I've got 2! They are easily the most loving dogs I've ever had... to me! However they hate anyone that is not a family member. We live in an isolated area so they don't get much in the way of interaction so that could be a contributing factor, but my other dog breeds are fine with people.

ANY dog can be, if not properly trained and socialized, dangerous. Unless there is an underlying physical issue with the animal, it is always the human on THIS end of the leash who is the problem, not the dog on THAT end of the leash. I"m far more fearful of the "lap dog" breeds whose owners, all too often, consider their snapping and snarling "cute."

(4) they are great dogs! And some might even be okay in a city, but that is not the 'standard', those are the outliers. They need people who understand their needs and their wyy of thinking and who also can convince a 50 kg dog that yes, you actually DO know better. Otherwise, you get a huge dog that fights other dogs, protects your kids from harm but might harm visiting kids if there is some yelling and squealing involved in the play and which also doesn't stop hunting if it thinks it can catch the deer that's running away. If you try to treat such dogs like you would a Collie or a German Shepherd, you will do them harm and you will not succeed. And do not believe "I'm a great person and I know a lot about dogs _ I am sure I can convince a dog about my skills". The DOG will be the judge of that, nobody else. If it thinks you're a cute little thing that needs help, or an ignorant tyrant, it won't easily change its mind. So please, people: not everything that is floofy is a good pet!

(3) And if that dog chooses that you and your kids are the family, or that your property is the 'pasture', or that your suburb is THEIRS, you might have a big problem. Because as I said: they are not bred to be obedient. they think for themselves and if they believe the postman is dangerous, and you try to tell them that he isn't, it's 50:50 that the dog might believe you vs the dog thinking you are very dumb and need SPECIAL protection. I've gotten to know a few dogs of those type of breeds, and it is not always a thing to train them. You need to CONVINCE them that what you tell them is right and proper, but they will need convincing about your higher insight every day or so because that is in their nature. It has nothing to do with "we don't deserve dogs" - we CREATED dogs. And some of them are so specific in their nature and their needs that they simply shouldn't live in a city with a big, boisterous family where guests visit and other kids come to play. (tbc)

(2) On the other hand, if you have a Collie, even IF the chase-instinct is triggered (not all react to fast little things), you can usually stop them easily with minimal training because that is the nature of the Collie: to be an obedient dog who is a great help in herding sheep. Now, if you have dogs like the one in the pic, or those like the Kangal, you get very sturdy dogs who protect what is 'theirs' to the bone. You can train them to an extend - they aren't dumb, but they are not bred to be obedient. they are usually left with the sheep out in the pastures (talking about Kangals here) and live with them and protect the herd against everyone who is not their owner and against wolves and bears and other dogs because they were raised wih the sheep and 'think they are their family'. Now. If you have such a dog at your home and don't own a herd of sheep and a huge property, that dog has it in its nature to protect 'what is their family', (tbc)
