Whether it be a puppy or a pony, all of us have dreamt of having a pet at least once in our lives. One of the two is a little easier to care for and if the pup is big enough, one can pretend to ride it as though it were a horse. If you’re a cat, lizard, snake, or rodent person, no worries—all furry and not so fluffy creatures are welcome here!

Welcome, dear readers, to a post that is wholesome like no other, full of delightfully cute pets of all shapes and sizes. But they’re not just any ordinary pets, mind you! These little darlings have either just been adopted or their owners have shared a picture of their adoption from a few years back.

We also had the opportunity to speak with Murad Kirdar, the Public Relations Officer at Santa Fe Animal Shelter & Humane Society, who was very kind to answer some of our questions regarding pet adoption during the holiday period, so make sure you stick around for that!

As you’re scrolling through, please remember to upvote your favorites and leave some comments for good measure! If you can’t seem to get enough, you’re in luck as Bored Panda has done quite a few of these compilations, so you are more than welcome to scope out the adorable pets from July and August. But now let’s get into it!

My take on this, is It doesn't matter when it happened, IT HAPPENED.. It was a beautiful gesture by a kind woman to a grieving lonely man... Seems like everybody has to analyze everything today, analyze it to death. Take the story for what it is and be thankful for it. The world today is a desperately broken scary place, Any act of kindness should be shared as many people as possible. Its Needed so badly in these desperate times..🌺💜✌️

The story was literally reported by CNN. I doubt they would run the story if he didn't consent to that. I'm sorry but I trust actual journalists more than random comments from strangers on Facebook.

As Christmas is just behind us and masses of wrapping paper are headed towards the recycling plants, we can sit back and enjoy the gifts that we received. Half of the chocolate Santas that I got are gone, destroyed, with the rest awaiting their fate to be dunked into some hot coffee and monched on head first.

But as the rest of my sweets dissipate, there are those gifts that will last decades or a full lifetime. Getting a pet for the holiday season may be a dream come true for a lot of kids and adults alike. Truly, is there anything better than your new best friend entering your life at a time of festive joy, fairy lights, and silly music? Whelp, there’s definitely things to consider beforehand.

Murad Kirdar, the Public Relations Officer at Santa Fe Animal Shelter & Humane Society, believes that adopting a living creature should be a decision that is never taken lightly. “It would help if you always thought twice, three times and maybe four times before adopting any animal,” he told Bored Panda. “Dogs and cats can live up to 17 to 20 years. Caring for another living creature is a lifelong commitment, not an impulse decision.”

It's great that we care enough to do this for animal siblings. Why can't we do the same when people are adopting or fostering children?

Agreed. There's a family that I know that didn't want 4 of their daughters to be separated, as they're bio sisters. There's also this family (who I don't know personally) that's adopted most of their kids and has kept every sibling pair together.

It looks like the dark one is probably either an Australian Mist (breed) or Bullseye Tabby (not a breed, strictly about markings). The circle on the side of the belly is a clear giveaway. The white blaze where the "Tabby M" would be on the forehead is what makes me unsure.

He looks like my cousin's Australian Cattle Dog. A very high-energy animal bred for the stamina necessary for long hauls over rough terrain. NOT a breed for everyone, esp apartment dwellers (their bark can be quite piercing).

Question for anyone that works in a shelter, are dogs generally happy being in shelters? I would think being around other dogs and lots of people would be an ideal environment for them. Obviously I'm not arguing against people adopting them and I understand that shelter have finite resources, I'm just interested in the question of their mood.

    Jessisaur

I used to visit shelters a lot and I've studied dog behavior so I'll give my best answer. Dogs in shelters are often very anxious because it's very overwhelming for them. There's barking, tons of new smells, unknown dogs, and strange people. Some dogs that develop more serious anxiety or depression can be taken into foster care where they live and are taken care of in a home until they find their forever family. Obviously the shelter is not an ideal environment but it's so important to keep them open and keep adopting them out. Without shelters, many dogs wouldn't be here today. Shelters take in strays to reunite them with a family. And the other dogs have a roof over their heads and food and water until they get a home.

