It wasn't until high school that I realized that my uncle who always came to family events with his "friend", was actually gay and that was his partner. It turns out it was more of a "don't ask, don't tell" policy, they were never openly affectionate at these family events and everyone accepted his friend as it he were really just a friend. They finally came out to the family and are now married, and are still one of the happiest married couples I know. It's a joy to see how happy they are after 40 years together.

My sister had this realisation with my Aunt and her partner - to be fair, me and my brother only realised the year before. We'd just grown up never questioning their relationship.

So... I get that lesbians seems like a logical conclusion, but also a reminder that it is easy to misinterpret history based on our current social filter. They do specify that this is unusual for that time.

Pole here - it is not in language or "romantic manner", that is just a romance. But in Poland there are histiorians who will die in fight over it and sell bulshit like "style", "epoque vibes". Also, I am polish filologist and I read a lot romatic letters and diaries. That is not epoque or style, just affair and desire ;)

Yeah, every heterosexual wants to kiss someone of the same sex for absolutely no reason. People really need to get over their insecurities when discussing gay people.

I thought it was pretty widely known that Chopin was bisexual. His longest and most stable romantic relationship was with a woman, Aurore Dudevant/George Sand - but it does seem that in his younger years he was mostly involved with guys. (And, not for nothing, George Sand was probably also bisexual, preferred to dress as a man and to use her chosen male name - she was anything but a conventional 19th-century woman!)
