Depending on a person's experience, where they live, and what they want to do, their job search can last anywhere from a few weeks to several months. (Heck, certain specialists get headhunted even while they're happily employed.) But according to some estimates, in the United States, on average, it takes around 44 days from your first application to receive an offer.

And the subreddit r/RecruitingHell offers a glimpse into what this period looks like. Filled with strange listings and jokes about endless rounds of interviews, it highlights the frustrations and absurdities that can make you feel hopeless.

Sadly there are sometimes situations where legal or procedural requirements insist that other applications are invited and treated on merit, so even if the recruiting manager has got their 100% perfect fit internal candidate they are made to go through the whole palaver of interviewing external applicants too.

That happens quite often, for compliance companies must advertise the job publicly and hold interviews, sadly wasting time of interviewer and candidates in the process.

Even within companies they do this... they keep telling my wife to apply because she already has the experience and knowledge, have her go through multiple interviews, everyone is happy with her, then hire the outside candidate. By the second time this happened, I said "You know what's going to happen, right?" Every.D**n.Time. In her industry, she has to leave for a promotion... three times, she went somewhere else for a promotion and nice raise, then came back to a promotion and nice raise. Rarely do they promote from within.

If you have a disability some Companies have an automatic interview policy. This is great as obviously it means someone with a disability is being given the chance of employment. However, it's not great at all when they can't or won't make Reasonable Adjustments for interviews and even worse have clearly already given someone the job and are just doing the disability interviews after the event to meet Company policy.

    burn .....

According to Toni Frana, Career Expert Manager at FlexJobs, the market remains very competitive.

"It isn't uncommon to see hundreds of applicants applying for one job. These conditions make the entire process of looking for jobs, applying to jobs, and interviewing for jobs frustrating," she told Bored Panda.

"Add to that, candidates report getting ghosted by employers, and the overall effort job seekers put into landing a job feels very h**h and draining."

Even if you are experienced, you still need to be shown the basics like how to use their company’s software which is VERY important, how travel and mileage is handled (per diem or reimbursement?), where everything is, who to talk to for whatever, etc, etc, etc. in other words, you may thoroughly understand the concepts of the job, but there’s still the basic stuff you have to learn. If you aren’t shown how to enter a customer’s order in the software, you’re pretty much dead in the water. It’s risky to just give someone a login and password then tell them to sign in and have a look around to get familiar with the software, especially if there aren’t any failsafes built into it to keep them from inadvertently erasing or activating something important or risky.

I’d done 3 types of histology in a lab looking at a type of gut cells.I moved to another state and was hired in a project looking at capillary beds. I was competent in basic histology that works for almost everything but had to do preps for SEM (scanning electron microscopy.) Sure, I could do the basics but I had no one around to help me troubleshoot or even use the preps. A year later a post-doc who was going to use the SEM joined the lab but at that point that the slides had weird artifacts in the prep. The PI got mad at me because I didn’t know every kind of prep and I didn’t have anyone to help. I spent weeks scouring the literature - you know, from the library- and couldn’t find out how to fix it. Using the materials from the library stacks meant collecting bound journals, flipping to a paper, reading enough to see if it had what I needed and if so, carrying a stack of them to copy in the department office. The PI didn’t know how to do the histology either.

In the face of these challenges, Frana said it remains important for job seekers to tailor their applications—including their resumes and cover letters—for each position they apply for.

"However, there are a few other strategies to execute that can help people have more success gaining visibility with hiring teams," she added.

"Networking and having conversations with people you know, reaching out and introducing yourself to people who work at the companies you are interested in, and working to make sure your digital profiles have a solid personal brand that positions you as an expert in your field can increase your visibility."

I have a small gap in my resume and I wrote a brief description of what I was doing at the time. Nearly everyone I've interviewed with has thanked me for including it. Most of them appreciate the honesty. Of course I wasn't in jail or anything negative at the time, so I can understand if someone doesn't want to disclose. In any case you shouldn't HAVE to.

Take classes that will give you entrepreneurial skills: accounting, language, statistics, whatever. Then you're marketable in whatever field you prefer. A lot of niche business opportunities require people with business-management/bookkeeping/sales/marketing skills, but often people with those skills never think to go into said niche business.

The company who hired him probably didn't make him wait weeks and weeks with multiple rounds of interviews. Honestly, how many interviews do job candidates really need to sit through? Just get on with it. People are starving and trying to pay their bills while you make them interview over and over again. Either hire them or let them know you're not going to in a reasonable amount of time.

Depends on the job and the level of the job within the organization. I was interviewing for a position many years ago and it was an administrative position not a clerical position and actual administrator. After I interviewed with my direct supervisor and the vice president, the third interview this was the people who would report to me. And I thought that was a really good touch and I tried to do it later in life and sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't. Sometimes that third interview is not so much to determine if you are the best candidate qualification wise but to determine if you're a fit with the people that you'll work with.

"The idiot we somehow hired has made a s******w of the position. Be prepared to clean up everything he messed upon addition to doing current responsibilities."

