50 Job Listings With Requirements So Ridiculous People Walked Away Immediately (New Pics)
Interview With ExpertDepending on a person's experience, where they live, and what they want to do, their job search can last anywhere from a few weeks to several months. (Heck, certain specialists get headhunted even while they're happily employed.) But according to some estimates, in the United States, on average, it takes around 44 days from your first application to receive an offer.
And the subreddit r/RecruitingHell offers a glimpse into what this period looks like. Filled with strange listings and jokes about endless rounds of interviews, it highlights the frustrations and absurdities that can make you feel hopeless.

Thoughts?
Sadly there are sometimes situations where legal or procedural requirements insist that other applications are invited and treated on merit, so even if the recruiting manager has got their 100% perfect fit internal candidate they are made to go through the whole palaver of interviewing external applicants too.
That happens quite often, for compliance companies must advertise the job publicly and hold interviews, sadly wasting time of interviewer and candidates in the process.

Even within companies they do this... they keep telling my wife to apply because she already has the experience and knowledge, have her go through multiple interviews, everyone is happy with her, then hire the outside candidate. By the second time this happened, I said "You know what's going to happen, right?" Every.D**n.Time. In her industry, she has to leave for a promotion... three times, she went somewhere else for a promotion and nice raise, then came back to a promotion and nice raise. Rarely do they promote from within.
Maybe because I work in the nonprofit world, but who would do that?! That’s AWFUL!
Recruiters. They make $$$ for the people they refer. I work in the non-profit industry too - for the last 20+ years. Love what I do. 😊

Most of the jobs I’ve had, in almost 40 years in the paid workforce, I could have done as an after-school job when I was a teenager. You do NOT have to be very smart to work in the typical U.S. corporate workplace.
Totally. I've actually discovered that the easiest jibs pay the most. I'm working less than I ever have, and yet earning more than I ever have. Look at CEO's, paid millions to do nothing, they even sometimes get paid to bankrupt the company! lol

Even if you are experienced, you still need to be shown the basics like how to use their company’s software which is VERY important, how travel and mileage is handled (per diem or reimbursement?), where everything is, who to talk to for whatever, etc, etc, etc. in other words, you may thoroughly understand the concepts of the job, but there’s still the basic stuff you have to learn. If you aren’t shown how to enter a customer’s order in the software, you’re pretty much dead in the water. It’s risky to just give someone a login and password then tell them to sign in and have a look around to get familiar with the software, especially if there aren’t any failsafes built into it to keep them from inadvertently erasing or activating something important or risky.

I was competent in basic histology that works for almost everything but had to do preps for SEM (scanning electron microscopy.) Sure, I could do the basics but I had no one around to help me troubleshoot or even use the preps. A year later a post-doc who was going to use the SEM joined the lab but at that point that the slides had weird artifacts in the prep. The PI got mad at me because I didn’t know every kind of prep and I didn’t have anyone to help. I spent weeks scouring the literature - you know, from the library- and couldn’t find out how to fix it. Using the materials from the library stacks meant collecting bound journals, flipping to a paper, reading enough to see if it had what I needed and if so, carrying a stack of them to copy in the department office. The PI didn’t know how to do the histology either.
This one is just stupid. Any job can be taught. But will you hire someone with experience and it takes 4 weeks, or someone without any experience and it takes several months?

In the face of these challenges, Frana said it remains important for job seekers to tailor their applications—including their resumes and cover letters—for each position they apply for.
"However, there are a few other strategies to execute that can help people have more success gaining visibility with hiring teams," she added.
"Networking and having conversations with people you know, reaching out and introducing yourself to people who work at the companies you are interested in, and working to make sure your digital profiles have a solid personal brand that positions you as an expert in your field can increase your visibility."

Great answer. Definitely beats having to spin a few years of family caregiving into something that sounds businessy. Like saying "I was a change agent and negotiated high level contracts" instead of "I dealt with my elderly parent's Depends and hassled with their health insurance company for hours every week."
I have a small gap in my resume and I wrote a brief description of what I was doing at the time. Nearly everyone I've interviewed with has thanked me for including it. Most of them appreciate the honesty. Of course I wasn't in jail or anything negative at the time, so I can understand if someone doesn't want to disclose. In any case you shouldn't HAVE to.
I was asked that only one time and i just said i had some savings after my last job and decided to go on vacation for a year because i wanted to visit some countries. No problem at all. It was btw the truth but i think that is something even the most workahloc HR person can relate to

