If you want something done right, hire a professional. Otherwise, you might end up like the people who everyone is talking about in this Facebook group that’s all about questionable architectural decisions.

You Should Have Hired an Architect brings together people to discuss some of the more ridiculous manifestations of architecture caused by a clear absence of a professional.

And if any of this sounds familiar, it’s because it should as Bored Panda has featured this group not once, but twice.

This is most definitely not an architectural fail. It's a roaring success from an architect. It's fun, colourful and exciting. It's a different flavour of modern architecture, but at the same time screams its Amsterdam heritage.

We don't have houses like this. There is one in Zaandam by architect Wilfried van Winden, https://www.inntelhotelsamsterdamzaandam.nl/, which uses various shades of the for the region typcial green color and one blue house. The blue is referring to a painting from Monet.

This is in the US where there are floods and hurricanes. Raising the house above the flood stage is required by states and counties in order to receive permission to build in that area. The entire ground level is unoccupied so it can flood without damage to the main house. Looks like they are expecting very high flood waters because of the height. The little windows are likely over a tub or shower to provide light and maintain privacy in the primary bedroom. There is also likely a walk in closet next to the bathroom which does not need windows (to the left of the little trio of windows).

McKenzie elaborated that architects bring a lot to the project. It’s not just about making a house beautiful and functional—it’s also about making sure it fits into its environment in a sustainable way.

This is besides them making sure you don’t dig yourself into a deep, deep hole of building standard and code violations.

And while you can risk it and skip out on hiring an architect—there are cases when personal houses turned out to be just fine—the group has ample examples of why it’s probably not worth the risk.

After all, there is a reason why architects go through years of studies and pass rigorous exams to be able to do what they do in a safe and sustainable manner. Having played the Sims throughout high school, however, does not count.

It looks like somebody watched a 1990s DIY decorating show that taught how to do sponge painting and used a square kitchen sponge instead of the kind of sponge you use for sponge painting, but also didn't have a good eye for color choices.

I don't know about that. I had a friend that bought their laminate flooring from a big box store and they had them install it for them. The installer insisted that this pattern is how it was supposed to be laid. They called me when the installer told them that they didn't buy enough flooring and said they needed another 500 square feet. Every drop from each board that was cut was laying in a pile in the front yard and it was about a quarter of the material that was originally purchased. When they questioned how he installed it, he told them they needed to get off of YouTube and he was the professional. I have seen people install flooring like this a few times and every time it was an uneducated installer that thought this was the correct way to install the flooring.

In the most general sense of the concept, architects make problems go away.

For every want and need that you might have with a house comes a non-zero chance of a problem arising. Even more so when you need to translate your vision onto a three-dimensional space measured extremely precisely—and you bet that every nano-measurement counts.

An architect might cost you in the beginning, but you will surely end up saving money in the long run. Architects make sure each project is done in the most efficient and economically reasonable way. And it’s not just the early stages of a building that are set—they also future-proof projects by coordinating materials and layouts in the plan in a way that it would last long and would actually be something you could sell in the future if the need arises.

It is a brilliant design, but not for Canada. One of the big benefits of apartment buildings is the apartments either side, top and bottom give thermal insulation, from the cold, and a lesser extent the heat. Some of these rooms will be far, far colder than they would have been if they had been built in a conventional way. In warmer countries, this design would work.

If anything, hiring an architect is just the easier thing to do. Sure, it’ll cost you more, but how much is your peace of mind worth?

It doesn’t take a cost-benefit analysis to know that if you’re trying to draft up a plan all the while working and living your life, plus all of the other engineering and design services that you might want to throw in there and coordinating and administrating absolutely everything—it’s always worth it.

If this isn't just in there while it's actual room gets re-finished, imagine the sharticles on all those keys... Also bathroom carpet makes the entire house permanently incorrect.

And besides the architect, there’s a slew of other things to worry about too—your plan has to have the right amount of detail (including structural engineering drawings, survey plans and utilities logistics), having your finances properly sorted so that there's a budget to begin with, selecting the right builder, doing your research and all that jazz.

