
Load More Replies...This perfectly sums up aging... losing hair on the head and the happiness in the eyes and getting a shrinking rounder body... 😅
You would think that the can on the right would be from before and the one on the right would be used and made after. I'm definitely surprised by this one
“When the price of raw materials, like coffee beans or paper pulp goes up, manufacturers are faced with a choice: Do we raise the price knowing consumers will see it and grumble about it? Or do we give them a little bit less and accomplish the same thing? Often it’s easier to do the latter,” Dworsky told The Washington Post.
This Shrinkflation Of Toblerone In The UK, Is Still Mind-Boggling
Not a bad thing! The most violent chocolate in the world. It tricks you! You try gnawing it down and the sweet taste starts to melt in your mouth, Then you get brave and bite down only to get the roof of your mouth punctured by the chocolate Swiss alps!
You need to eat it upside down. At least that's how I, as a Swiss, do it
Load More Replies...I'm a Swiss, our Toblerone here is a lot thicker and basically has no gaps at all ... Weird
When I was a kid in the U.K., they were thicker and closer together then too!
Load More Replies...When I was at college the teacher told us an anecdote of a guy who supposedly called a company who manufactured toothpaste and said he could improve sales by 15% overnight for a fee. They refused and set their minds on figuring it out. They failed and asked him how, he said, make the hole bigger. Made us rethink our approach to improving revenue.
Don’t come at me with obvious simple explanations! Way more fun to be ignorantly outraged !!
Load More Replies...Inflation In The UK 344% Up For A Bag Of Rice From Last Year
Well that's nothing, in America our last Vice President was only one Pence and we still felt overcharged...
It’s absolutely disgusting what the UK put up with . There is literally NO reason for it, other than the lies the government feed to the media . Where’s all the online money from lockdown . Where’s the missing BILLIONS from the frauds .
Everyone should look up how inflation rates are actually calculated, and more importantly, what they leave out. It's literally only a metric for investment. It does NOT actually reflect the real value of your money. If the government reports a % for inflation - at least double it.
Yes, there's many inflation measures; CPI, PCE, WPI, etc. They are used for different purposes.
Load More Replies...This is happening everywhere. It was due to the pandemic, but then greed set in.
No, this inflation, at least in America, is caused by faulty monetary policy in which Yellen kept interest rates at near 0% for fears of deflation and recession during the pandemic; now we're seeing the results of this inflated money supply raising demand above NGDP, causing inflation.
Load More Replies...And there are those who maintain that this is somehow Joe Biden's fault.
I can assure you with absolute certainty that nobody in the UK has ever given Joe Biden a second thought in regards to this, never mind maintain the idea it is his fault 🤷♀️
Load More Replies..."Nothing to see here, inflation is just 8.5%, trust us!" - the people who have lied in the last 2 years even 10x more than usual
Is It Shrinkflation When They Just Lie About The Weight? Paid For 12 Oz Of Fish, Got 10.6 Including The Wrapping
That is actually fraud and worse yet they tampered with the scales which, depending on the jurisdiction, is a federal level crime. Report with documentation to the agency in charge of weights and measures. The local popo wouldn't give a damn.
Load More Replies...That is actually highly illegal and, if in the US, should be reported to the weights and measures division of the government
That's just theft. If you live in the states you can report them to the weights and measurements department or whatever they are called in your area. Could be an honest mistake but probably not.
No, that's fraud. The supermarket needs to correct their scale and you should take this to a consumer protection agency such as the Better Business Bureau or FTC
Considering the frequency with which supermarket scales are checked and the fact that this crummy kitchen scale isn't even able to be calibrated it is likely at fault here.
Load More Replies...They probably set their scales off on purpose . So even if you're looking at it as they are weighing it, it's fraudulent.
Yeah.. that can't happen.. lol.. unless maybe a different country, but in Massachusetts, all scales are checked regularly, it's illegal for ANY market.. even BY ACCIDENT to do that. They even have to check the different tares, for different containers and wrappings. Either this is BS for views, or theft .. as Something stated.. or in a place that doesn't have strict laws.
I ONLY read b******t. It seems ur fish was gutted and cleaned to BE eaten properly right? The fish GOES into the scale like he comes from the docs. Any cleaning that people ask employes to do is obviously at the client cost, or just do ir urself at home. See ya sherlocks
No. They did not buy this at the docks. They bought it at a grocery store. When it was weighed it had already been cleaned and and cut it and ready to be cooked and then eaten. You are incorrect, Sherlock.
Load More Replies...Are you sure your scale is accurate? I do a lot of work with scales and they can be off. Or this is just a picture for likes and they just tared it with a some weight already on it
Dworsky also argues that when small bags of candy have been downsized, you are not likely to eat two bags instead. "But for orange juice, cereal, paper towels, toilet paper, peanut butter, whatever — consumers just have to buy it more often."
Although products don’t shrink by half and the changes are usually barely noticeable, these little differences add up to your pocketbook. If you're getting 10% to 12% less of a product, that's equivalent to a 10% price increase, and if you’re a regular consumer of that product, you will start feeling the difference pretty soon.
