Really tough job in my town. Extremely well paid for the rather shrot hours, so there is actually quite a large number of applicants to chose from. The have a really funny campaign on their cars and trash cans, too, and are very much considered a part of the City (at least the main comapny, the smaller recycling ones not so much) They are certainly not people you woudl disrespect.

lmao the dumbass who made the comment about knowing their place should also know that garbage collectors can actually make quite a bit of money. If I remember correctly the better paid garbage collectors get over 40k dollars a year which is 10k above the average. TBH not a bad job as well as being very important.
My husband used to be a civil engineer in the highways department of a local town and one week he had to shadow the bin wagon employees to get an idea of where their routes were and if it was all accessible to them. He said that they were the nicest, most hardworking guys he'd come across and they earned decent money, especially the bin wagon driver who was in a higher wage bracket than him.
Our garbage collectors wake up early. Why do I know this? Every Wednesday at 6 am, I hear the trash truck. These guys work hard for probably very little pay, get over it.
My kids love to see them and they are always nice, kind and very patiently seeing hallo and waving goodbye to kids.

Some dudes figured out that they could stand next to the box where people were supposed to put in their money to pay, claim to be 'working for the parking lot and collecting the money', and walk away with hundreds of bucks on a busy Sat. night.
I remember a series of photos a while back that detailed the story of a large, white wall on one side of an otherwise decrepit building. It was initially "vandalized" with many creative, colorful, and stylized name-tag graffitis, but the owner soon painted over them. Then another artist took advantage of the newly-blank canvas and painted a gorgeous undersea mural. Within a week the owner painted over this, too. The final photo shows the result of this artist's angry second attempt to paint the wall, which was a crudely-written sentence reading, "this wall used to have art on it but now it is covered with c***s". Which it was,literally hundreds of them, scrawled in black spraypaint.
Hoping that one day we will be able to punch people like these via internet.