However, sometimes it's not the recruiter but the candidate themself who can hurt their chances. And it's a passive attitude that can cause a lot of damage.

"Now is not the time to be reactive in your job search. In other words, waiting for recruiters and hiring managers to reach out to you will likely not yield the results you are looking for," Frana said.

"Taking a proactive approach where you are actively applying to multiple jobs, layering in networking activities, and focusing on learning new skills for professional development will provide you with better results."

Potentially, though it can happen if the age requirement is essential to the normal and safe operation of the business, and there is no less discriminatory way to achieve the same result. One job I could see this in, is in fire fighting. Most departments require 18 years of age, and no older than 40-50. Though there are some departments (such as volunteer types) where you can start at 16. Depends on the state employment laws.

I would be stuck up front on a register and have to go to the kitchen, wash my hands, slice the ham, make the sandwich, wash my hands again & go back to a register. I tried to get the 17 yo Asst Mgr to let me swap with somebody in the kitchen and he wouldn't do it. I'm in graphic design which is a bit different. We've hired two recent graduates without problems of arrogance. The attitude in trades and technical fields may be different. Those people straight out of school are looking for experience, so they tend to be humbler and more cooperative.

Ah, as an "HR Leader" I always pushed hiring recent grads. I worked mainly in the trades and manufacturing - we got the opportunity to train them "our way", and the trades are (were) a great way to make higher than average pay right out of school. When someone eventually left for a different career or bigger/better things I always felt a little pride in thinking we helped start them on the right foot... But, I know this is apparently not the case 90% of other places

    View more comments

The good news is that a 2024 survey found 65% of hiring managers are open to hiring candidates based on their unique skill set, even if they lack traditional work experience.

So, if you trust both the process and yourself, you should eventually be able to find the right fit.

There's always so much else to infer a candidate's age that they wouldn't really need this anyway. BTW It's only really a US thing that you don't include age/DoB on the job application/CV. I only came across it once vetting for a position based in NY (I was in CH, international team) and it stuck out as very strange, but his university history made it pretty obvious how old he was. Which was 52, for a programming position. He got the job, was technically competent, but didn't really fit, lasted about 6 months IIRC, but nothing to do with his age,

Back when I was job seeking (in another galaxy, I'm that old now) the catch was if you were a veteran you had to provide a copy of your DD-214, your discharge certificate. That form has your birth date on it.

The coding one is valid, if you're going in the tech field. Same goes with 3D design. To simplify it, if a person started learning code 9 years ago (2016) there's a host of new coding languages which have been updated, as well as some format changes that can simplify procedures. With 3D design, there's new programs that feature similar... yet different interfaces which designers might not understand when compared with whatever system they learned on. So, when a company is asking this, what they're basically asking is "Are we going to need to retrain you, or not?" If they have to retrain you, even if you've been doing the action for 9+ years, they're less likely to hire you when compared with someone who only has 1-2 years of experience. While that person may not have a lot of experience, they're more adapted to the modern code or programs, and it's easier/faster/cheaper to train them.

In the US, it's illegal to ask someone their age during a job interview (obligatory IANAL). Combining the irrelevant "How old were you when you started coding?" with the legitimate "How long have you been coding?" certainly seems like a sneaky way to get around the illegal "How old are you?" question. It would be interesting if someone who is a lawyer could chime in on this one.

A long time ago (25 years I think) I worked at a university. One day a guy came in to the office, handed me his business card and a $100 bill. He asked if I would type out a letter saying he had graduated from our Masters program. Apparently his employer had caught him lying on his resume and he needed something to confirm he had the degree. The best part is that he was the Director of HR. 🤣🤣 I was a little offended that he only offered $100. 😂 My boss told him to get lost and kept his business card. I don't know what happened to him, but I assume he lost his job. Idiot.

If you state that they were your boss, and they weren't, and you're looking to get paid for the job, it's fraud, and is, in fact illegal, just as a fake CV/resume is. Generally you just get fired for it if you get the job, or just 'do not hire' listed if you don't, but if you lie too hard and get the job whichis well paid, actual jail time has happened.

You might wanna look up actual laws regarding fraud. And what it means to defraud. And whether or not that is criminally punishable and then see if there is any legal precedent for such things as lying about references. Because I can tell you right now there is zero. Legal precedent

Prompt: There is clearly something wrong here. What's going on? Why the sinister requirements? AI responce: 1. The Most Likely Scenario: "Body Shopping" or Shadow Staffing This is a common but unethical practice in some consulting circles. What it is: The company ("Upward Tech") has likely sold a client on a project by claiming to have a team of expert, senior, on-shore (e.g., North American or European) engineers. In reality, they may not have those people or want to pay for them. The Deception: They hire you, potentially at a lower rate (e.g., if you are in a country with a lower cost of living), and have you pretend to be "John Smith from Upward Tech's Austin office" during calls. The client believes they are getting a local, senior expert but are actually getting someone else.

Potentially. One good way to test it is to use one of those reloadable gift cards. I say potentially, because I have seen companies where they DID require the employee to have a credit card on file. This was because rather than having a corporate travel card, the employee would use their own card for purchases while travelling, and then reimburse the employee.

