There’s always something people have demonized. First it was fat, then it was food additives, and lately it has become sugar. But things people see as evil don't end with our diet.
Other commonly disregarded stuff may have to do with music, like the controversial band known as Nickelback or going to psychological therapy, or not liking animals like rats, tarantulas, and snakes.
We rarely reflect on why specific things cause us such adverse emotions, so this viral thread may give us some perspective. The simple yet thought-provoking question “What doesn't need the hate it gets?” was asked by Redditor u/Alexdoesthedo, and it has clearly produced some very illuminating responses.

The rain. Rain is f**king awesome. It feeds all the plantlife, makes puddles, and my personal favourite, at night time the rain reflects light and makes even traffic lights look f**king amazing. Jesus I love rain.
Atheists. Most of us are nice, sensible good people just like you, we just happen to have different views on religion. Just like any religion, of course there are extremists that give the group a bad name, and the rest of us look down on them and don't support how they act.
Pineapple on pizza. It’s delicious, and if you hate it don’t s**t on people who like it.
Reading.
Even those who read scoff at what others read and it's not necessary.
Reading overall is good for the brain and memory. Comic books, magazines about cars or fishing, romance novels, old classics, it's all reading.
There's no need to feel shame or shame someone for what they read.
Enjoying cartoons as an adult.
Good content is good content and looking back at the cartoons I loved now and then. I do have superior tastes.
Child please. I'm approaching retirement age and I never stopped watching cartoons.
Therapy. It's never a bad thing but I definitely still know people who are firmly against or see it as a sign of weakness.
People who want to live a basic, "normal" or "boring" life. From all generations, I am constantly hearing locals/normies being made fun of for not wanting a ~fancier~ lifestyle but like... Why does that matter? Besides, just having a roof overhead is luxurious to to some people. Let others live the lives they want to.
Rats. They're some of the funniest, most affectionate and intelligent small pets, with a ton of personality, who actually enjoy engaging with people.
They get a terrible reputation for carrying disease or being aggressive- which is just not true for domestic rats. Growing up I had almost every common pet rodent you can think of, and hands down I'd pick a rat over a hamster any day.
Cats. Many people I know absolutely despise them because they think they cant love you the way some dogs can, or they remind you of the stereotype "crazy cat person" or the whole "they're all aggressive/bitey/scratchy" thing. Once I had both dogs and cats (and reptiles!) in my house - and though I love both, cats tended to speak a little louder to me. I'm part of a TNR company and ended up raising one of the cats I caught while searching for my missing cat last month and realized how sweet they can be if you take the time to earn their trust and give them space when it's asked for.
Bra straps showing. Like what? Why does it make you mad? It's fabric. And if I'm not mistaken, you're covered in it on the daily.
Sleeping with stuffed animals. You’re never too old for that.
The North American Opossum. They're docile unless threatened, and I think they are endearingly cute. They perform a great service by eating tons of pesky insects, like ticks. Added bonus, they are almost entirely immune to rabies.
Teenage girls who are obsessed with something (a pop star, a movie, a book etc). Let people enjoy things.
Broccoli. Steam it and melt a little Smart Balance on it. Yummy. Your parents didn't know how to make it. It's arguably the healthiest food you can eat, at least in the top ten.
Small pieces baked in the oven with olive oil, salt, and pepper, until the edges are crispy...omg, delicious
Steamed brocoli is delicious, even without anything added. As with many foods, it is all about the right preparation.
YES!..Yeeeeees!! I love boiled or steamed broccoli...my two kids love to eat them with nothing..no oil or butter..they are quite sweet with a particular texture , a lot of vegetable have some particular taste (for example bruxelles sprouts sometime are bitter ) but broccoli are awesome!!!!
Load More Replies...I was the weird little kid who loved broccoli and Brussels sprouts. I called the broccoli “little trees” and the sprouts “little cabbages”. However I still refuse to eat beets, which were my mother’s favorites. Same goes for limp canned spinach. My mother used to mix chopped up hard boiled egg and bacon bits into it to tempt me, and would end up throwing out the spinach after I picked out the egg and bacon. Blech!