This Must Be Their Way Of Saying “We Decreased The Amount But Kept The Container Size The Same” (Oikos Yogurt, 5.3 Oz)
I'm actually ok with that as long as I understand that's what's going on. I usually add something like berries or granola and having a little extra space is helpful.
I know! I used to eat this brand of yogurt and when I mixed in granola, it would always force some of the yogurt onto the counter, making a HUGE mess. So at least they gave a good reason. 🙃
Load More Replies...This has actually been a feature for many years and is quite nice. Though still not enough room for fruits AND granola 🤣
I give them a pass on this too - room for toppings is nice. I figured out how to make my own and it’s crazy easy - Google Intantpot yogurt using Fairlife milk
I occasionally make my own soy yogurt from powdered soy milk from our local bulk foods store(for some reason, soy yogurt is not something you can buy in Canada). It is absolutely dirt cheap - because it turns out powdered soy milk costs 90% less than powdered dairy milk, somehow. Our government fixes the prices of dairy products, and it's really screwing over the consumer right now.
Load More Replies...There is also room for anything small you don't mind getting all gooey.
I laughed unreasonably hard at this. Toddlers everywhere would agree with your comment.
Load More Replies...I could see why you'd think that, and it could very well be the case with some brands. In this case however I have not seen any diminished volume. A lot of people add fresh fruit, nuts or granola to their yogurt and it is frustrating when half of your toppings hit the floor due to insufficient room for mixing. Before Danon acquired the rights, it was a product of StoneyField Farms and even then (early 2000's) I believe there was extra room for toppings. I can thoroughly appreciate your skepticism however, as "shrinkflation" continues to flagrantly violate consumer's trust.
The used to be 8oz when I was a kid. They have been 6oz for a very long time now after the 'diet' craze. No one can live off of a 100cal yogurt for a meal as advertised.
When I Was A Teen, These Stretched The Length Of The Package. Those Were The Days
one time my daughter had a black hole on her tongue and we rushed to the dentist ($$$) before she finally admit that she had two packs of that thing the night before... iiissshhhh...
Sour candy is the best, but it does literally damage your mouth from the acidity
Load More Replies...These killed my dog. She got into them and got pancreatitis. I spent nearly 8 grand trying for a week to save her. She finally went into respiratory and cardiac arrest at the emergency vet and couldn’t be revived. Please watch these around your pets.
I'm so sorry about your dog! I can't even imagine. Mine had pancreatitis and we almost lost her last fall. Fortunately, we got her to the emergency vet on time and she's doing good now.
Load More Replies...Honestly if we can trick kids into eating half as much candy this whole shrinkflation might be a good thing.
Very true some times it's for our own good. The demand for super size food is why others say Americans are overweight
Load More Replies...When I was a kid they were the size of a fire hose and you needed two shopping carts to get one out to the car.
What’s the point of extra plastic packaging? More for sea creatures to eat.
Why not shorten the package also? Seems like that might help keep prices the same.
They used to be hard for kid me to get out without getting sugar all over all my fingers but now I can lift them out no problem there's so much God damn room. Plus they're hard as s**t now
The Top Box Is From A Well Established Reoccurring Promotion
I see what they did there. Very clever . Took me a moment to see lack of % sign.
And the savings on all the red ink it took to print millions of % signs.... wow!!!
On the other hand, we can try to see the positive side of shrinkflation and argue that we may indeed be saving some calories. In the context of the obesity pandemic, this may be a small but important step. When six-packs of bagels go from 24 oz to 22 to 20 oz, the chances are you will still be buying the same number of packages but end up eating a lesser amount of food.
These Used To Be 6 To A Pack. Same Price Of Course
Same thing happened to chicken fil a frozen lemonade..... use to come in sizes and I always got the large at 3.75........ then a bit over a year ago they made the only size a small and raised the price to 4.25..... so you get less for more than a large used to cost..... I was so mad we stopped going to chick FIL a
everyone should stop going to chick-fil-a anyway. they're homophobic af
Load More Replies...So the price of bagels increased 20% and the price of cream cheese increased 25%.
Load More Replies...Wendy's Frosty shrunk as well. Used to be a 20oz cup for a large, now it's only a 16oz cup.
What really sucks too, is alternative options like say the grocery brand have also followed suit. Dempster’s sets the price and amount for not just their own products, but for most of the market, too.
At Dollar General, I used to buy 10 sponges, with a scour pad on one side for $2, Lasts about 2 months. Last month, I had to buy more. The package now has 5 for $1. Why not just add a $1, instead of repackaging to a smaller version. That more money!
Surprised that the price was kept the same. Usually they shrink the size or amount and inflate the price. Not saying we shouldn't still be upset bout this. But it does still surprise me.
I Remember When The "Good Stuff" Mix-In Cup Was Full In Chobani Yogurts. Now Less Than Half
I used to love the Chocolate Haze Craze when they first came out. Then they changed it, made it cheaper and it's not the same now.
If I saw this I'd immediately assume some factory worker nommed on some of my toppings.
