Love It!
“Getting old” can be a pretty relative term. While most of us would agree that pensioners are “old,” you can also be hit by a wave of “oldness” when you first realize that you aren’t quite as up-to-date with popular culture. Or perhaps you overhear the younger generation (whose existence is already a sign) refer to the films you watch or music you listen to as “retro.”
Despite our best efforts, there is no escape from getting older. Of all the processes on this planet, the passage of time is the one we can’t even start to influence. Realistically, people need to make peace with the fact that every second they fight aging, they age regardless. Instead, images like the ones in this post serve to remind and perhaps educate beyond anything else.

It's also where we keep the restaurant menus, scotch tape and batteries. 🫣

Who just learned that Datsun became Nissan, and that they’re not mutually exclusive car brands? 🙋🏻♀️
Pictures That Make You Feel Old
I remember when we first got a phone that had a speakerphone function. That was groundbreaking.
Yep! And I also remember when my dad got his first "car phone" in the late 80s, too (he worked for IBM.) It was a corded phone and was physically attached to his center console, and it was as large and heavy as a brick... but it was a CAR PHONE. Absolute friggin sorcery to Young Lakota XD
Load More Replies...I remember uncoiling the 25-foot cord that had somehow become so twisted it was about 2 feet.
surprisingly here in UK the phone cords were quite short, unstretched not even 2foot....used to confuse me in America movies the length of the cord
Load More Replies...This photo isn't right. The cord is not stretched out and all entangled.
The rotary phone currently on my wall does not have a tangled cord. It's not an absolute thing :-)
Load More Replies...Being able to slam it down to hang up on someone you didn't like was so satisfying!
This was our home phone in the mid-late 70s/ pretty-muc...342558.jpg
Ours too. I remember when it was installed in around 1973/4. Same colour too - you didn't get a choice in those days unless you were really lucky.
Load More Replies...But the 25' curly cord was the important thing! Got you far enough away no one could hear who you were talking to - maybe even into the closet if you were really lucky
You could connect 2 of those together and make it to the back yard!
Load More Replies...That was one of the more modern ones that had push buttons. I had that same phone, same color, but it was rotary. One of my proudest moments was when I won a 10th caller radio contest on it. If you're familiar with rotary phones and radio contests, you know what an achievement that is.
I remember when caller ID was brand new and on a completely different device from the phone.
Yeah but back then, they weren't constantly calling you about your extended car warranty.
I still have one. When the power goes out, it keeps working (I also still have an analog phone line, and I won't let the phone company take it away!!)
The first phone I remember was a wooden box on the wall with a black speaker and earpiece hung on the left side. The right side was where the crank was to dial the operator. We were on a party line, and we were two rings and we cranked twice to reach an operator, who would then dial the number of the person you wanted to talk to and then connect you. The operators would also know if you were listening in on the party line and come on and say, who else is on this line? That kids, is how old I am.
Crazy remembering getting excited for when the phone or doorbell rang, now it is soooo opposite.
"Is it her?" "Is it her?" "Please be her." "Hello?" (In the coolest voice ever). "Hi Nanny."
With the cord that got tangled, but would reach from the wall across the kitchen!
Who remembers stretching the cord into the closet or garage for a private conversation\
I'd go back to this in a heartbeat and carry a secret cell for emergencies, instead of people thinking I'm at their beck and call 24 hours day...and then getting mad because I was busy doing something else and chose to ignore the phone.
This is a modern phone. I had a heavy black one with a wheel to dial with.
And if it rang during dinner, every time it was MCI trying to sell you a long distance plan.
you also didn't have telemarketers and scam artists calling five times a day.
And when you were done you would, are you ready for this? “Hang up” the phone!”
I remember everyone having their one rotary dial phone on its own table with the phone directory (Yellow Pages) right below it in the hallway. This is before the home having kitchen or bedroom phones (Extention phones as we called them back in the day).
I remember having an old fashioned free standing dial phone when I was a child Also a wall phone later on.
And you put a extra long cord so you could walk around the house...
Lol who remembers trying to stretch and twist that phone cord while they’re parents were talking on it , aggravating them to no end lol
Growing up we had a party line. 🐴 could listen in on each others calls. Gossipers heaven
Some of us remember party lines. The phone line/number was shared by about 10 neighbors. And while I don't miss the rotary phone I do miss slamming down the receiver. They were like tanks, indestructible. Broke a couple Nokias slamming the down and just stopped with smart phones.
I remember when we had party lines. Sometimes the phone rang and we didn't answer because it was for the neighbors.
Yep. My sister had a black one and at home we had a beige one. My sis said black is beautiful and I said beige is better. This went on for years.
I remember that never having to run around the room looking for my phone.
