Finding suitable childcare can be a real challenge for many parents. Especially when so many Americans don’t hide their suspicion towards their nannies; The Zebra survey has revealed that 4 in 5 Americans would record a nanny or pet sitter inside their home (79%).
Ongoing prejudice against babysitters, and the constant pressure so many parents put on them, all while navigating being a carer, a friend, a family member, and an employee at once is what makes babysitting probably one of the most demanding jobs out there.
But entitled parents make it way worse. Collected from the "Choosing Beggars" Reddit community, below are some of the worst nanny job offers posted online. From totally delusional requirements to offering $3/h for an experienced nanny with higher education, these posts scream only two things: “Run!” and “Now!”

You can't have a sitter that teaches them how to reason, or else the kids will end up causing a lot of trouble for their parent when their kids have learn to see through their bullshit and how to pose a proper argument. The sitter's level of sanity basically must match the parent's if that is ever to work out.

Only Trump fans are that stupid, so that is a redundant requirement. Only resonable requirements on that list are: No drugs. No alcohol, Ok with the dogs, and willing to work with kids of that age. Good references (maybe, but the level required seem a bit high). CPR is nice but hopefully not stictly nessesary.

In the U.S., workers are struggling for a livable wage. Note, that's different than a family wage. (Google it.) We used to have ample jobs that could support a family. No longer. We let wages stagnate. $12/hr may be what the parents are getting paid, but it's ridiculous to value a sitter's time significantly less than that.

In the UK a baby sitter is generally someone who comes at night for a couple of hours whilst you go for dinner or to the cinema! Most of these look more like nanny jobs!

Are they looking for a babysitter or a nanny, who actually went to a school who took nanny training? If so, they should contact a nanny agency. It's so pretentious of them to ask for someone with a college degree to babysit. And for the price they're offering, is a total insult.

And I quit dating divorced men who had custody of the kids every other week -- thinking that me as their girlfriend would sit with them for free, or worse, watch after them when we are supposed to be on a "date." Why don't these people put the kids in military school 'til they are 16 and give everyone else a break!

Okay I have one from when I was a teen: my mom said someone asked me to babysit their four kids for a few hours while they went to a funeral, and although I hated babysitting I wanted money so I said okay. I was wondering out loud how much I should charge for four kids, since I normally only dealt with 1-2. My mom went crazy, saying that I shouldn't be charging at all because they were going to a FUNERAL. Still can't figure out if I was the asshole for wanting to get paid...

I admit that I had a little sticker shock, but since most are full time plus hours, babysitters aren't being unreasonable. I haven't babysat for over 20 years, and I had not looked into going rates, so I'm kinda glad I came across this so I didn't offer something ridiculously low. I mean, do these people realize that they are demanding full grown adults accept rates that wouldn't cover a car and insurance that they require, let alone the mountains of student debt from the degree they inexplicably think is necessary? And I am in no means downplaying the value of childcare or college degrees, both take tremendous hard work and dedication; but these people are asking for a much more casual babysitter to do formal daycare, preschool, driver, cook, housekeeper and personal assistant, for ridiculous amount of time, and often on ridiculous schedules that preclude working for living wage or attending college. Says a lot about how stay at home parents are undervalued, even by themselves.

This is so ridiculous... Babysitting is a job and should be rewarded accordingly. We occasionally hire a babysitter for our eight year old, and she helped us out many times during the covid school closures. She was often available at that time because she had only online classes too and couldn't work her usual student job in a restaurant. She's a 19 year old student and we pay her 8 euros per hour cash in hand, and an extra bonus when we asked her to do school assignments with our daughter. That's a decent pay in my country for someone her age. And she was a lifesaver when the schools were closed. This babysitter always likes to come when we ask her and she's available, and my daughter is also very enthusiastic about her. When you treat a babysitter right and pay her decent, she does the job with pleasure and that's also beneficial for your child. If you pay peanuts, you get monkeys. And if you forget good manners, you should not be surprised if nobody wants to babysit for you anymore.

This entire article is the most convincing argument I have seen yet for universal daycare. Some parents really are struggling to pay for daycare or after school care and need the financial relief. (It's expensive, man.) The children of THESE parents and any other parents like them need to be in the care of qualified caregivers who are paid commensurate to their skills and education. Instead of those kids being fobbed off onto some poor overworked, under appreciated woman who is treated little better than a slave and paid at just about that level.

Some of these parents probably get help from the Government to help with food etc. They want something handed to them . I understand a single parent sometimes needs a sitter , but , some of these people are just leeches. If you can't afford to heat the castle, don't buy the castle-same goes for kids-don't have them if you can't afford them. Some of these parents have low paying jobs but want a sitter with degrees .