Oh wow, I didn't now there was an American knock-off of this yoghurt. Did anyone try this and the original version both and can elaborate which one is better?
Breyers Chocolate Chip Used To Be Jammed With Chocolate, Now It’s Almost Just Plain Vanilla
To be fair, the container does say “chocolate chip” not chips. Anything past one chip and they probably feel like we really shouldn’t complain.
Lol can we just all focus on the fact that the container is almost empty?
I Bought A New IKEA Utensil Holder And It Kept Tipping Over. Turns Out It's The Same Dimensions And Material As The Old One I Have But It Weighs Over 50% Less
If it's steel, it absolutely could be the same material. Steel can be made surprisingly thin before it begins to compromise from a strength standpoint. The problem here is that it doesn't weigh enough to hold the intended contents without falling over, not that it's deforming due to the weight.
Load More Replies...I don't have a caliper built into my eyes, so maybe it's thinner maybe not. I do know that companies will use 201 stainless in place of 304 stainless to save money. Chromium and Nickel both play roles in the density, chemical resistance, hardness and look. Chromium weighs 7.4 grams per cubic centimeter. Nickel weighs 8.9 grams... 201 stainless is 15% Chromium and 5% Nickel by standard. 304 stainless is 18% Chromium and 9% Nickel by standard. This is just an example. I don't know the stainless types and I didn't do any math. Chromium or Chrome is what normally give it the shiny finish. In this situation the lighter container looks like a Chromium coating to compensate for using the cheaper stainless steel. I know other comments basically said the same thing. 😆 I just wanted to sound like I know what I'm talking about.
Funny.. almost looks that the logo in the lighter one spells like IKFA, not IKEA in the photo…
Oreo Filling Isn't Just Thinner... Now It Doesn't Even Reach The Edge
The double stuffed are what is says you will get on the normal ones :p
Load More Replies...Oreos are my treat. This is not the norm at all. This may be an off-brand or just an anomaly in the packaging process.
I just had some and was thinking the exact same thing.
Load More Replies...Nope, clearly the cookies were just made too large. They will fix it soon, don't worry...
My Oreos! What are they doing to my Oreos! First my Toblerone, then my precious Oreos! Noooo
With many products available globally, I wonder if it is only in America that they deceive customers so much, because many of these situations do not take place in Poland. Maybe it matters where the snacks are produced.
Yes another one who knows Oreo is a knockoff
Load More Replies...This Is Now “Double Stuffed”
This one is false. I buy these all the time and they don't look like this.
That is not a double stuff. At least not the ones that I occasionally get. They're still stuffed like they used to be
Why bother, the only way any thing is going to change is if we decide to STOP buying the products. They will get the point if they lose money.
Big Mac Hit With The Shrink Ray?
They had three sizes of Mac a while ago. Big Mac, Mac and Single. Now they are back to the Big Mac. But, side note, Any burger on their menu can be altered...so you can get a regular cheeseburger, remove the ketchup and mustard and have special sauce added...all the big mac flavor without the extra calories.
Load More Replies...I'd be ashamed calling that a big Mac. Looks like they're using the Happy meal burger to make it.
Wendys has done the same, the tx double cheeseburger is tiny like this, and Jr bacon cheeseburger is smaller too.
Load More Replies...I noticed that the last time I had one as well. I go once a month out to eat and this will no longer be one I splurge on. They raised the price and halved the size. Not even worth the time. Might as well make my own. It would be healthier any how.
Had a quarter pounder the other day and while the burger patty was still the right size, the bun was smaller. Meaning I had about an inch of burger patty sticking out of the bun all the way around. So not just the big macs
They Couldn't Even Wait Until The Old One Was Gone To Put Up The New Size
These are just another waist of money and resources. These companies have tricked you into thinking clothes need to smell like artificial scents to be considered clean.
Yep! Time's a-coming when you will get to buy the same familiar-sized container, same price, same blurb on the outside, same everything - just with absolutely nothing inside! And when (if...) you complain, you'll be told that what you are actually paying for is the total nostalgic experience of buying something you used to enjoy, and now can only sadly remember...
Kathy, very clever and my all time favorite comment! :)
Load More Replies...There is five word difference. And two dollar difference as well. But it’s all worth it for the five words!/s
The Walmart in town has a ton of stuff on the shelves that have the original weight beside their new downsized stuff. It's total b******t to think people are going to buy less at original price when the big stuff is still on shelves.
Yes but...the "regular" price is 7.26 for 13.2oz and the new 10oz container is 2.32 more at 9.58. That's a 74% price increase.
Yes, This Is New And Unused
The laws should do something to protect the consumers if not, we will just “consume” and throw away plastic at a alarming rate
We already have enough littered plastics, Kardashians and all!
Load More Replies...🤔 the problem with paby powder is same as with flour. It sets, when left alone for too long. So if you shake that bottle, it will be filled up right to the top bc of the air being "inside" the powder instead of "outside". This says 500g, so if the weight is the same as before, there is no problem. 🤷♀️
I thought we're not supposed to use baby powder anymore. Something about all these lawsuits and ovarian cancer...
