We all have an inner Marie Kondo hiding somewhere deep under the piles of laundry and overstacked dishes. As the plates from my takeaway dinner still patiently wait in the sink, I realize we all need some inspiration.

And where’s a better place to look for it than to see some real-life examples from people who have their organizational skills up and running like a nuclear power plant?

Get ready to browse through the soothing images of perfectly ordered pantries and shelves, through meticulous layouts and wonderfully neat rooms, and wardrobes, and storage boxes... and indulge in the calming effect of absolute order. These people do indeed make it look like transforming cluttered homes into spaces of serenity and inspiration is like a walk in the park, and I am up for it.

Fill it completely with those bins now, plus a spare or two, while you can still get the same ones. If those get discontinued, different ones might not quite fit the same way.

I'd say both. If your anything like my mom, the xmas decor covers like six bins- not counting the lights. (the moose and bear that goes on their front porch are their own bin, for example.)

I'm contemplating something similar, as the thing you want is always in the bottom container, despite organizing them so that the top ones contain the most frequently used items.

There are two types of people—the ones that do everything they can to delay cleaning up their home up to the very end until they see a tumbleweed of dust heading from one corner to the opposite corner of the room, and another type of people who were born (or passionately learnt) loving organizing their space, and there’s just so much we can all learn from the latter.

So in order to find out how to take your first steps into the organized world and lifestyle that sparks joy, and leave all the chaos behind, Bored Panda reached out to Alice Bauer, a Konmari™ premium consultant who works in Switzerland and Austria.

“The best motivation to start is to envision yourself with your ideal lifestyle,” Alice stated. You may want to ask yourself: “How do you want to live? Picture this as precisely as possible with every detail. What kind of atmosphere should your home have? What do you want to see first when you wake up in the morning? What is your morning routine? What do you do for fun? Do you love to cook and like to cook for your friends in the future? How must your home be to support you best on a daily basis?”

This self-reflection is the beginning of radical tidying up, which is a lifestyle change, according to Alice. “Create a vision board and add adjectives to amplify how your ideal lifestyle should feel. Warm, light, open, or welcoming, cozy. I love to work with vision boards together with my clients so that they can come back to their vision whenever they feel like it.”

But Alice warns that tidying is a demanding process where you constantly make decisions about what to keep. “There are good days and you feel absolutely great, your self-esteem is high and you go smoothly with the flow; on the other hand, there are difficult days when you cannot motivate yourself properly and your goal is far away,” she explained.

“Then the magic of the vision board comes to play and reminds you exactly why you’re tidying. You want to change your life—somehow,” she added.

Being able to do that depends on the condition of the concrete. My garage floor has an oily spot from 60 years of drips in the same place, I've tried and tried to clean it, but water still beads there. An epoxy coating would just fall off.

Paint miniature figurines for Dungeons and Dragons, Warhammer, and more! The board with the measurement numbers on it is probably used for making custom terrain, and the spotlight and goggles are to help see all the tiny details. The bottles are specialized paint made specifically for this hobby that tend to be higher quality than most acrylic paint (it's smoother, thicker, and more pigmented usually). There's also items like the yellow-filled jar that can be used to make textures (the yellow stuff might be used to imitate sand or something), and there's a bunch of painbrushes and grasping tools to hold up the mini so you can paint certain details without your fingers getting in the way.

Alice’s trick is to try and tidy up by category instead of location. “The majority of my clients all used to tidy by location, which in my opinion is nonsense. Instead, tidy by category so that you can get an overview of how many pairs of scissors you actually own. You cannot get how many you have if they are scattered all over the house.”

Moreover, when tidying up, you have to stay patient. First, you decide what to discard, and only after, you work with the items you’re left with. “After completing the sorting of all categories, you think about storing what you are left with. Not earlier. That will teach you how to be patient and patience is exactly what you need to finish the process.”

I'm curious what the boxes are on the wall holding paints. I paint and have soooo many paints of various size bottles and they're all mashed into a cabinet. It'd be wonderful to have something flat to put them on to see the colors. This must be so nice to sit down and work at! Lotta work...great job!

If you’re on a lower budget, Alice recommends selling things you don’t want anymore on eBay, Etsy, or whatever is available in your location. “But pay attention. You will never sell everything you have planned to sell. I would suggest that you pick out a number of items to seriously sell. Reselling is time-consuming and needs effort. Good pictures need to be taken, a text has to be written, posting, answering inquiries. Think about this aspect carefully.”

“Until an item is sold, it is still lying in your house probably for weeks or months until you cannot see it anymore and just donate it,” Alice said and added that essentially, “someday never comes. Trust me, I know.”

