Photography, if you want to be clinical about it, is a simple transaction: light hits film or a sensor, and whatever falls inside that small rectangle of a viewfinder becomes an image. But the result is rarely clinical. A good photograph can knock the air out of you.

One Reddit thread happened to be an unlikely place to see that in action: a user asked people to share the “hardest” photos from their countries, and the replies came through with exactly that. Take a look below and see which ones live up to the prompt.

This one from the war showing a young mother marching to safety while breastfeeding her daughter. The picture is now a mosaic and the mother and daughter are alright :)

Runner with prosthetic leg wearing Terry Fox Marathon of Hope shirt running on road with cars following, representing impactful country stories.

Wurm42: For anyone not familiar, this is Canadian athlete Terry Fox. After having his right leg amputated due to cancer, he started the "Marathon of Hope," trying to raise money for cancer research by running across Canada.
Terry started in St. Johns, Newfoundland, running the equivalent of a full marathon (26.2 miles) every day. He ran more than 2,400 miles (4,000 km) and reached Thunder Bay, Ontario before he had to stop.
Terry stopped because it turned out he'd been doing all the running after his cancer came back, and it had reached his lungs. He died nine months later.
He is an inspirational figure for Canadians and disabled people all over the world.

This is why I say there has not been a single time in American history being a conservative put you on the right side of history. Pick up any given Republican and drop them in this time they would absolutely be against Brown v. Board. Dropped into the early 1900s they would get be against women's suffrage. Honestly what do you think the average magat's thoughts would be on slavery in 1855? 1776...if the political middle of the road was tacit tolerance of being a British colony, certainly the idea of a revolution to install liberal democracy would be left of center. So where does that leave our star spangled 'murican conservative? That's right, King George loyalist. American conservativitism is rooted in hypocrisy and opposition to whatever history will inevitably deem morally right; it hasn't changed because by definition it opposes change.

Kanal 3 a TV channel here. But the story behind the photo is not really all that cute. We are big growers of canola. In winter, where other food is scarce, roe deer like the one in photo, feed on the green canola leaves under the snow. The problem is - the canola intoxicates them, making them disoriented and bold and can even k**l them in the end. One of the sign of canola intoxication is the loss of fear for humans. This picture is of one of those "canola deers" as we call them here. The positive note- we have volunteers and rehabilitation centers for such deer. It is very likely that the deer in picture was taken to one such center and nursed back to her normal human-shy self.

Im usually very opinionated and weird so it might just be precaution in my case😅 But on a happier note I remembered another tidbit- Moose do not get sick from eating canola, but I guess they get tipsy. Last spring young moose would gather on a canola field and hang out each evening at dusk. One evening I counted 18 moose on the same field - and they are usually quite solitary. It was like a moose rave out there! The field was obviously growing some good stuff.

Forest with tree trunks partially covered in red clay soil, a striking photo shared from a country that hit hard.

I have many (including some from the 1956 revolution), but this is the one that still sticks with me.

Not Photoshop, it was the aftermath of the "red mud" disaster that happened in 2010. A faulty wall broke down, and a 2-meter-high wave of liquid bauxite residue (causing chemical burns) flooded the nearby village, [fatal to]10 people. There are many iconic photos from this incident as well, but this is probably my favorite.

Aotearoa, as it should properly be called. Any fellow Kiwis here? These men were part of the Maori Battalion in the Second World War. From the New Zealand National Library: Members of the Maori Battalion who had fought in Greece, performing a haka for the King of Greece at Helwan, Egypt. Photograph taken circa 24 June 1941 by an unidentified official photographer. The four men in the foreground are, left to right; John Manuel, Maaka White, Te Kooti Reihana, and Rangi Henderson.

These men are the reason why the Americans and British who babble about "WE ALONE WON THE WAR" are such disgusting fvcks. It was a shared effort, and to pretend that soldiers like these Māori didn't exist is only marginally better than fighting them.

I love this story. Basically India was such a poor country at the time that the scientists and engineers had to manually assemble the rocket at the local high school as well as manually transport it to the launch site which was behind a church in Kerala. They would transport rocket parts via bicycles like in this photo or by walking or in bullock carts as there was not enough money to hire trucks to do the same. Dr Vikram Sarabhai (founder of ISRO) and APJ Abdul Kalam (scientist as well as President of India) were instrumental in this mission. ISRO has a reputation of doing a lot with very less budget, such as the time we got to Mars on our maiden attempt, something no other country has managed to do with a budget less than that of a typical Hollywood movie