Same, I thought they took it off the market
Load More Replies...Either that or people have been 'sampling' it at the store. You'd be surprised by how many people do that.
Johnson and Johnson.. a family company! (Shhhh.. only this generation of family though , screw the planet full of plastic for generations of the future)
To be fair, powder is very fluffy when it is filled into the container and settles during shipping.
Pack Of Gum
I'd love to see the stats how much they save per year on this. Must be a shitload, like that time an airline took out 1 olive from every salad and ended up saving hundreds of thousands on fuel...
Because less people were flying as the olive was gone, or because this many olives cost so much?
Load More Replies...Nice touch putting double frowns where your missing piece of gum should be.
I always chew three of the tiny things anyway... this math works for me.
Extra has been like that as long as I can remember... They call it a grip. Easy pull.
Plenty Of Room To Spare
My money don't jiggle jiggle, it gets wasted on lying toothpaste
Load More Replies...But, but! We need to trick the customers into thanking they're buying something for a good price!
Load More Replies...one would think that the price of a box would also be reduced if the box was smaller.. More savings!!
No, it's because the box MUST be the same size as the shop basics range! Which is just as good, but half the price!
Load More Replies...I don't get it. You're buying toothpaste. You know that there's a tube inside and you know what a tube of toothpaste looks like, length wise. Why would you be fooled by the cardboard? Weird.
Cat Food. Was $55 For 24, 5.8 Oz Cans. Now $62 For 24, 5.1 Oz Cans. That's .7 Oz. Less Per Can, And $7 More Per Case
and strangely it is one of the most expensive pet foods, yet has the worst quality - full of c**p
Well this is medicine food for cats. Our cat had to eat it because of a long bladder infection. Ofc it's expensive - it's classified as "medicine".
Load More Replies...Royal canin is one of the most tested pet foods, which is why it is expensive. It has everything your pet needs. Recently, there was a grain-free craze where people were putting their dogs on random brand grain-free diets because they thought dogs didn't need grains, or had allergies. Many dogs ended up with severe heart disease because of this. These foods were NOT extensively tested for safety and to ensure they had all the nutrients your dog needs. This has never happened with a RC food and never will, because the company ensures their food is complete nutrition to protect your pet's health. I'm not sure what ingredients you think are "c**p" in them, but they are everything your pet needs to stay healthy.
I feed my dachshund Royal Canin. Now I'm worried. Are you a rep from RC or just someone who has researched?
Load More Replies...I bought that for my cat on a vet reco. My cat wouldn't touch it. They reimbursed me for the entire cost and told me to just donate the food to a pet shelter. So, not a total loss, but definitely sticker shock.
I mean, my cat is like that with Hills, but he likes the RC stuff
Load More Replies...Making sure the company profits whilst the consumer suffers, capitalism 101
The actual reason for the change in volume of food for Royal Canin was can availability. The reduction in volume wasn't the goal, though yes, it would be nice if they would reduce the price in accordance with the reduced volume. I'm a vet, I called and asked about it around 2 years ago. There was a big shortage of their canned food (at least certain types) for several months, then some types started to come back but were in a different shape can. Since supply chain issues have not really improved, I imagine they are just happy they have a can supplier at all and aren't going to risk going back to the original cans any time soon.
I’m a veterinary technician and I personally and professionally vouch for RC. This particular food is made to keep the pH of the cat’s urine at a correct point as to prevent them from forming urinary crystals (struvite and calcium oxalate). These crystals can cause cats major discomfort and (mainly in males) can cause the urethra to obstruct. This prevents the cat from being able to pass urine and is a life threatening emergency that is very traumatic and costly. Have 2 of my own cats that this is the only food I would feed. They have proven that other diets will not keep the crystals at bay. One of my males did have an obstruction; got through it though. Another cat I have eats strictly RC Ultamino due to severe food intolerance/IBD. He would be dead if not for RC’s Rx diet. Don’t get me wrong though; the price kills me.
Oreos Shipped With Three Cookies Face Down
About 12 (an Oreo face down takes up about 3 Oreos standing horizontal, there are usually 36 horizontal Oreos in a pack, so divide 36 by 3 and you get 12)
Load More Replies...I'd say two or three more in each row would fit so what 6 or 9 ... Oreo stealing Aholes
I really think they should be passing laws to prevent excess/ill fitting packaging. It’s as another person commented above, we will go through things more quickly, and it’s doubling the waste, because packaging sizes aren’t changing.
Omg! This Is The Best One Yet! From The Previous Post About Bolthouse Dressing, I Called Them Out On Twitter. Lmao
Sure, that's totally the reason for reducing the size of the bottle, we all believe you.
Even the Queen has stopped attending their banquettes, how about that for a statement!
Keep telling yourself that and maybe you'll believe it. I've rarely ever thrown away salad dressing that reached it's expiration date before I finished it.
This is the same weak excuse I got from the makers of Cesar's dog treats who just stopped making the meaty bites. At least they said that they didn't sell enough to warrant keeping them in production. I do not, however, believe that people told them their dogs didn't like them.