When it comes to pets being gifted for Christmas, Murad believes that this is one gift that should not be on the wishlist. “I am a firm believer that a pet should never be a gift,” he said. “The pet parent should be able to choose the personality of the pet they are best matched with. For example, you wouldn’t want a toy poodle if you are a hiker.”

Though, if the person has been dreaming of a pet, it may be a good idea to get a little bit more creative without actually choosing the pet for them. “Instead of ‘gifting’ an animal, I suggest wrapping up some dog toys or cat bowls, then bringing that person to a shelter or rescue and letting them pick out the animal they choose,” Murad advised.

It usually doesn't happen so easily. I always tell people who are considering adding more pets that you can choose possible options, but your existing pets get the final say. And "just throwing them in together" is a horrible idea. Jackson Galaxy gives the best tips on doing this properly.

There are many considerations one should take into account when adopting a pet, and it seems that those oftentimes get ignored. “When you adopt, it’s a commitment, period,” Murad said. “Too many people still bring home an animal because ‘it's cute.’ But did they think long-term?” The expenses and the time that it takes to train a pet often get ignored.

Furthermore, certain issues such as household members being allergic or not wanting to help take care of the animal need to be considered. Pets will always need companionship and training, so if one is unprepared to provide either, maybe having pets isn’t for them. Throughout his years of working with animals, Murad has come to the conclusion that the most successful adoptions are the “ones that are planned, and the person has done their homework on the animal.”

Bonjour monsuieur, have ze merriest of Christmases (read in French accent)

    View more comments

There are some positives for adopting a new family member during the holidays. Most importantly—Adopting a pet saves a life and makes more room at the shelter for an animal in need of a warm bed. Plus, with everyone on vacation from school and work, the family has extra time at home to get to know and train the new pet, easing the transition of adoption.

The ASPCA highly encourages folks to adopt during the holidays. Their study conducted in 2013 revealed that there’s no harm in giving an animal as a gift, as long as it’s done right. They found that adopting a pet during the holidays has no negative effect on emotional attachment and 86% of pets adopted during the holidays remained in the home.

However, we cannot ignore the other side of the same coin. A dog is for life, not for Christmas. Sadly, the excitement of owning a pet sometimes overshadows the reality of the responsibilities said pets bring with them. It’s not as easy to fix an “oopsie” of adopting a pet that you can’t really take care of, so better not to make these mistakes to begin with, as it’s the animal that will suffer the most.

I don’t think our animal rescue centres in the UK put down healthy animals, they might have done in the past, but quite a few of them state they’ll never euthanise a healthy animal. Although I know some people do as the vets to put their pet to sleep if it’s inconvenient for them or they’re moving etc, which I can’t even begin to fathom.

Dogs bond with their humans and may not understand why that bond was suddenly broken, says Rebecca Ruch-Gallie, service chief of community practice at Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Additionally, dogs thrive with routine, she says. Entering a shelter for the first time, adoption, acclimation to a new home, and relinquishment to the shelter again can be disorienting for the animal.

As Adrian Burder, Chief Executive for Dogs Trust, said: “Dogs Trust take in thousands of much-loved dogs from heartbroken owners who sadly find themselves unable to continue to care for their dogs due to unavoidable changes in their circumstances, so it’s particularly hard for staff when they see [...] dogs handed in simply because their owners bought them on a whim and consider them little more than toys to be discarded when the novelty wears off.”

But if after all this, you still think that adopting a new pet for Christmas is the right choice for you, veterinarians Bronwyn Orr and Mark Westman have some tips and advice for you. If adopting a pet for a child, remember the parent is ultimately responsible for the pet. Consider adopting an older cat (eight years and over) or a middle-aged dog (five to eight years of age), as they are the hardest to re-home and, thus, spend the longest time in the shelter.

👏😻👍And they should be in a harness & leashed whenever outside too. Safer for them, the wildlife and us (car accidents, etc).

One day, I spotted a cat just walking down the sidewalk. Suddenly, a leaf blew across his path. He immediately leaped on it and wrestled it into submission then calmly continued walking down the sidewalk. I have to admit I was a little jealous. Cats have so much fun just being cats!

Christmas decorations and ornaments such as tinsel and Christmas tree hangings can be ingested by the pet by accident, so be aware of that. Dogs also can get very sick with pancreatitis after consuming a fatty meal, so no feeding leftover Christmas ham or sausages. Or chocolate—pups and chocolate don’t mix.

