When you think about it, the internet is a democracy. Whether you're the President, an award-winning scientist, or just a spiteful troll, you can create a Twitter account and go from one thread to another, explaining to other users why they're stupid. However, if you're actually doing it, that's precisely what you need to keep in mind. It's just a matter of time before you run into someone who can call out your BS. And when that happens, you're going to end up on the subreddit r/DontYouKnowWhoIam. Like the name suggests, this online community is dedicated to those spicy moments when people were oblivious to who they were talking to, and has collected quite a lot of them since its inception in 2015. Here are some of the best ones.

Even though there's a line between self- and over-confidence, trusting in your judgment can help you become successful in life.
Both verbal and nonverbal communication can be extremely effective at garnering positive attention and influence in groups. According to one hypothesis (the presumption of calibration hypothesis), people generally assume others have the self-knowledge to know how confident they should be, and we also assume they will truthfully communicate this confidence to us (the so-called truth bias), unless extenuating circumstances suggest otherwise.
So whenever we see confidence, we tend to find it compelling, and we expect it to be justified.

Anyone else so sick of the vaccine argument? Should mention I'm not anti-vax. Have had covid twice myself. Edit: Was asked how I had it twice. First time I likely caught it in a post office. Only place I'd been for weeks as most of the country was shut. Second time my partner tested positive and then I did.

Interestingly, some research has reported that being overconfident while participating in a group activity did not damage the person’s reputation — individuals who trusted their task performance (but were later revealed to be worse at the task than they had claimed) did not suffer a severe drop in their social status in the group relative to someone who had been well-calibrated.

So... the minimum wage was increased when Republicans ran the House and Senate, but not when Democrats ran both houses and the presidency? OK, this is one of the silliest cases of not knowing who you're talking to, but still... maybe Reich's choice to simply become a hyper-partisan social-media rager wasn't such a great idea? (Don't misunderstand me, folks: the Republicans are far more likely to oppose raising the minimum wage. I support doing so. But I get frustrated that the Democrats seem to like having it around as a campaign issue than actually doing something about it.)

A minimum wage that is so low that people on it still qualify for social assistance from the government amounts to the government subsidizing businesses to pay unreasonably low wages. That's a policy which is so insane that no-one in their right mind would ever vote for directly.

Minimum wage was made for starting in the workforce at 16-17 years old. It was never made for people to live on. Things have changed, women and men now have to try to live on that wage. We need to figure out a living wage for the people who have to work and live on minimum wage!!

some places don’t have that kind of money. I’m still a kid, so I don’t know much, but lets say that there are five workers in a dunkin donuts that isn’t doing so well. The amount given to minimum wage workers rises, so the owner has to give each worker more than they were giving before. In order to make a profit and have ends meet, they would have to fire at least one worker so everyone else can get paid equally. So, wouldn’t raising prices push some people out of work? I don’t know if I’m missing something, so correct me if I’m wrong.

It should be $15, but even if not how the hell can anyone think $7.25 is still even remotely appropriate. Minimum wage should be required to increase $1 every 3 years at minimum. The last time minimum wage increased I was paying $600/month for a 2bed/2bath. The exact same place is now $1400/month and hasn't even been renovated in the near decade since I moved out. My rent now for a DECENT newer place, 2bed/2 bath is $1700/month.

Exactly! A sauna doesn't have to be uncomfortable to be 'good for you' at all! It should be something relaxing, that's all. It might be good for your hearth health, but there's not that much evidence that saunas have health benefits. Still, getting uncomfortably hot is not good.

My mother in law's doctors, dentist etc know everything, as soon as I tell her anything my health visitor or midwife has said on their visits "What do they know", "we never did that, they're wrong" ..."babies don't change so caring for them doesn't" etc etc ..we've actually come to blows over this when she said I should be giving my son a bottle when he's exclusively breast fed..I couldn't breast feed my Daughter so I'm thrilled my Son takes to it but she was constantly battling to get him on the bottle for no reason other than to have her own way -.-

Ah people judging someone before getting all the facts. I've lived with this all my life. Despite having 20 years under my belt doing what I do, often people that don't know me can get pretty snarky. Not shaving for a week helped as I pass the 40 mark. Prior to that, it was pretty frustrating.