Nugo Bars Advertised As 50g But Coming In At 41g
And it is here in the US. Unfortunately, the FTC has bigger fish to fry than to weight every candy bar.
Load More Replies...The platen of the scale is visibly touching two other objects, the wall, and the bag on the left. That doesn't give me confidence in its accuracy.
You can calibrate any scale. For instance a Nickel weighs 5 grams. I have several nice scales for different things. I also have the weights they gave you for calibration. I can't speak for this scale but it doesn't seem to be touching the wall. See the tiny shadow...zoom in. The bag could throw it off. It depends, It could make it lighter or heavier. The scale has to be on a level surface to work properly. A Nickel on the scale would let us know the scale was accurate. The problem I have is idk whats in the package. You can reseal these packages.
Load More Replies...Having worked in a food production environment they are allowed tolerances. Like if I did a cup of Papa John's ranch they wanted a weight of like 24.4g, bute it could be .5-.7g higher or lower and be acceptable. I'm not sure what their tolerance is, but +/- 9 grams doesn't seem like an acceptable amount 😅
It might of been a slower one from a bach, since the US law is based on distribution average weights....
That's with the wrapper too, the bar itself is supposed to weigh 50g..

I think that's actually kitchen roll... which normally do have larger rolls
You may be right, It looks like it says "napkin rolls" on the package as well

