Could be second floor of a garage or a house with a heavily pitched roof.

Wow... I wonder how much it was to run the plumbing all the way into the attic? Definitely a professional job!

Good point! A lot of people might not consider how the plumbing up there has to connect with the plumbing below. It would have been so much easier to make this room into an office, or a little library room, but it came out soooo good, didn't it?

This kind of huge mirror makes me unconfortable in a bathroom, yet, with the wall you removed, it brings much more light and the room seems so much bigger

I put a huge mirror in my bathroom. It gives me the sense that I the room is twice as big. On the downside, it also gives me the sense that there is a middle-aged schmendrik hanging around in my bathroom every time I go in there.

Wondering if this is a covered patio? How do you keep the carpet dry and from mildewing? We have a huge covered deck on our home, and it's 12 feet wide and covered and still the water splashes onto our rug and it gets wet. We live in FL, so it rains nearly every afternoon here. I am constantly hanging rugs over the railing to get them dry---very tacky, but what else can I do? Maybe do without the rugs?!! They are indoor/outdoor and still get messed up. Love your new patio a lot!

I am just the person to tell you. I live full time year round in one. A fifth wheel is an an RV travel trailer used for traveling and camping. It has an overhang in the front that goes over the back of a pickup truck. This one looks like it will not be used for travel, but lived in. My trailer looks more like the before pic. They are much bigger inside than you would expect ( like the Tardis- Lol).

There are some discrepancies between the pics. In the first, the doorway has a double door. In the second, it is a single door in the doorway. In the first pic, the wall behind the bed is drywall. In the second, it is a brick wall. Either the friend had a huge budget, or the pics are fake.

They turned the double door into a single sliding door. You can see the rest of it behind the shelving unit. You can also get faux brick removable wallpaper for rental apartments or homes. So yeah, this was very doable. And not necessarily on a huge budget.

This is why I want to put one on our property for guests. Airstreams are big, they have kitchens, and they're designed to be hooked up to water and power. The house we're building is open plan with no plans for a dedicated spare bedroom, so this would give guests privacy and a space to retreat.

If you like the mid-century modern style, it’s well done. I don’t like all straight lines and sharp angles. I think that’s what Jinal P meant by the Before being “cozier.” This could be a doctor’s waiting room, or a lobby seating area of a hotel. Just personal preference, of course.

Okay, so we have apparently come full circle in home design; They turned their suburban half-bath into a chic outhouse. The addition of exterior siding is surprisingly very cute. I truly love the tile and the tap and the addition of a window for air and light. However, They could have skipped the faux plant and I sincerely hope no one paid actual money for that towel ladder.

I agree that there’s a lot of stuff that would have to be secured before you could drive. In particular, that metal chair with the pointed legs would definitely have to be secured somehow, because it would be a deadly missile in an accident, and probably even with a hard braking. It IS a very nice change, but I dislike the rather deceptive trick of closing all the curtains in the Before picture to emphasize the darkness and claustrophobic feeling. (Have you noticed that the majority of these “makeovers “ use that trick to make the After photo look better?) They removed the dinette cum bed on the left; maybe they didn’t need the bed, but do they take everything off the two ottoman cubes and use them as a dining table? Also, did they remove the blinds from the windows on the right? I don’t see any evidence of any window cover in the After photo, which would be untenable in an RV. Not trying to be a Debby Downer; it IS nice, but this is a place to point out our observations, right?

PHEW!! Much better! Wood paneling and drop ceilings = ugly! The only thing I think they could have done better on is that ugly brickwork around the 'fireplace' area. Some tiles would have been so much better. But it's still a HUGE improvement!

Brown sofa with gray walls doesn’t do it for me, and it looks like there is no space between the trunk and the sofa, and very little space between trunk and stove. (I’m wondering if they chose a metal trunk instead of wood so it wouldn’t catch fire being so near the stove, but if so, touch that trunk and you’d get burned!). Also, no lamps anywhere so obviously no reading in there. However, overall it is a pleasant room and 1,000% improvement over the Before!

It does look better, but why would anyone get rid of cabinets and a range hood, and what is this trend with open shelving? Also, it appears, there is no backsplash behind the stove... and what's with that rack thing on the wall behind the stove? I'll bet that's fun to clean cooking splatter off of after making a meal.

    Gabriel Proulx-Jalbert
    Community Member
7 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

Should have put a range hood, they are design to be in a kitchen. That fan is probably not powerful enough the suck rapidly the steam out plus it's going to be a pain to clean.

Hahahahaha. Enough with the Mason jars! This is what's wrong with kids using design magazines as source material with no educated/experienced reality check; cooking in this kitchen would be a cruel joke. They removed the hood ventilation for the GAS stove! Gas has exhaust, not to mention cooking almost anything puts particulate material in to the air. Then, they painted everything white and took all the dishes and pantry items out of the cabinets with doors. (All the rage, however, an utterly stupid fad that will go away.) These newly weds are about to find out what cleaning with no end is like. Post script: No oven. That floor is ugly as sin. Ikea pine countertops stain very easily and have a two-three year lifeline.

