84 Times Artists Caught Companies And Fake Artists Copying Their Work And Selling It As Their Own
Thanks to the internet it's never been easier for people to rip off something that somebody else created and pass it off as their own. It isn't just individuals who do it either, but major well-known companies like New Look, Forever21, and even Disney. We wrote about one such case before, where artist Tuesday Bassen discovered that Spanish retailer Zara had stolen her designs and were using them without crediting her, and now Bored Panda has compiled an extended list of people who have experienced similar unfair treatment at the hands of people too lazy, or too talentless, to create something for themselves. Scroll down to see for yourself, and let us know how you feel in the comments.

Art By Katie Woodger Stolen By Disney
The best way for it is to post things like this on facebook, twitter etc... Let's see how disney would quiet down a raging fire
I would crowdfund a lawsuit, with the reward/payout being a percentage of the settlement if you win.
I would expect them to quickly offer a settlement once they realize they won't get away with it. Especially if you make more noise with local media etc.

Where did you find that bag and are you SURE that Disney crafted it? There's a good chance it's a knock off company. PS, I googled "Disney Alice in Wonderland cosmetic bag" and not one image of that bag showed up anywhere.
Also the screenshot is from the Disney Store website

Considering how quick Disney are to bring aggressive legal action against the smallest, most remote, business producing an item with an unlicensed Disney image, this behaviour is doubly reprehensible. I hope that she does seek legal advice because she does have rights.
You had "so much respect"? For DISNEY??!! They are, and always have been business first.
They don't respect any other artist that are not designing for them.

Crazy!! This should get upvotes... it's not freakin triangles!! It's a blatant copy of a very distinctive artwork. Your work is gorgeous btw!
Doing this to a creative person, deliberately, is on par with child and animal abuse in my book. More, to sign something as your own work when it isn't is low down, scuzzy, sleezy and a crime.
I wouldn't necessarily compare it to abuse, but it's definitely bad.

Woman Steals Artwork From Artist Ryan Conners, Paints Flowers On Top Of It And Sells Products With It As Her Own
Love your picture though! And you win 10 internet points for the sentence 'puking flowers all over it" :)
She took something from you and modified it, just as you did with Frida's work: https://www.fridakahlo.org/self-portrait-with-monkeys.jsp
By law "Cease and Desist" letters hold a great deal of weight and she sounds scared since she told you, you should "keep quiet". You can download a sample off of the internet and publish on your site that it was sent to her. Good for you in publishing her response to you! Many artists don't realize the power they DO have and it is letting people get away with it that hinders the possibility of protections for others.
Mmm not exact but the original is a self portrait of a mexican painter frida kahlo painted in 1940 so you kinda STOLE ART TOO!!!!!
give us her name and we can trash her ^^ I can t believe this b***h told you to "keep quite". She s so direspectful, you should not let her go with it.
Zara Steals Tuesday Bassen's Artwork
This is outrageous! Zara should be so ashamed!!! They got enough money to hire an entire team of designer FFS, do they really need to steal???
It is never a question of "needing" or not it is alway's a Cost/profit calculations. Same as the right price for a product is one the customer is willing to pay. Not the cost + a small margin. They probably still have an entire design team. But it still saves them designers and time to steal stuff.
Load More Replies...This is nauseating. I never shop at Zara but I know people who do; I'm going to show them this and get them to boycott this disgusting bully of a company.
The arrogant response by Zara really makes me angry!!! Please contact the lawmakers of your country. We need laws that protect intellectual property. The law is behind the times. Shameful that big companies that can afford to pay would steal even such a small amount from someone. Really unethical. Boycott them and let these thieves' businesses die.
This is justice in the western world. You are right if you can afford it. Else you are wrong. Justice is for the priviliged. The more money you have the more right you are. In an ideal world every party would have acces to the same amount of tools to prove their point.
The funny thing is that everything Tuesday Bassen has here, isn't their original work either. These are pretty common ideas that have been done over and over again, over the years. You can't actually claim that this is your original work when it isn't original in the first place.
Can you "quietly" get a patent on this? Then you can sue her a*s off for using it! That is all I can think of. Good luck, really, very good luck.
That letter that claims that they are a major corp. and you're an indie will come in very useful in the lawsuit.