The 2021 core is larger. I noticed this recently when I bought a name brand tp.
So they make the super mega roll that rubs the wall and is hard to use when new because it is too big for the TP holder, but now they are making the tube bigger so it is still inconvenient but also less TP
Better get a bidet (easy to install on your toilet and only around $ 50).

Shrinkflation Has Been Hitting Everything
They are getting bigger since 1 clove fit and now 1 clove is too big lol how stupid do they think we are anyway? Stupid enough to keep buying it I guess.
Load More Replies...My guess is, one lid from a jar of "minced" garlic and the other is from "chopped", so that would account for the difference. It would take more "minced" to equal a clove than "chopped", since it's a smaller cut
1 TSP - "About 1 clove..." but 1/2 TSP = "Approx. 1 clove..." I didn't know that the difference between "about" and "Approx." was 1/2 TSP. Now I know! I'm writing that in my wife's cookbook chart. She'll thank me for that.
I can see how they could get away with that, there are tiny cloves that would be like a quarter teaspoon and I just found some last week that would be like a tablespoon!
Even LEGO Can't Escape!
To be fair, the 2010 model was an ultimate collector's set that retailed for $260 and the 2021 set retails for about $70. So not really shrinkflation.
Not at ALL shrinkflation. If the price is lower with the smaller size that's just...the cos t of different sized products being different. So far about half of this list isn't actually shrinkflation though
Load More Replies...Legos has always done this. They'll make one version of a popular item that is super big and make multiple other sizes of the same item that have significantly less detail and function.
the smaller ones usually have things like stud shooters to be PLAYsets, whereas UCS is closer to a display model built of Lego bricks. Yes it has interior, but only for if you want to display interior. It's not really a toy at all.