I once did wrote an article on alternative (fun) ways to teach math to small children. That was not the official name ofcourse i wrote the article in dutch. I found it a year later on someones desk on a different job. That person was alway mocking me for being 'just' an intern and treated like i was dumb. Started telling me about the article but that i wouldnt understand cause the sources used we too 'deep and scientific for me to understand'. Told her i wrote it. She called me a liar and said a university published it. I was a student there and yes i did write it.

My literature teacher for 4th grade never called on me to answer questions. I was confused because I was the most advanced reader in that class. I talked to her after class one day, asking why she never called on me. I used to work at an airport, manager for the company that handled the restaurants. One Saturday my assistant manager and myself were inventory counting a Caribou Coffee and this sill looking skinny white guy walks up. Plaid short only the top button fastened, wife beater, baggy jeans, the ball cap with the razor straight bill and a lot of bling. I looked at said in a low voice ‘Look at this Vanilla Ice wanna be MFer’. Then a guy comes RUNNING across the terminal and is shaking homeboy’s hand and gushing over him. It WAS Vanilla Ice, who had played a show the night before. He was actually really cool too.

My mother in law's doctors, dentist etc know everything, as soon as I tell her anything my health visitor or midwife has said on their visits "What do they know", "we never did that, they're wrong" ..."babies don't change so caring for them doesn't" etc etc ..we've actually come to blows over this when she said I should be giving my son a bottle when he's exclusively breast fed..I couldn't breast feed my Daughter so I'm thrilled my Son takes to it but she was constantly battling to get him on the bottle for no reason other than to have her own way -.-

I was talking to a friend, and they mentioned that their niece was just diagnosed with diabetes. I said "Oh no! Tell her that it's okay, she can do it." Some random lady just walks up behind us and says, "that's really insensitive. My cousin's girlfriend has diabetes, so I know what will offend a diabetic." I have type 1 diabetes.

This has happened many times for me. Especially with my aunt's boyfriends. She tells them I know a lot about history, so they quiz me to see if that is true. Not only do I know a lot about his, I have a bachelor's degree in history. So, yeah, I know what I am talking about.

Ah people judging someone before getting all the facts. I've lived with this all my life. Despite having 20 years under my belt doing what I do, often people that don't know me can get pretty snarky. Not shaving for a week helped as I pass the 40 mark. Prior to that, it was pretty frustrating.

I once did wrote an article on alternative (fun) ways to teach math to small children. That was not the official name ofcourse i wrote the article in dutch. I found it a year later on someones desk on a different job. That person was alway mocking me for being 'just' an intern and treated like i was dumb. Started telling me about the article but that i wouldnt understand cause the sources used we too 'deep and scientific for me to understand'. Told her i wrote it. She called me a liar and said a university published it. I was a student there and yes i did write it.

My sweet mom was having her roof replaced on a brutally hot day. She had cold drinks in her frig for when the workers were on break. One was sitting in her kitchen and told her that he was working "off the books", and nothing was being reported for tax purposes. She put her Internal Revenue Service ID on the table in front of him, smiled, and asked, "Do you realize who you're talking to?" The guy left and never returned.

My literature teacher for 4th grade never called on me to answer questions. I was confused because I was the most advanced reader in that class. I talked to her after class one day, asking why she never called on me. She said “Sorry kiddo, but I think you would just confuse the other kids with how you pronounce words.” This was because I had a lisp back then and pronounced every word that had double o’s or just one o with an r.

I used to work at an airport, manager for the company that handled the restaurants. One Saturday my assistant manager and myself were inventory counting a Caribou Coffee and this sill looking skinny white guy walks up. Plaid short only the top button fastened, wife beater, baggy jeans, the ball cap with the razor straight bill and a lot of bling. I looked at said in a low voice ‘Look at this Vanilla Ice wanna be MFer’. Then a guy comes RUNNING across the terminal and is shaking homeboy’s hand and gushing over him. It WAS Vanilla Ice, who had played a show the night before. He was actually really cool too.

Unpopular opinion I'm sure, but my goodness I am so sick of hearing about covid arguments. We get it. People will never agree on something that shouldnt have anyone arguing in the first place and everyone wants to be the big dog on top and show somebody else up. Great. Cool. People suck, pets are life. Can we move on now?

My friend had a good one like this. They (my friend's pronoun) was arbitrarily labelled as a 'white male' at birth, and they was trying to go to an event once, and the organizer said at the entrance: 'Sorry, this is only for black women.' So they replies: 'I IDENTIFY as a black woman!' You should have seen how surprised the organizer looked!
