Anyone who's ever worked in the food service industry is bound to have met one of these—an extremely rude customer who shouldn't be allowed back into the restaurant. Or to order food ever again! The sad part is, rude customers aren't even that rare.
They're pretty darn common and make the lives of waiters, restaurant employees, and baristas a waking nightmare. Bored Panda wanted to show you some of the things service industry personnel have been through with rude customers, so we collected some of the best posts by servers from all over the net. Alexander Kjerulf, the founder and Chief Happiness Officer of ‘Woohoo inc.' told Bored Panda that if your workplace is causing you to forget that you're a human being who's worthy of care and humane treatment, you shouldn't work there anymore. "Quit, and find a better place to work, where they actually care about their staff," he told Bored Panda. "And quit sooner rather than later. The longer you stay, the more they will grind you down until you lose all the energy and optimism you need to move on and find a better job."

Alexander was upfront that employees should expect and demand support from their managers. "I know that it's common for restaurants to treat their customers like kings and their employees [badly], but that doesn't mean it's OK," he said.
"99% of people are nice, but the occasional rude client is unavoidable," Alexander from 'Woohoo inc.' said that there's no avoiding rudeness in the long run. "You can learn tricks to deal with them, and that's great, but no one should have to put up with mistreatment."
For Alexander, working in the service industry doesn't mean that others can walk all over you. "Having a service job does not mean that other people get to demean you or belittle you and managers must be willing to step in and protect employees' dignity and mental health."

I'll be frank. The US tipping system… is a bit weird. It's on the same plane of existence as not posting the full price of a meal or a product with the tax included. However weird forced tipping might be (and how it essentially makes customers, not the employers, pay a large chunk of the workers' wages), it doesn't change the fact that it's a cultural thing in the States. You just do it.

“That customer doesn't even know you, so there's no way it could be you. But on the other hand, don't be subservient. Don't be afraid to stand up for yourself and tell customers that abuse is not tolerated. And if it persists, hand them over to a manager as soon as you can and let them deal with it,” Alexander explained how we should deal with problematic people. It's all about striking a balance between being professional and having a spine.
However, Alexander pointed out that not all customers who behave badly are bad people in and of themselves. There's a bit of nuance there! “It can be a good person having a bad day and that's why they're acting out.”

What baffles me is the restaurant service system we use. Why cant restaurants just pay servers a living wage? Why should customers have to pay for the food AND the service. Every other industry pays their employees a fair living wage for their work. Why isn't food service the same way? The system is backward and broken and desperately needs to be fixed.

I've never been to any country other than the US where a tipping is seen an obligation because wages are too bad to live on. Serving is part of the service so it should be included in the price of food like it is in other developed countries. It's almost as bad as the tax not being included in the prices.

I wanna know why everyone seems to think that every serving job is terrible, that servers make no money and are forced to be servers. I've been serving/ bartending for about half my life and at my current job, where I've worked for 9 years (willfully), I make more money and have more fun at work than most people I know

Sadly, Steve, the waitstaff will have to just suck it up and continue to serve them--their job depends upon it. Should they be perceived as having a bad attitude this a-hole will probably report the server to management and could cost the server their job. Very sad.

I would really like this person to serve for a day and get that one table that has a $300 bill but either doesn’t tip you or tips you like $5. All the work you just did, running back and forth, all for less than minimum wage 👍🏻 People don’t actually pay attention to the fact that servers only make like $4-6 an hour because of the tipping system...sooo you don’t tip us we are only making an average of $5 to take care of your table ....so because you decide that we are just asking for handouts we can’t make a living. Last time I checked asking for handouts was doing nothing and expecting something in return....if they think their server really did nothing, they really shouldn’t be allowed to eat out anymore.

Many restaurants only give their wait staff a base pay of $1 or $2, which means they DEPEND on tips! It's how they keep prices lower so people can eat out. Idiots like this complain about the cost of McDonald's, whose servers don't get tipped, but act like trash when they go to a decent restaurant whose staff relies on tips to make a living. McDonald's is the bottom of the barrel: tip restaurants are better and have their own hierarchy. These folks obviously belong at the bottom, and should stay with their own kind.

The thing is if owners paid living wage to all employee's do you not realize how much the price would go up? It's not cheap to run a restaurant. And I agree if wait staff got "better jobs" who would serve your ass? It's like the church rush on sundays that look down on the heathen working on sabbath- um someone has to be there to meet the needs of holier than though church goers who are "Judging" the heathens.

Maybe the owners should raise the price of the food (or shrink the portions) and pay the wait staff a decent wage and not leave it up to the customer to pay their servers. What's more, Alexander added that rather than thinking that the customer is always right, we should go for something more down-to-earth like “be nice.” Or at least avoiding being rude. Of course, this goes for customers and employees alike! “Whenever I'm a customer anywhere, I always try to be kind and positive to the staff—even when occasionally I have to complain about something. It's literally the least I can do.”