The first bin would send my kid into an ASD “breakdown” unless I let them organize it. We don’t go to Walmart, dollar tree (laws god help me if we go in there) and several other stores bc they can’t handle the mess. I understand this picture all too well. My kid has the cleanest minimalist room and the Feng Shui in it is amazing. I would have my child no other way. 💙

Bored Panda also talked to Amanda Scanlan, a certified platinum KonMari® consultant based in Brisbane, Australia. If you’re wanting to tidy up and organize things but are lacking motivation, Amanda said that a great place to start is to figure out your why. Ask yourself: “Why do you want to tidy up? Will it make your life easier and happier? This invites you to imagine how you truly wish to live your life. You may like to consider what an ideal day or week looks like for you—What are you doing? How do you feel? Who is with you? What is the quality of that relationship and connection?”

“Connecting with this vision and really feeling into what it is like to live in your tidy home is not only important to find the motivation to start, but will also be a motivator to help you complete your tidying up thoroughly so you can put your reclaimed money, time and energy into living that life,” she explained.

Heavy stuff needs to be lower. Chopping boards need to be off the floor. I have my chopping boards colour organised for what I am about to chop. White fish, Yellow chicken, Red for Meats and obviously green for fruit and veg. Plus none of them are wooden as you cannot dishwasher proof a wooden board.

Aside from this, Amanda suggests thinking of joining a Facebook group, tidy challenge, or engaging a Consultant or buddying up with a friend to share your goals. Sometimes a little push from the others is all we need.

Amanda also said that tidying your home does not need to be an expensive undertaking, “it’s not about Instagram-worthy storage solutions.” Instead, “Tidying up can simply be a process to understand better what energizes and sparks joy in you, and then finding a home for all the items you have chosen to keep in your life.”

“This can be achieved through using items you already have—shoe boxes can be repurposed and used as drawer dividers for storing clothes or keeping like items together; phone or tablet boxes are great for keeping smaller items together like batteries or pens; large glass jars are great for storing food or dishwashing tablets.”

According to the KonMari consultant, you may even find that you have storage items already that are no longer needed, “such as repurposing a letter organizer as a device charging station or magazine holder to store your papers that need actioning.”

However, if you do need to buy storage items, Amanda recommends holding off until you have finished discarding, since this way you are only finding solutions for the things you truly wish to keep in your life. “Another benefit of holding off is that working through your tidying journey starts to free up mental space; this can result in becoming more creative and resourceful with using what you already have to meet your needs,” she explained.

Ditto with us. We have shelves around our TV and every time I clean one out and make it pretty, hubs picks random stuff off the floor and shoves it in the space. Moves picture frames to the side and everything. And no, I don't know where anything is. I'm about ready to just purge everything and repurchase as needed 😵

1 inch nylon camping straps (you can buy it in any camping supply store, or amazicrap) and some sort of heavy nylon fabric for backing. this looks like cheap zipties for the straps- I would recommend sewing it. If you don't have a machine that can handle the tough fabric, use a saddle stitch with very light cordage (or very heavy thread.)(where you pull/push a loop through, run the top side thread through the loop and pull the loop back down and tight. You can cheese it with a crochet hook, but it's a lot more work than a proper awl.)

I usually cook two or three meals a day and have half the spices but still have seasonings to throw out due to age. I was wondering if they would ever use all that. Nice selection though.

The white-cuppy things were printed on a FDM printer. they melt plastic out a nozzle and build parts layer by layer. Here's a timelapse of it going. (the thing to the right is the print head, which has the nozzle and it moves along. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzbAdpbjOlI

I find them pretty addictive. but unless you're already in a hobby that you could use printed parts for... I wouldn't recommend one. They're a pretty large timesink to get set up and tuned just right, so if you just want a single thing... well, yeah. Also, if you're looking for fun stuff to print, check out cults3d.com or thingiverse.com

Is there a difference between spices and herbs? In my mind, all herbs are spices, but not all spices are herbs. Now I'm wondering if that's true.

This is actually really impractical. To put away clean clothes you need to empty each pocket every time so the item goes at the bottom of the pile. If you don’t do that then the clothes aren’t rotated and things are worn over and over again.

This is perfect. Babies grow so fast here is no time to match outfits or rotate wardrobes. The only thing I don't see here is a pocket to put items baby has grown out of.

Not impractical at all! Such a great idea if you're limited on space. Would easily get through a pouch of clothes for a baby in a day! Also, a baby wearing the same thing over and over again doesn't matter.

The lazy susans on the top shelf are such a great idea. No standing on a step ladder, gingerly trying to reach over something or moving everything out of the way to get at something else behind it, or forgetting you have something already and buying more because it’s out of sight in the back of the top shelf.

You have to do a lot of work to paint the tubular plastic hangers - you would have to use sandpaper to rough up the surface, plus make sure to use paint specifically made for plastic, otherwise the paint won't stick & will peel & flake off.

But I need to remember this for when we move into our actual house at the end of the year! I also like those little clips, that look like the top of a fizzy drinks can. So you can double-up hangers to save space.