I was exactly the same, they are still trees and baby cabbages to this day as for limp spinach, noooo!
Load More Replies...Shaoxing rice wine, garlic, soy sauce and some coriander stir fried, it's an amazingly versatile vegetable, I've always liked it. :)
This as well. Man, the BP community really know how to whip up some serious broccoli.
Load More Replies...I think raw veggies are totally undeserving of hate!
Load More Replies...My local Indian restaurant does something to the broccoli that's indescribably delicious. It's roasted & mixed with other veggies but the seasoning. Wow. I was thinking of getting a job there just long enough to get the recipe. Oh, man.
Nope, sorry but nope, its disgusting no matter what you camouflage it with.
A lot of veggies are delicious if only given a chance. I grew up eating frozen veggies from a bag which are horrendous (well they were back then). Once I discovered fresh veggies, my life was chanced. Broccoli, asparagus and zucchini are some of my faves.
Why would you take a perfectly good vegetable and pour fake butter crap on it?
I love it, but . . . turns out it's one of the few things I'm allergic to . . . .
Steam it and add a pat of butter and a splash of vinegar. You'll never go back.
Brocooli is good just boiled, as you long as you don't boil it for too long.
I actually caused broccoli to be my bf's favourite vegetable. He doesn't like anything mushy - soft/cooked veggies or fruit, and I didn't know he hadn't had an uncooked broccoli before. So I served it once and he was hell surprised how good it was on its own that it's his favourite now. :D
It is fake butter. Supposed to be a healthier alternative that is dairy free and made from olive oil, I believe. I've never tried it because I love real butter.
Load More Replies...i love broccoli stems that i see a lot of people throw out. I do not like the weird bumpy texture of the florets that most other people seem to prefer.
If you hate a vegetable, it may be because you aren't preparing it right!
Steamed broccoli with nothing added. It's refreshing and healthy. You may not be used to the taste at first, but once you calm your mind down and savour it, the subtle flavours slowly make their presence felt, and I love it!
Broccoli doesn't have *subtle* flavours when steaming it... :D
Load More Replies...Poor Dad was a Depression kid. Broccoli was only ever boiled into grey mush. He will throw it across the room if you put it on his plate. I tell him I'll save him from that yummy green veggie!
It has nothing to do with "parents didn't know how to make it." There's a compound in broccoli that not everyone can taste, but for those who can, it tastes bitter to them. Other veggies that have this reaction in people are cauliflower, bok choy, and Brussels sprouts.
Unless you have hypothyroidism like me. Then max 1/2 cup a day every once in a while and cooked. I actually love broccoli and effort to eat healthy. This sucks.
id pick broccoli over candy any day even a small bit of candy makes me dizzy
LOVE broccoli and cauliflower actually most vegetables...including brussel sprouts lol
I love it. Roasting it in the oven is great - makes it kind of sweet.
I’ve loved it since I was five years old. I’ve never had trouble eating my vegetables. But I also hate popcorn and butterfinger candy, so my sister still thinks I’m insane.
My mother's generation (she is 98 now) boiled veggies until almost grey. It took years for me to try some vegetables due to how disgusting they were when I was growing up. Broccoli was one, not as healthy as above but I like a sprinkle of cheddar over top.
i used to hate broccoli in 3rd grade for no reason, now I'm eating bunches of it whenever it's at the table!
I'm realizing my parents (bless their hearts) didn't know how to make a lot of food items tasty....
I can't and don't eat any brassicas as they flare up IBS for me. I don't eat any leaf veg but have no problem with root vegetables, peas, beans (except Kidney Beans) onions, mushrooms.
Use butter, not erzats. Butter on steamed broccoli is great. "Smart Balance", or any other butter "substitiute", turns any wonderful dish into garbage.
Smart Balance's ingredients sound disgusting. What's wrong with butter or a good olive oil? Why does anyone need to mix it with canola, palm, flaxseed and FISH oils? Not to talk about everything else...
Steam them until almost ready. Then put it i a owen safe dish, put on some salt, pepper and a good sprinkling of the cheese of your choise (I recomend something like Parmesan). Then put it under the grill to melt the cheese. Serve with compliments of your choise.