I find it amusing that entitled parents who can afford to pay more act like you should be happy with the small amount they are willing to pay and are confused when someone tells them no about the conditions they want you to work under, then think you should be grateful that they want to possibly hire you!! They like to treat us like we are the “little people “! Most people who are on the poorer side of the spectrum don’t act this way!! So to assume it is someone who is poor and taking advantage of the system tells a lot about you and your priorities! Shame on you!!

Ugh, it was so hard to read these. It is sickening how people can be so entitled and delusional. And it's so annoying when people try to get sympathy/empathy because they made the decision to push out a brat or two or more. In my experience when a parent says that their kid is "an angel" or "well behaved", it's always the opposite. They are usually the worst ones and definitely not "well behaved". It's unfortunate that anyone could get sucked in to these ridiculous posts and actually settle for such a small pay. These posts sound so demanding and borderline abusive, so I wouldn't be surprised that whoever works for them will get that kind of treatment. People are just disgusting some times.

Okay I have one from when I was a teen: my mom said someone asked me to babysit their four kids for a few hours while they went to a funeral, and although I hated babysitting I wanted money so I said okay. I was wondering out loud how much I should charge for four kids, since I normally only dealt with 1-2. My mom went crazy, saying that I shouldn't be charging at all because they were going to a FUNERAL. Still can't figure out if I was the asshole for wanting to get paid...

I admit that I had a little sticker shock, but since most are full time plus hours, babysitters aren't being unreasonable. I haven't babysat for over 20 years, and I had not looked into going rates, so I'm kinda glad I came across this so I didn't offer something ridiculously low. I mean, do these people realize that they are demanding full grown adults accept rates that wouldn't cover a car and insurance that they require, let alone the mountains of student debt from the degree they inexplicably think is necessary? And I am in no means downplaying the value of childcare or college degrees, both take tremendous hard work and dedication; but these people are asking for a much more casual babysitter to do formal daycare, preschool, driver, cook, housekeeper and personal assistant, for ridiculous amount of time, and often on ridiculous schedules that preclude working for living wage or attending college. Says a lot about how stay at home parents are undervalued, even by themselves.

This is so ridiculous... Babysitting is a job and should be rewarded accordingly. We occasionally hire a babysitter for our eight year old, and she helped us out many times during the covid school closures. She was often available at that time because she had only online classes too and couldn't work her usual student job in a restaurant. She's a 19 year old student and we pay her 8 euros per hour cash in hand, and an extra bonus when we asked her to do school assignments with our daughter. That's a decent pay in my country for someone her age. And she was a lifesaver when the schools were closed. This babysitter always likes to come when we ask her and she's available, and my daughter is also very enthusiastic about her. When you treat a babysitter right and pay her decent, she does the job with pleasure and that's also beneficial for your child. If you pay peanuts, you get monkeys. And if you forget good manners, you should not be surprised if nobody wants to babysit for you anymore.

This entire article is the most convincing argument I have seen yet for universal daycare. Some parents really are struggling to pay for daycare or after school care and need the financial relief. (It's expensive, man.) The children of THESE parents and any other parents like them need to be in the care of qualified caregivers who are paid commensurate to their skills and education. Instead of those kids being fobbed off onto some poor overworked, under appreciated woman who is treated little better than a slave and paid at just about that level.

Some of these parents probably get help from the Government to help with food etc. They want something handed to them . I understand a single parent sometimes needs a sitter , but , some of these people are just leeches. If you can't afford to heat the castle, don't buy the castle-same goes for kids-don't have them if you can't afford them. Some of these parents have low paying jobs but want a sitter with degrees .

I disagree with what you just said. I find it amusing that entitled parents who can afford to pay more act like you should be happy with the small amount they are willing to pay and are confused when someone tells them no about the conditions they want you to work under, then think you should be grateful that they want to possibly hire you!! They like to treat us like we are the “little people “! Most people who are on the poorer side of the spectrum don’t act this way!! So to assume it is someone who is poor and taking advantage of the system tells a lot about you and your priorities! Shame on you!!

Ugh, it was so hard to read these. It is sickening how people can be so entitled and delusional. And it's so annoying when people try to get sympathy/empathy because they made the decision to push out a brat or two or more. In my experience when a parent says that their kid is "an angel" or "well behaved", it's always the opposite. They are usually the worst ones and definitely not "well behaved". It's unfortunate that anyone could get sucked in to these ridiculous posts and actually settle for such a small pay. These posts sound so demanding and borderline abusive, so I wouldn't be surprised that whoever works for them will get that kind of treatment. People are just disgusting some times.
