There’s always something people have demonized. First it was fat, then it was food additives, and lately it has become sugar. But things people see as evil don't end with our diet.
Other commonly disregarded stuff may have to do with music, like the controversial band known as Nickelback or going to psychological therapy, or not liking animals like rats, tarantulas, and snakes.
We rarely reflect on why specific things cause us such adverse emotions, so this viral thread may give us some perspective. The simple yet thought-provoking question “What doesn't need the hate it gets?” was asked by Redditor u/Alexdoesthedo, and it has clearly produced some very illuminating responses.

The rain. Rain is f**king awesome. It feeds all the plantlife, makes puddles, and my personal favourite, at night time the rain reflects light and makes even traffic lights look f**king amazing. Jesus I love rain.
Atheists. Most of us are nice, sensible good people just like you, we just happen to have different views on religion. Just like any religion, of course there are extremists that give the group a bad name, and the rest of us look down on them and don't support how they act.
Pineapple on pizza. It’s delicious, and if you hate it don’t s**t on people who like it.
Reading.
Even those who read scoff at what others read and it's not necessary.
Reading overall is good for the brain and memory. Comic books, magazines about cars or fishing, romance novels, old classics, it's all reading.
There's no need to feel shame or shame someone for what they read.
Enjoying cartoons as an adult.
Good content is good content and looking back at the cartoons I loved now and then. I do have superior tastes.
Child please. I'm approaching retirement age and I never stopped watching cartoons.
Therapy. It's never a bad thing but I definitely still know people who are firmly against or see it as a sign of weakness.
People who want to live a basic, "normal" or "boring" life. From all generations, I am constantly hearing locals/normies being made fun of for not wanting a ~fancier~ lifestyle but like... Why does that matter? Besides, just having a roof overhead is luxurious to to some people. Let others live the lives they want to.
Rats. They're some of the funniest, most affectionate and intelligent small pets, with a ton of personality, who actually enjoy engaging with people.
They get a terrible reputation for carrying disease or being aggressive- which is just not true for domestic rats. Growing up I had almost every common pet rodent you can think of, and hands down I'd pick a rat over a hamster any day.
Cats. Many people I know absolutely despise them because they think they cant love you the way some dogs can, or they remind you of the stereotype "crazy cat person" or the whole "they're all aggressive/bitey/scratchy" thing. Once I had both dogs and cats (and reptiles!) in my house - and though I love both, cats tended to speak a little louder to me. I'm part of a TNR company and ended up raising one of the cats I caught while searching for my missing cat last month and realized how sweet they can be if you take the time to earn their trust and give them space when it's asked for.
Bra straps showing. Like what? Why does it make you mad? It's fabric. And if I'm not mistaken, you're covered in it on the daily.
Sleeping with stuffed animals. You’re never too old for that.
The North American Opossum. They're docile unless threatened, and I think they are endearingly cute. They perform a great service by eating tons of pesky insects, like ticks. Added bonus, they are almost entirely immune to rabies.
Teenage girls who are obsessed with something (a pop star, a movie, a book etc). Let people enjoy things.
Broccoli. Steam it and melt a little Smart Balance on it. Yummy. Your parents didn't know how to make it. It's arguably the healthiest food you can eat, at least in the top ten.
Muslims, they are really misunderstood everywhere.
I'm in favor of practicing any religion you like, but Islam is one of the most intolerant religions to ever exist. There is no Muslim-majority country where being gay isn't hazardous to your health. There isn't a muslim-majority country that isn't a hellhole in regards to women's rights. Islam is incompatible with liberalism, the same way 14th century Catholicism is incompatible with liberalism. If you want to follow Islam, as a liberal I say you do you, but don't expect me to turn a blind eye to the religion's social problems.
Homeless people. Austin, TX just reinstated a ban on public camping/sitting/laying down, with zero allocation for actually helping the homeless population.
Sharks. They're just a well designed killing machine and the chances of them killing you are super low. Orcas and dolphins are actually "meaner" if you want to look at them in a human way, they'll purposely mess with you or hurt you. Sharks might just bite you on accident.
Hyenas. Most unfairly villainized and maligned animal in the world all because of some stupid Disney movie. They are not scavengers at all they hunt 90% of their prey and lions steal food off of them far more than they steal off lions. They are highly intelligent predators with an equally important role to play in the ecosystem.
Teachers.
I can personally confirm that I was a piece of work in grade school - then high school. And it wasn't because of teachers - it was because of me.