Lili....can you tell me where I can get a poster of your doggie language? Do you sell it online? It is very special. Love your work.
I would contribute to a crowdfunding initiative to pay for that lawsuit
It's ridiculously expensive to sue someone much less an entire corporation. Your best bet would be to take this and share share share on as many social media sites as possible. Get others to share it and try your damndest to make it go as viral as possible. If you can do that, you might just be able to get enough people making enough noise to catch their attention. Maybe then they'll at least compensate you in some way for the use of your work. And even if you do decide to go the hire a lawyer and suing route, I would still do what I suggested about making it go as viral as you can. Get enough people's attention and it should be easier to get the companies attention.
Well .... tha company is mud to me ...... They probably won't make that much on them anyway but do a small claims suit for the max.
Company Stealing Artwork From Artist
I have a Facebook friend who had a Youtube video hijacked and used by a company without ant permission. Ford Steals Firewatch Artwork For A Promotional Ad
Working in advertising, I have to say that unfortunately, most of the time, the clients don't have any idea where the artwork comes from, it's the ad agency or the graphic designers who stole it or are too lazy to produce real work...
I think you are right, but they are still responsible for what they allow the agency to produce for them, even if they are ignorant.
Load More Replies...I guarantee Ford management does not condone the stealing of the artwork. They know the cost-benefit analysis is absolutely not worth it. This is the result of sloppy oversight from the people who created the ad. Heads roll over this type of thing because Ford does not want potential nationwide bad press over artwork that's worth a few hundred to a few thousand.
I don't know all that is involved but what does it cost to credit the original owner of an art work? I would be heart broken if I labored to produce something and then an individual or company comes in and then steals it. THAT. WOULD. HURT. A. LOT!

Etsy Shop Owner Using Belandkal Artwork Without Permission On Their Laser Etched Products. The Art Itself Is Pretty Ironic In This Case
I've actually noticed that this happens a LOT on etsy for some reason. I mean, a LOT LOT. They really need to crack down on this s**t. They do it because they think they can get away with it without consequences. Perhaps if they started shutting folks down/banning people and threatening legal action against those that steal artwork and try to pass it as their own, they might stop feeling so confident about attempting it. Cuz as of right now, people think nothing of doing it.
I'm a HUGE fan of the popular K-pop group Stray Kids (their music is INCREDIBLE; they're not so big in Korea, because their music is much more hip-hop/rock influenced than most K-pop; if anyone wants a couple song recommendations, DM me!!!) and unfortunately finding items that are actually original is a needle in a haystack; it took my 9 PAGES of looking to find something original (handmade reproductions of earrings worn by my favorite member), and they're always copying each other.

Unfortunately there is very little you can do when a company overseas steals your art.
Don't downvote Angela, I know about one type of art theft being sold on Amazon and people from Amazon said that it wasn't their fault and they can't do anything about it. It's a loop so the artists that have been robbed of their artworks can mostly never end up getting back what they deserve :(
miniinthebox is a retail company, so it's not really their problem. The manufacturing company is the one that should be blamed.
Not their fault maybe, but definitely their problem.

That's Briana Garcia, she works for Disney. I've been following her work for years and she's fantastic. She started in Disneyland and has worked her way into their artist showcases and character drawing demonstrations. She is very talented. Her sketches and illustrations are 100% her property and do not belong to disney or the public unless she expressly says so. Regardless of the subject. If i draw Disney's cinderella, that is 100% MY work. Credit to Disney for their character but MY illustration. If i take YOUR illustration of disney's cinderella and claim it as my own then i am stealing YOUR work. If i take your illustration and try to sell it, i'm putting myself at legal risk for stealing both IP's because i did not make the drawing and do not have permission to sell it as my own goods and i do not have permission to profit from the selling of a copyrighted disney character.
Oh my god! I feel so cheated! I commented on his page! Pisses me off! I hope he gets what's coming to him! Great work Ms Briana!
The thief is a total s**t. However, many commenters need to brush up on IP and contractual law with regards to whether the artist or Disney owns the work. Regardless, f**k this guy.

Stolen Fan Art
I wonder if this company has an official license agreement with Disney and or Tim Burton and if they're allowed to use fan art based on their licensed intellectual properties. I'd have to brush on my character copyright knowledge to see if you'd even have a leg to stand on in chasing them up. You'd be better off asking Disney if they approved this, and then see what their take on it is. I do wonder if companies are allowed to take fan art based off their licensed characters without paying the fan artist.
I think you can’t sell fan art un permitted excepting some circumstances but companies including the company your fan arting can’t profit off your work.