As long as it’s in good shape, I see no point in throwing clothing out. When I was young and broke, I used to go to a second hand clothing store run by the Junior League. Bought some nice work and date clothes there, and for pennies. Now that I’m better off, though I do still pick up some stuff secondhand (especially vintage), I also donate clothes I don’t wear anymore, or don’t suit me, or no longer fit—-but not if they’re worn out (those either have what’s still good salvaged and reworked into other outfits, then migrate to the rag bin).

The most difficult part of something like this is that every shelf must be measured and cut individually since walls are rarely framed perfectly straight. As a first-effort, this is perfectly serviceable. There is no reason that a tight glued-and-nailed butt joint can't last for generations.

Especially in older houses—-I swear each door and window in our older house was measured by eye instead of yardstick or tape measure! We had the windows replaced, and after the openings were measured, turned out none of them were a standard size, so they had to be custom made. Good thing we were able to afford good replacement windows. I don’t want to go through that again for a long while.

I have several pairs but not this many. My son's girlfriend was wearing shoes with a hole and we found out that they were the only ones she had then I see something like this and it makes me want to cry over the waste. (We gave our son our credit card and had him take her to get two new pairs. One tennis shoe and one nicer shoe. That's all you really need.)

What sorcery is this?? Seriously, I am incapable of following instructions to fold/build stuff. Origami is my worst nightmare, cannot compute what they have on paper with what’s actually in front of me. To put stuff together I just have to look at the pieces and try to figure it out. Also applies to things like workout videos or yoga or physical therapy exercises, and dancing too. can’t seem to work out how to copy what the person is doing. Is there a word for that? Very difficult to explain but have always struggled with that!

I roll my old shopping bags up so that I can pull just one from the middle and the handles for the next one come out of the center, similar to the trash bags we buy at the store. Beats having lose bags everywhere, and also doesn't require a fancy flag fold. Won't be having to do it much longer since my state is outlawing the plastic shopping bag next month.

I just use a hand made hanging plastic bag holder I bought at a charity flea market for the local no-kill animal shelter about 20 years ago. Just a cotton tube—-thick and durable cotton—-with elasticized openings on top and bottom, and a handle to hang it attached on one end. You just stuff the bags into the top, then pull them out from the bottom. The elastic holds them in. Takes way less time than folding (and unfolding) each bag like it’s the American flag.

The amount of clothes I buy is waaaay below the average... I always wondered where the people are who pull the average up that far. I mean, I still have enough to cover all the different seasons and occasions and still have some choice in all cases. Surely most of the ones in the picture will just never be worn...?

My mother has multiple closets in multiple bedrooms and hallways - STUFFED full of clothing. One whole closet is devoted to coats/outerwear, one is dedicated to summer stuff, one is dedicated to shoes, etc. She retired last year and had a yard sale. She put out 6 (actually from a retail store) department store clothing racks of clothes in her yard sale. I couldn't tell where the clothing had actually come from in the house. I took home a car trunkful and still, I couldn't tell I'd taken much from her "summer" closet. Some people collect trinkets, some people collect clothes.

The only thing I do not like about this kind of closet organizer is that it’s great for shirts, skirts, and pants if you drape them over hangers instead of hang them, but it’s absolute hell for dresses and coats, and the aforementioned pants hung by the waistband. Hope there’s space left for longer items that isn’t in the picture.

Let me hear from other readers who initially wondered why they need a Reno, NV overflow room, then realized it’s a Renovation overflow room! Is it only an American thing? (BTW, my parents retired to NV from SoCal. Initially to Vegas, then to Carson City. To visit them I had to fly into Reno, so I guess that’s my reasoning for it.)

I thought the same thing at first, then saw the building supplies! I use the word 'reno' as a shortened version of renovation, but I don't capitalize it. To me, Reno will always be the city in Nevada (my mom had 2 aunts who lived in Reno).

Carrots don't really need a fridge. I keep mine in a net bag next to the tomatoes squash, potatoes, courgettes, cucumber onions. All in fine mesh bags and they last for ages. Tomatoes taste wonderful if kept at room temperature.

The shelf life of dried/ground spices, while taste may deteriorate a bit, can be pretty lengthy. But some people buy in bulk and just keep the smaller jars to use daily and then refill.

As much as I love seeing these kind of posts where books are stored by colour, practically I’d find this very irritating. Personally, I prefer to organise by genre and then author, like you’d find in a bookshop or library. That way I always know where to look depending on what kind of mood i’m in or what type of book I fancy reading at that time. BUT this is still very pretty and I can appreciate the effort it took to organise this (: 📚❤️

I’m guessing you have pets, judging by the big bottle of enzymes. Me too. Last year (2020) it was a new kitten (abandoned alone in our yard at 5-6 weeks old, so a couple weeks of accidents before she was old enough to have muscle control and hold it until she got to the litterbox), this year (2021) the dog is starting to get old (we think he’s developing doggy dementia) and a bit incontinent, so a couple accidents. Just bought doggie diapers for the future because, unlike a kitten, and old dog will have inevitably more accidents, not fewer.