Obviously I cannot speak to the quality of Folgers improving because of this (their coffee is s**t), nor, to the truthfulness of their statement, but their reasoning for it weighing less is valid. If they did roast the beans longer to get a darker bean (resulting in a more robust flavor) it would weigh less if they were using the same amount of beans as before.

This Is Getting Serious
Yup. BW3 changed that a long time ago. You used to get a dozen wings for a certain price. Now you only get 10 wings, unless you pay quite a bit more, and then you get 15. You cannot buy a dozen wings anymore. So, I no longer patronize BW3. Those with a local business have much better deals and I prefer to see them succeed. Not my job to fund the stock payers of large corporate-owned businesses.
Maybe Dominoes could invest in a chef to teach them the sweet spot between "this food is so unseasoned it reached out and unseasoned other peoples seasoned food" and "This garlic tastes GREAT with a little crust added to it". Then maybe they'd have enough customers to be able to afford a 10 wing deal.
Buy an air fryer, cook an entire family pack of wings and enjoy yourself. Bet you can ROI quickly.

Y'all complain over the most inane c**p. I use boxed mashed. Why? 1. Can stock up and it lasts longer. 2. Cutting and mashing potatos is a surprisingly taxing activity and I'm physically disabled :|
Anyone hating on box potatoes has never had the experience of forgetting about "fresh" potatoes in a cupboard or a pantry that rotted when they weren't paying attention. Falsely accused my roommate of only pretending to take the garbage out for like two weeks. So unpleasant to discover and clean up. So much nicer to have a clean box of flakes.
It takes a long time for a potato to rot. How often do you look (or not look) in that cupboard?
Load More Replies...I think we should all go back to making more stuff on our own instead of relying on big corp companies to supply it! If they don’t sell as much of their products to us, it will show on their bottom line! A lot of this stuff is easy to make plus you can taylor it to your own liking instead of whatever they think you should eat or have.
If the container is wider than the box, this is obviously going to be the outcome.
I hope all the people that defended potato flakes are just as passionate when it comes to more important issues. I think they are gross but I'm glad I learned 10 different uses for them I'd never thought off. I think I will buy myself box. See progress is possible with potatoes.

There's a splat (*) next to the "65% MORE" line. If you look for the corresponding splat at the bottom you'll see that it's "Compared to Clorox Disinfecting Toilet Wand Refills 6-count". But that's a lie too, because ten is only 60% more than six; not 65%.
Transitional marketing plan. Make the 10 count seem like a sale, then end the “sale” reduce them to a pack of 6 for the same price.

Wood Flooring, Now With Less Hardwood!
It’s quite normal that there are sold different qualities. You have to compare (and pay more) to get the thick ones.
yeah, those are two completely different products
Load More Replies...The one is an actual hardwood floor and the other is a laminate flooring. That is very different flooring.
No, the grain of both surfaces are at 90* to the substrate, it's a laminate/engineered of both, not solid hardwood. Also, thicker substrate is higher strength/insulation/shock absorption, much less likely to crack.
Load More Replies...Wood flooring and laminate have always come in different thicknesses.
We are having our home redone slowly (for our own sanity and that of the pets) and have watched the prices skyrocketing. Three rooms to go and that’s just a small addition and three bedrooms (flooring and damage to walls) it’s now 25G over what an entire kitchen remodel, PLUS 2 other rooms cost.
in this pic, there's MORE hardwood. There is less softwood substrate, though.
Building supply products vary over time. Dimensions and parts availability are a headache. Not to mention lumber prices doubling. Owning an older home... be prepared.
That's why I do something about it by mitigating how much of my own money I spend per month by dumpster diving. I know a lot of people are too proud to do this but it's a way of taking back from these fortune 500 companies that are robbing us consumers naked by quantity of products we pay for and the money itself we're paying to purchase our supplies. I find fresh food weekly with sell by dates weeks away from the days I do this and I save hundreds of dollars a month and thousands of dollars a year by doing this survival technique. From grocery stores, dollar stores, stores like Walgreens, to gas stations annually waste money in products in the billions of dollars yearly by throwing out good food that should be donated to food pantries and food banks. I take advantage of by doing my part in mitigating food waste and helping myself survive.