Never major in something you hate—regardless of how good the employment prospects are. You’ll be working for several decades, and no matter what your job is, it will k**l your soul. So make the most of college. Major in something you like that you’re good at; party; and make good friends. Those good memories will have to hold you for a while.
Yup. I majored in English and had a wonderful time in college. Then I went to grad school so I could get a job . 😂 At one point in college I took a poetry class and the professor told me I should put together a portfolio and apply for grad school. For Poetry?? Furthermore, the career expert highlighted that it's imperative to follow up on your job applications and send thank-you notes after interviews. "It shows employers you remain interested in the position they are looking to fill," she explained.
When doing this, FlexJobs recommends that you:
- Find the right email and contact the hiring manager directly.
- Be professional.
- Be brief.
- Ask a question to justify your follow-up.
- Express interest in the company (for example, by following it on LinkedIn).
And if a company shows they're considering you, speed up the hiring process by letting them know other employers are interested in you too (but only if that's true).

The company who hired him probably didn't make him wait weeks and weeks with multiple rounds of interviews. Honestly, how many interviews do job candidates really need to sit through? Just get on with it. People are starving and trying to pay their bills while you make them interview over and over again. Either hire them or let them know you're not going to in a reasonable amount of time.
Depends on the job and the level of the job within the organization. I was interviewing for a position many years ago and it was an administrative position not a clerical position and actual administrator. After I interviewed with my direct supervisor and the vice president, the third interview this was the people who would report to me. And I thought that was a really good touch and I tried to do it later in life and sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't. Sometimes that third interview is not so much to determine if you are the best candidate qualification wise but to determine if you're a fit with the people that you'll work with.
Load More Replies...And companies never ghost applicants when they’ve decided to go with a different candidate? F*ck all the way off with that. There needs to be transparency on both sides
Yo. The ABSOLUTE best feeling in the world is being able to say "Please remove me from your candidacy list as I have accepted another position elsewhere." Makes one feel hella desired!

I applied for a job , did the interview . Next day start, they would let me know. NO call back , okay bad luck , 5 weeks later I got a call that the job was mine and to start the next day. rang them 3 hours after I was supposed to start and told them to EFF off. Already started a new job.
"The idiot we somehow hired has made a s******w of the position. Be prepared to clean up everything he messed upon addition to doing current responsibilities."
However, sometimes it's not the recruiter but the candidate themself who can hurt their chances. And it's a passive attitude that can cause a lot of damage.
"Now is not the time to be reactive in your job search. In other words, waiting for recruiters and hiring managers to reach out to you will likely not yield the results you are looking for," Frana said.
"Taking a proactive approach where you are actively applying to multiple jobs, layering in networking activities, and focusing on learning new skills for professional development will provide you with better results."

Potentially, though it can happen if the age requirement is essential to the normal and safe operation of the business, and there is no less discriminatory way to achieve the same result. One job I could see this in, is in fire fighting. Most departments require 18 years of age, and no older than 40-50. Though there are some departments (such as volunteer types) where you can start at 16. Depends on the state employment laws.
I've worked warehouse jobs and employees needed to be 18 to operate the baler. They could put cardboard into it, but they were not allowed to run the cycle to crush the cardboard.

Almost 9 In 10 Hr Leaders Say They Avaoid Hiring Recent Grads
WTF is so scary about recent graduates that an unfulfilled position is considered a better risk??
Here in Germany the quality of education greatly degraded over the years due to massive political mismanagment, to name an example. It became way easier to get a better degree with a lot less knowledge
Load More Replies...My company is a joke because all they hire are recent grads. Every one comes in thinking they got to make a name for themselves but they just screw up everything that had been policy for years.
I'm in graphic design which is a bit different. We've hired two recent graduates without problems of arrogance. The attitude in trades and technical fields may be different. Those people straight out of school are looking for experience, so they tend to be humbler and more cooperative.
Load More Replies...Ah, as an "HR Leader" I always pushed hiring recent grads. But, I know this is apparently not the case 90% of other places

Is This Just A Sneaky Was To Ask How Old I Am?
There's always so much else to infer a candidate's age that they wouldn't really need this anyway. BTW It's only really a US thing that you don't include age/DoB on the job application/CV. I only came across it once vetting for a position based in NY (I was in CH, international team) and it stuck out as very strange, but his university history made it pretty obvious how old he was. Which was 52, for a programming position. He got the job, was technically competent, but didn't really fit, lasted about 6 months IIRC, but nothing to do with his age,
Age discrimination in hiring is illegal in more countries than just the US.
Load More Replies...Back when I was job seeking (in another galaxy, I'm that old now) the catch was if you were a veteran you had to provide a copy of your DD-214, your discharge certificate. That form has your birth date on it.
In the US, it's illegal to ask someone their age during a job interview (obligatory IANAL). Combining the irrelevant "How old were you when you started coding?" with the legitimate "How long have you been coding?" certainly seems like a sneaky way to get around the illegal "How old are you?" question. It would be interesting if someone who is a lawyer could chime in on this one.