Broccoli is all about preparation. Same goes for other vegetables. One wrong move and it tastes bad, but with some time, garlic, and spices, broccoli is absolutely incredible.
Awesome with cheese, beef, or both. Pretty good as a vessel for sauces and dips.
I eat broccoli several times a week. Broccoli, roasted with garlic and olive oil is amazing.
Peel the stems, cut into strips, then enjoy them with hummus or ranch dressing or whatever dip you like. They're better than celery sticks IMHO. Or dice them up for stir fry or fried rice. I learned recently that the stems are as nutritious as the crowns, and mourn for all those I composted in the past!
What you’re actually doing, is altering the taste. You don’t like it either.
What?? That's ridiculous. Just because you alter foods doesn't mean you don't like them. Most meals people eat are altered somehow. You make quiche, you alter the taste of eggs by adding bacon, cheese, salt etc. You make coffee but add sugar, you are altering the taste but coffee is still very much liked, you have fish but squeeze lemon on it, doesn't mean you don't like it just because you altered.
Load More Replies...I serve steamed or baked broccoli & cauliflower nearly every week. A little butter & salt, or some melted cheese on occasion... if I'm feeling festive. ;-)
Agree. I didn't like vegetables growing up because no one made it well. I make excellent veggies.
I love broccoli ... cooked, baked, fried made into soup, ect. It's delicious
I loooove sauteed brocoli with a bit of sambal oelek. I'm thrilled when brocoli is on sale!
Raw florets with vinaigrette and bacon (or veggie substitute) bits dressing. SO GOOD!
honestly I started eating it for the first time and i actually really like it! especially with cheese
They're the best in any kind of sauce because the head part soaks up the sauce and you get a little flavour bomb every time you bite into one!
I had company many years ago, they brang a teenager from NYC , I made beef n broccoli stir fry, he didn’t want to eat, we asked him why, he said he’s never seen broccoli his whole life, and wouldn’t eat what he doesn’t know??? Poor kid I actually felt bad for him
What is smart balance? I like my broccoli streamed with a little gravy.
i love broccoli, they are delicious baked in some butter with a bit of salt and pepper, mmm...
Don't steam it! Soggy veggies are gross. Saute it with some fresh minced garlic and some salt and pepper. Both my kids love it that way and broccoli is their favorite veggie
Muslims, they are really misunderstood everywhere.
I'm in favor of practicing any religion you like, but Islam is one of the most intolerant religions to ever exist. There is no Muslim-majority country where being gay isn't hazardous to your health. There isn't a muslim-majority country that isn't a hellhole in regards to women's rights. Islam is incompatible with liberalism, the same way 14th century Catholicism is incompatible with liberalism. If you want to follow Islam, as a liberal I say you do you, but don't expect me to turn a blind eye to the religion's social problems.
Homeless people. Austin, TX just reinstated a ban on public camping/sitting/laying down, with zero allocation for actually helping the homeless population.
Sharks. They're just a well designed killing machine and the chances of them killing you are super low. Orcas and dolphins are actually "meaner" if you want to look at them in a human way, they'll purposely mess with you or hurt you. Sharks might just bite you on accident.
Hyenas. Most unfairly villainized and maligned animal in the world all because of some stupid Disney movie. They are not scavengers at all they hunt 90% of their prey and lions steal food off of them far more than they steal off lions. They are highly intelligent predators with an equally important role to play in the ecosystem.
Teachers.
I can personally confirm that I was a piece of work in grade school - then high school. And it wasn't because of teachers - it was because of me.
So true! Living with a teacher every day, and believe me, it's not only the kids, but also the parents, the school board,....
Snakes. They are awesome pets and the super dangerous ones don't want anything to do with you. I can't stand people killing snakes they find. To me its like killing a stray dog you find. Just call animal control.
Snakes are so cool, we used to have a pet Murray darling python. Sadly she passed away a few years ago.
Trans people. Just like many other minorities, most people get little exposure to them other then what they hear and see online. Aka the trans freakouts and anti trans pages aren’t too realistic, along with the tumblr 30,000 genders people, “real” (not because of a coping mechanism or fetish, etc but fr like born that way, ) trans people irl are quite normal.