So true! Living with a teacher every day, and believe me, it's not only the kids, but also the parents, the school board,....
Snakes. They are awesome pets and the super dangerous ones don't want anything to do with you. I can't stand people killing snakes they find. To me its like killing a stray dog you find. Just call animal control.
Snakes are so cool, we used to have a pet Murray darling python. Sadly she passed away a few years ago.
Trans people. Just like many other minorities, most people get little exposure to them other then what they hear and see online. Aka the trans freakouts and anti trans pages aren’t too realistic, along with the tumblr 30,000 genders people, “real” (not because of a coping mechanism or fetish, etc but fr like born that way, ) trans people irl are quite normal.
I never got the hate against trans people (or gay or others). Even if you disagree with their mentality why does it matter? They arent doing anything against you. Let people be.
So many problems could be solved if we just butted out of other people's lives....
Load More Replies...People should stop to hate other people's lifestyle / life choices etc. in general. It does not affect them, so why freak out about it? Just let others be happy!
I realize you think you’re being supportive, but even the kind of language you’re using is exclusionary. Being trans is not a choice or a lifestyle, it’s just who they are and they’re just normal people.
Load More Replies...Maybe I'm clueless, but unless they tell me their trans, they just look like a woman or a man....
Depending on their process and their chioces. Every person is different. Also, it doesn't only exist binary gender people, men or women. There are other possibilities. Aaand, there's a difference in gender expression and gender identity, they can be the same but not always. :)
Load More Replies...I was raised not to judge. I can’t usually see their biological gender behind all the makeup or clothing, but it makes no difference to me. I like people, so I talk to everyone. I just hope they’re happy. Even those who change back and forth. Just so long as you’re happy. I like happy people.
A big part of the problem is that a core part of being transgender flies in the face of how most people live: we do not feel comfortable with the body we were born with. It doesn't match who we are. Some can understand, of course (anyone who experiences dysmorphia will be able to relate), but most never even consider the question of whether they're comfortable with their body in relation to their own identity. And honestly, I suspect that those who are most uncomfortable with transgender are the ones who see something of themselves in it but are not willing or able to confront that.
Body dysmorphia sounds awful. I've heard multiple accounts from people describing the sheer joy and relief they felt when they started living as the gender they identified as, and I think perhaps it was somewhat similar to the relief and sense of "rightness" I felt when I realised I was asexual and that there was really nothing wrong with me after all. You'd have to be a right heartless bastard to deny someone that, and especially when it doesn't affect you in any way shape or form.
Load More Replies...Trans people are some of the most amazing people i've ever met, but get way too much hate. A friend of mine who's such a great person shouldn't have to worry about getting thrown out by his transphobic parents if they find out. These are real people who simply have the courage to be who they are.
You mean like being upset that other lesbians dont want to date you as you have male genitalia?
Load More Replies...There was a girl who was interviewed on CNN recently about her experience detransitioning and the trans community went ballistic. Saying shame on CNN for showing the interview, sending death threats and other obscene messages to the girl in question and trans "journalists" writing articles about how offensive it was. I was horrified when I discover this.
they dont want people knowing the other side of it all.
Load More Replies...It’s like, you have no problem with someone’s name being changed, but a first name and pronouns? Oh THATS TOO HARD??
Some people will memorize 898 Pokémon names and elements then go online to complain someone's first name and pronouns is too hard to keep track of
Load More Replies...I have no idea why people think it’s their business about what a person is in any context that doesn’t involve attacking others in some way, let people express themselves and they will be happier and healthier. The ones that should be addressed is the people who hate because of race, gender, sexuality, religion or disability
I've never understood the "hate" of any group of people. However, you must admit there are some very hateful extremists, that, if you don't necessarily agee with their lifestyle, will vilify you and try to "finish" you. I love people, but I don't always agree with their lifestyle. But then, it's none of my business. But I've had a couple of people who have asked me how and what I think. And when I've answered, they went ballistic because I don't agree with their lifestyle. That doesn't mean I hate the people - I don't hate anyone. It's not my business how they live their life and it's not their business how I choose to live mine.
I think it's a fear factor (along with racism and misogyny). The white, southern, evangelicals cannot stand the thought of things changing and that they aren't in control of everything. It's none of my business what/who someone is. They're just a friend, boss, co-worker, etc. The groups these people are so frantically afraid of are changing things, as well as everyday Americans, and they can't handle it
Someone in my class is trans. Just like everybody else, he is normal!