Prompt: There is clearly something wrong here. What's going on? Why the sinister requirements? AI responce: 1. The Most Likely Scenario: "Body Shopping" or Shadow Staffing This is a common but unethical practice in some consulting circles. What it is: The company ("Upward Tech") has likely sold a client on a project by claiming to have a team of expert, senior, on-shore (e.g., North American or European) engineers. In reality, they may not have those people or want to pay for them. The Deception: They hire you, potentially at a lower rate (e.g., if you are in a country with a lower cost of living), and have you pretend to be "John Smith from Upward Tech's Austin office" during calls. The client believes they are getting a local, senior expert but are actually getting someone else.

Potentially. One good way to test it is to use one of those reloadable gift cards. I say potentially, because I have seen companies where they DID require the employee to have a credit card on file. This was because rather than having a corporate travel card, the employee would use their own card for purchases while travelling, and then reimburse the employee.

For example, a religious book store, can refuse to hire someone from another religion or an Atheist. An all girl's school, or all boy's school, can refuse to hire someone based on their gender or s*x. A company or organization that seeks to elevate a minority race (for example a group that seeks to help hispanic teens), can refuse to hire anyone outside that specific race.
Nine protected characteristics in the UK. I’m curious about other countries. And we certainly don’t give the ‘wriggle room’ for religious beliefs that the US does. https://www.equalityhumanrights.com/equality/equality-act-2010/protected-characteristics

It wasn't AI, someone was doing voice-to-text with Star Wars on in the background and just didn't gaf.
It's from the empire strikes back, and it's a tad out of order, 3po gets disintegrated not long after they land on Bespin, then after the Han carbonate etc. part, where Leia and Lando are escaping on the falcon, that's when they go back for Luke. I Turned Down A Job Offer And This Is 1 Of The 3 Emails I Received From The Recruiter
Yep - I applied for a job in 2014 - job is still 'open' on their website and I am still awaiting a result lol.

Meaning of course the recruiter is angry because their commission went bust, and just has to blame someone else for their own lack of judgement.
So, the applicant knew they were being unprofessional- could not be bothered to contact the company even with the knowledge that the situation was delicate. What am I missing? Do we know this to be a company that ghosts people? Is this a justified retaliation? Just because you hate what one company did doesn't mean you take it out on a different one. Why are we encouraging dickhole behavior from anyone?
Lol. "we" are not. These people always were and will be children. I never trusted corporations, WY in the Aliens franchize exista for a reason, and why people get stars in their eyes for people like Elon or Steve Jobs, I will never know.

How about recruiters and hiring departments having to pay APPLICANTS for wasting their time when you were going to hire from the inside or the boss’ family anyway?
So long as the company sends back the $20 plus an additional $20 in apology to everybody they don't hire.
Why would anybody want or need to pay an application fee. It's ridiculous that kids or should I say parents have to pay for college applications.
If I already had money, I wouldn’t be applying for a job.
How about the other way around. You pay people who come in for interviews for their time.
This Absolutely Sucks
It'll be a cold day in Hell when I interview with a d**n machine for a job.
My thoughts exactly! You could show up naked and the AI Interviewer would have no idea.

Just have a hiring department staffed with human beings able to hire someone with ability, credentials, and experience, and is the best person for the job, ffs, a talent that AI will NEVER have.
The AI thing is abhorrent BUT if interviewing with a human by videoconference the remainder is appropriate.
My family owns a beach resort that’s been operating for 4 generations. Our marketing partner has a few other small resort brands under it ( think, “Autograph Collection”) & I work as a consultant for us & our sister companies under this umbrella whilst still having my share of ownership of our property/brand. Because of the marketing association, I am bombarded with cold calls & emails pitching AI solutions for all aspects of HR, from hiring to employee evaluations. We will NEVER replace our people with AI. We’re also unique in location, job pool size & hiring from within house & families. We’ve grandparents & grandkids of the same families working (way different jobs) for us. I can’t imagine being so cold & inhumane to subject a candidate from our community or island to an AI evaluation.
I Don't Deserve This
How dare a darker skinned human deign to believe they deserve the best offer? They should be lucky the “Boss” even entertained padding her lack of diversity by offering the job. Now she’s gong to have to hire someone on TurdSocial & pay them 3 times as much…or a living wage. /s(arcasim) - this email is fücking gross.
I'd file a complaint against the hiring manager and the company that hired them. This is outrageous.