Haven't These Always Been 24 Packs?
They have been doing a lot of these things lately. In 2019 Coke decided from one second to the next, that 500ml bottles now had a filling of 450ml for the same price of course. Didn't fly so well with the biggest grocery chains in Switzerland. They decided to boycott those products and Coke got kicked out of the stores. Later they actively circumvented the general importer and bought coke directly from Poland, where sizes were not yet changed. Same happened to some other big companys like Nestlé... The companies negotiated and now we're back to 500ml bottles. So boycott works, but only if the big stores help. Most people don't realize the problem bc the changes are not that easy to spot when shopping.
Would never work in the UK, the usual response to people boycotting or complaining is to drop the price a little, wait a week and put twice as much on as they took off.

Does This Count?
Not only that but based on decor, I'm gonna guess this is a sit down restaurant. Which means the largest cost (a disposable cup) isn't in the equation. Soft drinks are literally pennies for an entire glass. We've been paying a 1000% markup already for a single glass. This is just silly.
Load More Replies...I don't count this as shrinkflation. I appreciate the honesty of this statement more than all the stupid excuses. Everyone's costs have gone up, including businesses and restaurants. This looks like a small restaurant, not a chain. I have no issue with a plain old 'look, we have to cut costs somewhere if we want to stay open. Sorry for the inconvenience; times are tough.'

You are comparing boards with different specifications. The 1920 is sawn timber (50 mm), 1960 is levelled (48 mm) and the 2019 is planed timber (45 mm). Those specifications existed one hundred years ago and are still available today, and there is a difference of 5 mm from the "biggest" to the "smallest", and it's allways been like this. Most "hobby carpenters" can only get hold of levelled or planed boards.
So now we're boycotting....*checks notes*...yep wood and ice, everyone! On top of every single commercial product that exists now, has ever existed, and will exist in the future. Wood and ice too now. Oh Rob...

Well, if you trust the Italians with beer making you just get what you deserve! German, Dutch, British, to name but a few.
Peroni Nastro Azzuro is a brilliant beer, actually, and Italy has some great beers. Moretti is also a good brand. You are showing your ignorance and prejudice. My mother LOVES international beer and we get her a varied case every year for Christmas and Mother's Day and the Italian beers are top notch, and easily compete with a lot of German and Belgian beers. British beers tend to be the worst though. Sorry. They have good ales and such but not lagers.

Cranberry pineapple "flavour". From concentrate "with added ingredients". Wtf is in this stuff??
All 100 percent juices still have added flavor. They have to do this because ‘juice’ is stored in vats for a year and has lost all flavor. The added flavor may be ‘natural’ but it is made from fruit that has been broken down into chemicals almost identical to artificial flavoring.
Biscoff 1.15oz Less For The Same Price!
🧐Lemme check... I have one in my pantry bought yesterday... edit: nope, ours are still 250g packages 🤔 and it seems the two packages here are not the same thing. One has the biscuit inside in a row, the other one has each biscuit seperatly packaged. We need to compare same things not two different versions.
Yeah I used to stock cookies and I know that biscoff came out with a snack pack, which is the bottom in the pic. Perhaps the poster's grocery store has decided not to carry the non-snack pack variety, so they ended up with this?

Load More Replies...This entire article is depressing. Prices of EVERYTHING are going up (fuel, rent, groceries) and wages aren't budging. Corporations are no longer hiding their greed and people are being crushed.
The problem with using the term "shrinkflation" is that it sounds like a kind of economic phenomenon that we have no control over, so people will "normalize" it in their minds as something that can't be helped. The real term we need to use is "GREED". Because that's exactly what this is.
Remember: The GOP says we can't raise the minimum wage, because if we do it will cause the prices of things to go up. But here we are, prices have been going up but our wages haven't been raised to even keep up with it. It's like the boiling frog metaphor, but we're slowly being made into a poorer, lower class
You realize Democrats are in the pockets of corporations too, right? They can give all the lip service they want because they know they'll never have to follow through. Stop pretending any politician cares about you.