LAX has one of those in the Delta baggage area, but it's a nice stainless one. No one uses it.
I remember standing at the phone calling my dad after he would get off work to talk to him about my day back when he'd moved out because of my birthing unit. Simpler times.
There's still a phone jack on the kitchen wall where one of these was mounted. Now I have a cordless base plugged in there for all the handsets in the house.
We had that phone in that color but rotary. Also, our wall paper was a stylized daisy print with a white background
I'd always get my cord wrapped around the chair legs while I was kicking it up and resting my feet's on the table while my parents were out omg if they were home I would have been slaughtered like a cow lol but yeah I miss it something about a classic wall phone even the wireless I loved getting on the line and telling my brother or sister I've got two seconds to get off the dang phone...☝️😶🌫️🧐🤨
I was 12 years old when we got one for the family farm. The Manitoba Phone truck came into the farm yard because some neighbor ladies were trying to get ahold of Mom to ask her if she could make fried chicken for a community pot luck. It turned out our old rotary phone had died on us.
And the cord was 20-25' so you could roam around the room doing chores while chatting.
And you had to get the extra long cord. Otherwise, it wouldn't reach from the kitchen all the way into the living room.
I had an extra long handset cord so I could talk while sitting on my living room couch.
A wall phone with a hundred and fifty foot dangling spiral cord that you spent longer untangling than you did paying attention to whoever was on the other end of the phone with you. 🥹
50 foot phone cord! Twisted and tangled down to 25! Yes I mean 50 feet between the base and the handset, anything on the floor in the living room would get swept up and dragged behind me.
AND IF YOUR PARENTS YELLIN AT YA NOT TO BE ON THERE FOREVER, THE PHONE CORD COULD BE A REMINDER, WRAPPED AROUND YOUR NECK!
I remember having a rotary dial telephone, when the push button phone was introduced, it was amazing and state of the art back then
My dad was pissed with my mom because she paid extra for a non-party phone line and he didn't see the point.
During a sleepover my friends and I crank called some dude. He *69 back. We lost our styff that day
I still have one, well kind of. So many people commented on it I took the phone off and hung a picture over the outlet thingie last year . Kept the phone, might put it back up.
We not only had that exact phone, qw even had a party line when we first moved into my parents ranch... where you had to check if one of your neighbors was using the phone line before you made a call! If they were, you had to wait till they were done to make your call. It was fancy if they had a way to ring the line to let folks know when they got done!!!
I always died a little when I had to call to a friend and parent picked up
I have one like this on my kitchen wall, - only in pink and with a dial!
Having 3 sisters, you needed that nice long cord. I'd take the phone all the way down the stairs into the basement closet to talk to boys.
It was safe to answer because about the worst thing that would happen is the caller would ask if your refrigerator was running r if you'd like to subscribe to the local newspaper.
Again, my mothers is still attached to the wall. She is rather worried though because the phone provider is going totally digital very shortly and she will need to have a router fitted. I’m dreading it because I’ll probably be the poor mug that has to show her how to use WiFi. I am not a patient educator.
My parents still have one hanging in their kitchen. And despite having a handset with caller ID if they're in the kitchen and it rings they answer it without knowing who it is. And 90% of the time it's spam callers anyway. No one ever really calls them on the landline anymore
I still do. It's a closed loop that goes out to my backyard shed. When either phone is picked up the other one rings.
Ours was still on the wall, with no landline, until a couple years ago.
Whenyom was on the phone, my little brother would do things he wasn't supposed to just out of reach of the phone cord.
And the cord that could reach from one end of the downstairs to the other. Listening in from another handset in a different room. Moving from place to place to try and have a 'private' conversation while everyone else in the house was yelling at you to stop getting in the way with the twisted cord and/or to get off the god bless-ed phone this instant!!
Still didn't like picking up the phone though. If it was a telemarketer, you wouldn't know it was a unmarked number and be forced to talk to them
I grew up with "party lines". Kids think thats terrible. Guess having to listen to random private calls in public places is better!
As someone who grew up with one of these in their home, the fact that I now refuse to answer any calls from numbers I don't recognise, is kinda ironic!
*ring ring* ring ring* Me:hello The phone:Do you like scary movies?
My first push-button phone (not rotary dial) was in 1980 and I had a super-long extension cord so I could carry the phone around the house. There was only 1 phone since I lived alone, and it was like having a cell phone for convenience.
In much of the world, aging is actually celebrated. In Korea, when one turns 60, they will have a special party called a hwangap. Part of this celebration’s history comes from the fact that many people in the pre-modern era did not even reach the age of 60. As a result, Koreans have also started to celebrate “Gohi” or “Chilsun” when they turn 70 and “Palsun” when they reach the venerable age of 80.