The tipping culture in the states is so messed up, not only because its completely unethical for places to pay so little that they rely on tips so heavily, but it gives douchebags a platform to try and belittle and offend others to boost their own misguided ego

Correct. The customer chooses whether they want to pay for something they already received. The system is based entirely on the ethics of semi-anonymous individuals, and places the risk purely on the employee, not the business.

Indeed. It CAN be proliferous, whilst establishing YOUR own clientele/customer base, however. Thirty years, and it got me my PhD. I've been SO out of the 'serving' industry for the last 10 years, thank the Heavens!! (Or whatever/whomever you believe in!!)

Rude customers are everywhere, but being angry at customers who don't tip is really just an American issue. If tipping is optional, then the waiters have no grounds to complain if someone doesn't tip. If tipping is compulsory, then add 20% onto all prices, and tell customers that is the price they must pay. I would never want to pay more money than I have to for something. If a meal costs $10, then why pay $12? American restaurants should just scrap tipping, and pay workers a living wage.

There was a woman in my area who realised her dream by opening a lovely little cake shop and cafeteria down by the lakeside in a prime position. She envisioned it as a nice place where young mothers could meet up for a chat over coffee and cupcakes. What actually happened instead was that mothers did indeed show up... with pre-packed food for their kids rather than buying anything and left crusts and other scraps all over the place, used the cafe tables to change nappies and left the soiled remains behind, and let their toddlers run around trashing the joint to their heart's content, over the protests of the poor harassed cafe staff. The place ended up being shut down in a matter of months, and never reopened. This is why we can't have nice things.

Some people are absolute trash. I feel bad for that woman. I worked in retail for many years and there were a few times a parent left their baby’s dirty diaper on a stack of clean folded clothes and a ton who let their kids run wild around the store destroying the tables and climbing on them.

Pay people a wage they can live on. Tips SHOULD be optional. Then they'd be. And still, even in countries with a sufficient minimum wage, people regularly tip. Decent people at least - I'd be ashamed if I didn't at least roughly 10%. Also applies to things like Delivery Hero, they exploit their drivers - tip them in cash. I do every time, usually silent, because the driver's app has access to the microphone, which may also raise some legal questions...

Most of these come from a cultural issue that's becoming a problem. The fact that you are expected to make up for the waiter's salary is ridiculous. Tips are optional in most countries. Also, the fact that clients are entitled, rude and just plain uneducated is a direct consequence of that "customer is always right" crap. As someone who has worked in the service industry for years, at least where I live, there are rules. Basic guidelines for proper behavior. For staff and for customers, and it's rather common for people to get banned if they cause too much trouble or leave a mess. And... I won't get into the pandemic protocols, but really, wtf is with them being "optional"? Even in less developed countries, pandemic guidelines are for everyone, and if you don't comply, you get a fine, at the least.

I always tip a minimum 20% but usually more than that. But if you never smile, never come back to the table after you bring the food, never refill you won't get 20%. I always leave something but that something is always up to the waitress/waiter. Since I understand I try never to be mean or hateful.

Dear Americans. In Europe waiters are tipped for good service. They have basic salary. Holiday and sick leave entitlement. Work ethics. You have capitalism. If I would ever go to US, I don't think I would tip anyone. Pay people in catering and hospitality decent wages, they feed you!

I never understood tipping. Especially when it's seen as a must. You never tip any service worker, you dont give tips to bus drivers, teachers, shop assistants, doctors or anyone except waiters, really. I do get it that the wage is not great but in the end its their choice to work there and if their wage is not enough and they must rely on begging for tips, they can always leave. I usually do tip when the service is especially good, but I hate it when the waiters automatically assume Im gonna give them a tip.

I am curious. Is it illegal for restaurants to include a X% service charge to the bill for their staff? This is what a lot of Asian countries do. The staff earn their hourly or daily rate on top of the prorated service fee at the end of the month.

Well usually I don't have a problem with tipping if the server is not racist or has an attitude. However, I never leave without leaving a tip which would not be larger than 10% of my bill. If I am leaving the premises happy I will even tip 50% of my bill. Also I think the tipping system is f*****g ridiculous cause the servers have to rely on it

I am a person that will tip higher than normal when the service is outstanding. I have also left a smaller tip for very rude,disrespectful servers. These people that leave very horrible notes on tabs are just miserable people and don't let that deter you of your work. Just do the best you can and u will be rewarded someday. I am still waiting for that special server one day and they will get a OMG tip from me!

I was a bartender for years and I rarely had a bad tipper. After a while you can tell before the people even sit down what kind of tip they'll leave or if they'll give you a hard time. I was rarely surprised or wrong. I think it's the air of arrogance that surrounds the entitled ones. In my experience the bikers were the best tippers and the rich people were the worst. I worked at a sports bar the same time I worked at a high end martini bar and I always always always made a ton more money at the sports bars.

I get what you’re saying but I don’t know if that would work since tipping is optional. If they left that fake money to pay for their meal total then yes they could get in trouble for that. Not tipping a server is pretty shitty I agree and these people are all assholes.