People are people, just let them be. I don't care about orientation, gender, etc... none of it is going to affect me personally unless someone is a potential partner (speaking of partners, what 2 consenting adults do is no one else's business!).
People shouldn't hate on other people for trying to be who they are inside on the outside. It's stupid and useless and doesn't need to happen.
I don't care, SINCE no one try to change my opinion with laws or stupid rules...
I mean, unless you have mental problems or something, you're a normal person, no matter whether you're lgbtq+ or not
I don't judge people the way the life they want to live. I judge people by they act and how they treat others and treat the most in need.
Help I'm bobbing between queer, bi, and lesbian I dont know help
Why the hell can't we leave people who are different (in reality they are not we are all human). Why can't we all be Man Kind.
I have no understanding of dysmorphia but for those who do experience it, it seems awful. Whatever works to help people live happily and authentically is cool with me.
I don't ask anyone if they are this or that - I associate with them based on their actions. Should be able to get along with anyone - and not get too personal until we are well acquainted.
There are way too many “terms” for the people, for most other people to begin to understand.
As long as it doesn't hurt anyone people can do what they like, be what they want. No one has any right to judge them just as no one has any right to judge you.
My sister, well educated medical professional for the past thirty years or so...insists that LBGTQ is a mental illness. just....what can you do?
Why do people care so much about what other people identify as? It's not affecting you idiot. It would literally be so much easier for everyone involved. Also trans people can be diverse as they want the identity of one does not invalidate the identity of another.
The things shown in the media online are an issue for a lot of groups and communities. The media just LOVES crazy/negative stories and people, so those will always stand out on the internet. The crazier the story, the more people will be interested in it. Gives a lot of groups, like trans people, a bad reputation.
Well Katlyn Jenner did not help that stereotype.... the only thing I have against them, along with anyone else, is don't dictate my words. Don't get pissed if I didn't know. My dad hates it if I call him anything other than dad. Like the guy that starts screaming, I'm not a man... other than snowflake crap like that there cool peps just like any other lifestyle.
I have nothing against trans people, but am always a little nervous for people who say they want to change. I know for a fact that quite a few people pay so much for an operation and then realize they aren’t happy.
The woke culture is here and it is going to take too long for people to get educated. I was just reading about a Virginia teacher who was fired and then reinstated, the problem is he is refusing to teach his students about trans people, because he serves God first. It is a high profile story right now and is going to divide people greatly. People are going to get vile and cruel over this issue. I support the LGBTQ and I support the heterosexuals of this world.
Gender dysphoria is a real mental illness. BUT.... we can't talk about that because it is now considered hate and you will be vilified and canceled!
You are wrong, at least for the United States, Scandinavia, UK, most of western Europe and a lot of other places around the world. Where gender dysphoria is classified by the official medical organizations as a disorder, not an illness. Furthermore, although most trans people experience gender dysphoria, gender dysphoria is a disorder but being transgender is not.
Load More Replies...I think far less people hate the LGBQT community, but are annoyed of how companies feel the need to check "diversity" boxes and force it down the customer's throat. With their whole inclusivity they ruin beloved franchises and get the fanbases angry (Marvel is a prime example). To be clearer: It's not diversity that ruins franchises but the focus on it that effects stories, characters, etc. negativley
But you cannot blame that or take it out on the LGBQT community because sleezy corporations have found a way once again to profit off the suffering of other people. As a part of the community I dont buy in to the whole pride month, I have pride 365 days of the year and I dont run and buy rainbows because some rich business man starts selling them in their shop window.
Load More Replies...In other words: "if you don't live your life in a way that is like mine I think ur terrible and stupid because because your way of living doesnt fit mine and everybody needs to be like me" Maybe ur the one who needs to stop shoving ur lifestyle in peoples faces.
Load More Replies...GMOs. Humans have been slowly doing that since we started cultivating crops, now we can just do it quicker. And there are millions of people who rely on GMO crops to not starve to death.
It's just Monsanto GMO seeds. 1 generation so they can keep selling them, and they don't care if their product does get into organic fields nearby. Losing natural, unmodified seeds to Monsanto's greed is terrifying.
Brussels Sprouts. You can do so much with them! Just stop boiling the hell out of them.
People with the Karen haircut who are actually normal and chill.
TV shows made specifically for toddlers. They are toddlers. It's all colors and shapes and being excited over simple things. That's what toddlers are about. YOU don't need to watch the show. It's not for you.
Nickleback - I'm not a fan, but it's just kind of generic rock music that you are in no way forced to listen to.