My previous house was built in 1940. It had a door in the kitchen - the door opened to the left, against a wall. You went down 4 steps to a 3x3 landing; to the right the stairs continued to the basement; forward was a glass storm door that opened outwards into the garage. I lived there 15y with no problems with this design. When I sold it, code said there must be a regular door into the garage (fire door). The realtor hired someone to replace the glass storm door with a fireproof door. It was the stupidest thing I ever saw. They had the fire door open inwards to the right (the solid wall), and open to the basement stairs. So to get in the house, you opened that door, stepped down a couple basement steps, closed the door, step back up to the landing, open the kitchen door, and go up the 4 steps to the kitchen. (You couldn't open the kitchen and garage door at the same time or they blocked the landing.) If it was dark and you weren't careful, you'd fall down the basement stairs.

I've been in a lot of houses with essentially this same setup. It's always because the room to the right has been made out of an attic. There is literally no other way to get access because of the roof slopes, but it's terrifying for someone like me with serious balance problems.

Needless to say, it helps to get all the help you can get. Otherwise, you might end up with a door in the middle of your staircase… or a staircase that doubles as a Home Alone trap… or a house that’s out to get you because of all the architectural nonsense you’ve let yourself get carried away with.

Yeah, I have this problem. The glas panel in my door broke, so I wanted to just get a new door because that's cheaper than replacing the glass panel. But my door apparently isn't a standard size, so I can't just buy a new door, I would need to have it custom made which is hella expensive. I ended up just replacing the glass panel with a wooden panel and painted it in a cool way.

I actually saw one place with a bath very much like this when we were house-hunting 20-odd years ago. The bath wasn't quite totally circular and had a 'head' area with gold lamé cushions built in.

Yes, pool access is the one reason it is ok to have an exterior door in the bathroom, but it still can not be the main entrance to the house.

I'm 20, and if there were a briefcase with a million dollars up there, I'd grasp the doorframe on the left, put my left foot on the railing, stand up on the railing balancing on that one foot, and gradually swing my right foot around and onto the platform. Then I'd lean on that foot and in that direction, grasp the desk, and move in. Otherwise, I'm not going up there.

Here's the kicker: the architect honestly thought he was bringing the Piazza San Marco to Boston. Instead, he created a stark, brutal building with a windswept plaza that was inviting to no-one. We would have preferred to have kept Scollay Square to this '60s "renovation" into Government Center.

It is a reno, it was slated to be torn down when a guy who has a penchant for saving old properties bought it. It's apartments now. I remember seeing that hulk way back when my grandparents lived in the Cass Corridor.

They probably live in a flood zone, houses have to be on stilts to be insured if that's the case. The ground floor is made with panels that will blow out if water rushes through to save the rest of the house. Downstairs is probably like a raised basement because the water table is too high there. Yes its ugly, but it serves a purpose.

A lot of places around the world incorporate the toilet and shower in the same small room, so that's not too unusual in itself. The size is too restrictive though.

Start out "all white and spacious and clean looking" (aka as inviting as a surgery) and add some "authentic rustic touch". Works out as fine as an ice cube sandwich with sawdust: unappetizing and unappealing on several levels.

Oh man, Stefan Tuchila, now that's a name I haven't heard in a while - we were the same class at Mincu and we both visited this church in our 5-th year school trip to Oltenia back in the early 2000s. XD

They wanted a wall instead of a door there, but made it so that their decision can be easily reversed. A smart move in an old house if you ask me. Could also be conserved, so you are not allowed to make permanent changes to the layout or structure.

Have this thing here, I guess they needed a wall more, than three doors to a room?

The door hardware and placement beautifully date when this was installed. I'd love to know what is behind door number one. And the hole drilled in the doorframe. Enquiring minds want to know.

A friend bought a 100+ year old adobe in New Mexico, USA. They wanted to close off the door of a room and move it to a different wall so the layout would work better. They discovered an old walled-off door similar to this right where they were going to move it to. Idr the circumstances of the others but I think they found three walled-in doors total. One reason for buried doors is that people often built one room that was their entire house, then added rooms one at a time as they were able. Sometimes rooms' roles would change when this happened. In my friend's house it looks like three different rooms took a turn containing the front door, including the current one.

A friend of mine worked in agriculture and as a methane gas "experiment," he put pig feces in some pickle jars to see what would happen. They exploded all over the bathroom. He walled it over and pretended it never happened. One less half bath.

It happened in Egypt. Apparently, not that uncommon, either. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4566618/Building-topples-comes-rest-skyscraper.html