Job Hunting In 2025
Colleges Doesn’t Add Value Anymore…
I got my Masters and applied to at least a thousand + jobs over the course of a year, with ZERO replies. In the meantime, my husband decided to go into business for himself, and needed me to run the business end while he went out in the field doing the work. So now, I am the one hiring other people—-which I do IN PERSON. So far all my hires, who aren’t necessarily young or over educated or experienced, have fit in, learned the job quickly, and are doing great. Who knows what quality of employees I would’ve ended up with if I’d relied on algorithms to hire them instead of my experience with people. A lot of the time those who look good on paper don’t look good in reality, because the paper is all b******t.
Humboldt State University, 2013: Went to an on-campus job fair featuring potential hiring sources. Military and law enforcement heavily over-represented, about 80% of all "employers" present. Rudest Rejection Ever
I don't have a problem with this. We rightly cheer applicants who send rude messages about sloppy and disrespectful recruitment processes, and I see no reason why the reverse isn't acceptable. If you can't be bothered to make sure your application matches the job you're applying for, there's no reason for an employer to take you seriously.
Except that jobs are posted all the time that have requirements that are just there to weed out the timid. Entry-level, 10 years experience and an advanced degree required and then they hire internally the guy with 2 years and an associates degree. Quit bullshitting on the job requirements if you want applicants to take them seriously.
Load More Replies...I understand WANTING to say that. But any company I've worked for would fire me for being so rude. Why bother responding at all? Seems like a waste of time.
Exactly. Job seekers and employees get in trouble for being obnoxious. So should recruiters and employers. Fair is fair.

It Is Unacceptable To Put "See Resume" In Your Work History

A Lot Can Happen Under A Minute. Yes, One Minute
OK, so they set up their systems so that when an organisational element that was part of the recruitment process received an application, they notify the applicant. They thought that was important. I agree. I don't care if it is OTT. It happens because they respect applicants, as they should.
Check it out in Reddit. 11:55 email says the position has already been filled , and one of the comments says "currently work in this exact company, location and office. count your blessings. dont tell anyone cause its not "official" yet and theyre trying to keep it on the down low to not cause mass quitting, but theyre letting NEARLY everyone go except for executives, managers, and a very small handful of top performers by the end of may. Got Asked To Do A One Way Interview. I Refused
One-way interviews, also known as pre-recorded or asynchronous interviews, allow candidates to record their responses to pre-set questions without a live interviewer present, streamlining the hiring process for employers. What is a One-Way Interview? A one-way interview is a type of job interview where candidates answer a series of predetermined questions via video recording. Unlike traditional interviews, there is no live interaction; candidates record their responses at their convenience, and employers review the videos later. This format can be fully automated, with some interviews analyzed by artificial intelligence (AI) to assess candidates.

For the most part yes but there are some things that I either don't tell the whole truth or just completely lie. I hate them and always have. It was so bad that the Director of the Department called a 7:00 a.m. mandatory staff meeting to tell us that our boss Kimberly and her boss Kate would no longer be over us. When he told us some of the answers my mouth dropped open at 1 point. It was so much better when we were put under Leigh.

I do NOT want my doctor or lawyer to be AI, until the technology has gone through numerous additional advances, and can be trusted not to out an innocent person in jail (of screw someone out of a settlement they deserve because of course, AI is the product, and therefore the puppet, of big business and will always decide in big business’ favor even if it’s obviously in the wrong) or k**l them on the operating table. So smart phones have these things called "filters" right? You can put bunny ears on people in live video, give them a Disney princess face, or even turn them into a cat. Additionally, we have decades of peer reviewed data and statistics that clearly demonstrate hiring bias, be it race, gender, or even just because the candidate is too short or unattractive to the interviewer. All of this is known and ubiquitous, so maybe you can see where I'm going with this? I can understand wanting to read body language and have the person in the room, but what's preventing employers from using filters to hide race, gender, etc, from the interviewer? If your interest as an employer is to hire the best people, why not intentionally eliminate the bias with filters?