December is an incredibly chaotic month, full of festivities, loud noise and lots of people walking in and out of the home, which can be overwhelming for a new pet. Just this alone may deter one from adopting right in the middle of the holiday season, and perhaps keeping the special occasion for the New Year.

The Selkirk Rex is a breed of cat with highly curled hair. From a quick glance at Google, it appears they come in all colors, patterns, but the coat is unique. They're a large-breed cat, too. Males up to 16 pounds. Average lifespan 14 years.

I figured fire was involved from the look of this face. But the breed has brittle curly whiskers, which tend to break easily, never getting very long. They're probably a bit clumsy, I'd guess.

There's a stigma against cats with FIV. Often, people are told to just have them put down. My sister and I have adopted 3 and each one was/is a wonderful, loving cat. They just need a loving home for however long they live.

It's a lentivirus that affects ONLY cats. It's passed on by being badly/ deeply bitten by an infected cat. It often shows no symptoms and they tend to live about as long as un-infected cats.

Just because they have Feline Aids doesn't mean their life is short. Scrappy was an older cat who had it and he lived with us for 5 more years. The other cats never got infected..no mating or fighting.

No, he was a hero and king of Lycia, that kills the chimera. He has another name in Greek too, Hipponous or something like that. He is also the grandfather of Glaucus from the Iliad. Lycia sided with Troy, and Glaucus commanded the Lycian army. One of my favorite parts is when Diomedes meets Glaucus in combat. When challenged to one on one combat, Glaucus says as a grandson of Bellerophon he would accept any challenge. Turns out Diomedes grandad and Bellerophon were homies, so they decide to be homies too and not kill each other. Diomedes gives Glaucus his armor in a gesture of bestiness. All very touching, while people are dying all around them. Sorry i know more about his grandson than I do Bellerophon. I think his dad was a god, Poseidon maybe? Not Zeus, I know that much

From the tiniest Elf Owl to the biggest Great Gray Owl, each group is called a Parliament. The term first originated by C.S.Lewis in the Chronicles of Narnia. They can rotate their head 270° and have a special system for pooling blood to protect them when it's cut off while the head is in such positions. Not all owls hoot. Barn Owls eat up to 1,000 mice a year, whole. Owls cough up pellets consisting of the indigestible parts like bones & teeth.

Isn't it amazing - and wonderful- how quickly we can fall in love with an animal? We know they won't hurt us, but rather give us unconditional love. I wish human to human love could be this easy and pure.

Having a child can feel like that. Just instant overwhelming love, joy, pride, and an urge to care for and protect. But as far as relationships with significant others and friends, yes, it would be great if we felt that unconditional love, loyalty, and importance.

Please be patient. We rescued a tabby who'd been kept in a cage for years and it took her quite a while to trust us. We just let her come to us and now she's a snuggle bug.

Clean out the space and put a bed in there. Cats like to be able to retreat to confined spaces where they can be near their humans. And boxes 📦 Cats like boxes.

She looks scared to death,, and the plant she is crawling in is toxic. PLEASE get her to a vet. "Rescued from Reddit" is not good. Real rescue organizations make sure the kitties are ready for a home and family. She is not ready for that, but I have a feeling it may already be too late. If you truly love her, get her to a vet.

My rescue, Maggie, does the same thing. Wherever I am there she is. Our friends got divorced and we inherited her. She's a 14yo Sheltie, Jack Russell mix and the calmest, kindest dog I've ever met. And she fits in perfectly with our Rat Terrier and Pom. And cat and seven chickens. It's noisy at my house. 😆

Set him up for success. Puppies chew. Keep the shoes put away, get some Bitter Apple spray for things you can’t put up. Lots of tough chew toys, deer antlers are great. Have patience. Don’t yell when he has accidents in the house. Give him lots of attention, play time and love. You have a new best friend. Enjoy it. 😁

Possibly stepped on something hot or corrosive. Looks clean and should heal well.

I'm under the impression the poster needs to keep this cat inside for at least 3 weeks so it'll imprint on the new home. Otherwise, he'll wander off. Does anyone know if this is truth or old wives tale?