I love Mason jars for storage, but I don’t keep them out in view. And I agree with everything else, although I like and considered wood countertops before going with granite. Wasn’t sure I could maintain them.

I’d do anything to have a sunroom, because I crave natural light. But if their laundry was previously simply a closet behind louvered doors, as so many are, or even worse, in the kitchen (!) I can understand. But I’d try to keep at least a tiny part of the sunroom where I could have my morning coffee, read, etc.

Change furniture out, paint wooden railing on stairs, add a couple of accessories and plants, replace ugly A/C units, zoom out enough to capture a lighting fixture we couldn't see in the first shot, and take the photo at a different time of the day when the sun is really lighting up the room, and voila! I really liked that mirror in the first shot better than the ocean wave painting...

I love builtins, but adding some nice molding and especially carrying them to the ceiling (molding could accomplish that also) would substantially upgrade them. And they need some serious lessons in how to style shelves. Remove a shelf or two and place some substantial pieces on them to balance things. And um, some books. And the placement of a line of little things on the mantle is unfortunate. Joanna Gaines (on the tv) is pointing and saying, “Those shelves need help!”

Italian Restaurant, eh? O-Kay. If this is the same room, they spent a LOT of money. They moved the exhaust fan from the wall to the ceiling, completely replaced the window, added the large vanity, replaced the toilet, took out one tile floor and put in another, more expensive one, retired for the double outlet between the sinks, replumbed the sink for two, and put in a marble vanity top. Not saying it isn’t the same room, just saying it was one expensive makeover.

    jevais

Italian bathrooms are done often in lovely marble or fine tiles. This is outdated. Italian design is understated and very streem lined. This doesn't look even like an Italian restaurant. Less is more in Italian design. Just an old fashion bathroom.

Looks nice if you like the colors. But “restored?” Painted, new laminate flooring, cushions, a piece of tile-topped board next to the sink, and a couple of puck lights.oh, and a mirror stuck to the closet door. Not quite a restoration. But clean and bright. And colorful. Certainly an improvement.

They moved away from the window and farther to the left, so the building across the street is at a totally different angle. Balcony no longer in the picture. And you do realize that the tree in the After picture is NOT the same on on the left of the Before picture? I love the fireplace, which is not visible in the first picture. They also tore out the crown molding and rebuilt coffers for the curtains, painted, and rearranged. Never underestimate the power of paint. It's often the cheapest, most effective thing you can do to make a room look better.

So Renovating is: Take a picture from your living rooom at night. Shove some furniture around Hang some curtains. Take another picture the next morning. I wish I'd come up with that idea 20 years ago. Would have saved me a lot of labour and money.

What counts as a "loft" it looks like a normal room - a "loft" surely is the uppermost area of a building directly under the roof eaves and rafters, with sloping ceilings etc

    boredkoala

Where I live "loft" is a style of unit... Usually very high ceilings, often a conversion from warehouse or factory or even commercial space, and at least one bit of exposed ductwork, piping, or original materials. :-)

I noticed that too but it seems some of these pics are of the same homes, just different rooms. There was one a few pages back also called "Mid-Century Modern Family Home Makeover" that showed a bedroom with a single bed in the before but with two twin beds in the after. I'm wondering if maybe siblings switched rooms? I think a lot of these pics are also of homes that have been sold and are being flipped.

Many buyers are put off by a lot of books because they are intimidated by the seller's presumed intellect. Ridiculous, I know, but I've had to "get rid" of my books every time I've listed my place.

If you've ever had to live in a pink bedroom before it was finally unpinked, you'd understand how just about anything else is an improvement. I had that as a teenager when we moved to California. I got what was obviously a girl's room that was so pink I felt like I was sleeping inside a bottle of Pepto! I was overjoyed when it was painted a calm, lovely pale blue.

It actually did, in a way. Doing away with the monster-tub-that-nobody-uses gave them at LEAST an extra meter of space, and the open shower (no doors) stopped it looking like it cut off at a weird angle. /// That said I find open showers to be cold. The only way to stay warm is to stay directly under the water.

I don't understand why this got voted down so much. It's kind of cool, and at least it's a real before and after, not some fake post with pictures taken from Google.

Not really a makeover when all they did is paint some shapes on the wall and add a picture. All the colors and furniture are the same

I guess this fit the owner's taste ( maybe to go with the painting) but i find it overcrowded and I don't like the colors.

I do not think the words "Ultra-Refined" mean what you think they do.

After we put everything out in the driveway, we still couldn't find chairs that match.

The before room needed a brightening, such as white paint and new floor, but that wall would creep me out. Looks like spiders' eyes.