GMOs. Humans have been slowly doing that since we started cultivating crops, now we can just do it quicker. And there are millions of people who rely on GMO crops to not starve to death.
It's just Monsanto GMO seeds. 1 generation so they can keep selling them, and they don't care if their product does get into organic fields nearby. Losing natural, unmodified seeds to Monsanto's greed is terrifying.
Brussels Sprouts. You can do so much with them! Just stop boiling the hell out of them.
People with the Karen haircut who are actually normal and chill.
TV shows made specifically for toddlers. They are toddlers. It's all colors and shapes and being excited over simple things. That's what toddlers are about. YOU don't need to watch the show. It's not for you.
Nickleback - I'm not a fan, but it's just kind of generic rock music that you are in no way forced to listen to.
Billie Eilish. I don't know what it was that made people go "eeeew, BiLlIe EiLiSh" but come on. She's an interesting person and her music is genuinely good. I'm not one for forcing artists on people, I just don't get when a relatively innocuous musician gets that level of hate.
And while I'm at it: Taylor Swift writing about relationships. Just about every artist in existence has either written about their relationships at least once, or usually write about love/relationships, either through experience or generalization. Why is it okay for people like Ed Sheeran, John Mayer, or Ariana Grande to write about their relationships without much uproar, but when Taylor Swift does it? Sheesh.
Body pillows.
There's no law saying you have to put something sexy on it there's plain colored pillowcases for them literally everywhere.
They. Help. You. Sleep. Gud.
How can people hate body pillows? I have one covered in a plain white sheet and it helped me have the best sleep I've ever had. Honest to god, I recommend everyone to have one.
Veganism. We just don't want innocent animals to get hurt yet we get mocked for it all the time.
People do not hate the veganism, we hate the aggressive, "only we can save the world, you f***ng animal killer"-like evangelist vegans.
Anyone showcasing genuine passion and hobbies on social media.
Boy bands/ any music where the target audience is teens/young women. people need to stop assuming that anything that is liked by that demographic is stupid.
I don't think people hate boy bands per se. I think they hate the cynical manufacturing of them by music companies. 'OK, so we've got the super handsome one, the goofy one, the sensitive one, the blond one...' 'Can they sing?' 'Sing? who cares?'
Kristen Stewart--she's just socially awkward during interviews! She's a decent actress. People freak out that she's not super emotionally expressive... Some people just aren't!
Except an actress should be able to ACT AS IF they have emotions. Especially in movies....
People who lack basic human compassion. It's a sentiment that we have lost, at least in the US, and it makes for some seriously cold f**king people. Worse, it's more socially acceptable to be a cold-a-- prick than a compassionate human being. We need to fix that s**t if we want to have a functioning society...
I have battled this notion for decades. I repeatedly hear how people will "knock out" someone who so much as cuts in line from them. Or how "I just tell people how it is" without the need for tact. The entire world feels it is admirable and correct to forget about kindness, that being a bully is strong. No, it is far more difficult to be kind and concede even in the face of adversity. If you were to get slapped on the face, and then offer your other cheek to be slapped as well, you are deemed a coward or a door mat or "you should stand up for yourself". I once was punched in the nose at a dance club because the guy who asked me to dance had a girlfriend there, I didn't know. I recounted this story to my friends, and told them I didn't punch her back...100% of them said that I should have hit her..I want to know why? What in the hell would that accomplish? I know who I am, I know I am strong and I know that compassion, tolerance and kindness is what makes me strong.
Nuclear powerplants....
People freak out because of the radiation but almost everyone is oblivious to the amount of cr*p a coal or oil powerplant dumps in the atmosphere.
Nuclear waste is relatively easy to store and modern nuceal powerplants have good safety records.
"nuclear waste is relatively easy to store"? We need ways to store it for 100 000 + years, before the radiation reaches safe levels. The human race has never stored anything that long. We don't even know how we will make people aware of the danger in the future, since no language will survive that long.
Furries. Well most of them, they're actually pretty nice people.