One reason to make your peace with aging is that it can actually help you live longer. A positive self-perception of health in old age appears to be directly correlated with longer lifespans. So if living as long as possible is really important, then it’s almost as vital to believe it will happen. Worrying just wastes time for little-to-no gain.

It Was Much More Rewarding. I Miss Researching And Enjoy Reading My Encyclopedias!
After my parents bought me a set of Encyclopedias at the age of 11, I announced that I would no longer be going to school since I could now look up anything I needed to know!
Memory plays just as important a part. We tend to have a lot of what scientists call “flashbulb” memories, itself a reference to older cameras that would provide lighting with a bright flash from a lightbulb. These are instances, moments, and events that feel “burned” into our memories. Traumatic or important events are often featured, particularly if it was something shared with many people. Witnesses of 9/11 would be an example of “flashbulb” memories.
And When A Person Gets Older.....you Lose Them, In More Ways Than One! Lol
Tin Kaleidoscope Toy
Yep, And My Dad Would Criticize My Teachers Handwriting For Being Illegible!
We do tend to remember our firsts, as they set the standards and expectations for most events. First kisses, first days of school, and first day on a job all feature here, even though subsequent ones will often be forgotten very quickly. Try to imagine a specific day in fourth grade in November and most of us will draw a blank, even though in the abstract we have an idea of what could have happened and what the classroom may have looked like.
Hey Boo Boo!
I Did It Way Back When When I Was In School And Then Made Them For My Kids!
Pictures That Make You Feel Old
You got dropped off? We would take ourselves there by bus or bike. (From about 10 years old.)
That being said, memories do degrade with the passing of time. Most “unimportant” memories disappear after the first couple of days unless there is a reminder or we convince ourselves to keep track of something. So if many of the things seen here are the first time you’ve thought of them in years, that’s a normal function of how our memory works. This “whiplash” of seeing something the brain has purposefully forgotten is also why these images might make someone feel “old.”

Drying My Hands In A Public Restroom, 1975
Of course, a lack of attention also plays a part. If you stop to carefully look around you, there are a lot of dates. Colors, shapes, textures. Remember, every place you have ever gone has an abundance of information that, thankfully, our brain filters out. It’s enough to know in the abstract that most walls have some sort of coat of paint without systematically categorizing every wall you have ever seen. It could be a cool party trick, but realistically you would just get overwhelmed.
Remember These Days ?

The Good Old Days Puts A Big Smile On My Face
Plus, as you age you take in a lot of new memories and information. Like building on top of a ruin, new memories “push back” older ones and make them harder to retain. The deeper these ideas are buried, the “older” one feels when they are rediscovered through the images here, or visiting a once-familiar place after a long time.
And The Sound Of Music Too!!
Just A Random Question
Can still find cans that open like this now. Corned beef comes to mind.
Pictures That Make You Feel Old
What also causes these feelings of “being old” is the fact that, despite what we often think, our memories are not actually recordings. We can misremember all sorts of details, falsify memories, and remove or add things that never actually happened. This only becomes apparent when we encounter images such as these that serve as a reminder that a lot of things we think we remember don’t actually look the way they did.
Kurt Russell And Goldie Hawn...40 Years Together

But don’t despair, just because you can’t recall the precise model of a neighbor's car doesn’t mean that this memory is lost forever. Somehow, somewhere, you will probably come across something that will jog your memory into place, and you’ll get that little rush as a bit of your past rematerializes in your head. So if you are trying to unlock as many memories as possible, Bored Panda has got you covered, check out our other articles here and here.

The only washer my mom ever had. When her original one finally gave up on her, we thought, "oh good, finally we'll get an automatic washer!" Nope, she bought a new one like this, except hers had a square tub. She believed it got clothes cleaner and she'd put her favorite tunes on the old GE radio, and enjoyed her "alone time" while spending hours in the laundry room, washing clothes for a family of eight. With the exception of during winter, she always hung everything outside on the clothesline.

A lot of these are still around. Should change the title to nostalgia or something.
Yeah. I could do without the age baiting. I'm here for the memories, not the put-downs for the whippersnappers.
Load More Replies...I'm Gen Z and I've done/had/seen most of these??? Hello?? I don't get these articles
To be fair, most of them has become pop culture icons, so yeah of course most people would've done/had/seen them. Like the Flintstones, it's not aired anymore, but everybody knows them. Or the stupid alarm clock, it's not being sold anymore, but since EVERYBODY had them, the chance that you've seen them is pretty huge.
Load More Replies...It was a delight to see examples even 5 to 10 years older than I am. I'm not so old after all. Also a delight that most of these are international, not just limited to the USA.
Well, this was a waste of time. Did you mean: when I see these things, I think back to my youth? Or did you mean things that don't exist anymore (because epic fail)? Or, like the pictures of Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell and Cheech and Chong make me feel old? I don't get it: I looked at the FB page from which the "writers" compiled this mess, and there were so many choices that were actually true to the theme--how hard did they have to search for this mess?
The best part about a lot of these is they span a decent amount of generations. I’m a millennial and some of the older stuff (rotary phone, the crib, the electric counter top grill) were a regular part of my childhood because those products lasted so long. Also my dad worked for the phone company which explains why we had a working rotary phone at home into the 90’s.
Not my parent's house. Never one spec of paneling. Ever. Way to go, mom and dad!!!

61, and remember almost all of these. Life was better in many ways back then, but not in all ways.
Mimeograph! Microfiche! Card catalog! Dewey decimal system! Pop-o-matic bubble! "Calgon, Take me away!" "Ancient Chinese secret huh?" Lawn Darts! Mean Jo Green! "Where's the beef!?"

I'm not American, and I remember most of these things from my childhood (except the bubblegum and the TV ones). I grew up in Africa and spent childhood holidays in England.