If my attorney advises against giving you said information they will work with you until all agree to a safe and secure means of achieving the same ends. Furthermore, I’ll use my outstanding written communication skills to evaluate the new employee questionnaire to determine what I’ve answered already in my resume and cover letter. Think they’d give me a pass?

There is this weird psychological trick where membership in a s****y organization is made desirable by nothing except the difficulty in becoming a member. Until (or if) we get in and find out how s****y it really is, our minds trick us into thinking it’s so great and exclusive and desirable because it’s nearly impossible to get in. One wonders if companies are trying to trigger this reaction by making it nearly impossible to get hired to do a s****y job at their s****y office or factory for a s****y wage.

Private companies can legally discriminate against potential employees, as long as the discrimination is not based on four key factors: Race, Religion, Gender/s*x, or the applicant is a member of a protected class. Interestingly though, there is some "wiggle" room when it comes to three of those. IE Race, Religion, and Gender/S*x. For example, a religious book store, can refuse to hire someone from another religion or an Atheist. An all girl's school, or all boy's school, can refuse to hire someone based on their gender or s*x. A company or organization that seeks to elevate a minority race (for example a group that seeks to help hispanic teens), can refuse to hire anyone outside that specific race.

Nine protected characteristics in the UK. I’m curious about other countries. And we certainly don’t give the ‘wriggle room’ for religious beliefs that the US does. https://www.equalityhumanrights.com/equality/equality-act-2010/protected-characteristics

It's from the empire strikes back, and it's a tad out of order, 3po gets disintegrated not long after they land on Bespin, then after the Han carbonate etc. part, where Leia and Lando are escaping on the falcon, that's when they go back for Luke. Please don't downvote me, but it's my favourite SW film.

Do we know this to be a company that ghosts people? Is this a justified retaliation? Just because you hate what one company did doesn't mean you take it out on a different one. Relying on algorithms and artificial “intelligence” that only knows what it’s been told and is incapable of simple human judgment of character which is an ability only achieved through experience dealing with humans, is foolhardy at best, dangerous at worst. Just have a hiring department staffed with human beings able to hire someone with ability, credentials, and experience, and is the best person for the job, ffs, a talent that AI will NEVER have.

My family owns a beach resort that’s been operating for 4 generations. Our marketing partner has a few other small resort brands under it ( think, “Autograph Collection”) & I work as a consultant for us & our sister companies under this umbrella whilst still having my share of ownership of our property/brand. Because of the marketing association, I am bombarded with cold calls & emails pitching AI solutions for all aspects of HR, from hiring to employee evaluations. We will NEVER replace our people with AI. We’re also unique in location, job pool size & hiring from within house & families. We’ve grandparents & grandkids of the same families working (way different jobs) for us. I can’t imagine being so cold & inhumane to subject a candidate from our community or island to an AI evaluation.

I got my Masters and applied to at least a thousand + jobs over the course of a year, with ZERO replies. In the meantime, my husband decided to go into business for himself, and needed me to run the business end while he went out in the field doing the work. So now, I am the one hiring other people—-which I do IN PERSON. So far all my hires, who aren’t necessarily young or over educated or experienced, have fit in, learned the job quickly, and are doing great. Who knows what quality of employees I would’ve ended up with if I’d relied on algorithms to hire them instead of my experience with people. A lot of the time those who look good on paper don’t look good in reality, because the paper is all b******t.

If you can't be bothered to make sure your application matches the job you're applying for, there's no reason for an employer to take you seriously.

OK, so they set up their systems so that when an organisational element that was part of the recruitment process received an application, they notify the applicant. They thought that was important. I agree. I don't care if it is OTT. It happens because they respect applicants, as they should.

Check it out in Reddit. 11:55 email says the position has already been filled , and one of the comments says "currently work in this exact company, location and office. count your blessings. dont tell anyone cause its not "official" yet and theyre trying to keep it on the down low to not cause mass quitting, but theyre letting NEARLY everyone go except for executives, managers, and a very small handful of top performers by the end of may. We're being replaced in may by an outsourcing company, which im sure the job listing was made for. thats probably why you were auto rejected, you werent part of the people for the outsourcing company that the job listing was made for."

1711 applications over 18 months to finally get ONE job. That. Is. B******T. It shouldn’t be that way. The Boomers are retiring, so their jobs should be opening up. When PEOPLE and not algorithms were looking at applications, sending out/dropping off maybe 20 applications max was enough to get several interviews and land at least one job offer back in the day.

One-way interviews, also known as pre-recorded or asynchronous interviews, allow candidates to record their responses to pre-set questions without a live interviewer present, streamlining the hiring process for employers. What is a One-Way Interview? A one-way interview is a type of job interview where candidates answer a series of predetermined questions via video recording. Unlike traditional interviews, there is no live interaction; candidates record their responses at their convenience, and employers review the videos later. This format can be fully automated, with some interviews analyzed by artificial intelligence (AI) to assess candidates.

I have only seen a good result from it years ago where I used to work.