Funko Pops. People absolutely hate them even though they're like $10 vs $100 for an actual figurine. What other people collect should be of no concern to you just because you "don't get it". People collected Beanie Babies back in the 90's for no reason and everyone was cool with it. Funko Pop's are the same thing.
There was tons of hate for beanie babies and their collectors. Most of what I see regarding dislike for funko pops is ire towards the producer of the entertainment for taking such a lazy option for merchandise instead of somehow "awarding" dedicated fans. Note, this is explanation, not opinion, you can pry my Harry Potter funko from my cold dead hands.
Indians. Yes a proportion of men are horrible here, and there's crimes against women and all but not all of us are Simps or predators. We are 1.4 billion, so even if 5% are criminals it's still 70 million people.
Imagine Dragons.
They were the Nickelback of the 2010’s.
It’s time to pass on the torch of hatred for a new overly mediocre band with bland and generic music that all sounds the same.
Seriously? Didn't even know that people hate them. So many fantastic songs ❤
People who work with fossil fuels, My grandad drives a fuel truck for work to deliver fuel and he stops at a gas station and occasionally some A-hole decides to go off and say your polluting the environment and your making it worse, people like my grandad do the job because it provides food for the family and it’s something they have a lot if experience in, that doesn’t make them the target to bully
The Last Jedi.
And this isn't even that true. Objectively speaking it was a massive success that the vast majority of the audience and critics enjoyed. But the people that hate it seem to think they're the majority in the Star Wars fandom and act both like a smug majority and a defensive minority.
It's a good blockbuster movie that has great actors, themes, cinematography, and effects. Sure it has some plot conveniences and physics bugs but for the love of the Force you'd think the people that point those out had never seen a movie with plot conveniences or physics bugs before or consider a completely tight plot or perfect adherence to space wizard logic to be the most important things in a movie."
"It's become such a toxic thing because a lot of the people that hate it hate it with a radioactive passion that ruins Star Wars discussion for everyone else (8 hour video on how TLJ is a cinematic abomination, really?)
That's not even getting in to the people that sent the actress that plays Rose death threats. Though I think every sane person that has an opinion on TLJ can agree that those people are insane children.
I guess you have to be part of the fandom, most I ever heard in regards to this movie is "it's a new Star Wars movie". I've seen it, I remember thinking that it was way too long (nearing the end I couldn't remember the beginning), and I don't really recall that much from it.
MSG. It’s like salt but on crack and exploding with flavor.
I can't believe I'm saying this but... Cyberpunk 2077.
I'm not going to defend the state of the game at launch at all because it was absolutely horrible. But I've noticed the conversation has trended from "The game underneath is good but it's technically f**ked up" to "the game even when fixed is still just half a game".
I know people were expecting a lot more RPG elements, but IMO the game when it works is a pretty good game and I feel like a lot of people just want to bag on that game that haven't even tried it.
And I say that as someone who thinks The Witcher 3 is super overrated and wasn't expecting to even like CP2077.
I dislike it because I was looking forward to it for so long and then they made it 1st person only and I’ll never be able to play it without throwing up, I dislike it because it broke my heart. :.( (yeahyeah I know about the mods)
Speaking as a comic nerd, Superman. Maybe a niche thing but he's either dismissed as a boring one note OP god with no substance who can just beat his way out of any situation, or a boring cornball with no edge to him. Both very incredibly wrong, for different reasons.
i prefer jane foster and if you don't know who that is too bad for you
The Star Wars prequels.
The Prequels were terrible. They turned the mystical Jedi into basically the Gestapo for the Republic. the Jedi are a police force that have no oversight, can execute someone they suspect of heresy without a trial (not that heresy should be a death sentence). A Jedi makes an order for million (billions?) of soldier clones AND NOBODY BATTED AN EYE.
Fortnite as a game, the community deserves the hate. Fortnite’s premise is interesting and creative mode can lead to amazing results. The community though...
What part of the Fortnite community? I would consider myself a member as I play nearly ever day, what did we do wrong?!
TikTok. Sometime it does, but most of the time it doesn’t.