The original is much nicer anyway. I LOVE the muscle and tendon definition in it. It shows the power and beauty of the human body. The imitation smoothed those all away and made the model's legs look like plastic.
Oh, and the shoes in the original are obviously used. They've got they beat up look to them and the laces aren't perfect. The copy has brand new perfect shoes perfectly laced. Utterly fake. The original is LIFE BEING LIVED. The copy is obviously staged to sell some c**p.

this artist use a lot of other image to his on work so i dont know for that
I’m not saying this wasn’t an appropriation, but a lot of modern pop art uses the base of other popular images to create dialogue or commentary. Mixed media pieces like this might have many layers to the statement the creator is trying to make, this one using several. This is very different than someone who is lifting an image and calling it their own or trying to resell something that doesn’t belong to them. In many cases the pop artist will credit the original artwork and artists in it’s use. Real artists want to express themselves in their own words and work.
Did you see the first one he copied above that is literally basically the same but with the Vincent Van Gogh background because that doesn't seem like what you are describing to me.

Making "Fanart" is different than "Copying". Art from copyrighted characters is considered the artist's private art, but the distribution or selling of fanart based on copyrighted characters is considered stealing (in terms of monetarily) and usually artists that have inspired art that want to produce it contact the studio that copyrighted the characters and work out arrangements to sell it. So, it's considered your own, because it's "inspired" but that you can't sell it without their consent.

Art comes in many different forms. Meaning, art can be anything from manga to framed poodle barf splatters. It's just up to your taste of style but anything that is similar to expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power (quoted directly from Google.com). Obviously you have horrible taste in just about everything, I mean stereotyping art that looks like a 10 year old's art??? Shallow much? I bet if starry night wasn't famous and some random genius college kid painted it you would have thought it was ugly paint splatters. Good luck not being criticized. Just kidding, have fun looking at how many dislikes your comment can get.

looks like some kid is just learning to draw and don't know better to link back or contact the original artist.
I agree. Many people, especially children and teenagers, copy artwork they admire as a way of increasing their skills. There is nothing wrong with that. And if they feel they've done a good job they'll be proud and show people. Acknowledging the original artist is a polite thing to do and good way to increase links in the community. That said I have no idea if the original artist has approached the copier, in a friendly manner, complemented their work and asked that in future they acknowledge who drew the original picture. If not then that should be the first step. If they have then they have a right to be annoyed. That said, it's not a legal manner unless they are profiting in someway from it or commiting fraud (e.g. getting into art school), just a matter of manners and decency.
Load More Replies...So...? Many people learn to draw by copying pictures, I doubt he tries to sell it?!
If they're not selling it and just showing off art they've used your art as reference from... I guess you could ask them to credit you. It's probably not going to get you very far though. Artists copy other artists to practice drawing all the time. It's a good copy, but if it's just some private drawing, consider it a good tribute that went uncredited.

Don't worry, the copies are atrocious!! Looks like they were done by an elementary school kid!
well....it all depends on whether the copies get some money (for unknown reason, I agree)...

Are you sure you aren't mistaken? Marani's copies are on the right.

Side note to everyone else: It has to be the owner of the art making the report.

Artist Shepard Fairey Used A Picture Of B.Obama For His Poster Without A Permission Of Photographer Mannie Garcia Who Took The Picture
Shepard's career highlights include taking a photo, add in photoshop filter and then make millions. Photographer sees nothing from it.
While there is a posterize filter, you would NOT get the kind of quality and detail in the 'stolen art' by just slapping it onto the original photo. The artist created the image using the pose as reference. Still should have gotten the artist's permission or at the very least credited them, but the process was not as simple as you're saying.
Load More Replies...This case is WAY more complicated than it appears here. First off Shepard got permission to use a photo that was nearly identical to this one. Second off the photographer wasn’t the slightest bit mad and actually befriended shepherd, it was the company he was working for that was super upset.
I consider just about everyone of Shepard Fairey's so called artworks plagiarism.
It's very much still theft. I'm a painter, and if I use a photographers imagery I ALWAYS ask for permission.

No, it's not. It's perfectly legal to create fan art that does not get sold or hired.