Billie Eilish. I don't know what it was that made people go "eeeew, BiLlIe EiLiSh" but come on. She's an interesting person and her music is genuinely good. I'm not one for forcing artists on people, I just don't get when a relatively innocuous musician gets that level of hate.
And while I'm at it: Taylor Swift writing about relationships. Just about every artist in existence has either written about their relationships at least once, or usually write about love/relationships, either through experience or generalization. Why is it okay for people like Ed Sheeran, John Mayer, or Ariana Grande to write about their relationships without much uproar, but when Taylor Swift does it? Sheesh.
Body pillows.
There's no law saying you have to put something sexy on it there's plain colored pillowcases for them literally everywhere.
They. Help. You. Sleep. Gud.
How can people hate body pillows? I have one covered in a plain white sheet and it helped me have the best sleep I've ever had. Honest to god, I recommend everyone to have one.
Veganism. We just don't want innocent animals to get hurt yet we get mocked for it all the time.
People do not hate the veganism, we hate the aggressive, "only we can save the world, you f***ng animal killer"-like evangelist vegans.
Anyone showcasing genuine passion and hobbies on social media.
Boy bands/ any music where the target audience is teens/young women. people need to stop assuming that anything that is liked by that demographic is stupid.
I don't think people hate boy bands per se. I think they hate the cynical manufacturing of them by music companies. 'OK, so we've got the super handsome one, the goofy one, the sensitive one, the blond one...' 'Can they sing?' 'Sing? who cares?'
Kristen Stewart--she's just socially awkward during interviews! She's a decent actress. People freak out that she's not super emotionally expressive... Some people just aren't!
Except an actress should be able to ACT AS IF they have emotions. Especially in movies....

I think a lot of people hate these things because media and the internet tell them to.
I'll add introverts. It's okay to be an introvert, you don't have to be an extrovert, introverts can be fun, too an it took me years to realize that.
I love my introvert friends! I'm a socially awkward extrovert, but I'm a heck of a lot more outgoing than many of my friends.

I will add: innocently staring at people shouldn't be that bad. We are visual and curious creatures and sometimes we just want to look with wonder or appreciation at someone else, but it's always perceived as creepy/perverted, and unfortunately it often is. I often check out someone's hair, shoes, backpack decals, facial structure, clothes etc. but terrified that I'll be "caught" appreciating their style or something. For this same reason, I never compliment strangers the way that I want to.
Now you need to take into account that the other person doesn't know your thoughts. Many do stare with creepy intentions. And also that no everyone is always waiting for compliments. Having some empathy about that would make it easier to understand how it's not appreciated to stare. Also, what you personally want should never be at the cost of discomfort of another.

All of these that where mentioned just remind me how great it is that people enjoy different things. A lot of things I wouldnt learn or hear about if someone didnt introduce me to it. What a boring world it would be if we were all the same, acted the same and liked the same things. Love and embrace our differences but try not to be an asshole if someone is not like you or likes things you dont.

Boomers/Millenials/Karens. Particularly on this site. In fact, let's just ban these terms completely and try to see the individuals around us without prejudice.

FURRIES ARE MISUNDERSTOOD. NOT ALL FURRIES ARE PERVERTS. NOT ALL FURRIES ARE INTO HEAT. NOT ALL FURRIES ARE LGBTQ. HOW DO I KNOW? IM A FURRY. I HAVE MULTIPLE FRIENDS WHO ARE FURRIES. But if the reason you dont like furries is because you think that kind of stuff is kinda odd and you're just not into it, you're fine, have a nice day.
I will also add: Lilly Singh. Why is she getting all this hate on the internet? She's worked hard for her success, and anyone who is insecure enough about themselves to criticize her humour, doesn't deserve to watch her videos. As long as what you're doing is not hurting anyone it's fine.
I worked as an hourly worker in some chemical plants & refineries... I got a bachelor's degree in humanities... It was so useless that I couldn't get a job selling insurance on commission with it... so I went to work as a workin' man... I was hated everywhere I worked because the workers didn't have any education beyond high school, and they were jealous and offended that I would dare to work in "their plant". They would tell me to my face that I was a fool for working there with a degree. I got tired of telling them that I was making three or four times what I could get with the useless degree...
I got my AA in social science and humnaities becuase after basic training and tech school I only needed 6 classes to finish it. I went on later and got a bachelors and masters degree in computer programming and IT. Most of the AA was the general ed stuff that all degrees require. Not a useless degree.