I've learned a lot from TikTok, like products, hacks etc. It's like every other tool, it's the way you use it.
People who text one sentence at a time send Because I don't think of one big paragraph and then send it to you send I live in the moment and text how I think I'm carrying on the conv when new ideas appear in my head send And sending them straight away so I have your attention as if I'm talking to you send As I think you're likely to click off after reading one sentence so I try to keep you there send I don't plan my text it comes out random so I'm typing as I think- like I said. Who does walls of texts anymore? Most don't read or forget to reply. send I love receiving texts this way.
Ugh. People who use 10 texts to say what could be said in one drive me nuts. I have better things to do than tend to my phone for half an hour while you send me a single smiley face emoji or a thumbs up. Just because you have nothing better to do with your time doesn't mean I'm not up to my elbows in washing up water, or trying to read without constant stupid interruptions.
I think a lot of people hate these things because media and the internet tell them to.
I'll add introverts. It's okay to be an introvert, you don't have to be an extrovert, introverts can be fun, too an it took me years to realize that.
I love my introvert friends! I'm a socially awkward extrovert, but I'm a heck of a lot more outgoing than many of my friends.

I will add: innocently staring at people shouldn't be that bad. We are visual and curious creatures and sometimes we just want to look with wonder or appreciation at someone else, but it's always perceived as creepy/perverted, and unfortunately it often is. I often check out someone's hair, shoes, backpack decals, facial structure, clothes etc. but terrified that I'll be "caught" appreciating their style or something. For this same reason, I never compliment strangers the way that I want to.
Now you need to take into account that the other person doesn't know your thoughts. Many do stare with creepy intentions. And also that no everyone is always waiting for compliments. Having some empathy about that would make it easier to understand how it's not appreciated to stare. Also, what you personally want should never be at the cost of discomfort of another.

All of these that where mentioned just remind me how great it is that people enjoy different things. A lot of things I wouldnt learn or hear about if someone didnt introduce me to it. What a boring world it would be if we were all the same, acted the same and liked the same things. Love and embrace our differences but try not to be an asshole if someone is not like you or likes things you dont.

But if the reason you dont like furries is because you think that kind of stuff is kinda odd and you're just not into it, you're fine, have a nice day.
I will also add: Lilly Singh. Why is she getting all this hate on the internet? She's worked hard for her success, and anyone who is insecure enough about themselves to criticize her humour, doesn't deserve to watch her videos. As long as what you're doing is not hurting anyone it's fine.
I worked as an hourly worker in some chemical plants & refineries... I got a bachelor's degree in humanities... It was so useless that I couldn't get a job selling insurance on commission with it... so I went to work as a workin' man... I was hated everywhere I worked because the workers didn't have any education beyond high school, and they were jealous and offended that I would dare to work in "their plant". They would tell me to my face that I was a fool for working there with a degree. I got tired of telling them that I was making three or four times what I could get with the useless degree...
I got my AA in social science and humnaities becuase after basic training and tech school I only needed 6 classes to finish it. I went on later and got a bachelors and masters degree in computer programming and IT. Most of the AA was the general ed stuff that all degrees require. Not a useless degree.

I would add K-Pop, J-Pop, and C-Pop as well! I enjoy this music and I'm teased and judged for being interested in different cultures? Same when I listen to any music in Spanish or French. I'm always judged for listening to different languages and I don't understand why. I showed a friend an English version of a K-Pop song and they SERIOUSLY enjoyed it, but when I showed them the original, they were disgusted that I had "tricked her into listening to that stuff." It makes me really upset that fans are teased and judged for listening to this. It's our musical taste, and no one is asking you to be a fan, so please just respect the fact that WE enjoy this. Thank you.
uhh you see there are no problems when it comes to k-pop its just the fandom has toxic stans :(

Load More Replies...You know what should be on this list? People who like signs like "Live, Laugh, Love". I like to think I'm a pretty edgy, cool, artistic, individualistic, and self-made woman. OK, so why do I get made fun of if I want a gd inspirational quote in my home.?! There is nothing "basic" about me. Ya'll are judgmental a-holes. lol