Extraordinarily rude behavior needs to be called out. It would help improve the behavior of these buffoons or encourage them to eat at home where they belong. It's simple, if you can't afford to leave a decent tip, then stay home or buy fast food. Also, a worldwide "Manners Matter" campaign would help us all.

You have to remember, while reading these, that these views are ONLY from the wait staff side. Anyone thats been to fast food places or restaurants to eat, knows there are PLENTY of wait staff that are bastards and jackasses! I've had plenty of them fired too, for being the douchebags they are!!! Just take into account...........did the wait person deserve it?

The tipping culture in the states is so messed up, not only because its completely unethical for places to pay so little that they rely on tips so heavily, but it gives douchebags a platform to try and belittle and offend others to boost their own misguided ego

Correct. The customer chooses whether they want to pay for something they already received. The system is based entirely on the ethics of semi-anonymous individuals, and places the risk purely on the employee, not the business.

Indeed. It CAN be proliferous, whilst establishing YOUR own clientele/customer base, however. Thirty years, and it got me my PhD. I've been SO out of the 'serving' industry for the last 10 years, thank the Heavens!! (Or whatever/whomever you believe in!!)

Rude customers are everywhere, but being angry at customers who don't tip is really just an American issue. If tipping is optional, then the waiters have no grounds to complain if someone doesn't tip. If tipping is compulsory, then add 20% onto all prices, and tell customers that is the price they must pay. I would never want to pay more money than I have to for something. If a meal costs $10, then why pay $12? American restaurants should just scrap tipping, and pay workers a living wage.

There was a woman in my area who realised her dream by opening a lovely little cake shop and cafeteria down by the lakeside in a prime position. She envisioned it as a nice place where young mothers could meet up for a chat over coffee and cupcakes. What actually happened instead was that mothers did indeed show up... with pre-packed food for their kids rather than buying anything and left crusts and other scraps all over the place, used the cafe tables to change nappies and left the soiled remains behind, and let their toddlers run around trashing the joint to their heart's content, over the protests of the poor harassed cafe staff. The place ended up being shut down in a matter of months, and never reopened. This is why we can't have nice things.

Pay people a wage they can live on. Tips SHOULD be optional. Then they'd be. And still, even in countries with a sufficient minimum wage, people regularly tip. Decent people at least - I'd be ashamed if I didn't at least roughly 10%. Also applies to things like Delivery Hero, they exploit their drivers - tip them in cash. I do every time, usually silent, because the driver's app has access to the microphone, which may also raise some legal questions...

Most of these come from a cultural issue that's becoming a problem. The fact that you are expected to make up for the waiter's salary is ridiculous. Tips are optional in most countries. Also, the fact that clients are entitled, rude and just plain uneducated is a direct consequence of that "customer is always right" crap. As someone who has worked in the service industry for years, at least where I live, there are rules. Basic guidelines for proper behavior. For staff and for customers, and it's rather common for people to get banned if they cause too much trouble or leave a mess. And... I won't get into the pandemic protocols, but really, wtf is with them being "optional"? Even in less developed countries, pandemic guidelines are for everyone, and if you don't comply, you get a fine, at the least.

I always tip a minimum 20% but usually more than that. But if you never smile, never come back to the table after you bring the food, never refill you won't get 20%. I always leave something but that something is always up to the waitress/waiter. Since I understand I try never to be mean or hateful.

Dear Americans. In Europe waiters are tipped for good service. They have basic salary. Holiday and sick leave entitlement. Work ethics. You have capitalism. If I would ever go to US, I don't think I would tip anyone. Pay people in catering and hospitality decent wages, they feed you!

I never understood tipping. Especially when it's seen as a must. You never tip any service worker, you dont give tips to bus drivers, teachers, shop assistants, doctors or anyone except waiters, really. I do get it that the wage is not great but in the end its their choice to work there and if their wage is not enough and they must rely on begging for tips, they can always leave. I usually do tip when the service is especially good, but I hate it when the waiters automatically assume Im gonna give them a tip.

I am curious. Is it illegal for restaurants to include a X% service charge to the bill for their staff? This is what a lot of Asian countries do. The staff earn their hourly or daily rate on top of the prorated service fee at the end of the month.

Well usually I don't have a problem with tipping if the server is not racist or has an attitude. However, I never leave without leaving a tip which would not be larger than 10% of my bill. If I am leaving the premises happy I will even tip 50% of my bill. Also I think the tipping system is f*****g ridiculous cause the servers have to rely on it

I am a person that will tip higher than normal when the service is outstanding. I have also left a smaller tip for very rude,disrespectful servers. These people that leave very horrible notes on tabs are just miserable people and don't let that deter you of your work. Just do the best you can and u will be rewarded someday. I am still waiting for that special server one day and they will get a OMG tip from me!

I was a bartender for years and I rarely had a bad tipper. After a while you can tell before the people even sit down what kind of tip they'll leave or if they'll give you a hard time. I was rarely surprised or wrong. I think it's the air of arrogance that surrounds the entitled ones. In my experience the bikers were the best tippers and the rich people were the worst. I worked at a sports bar the same time I worked at a high end martini bar and I always always always made a ton more money at the sports bars.