This Guy Totally Ripped Off My Favorite Artist Kshocs. Even The Coloring Is The Same
Well, it s complicated for tatoo. of course the Kshocks s one is gorgeous. But i can imagine that someone can t travel to get this tatoo and ask an other tatoo artist to make it... very common actually. A lot of tatoos are just copy of some design because the customers want it. What we need is a good tatoo artist who can do everything we ask. but asking them to copy some work can just have a very bas result on you at the end, it s a risk sinc everybody as skills in some styles or not... but i dont see the problem. If my tatoo artist dont see any problem to do a copyright caracter or drawing if i ask it... why should we be upset for that one. Should we jail all the tatoo artist who did a mickey on their customers. Wake up people. The customers ask and you just fulfill his wish. It would be some art work from internet, nobody would have say s**t.
A good tattoo artist won't copy another one's design. They may use elements of the design or do something similar, but they wouldn't make an exact copy.
Load More Replies...I don't want to agree with this. If the tattoo artist claims that it's his design in his shop then yes it would be wrong. There are a many people with the EXACT same tattoo cause they like it and would orefer the original work. But yea if the tattoo artist markets the original design as theirs then I believe its forgery. Just my opinion don't mean to start anything lol
But I think making the same tattoo as someone else is ok. Or do I need to ask for permission if I see someone in the city with a nice tattoo and I want to do the same?
Stolen art is stolen art. It doesn't matter what medium it's on.
Load More Replies...Hmm... Isn't it like really flattering if someone gets a piece of your art as a tattoo? Unless ofcourse that person goes "oh I drew this myself". (Might wanna ask permission from the artist to get it as a tattoo though I suppose...)
The original artist, kshocs, is a tattoo artist. So this isn't a case of someone taking another form of art and getting it tattooed, it's someone taking a tattoo artist's work and having it done by some other tattoo artist. It's doubly gross because of the person who requested it from another artist AND the artist who was willing to tattoo/copy someone else's work.
Load More Replies...Remember guys we can't get tattoos we like unless WE drew it ourselves.
OR the tattoo artist creates the art themselves. Stolen art is stolen art. It doesn't matter what medium the art is reproduced on.

Getting it as a tattoo isn't so bad, but going around and saying it's her own design is.
Load More Replies...Hopefully the girl is good looking so at least it's on a decent canvas and not on the butt of some $2 chicken head on crack row.
The tattoo artists get money for the work and not for the pictures. he girl just saw a pretty picture on the internet and liked it for a tattoo. Maybe she just wanted to say that this is not from the tattoo studio catalog. So if you want to get Justin Bieber's face tattooed you need to ask him? This is not a commercial use of your pictures, you should not complain - it is not like you are losing money! You put your art on the web and of course, someone will like it.
I have a whole folder full of stolen pinterest images of tattoos of my commercial Canada maple leaf souvenir images. An embarrassment to the victims to know they are forever marked by a stolen commercial souvenir design.
It's sad how few people understand intellectual property law and ethics. Especially bizarre that people seem to excuse it when it's a tattoo. Tattoos are not a free-for-all to steal artwork. No, an unapproved tattoo copy of someone's artwork is not flattery. It's theft. Flattery does not pay the bills. When the tattoo artist gets paid (knowingly or not) for copying someone else's art, that's an exchange of money for stolen art, and the artist is not getting that money (getting no compensation for their intellectual property being used/sold).

This makes me so sad. Specially when the copycats are big companies stealing artwork of new and young artists knowing that the original artists can't do a thing to protect their work. Obviously designers get inspired by the things that they see and might eventually end up creating something similar, but just copying what they see is so low. I have this top which has been fairly popular ever since I made the first prototype in 2013. Over the last year so I've seen it being copied plenty times. The one on the left is my original design. What I want to see are the reactions of the thieves and how those stories unfolded, be it catching red-handed, lawsuits and other actions. I hope the thieves get what they deserve, starting from social exclusion, through embarrasement and undermined "talent" to heavy financial punishment. How can you be so insolent and steal like that?! Have you no shame?
It's very hard to actually punish them. Those Zara and Berska things are sold all around (saw them at the store only a few months back), and people were buying them like crazy because they're cute indeed. Did these people know the designs were stolen? Probably not. And even if they were, convenience would have probably won anyway. Lawyers cost a lot of money, and usually artists are short on that. The only ones who can easily be taken care of are those small businesses selling stuff online, by spreading the word. But the rest? It's going to be very hard.

This frustrates me so much. People have no respect for the amount of skill and time it takes to produce an artwork. With bigger companies, if they like the artwork enough, I'm sure they can shell out enough to pay artists for their time, but they just don't want to bother. Bigger companies know they can get away with ripping off smaller artists, and it is so maddening. I myself recently had my work ripped off. Was your illustration posted online somewhere that Google Image Search can find it? Most likely, this is how most of these rip offs are being made. Instead of hiring an artist, they're appropriating stuff they find with search engines and not caring about the source. The only solution to this particular problem is to never post your stuff on line. Get into galleries or sell your own product with clear watermarks on the photographs of your merchandise, but don't post your stuff online in any usable size. This is frustrating indeed, because how do we artists share our works with others without them being harvested?
