Radiography is safe for unborn kitties provided it's never done frequently, especially if it's after 40 days of pregnancy. But sometimes it's absolutely crucial to have this done and the risk is worth taking as with humans. No Radiography nurse or Vet would do it otherwise.

Since ultrasound is even worse to count babies than the above radiograph, and since almost no one is willing to pay the heinous prices of hormonal blood work (just look at one of your hospital bills before insurance) on a pet, x-rays are the name of the game. It is also the technology available to most veterinarians -- many have only just been able to afford ultrasound machines -- and most cost-effective for most clients. Veterinary medicine cannot equal human medicine if people aren't willing to pay for their pets' care.

Ola ultrasound is not always clear on dogs and cats as there are usually too many babies. Ultrasound is better suited for animals that typically have fewer babies, such as humans.

So why they didn't do the ultrasonography to this pregnant animals? It's safe for the fetuses. Are all of these animals the accident-survivors? (I hope that it was the only reason for X-raying those animals-moms)

Radiation affects animals differently than it does animals. Plus the amount of radiation used in animal x-ray is way less than that in regular x-ray. Plus, they have to use x-ray for pregnant dogs and cats to verify how many babies there are, which helps determine whether the mother will have to have help during birth.

I can't agree with the argument about life span. Of course, they live shorter then humans, but also pets suffer from cancers. We can't exclude radiation as its cause.

And as Heidi said it just isn't as accurate. 1,2,3,10..wait did I count that kitten already? I have to start over, 1,2, they keep moving!

The other thing they consider is life expectancy. Humans avg 85 dogs 15. Dogs don't live long enough to experience the side effects.
