Found This Old Photo Inside The Wall In The Attic
This lady is some ones mom, sister, wife, or daughter. She is obviously older and had a rougher life than any of us could ever imagine. She could have been the sweetest most generous person when she was alive. Have some dang respect for the dead.
Well, she is just an old woman portrayed. His life is reflected in his face. And an inspiration for the average Iron Maiden's album cover, it must be said.
I wish you knew more about this photo.Looks like she has cataracts
Yeah. She owns this house and is just letting you live in it for now.

And where would the matching black eyebrows have gone? Oftentimes people would get photographed upon death, so I also wonder if the person in this picture is alive.
Load More Replies...The past holds a lot of lessons and a lot of nostalgia, but there’s something about the pictures shared on r/oldschoolcreepy that make you do a double take, realizing the amount of disturbing yet oddly fascinating things our ancestors partook in. Such as having demons sitting on you whilst you sleep halfway off your bed. Seems like this would give you a sore back, love…
However, ‘creepy’ doesn’t mean the same thing as ‘scary,’ although they belong to the same family of feelings. So what actually defines the sensations we get when we look at these pictures: the limbo between deciding whether to fight, fly, or just ignore and move on with life? To answer this, we need to hit the history books (not literally).
Penny Auction At Foreclosed Michigan Farm (1936). At Penny Auctions Farmers Would Conspire To Offer Low Bids, Resulting In A Low Return To The Creditor. The Final Buyer Would Then Return The Property To The Destitute Farmer Hangman Nooses Served As A Warning To Squirrely Bidders

Does anyone remember Willie Nelson starting Farm Aid concerts due to this same thing? During the Reagan era in the 80’s.
There is nothing at all creepy about this (those nooses were never used, just there). Maybe if people (read also: companies) didn't constantly try to screw others over in order to make a buck, we'd have a more balanced species, but we don't. I say bring things like this back to encourage "creditors" to change their ways. It's entire possible for companies (read also: creditors/lenders) to continue to make a profit without bending people over without so much as a hello, perhaps dinner.
I remember an episode of Little House on the Prairie where the Ingalls's had to sell everything and the townsfolk did this (without a noose in sight lol). Mrs. Oleson tried to bid up but couldn't because she was the auctioneer (of course she was). The Ingalls's got everything back.

Charles Dickens is credited with the first use of the phrase “the creeps” in his 1849 novel David Copperfield, to mean an unpleasant, tingly chill up the spine. The phrasing of such feelings quickly caught on in society, with psychologists and thinkers of the time putting on their thinking hats to try and figure out the core of creepiness, as well as its existential value.
Ernst Jentsch set out the concept of the uncanny, which was later elaborated on by Sigmund Freud in his 1919 essay ‘Das Unheimliche,’ which explores the eeriness of dolls and waxworks. For Freud, the uncanny locates the strangeness in the ordinary. What does that mean exactly? Well, let’s dive deeper.

Colorized Photo Of Rasputin With Tsarina Alexandra Fyodorovna, Her Children And Their Nurse, 1908
Not to sound like I have any kind of admiration for that guy but reading about him is very fascinating
There were so many lies told about Rasputin that historians cannot agree on what was really happening with him. I did some research a few years ago, but since I don't read Russian I just had to rely on secondary sources. I think people tend to gravitate towards the most salacious stories without reflecting on which ones are plausible.
...and I've read and studied so much about the family that I know everyone's name except the nurse....P.S. Rasputin was nuts, but the Empress' dependency on him stemmed from her desperate search to cure her son, the Tsarevich, of hemophilia. Alexandra was willing to try almost anything; Rasputin took advantage of that to wedge his way into the family.
Odd trivia: His daughter moved to the US and was a Rosie the Riveter at a Florida war plant.

Load More Replies...That poor family had such a terrible fate and I wonder what would've been different if that man hadn't been given the trust he had.
Let’s be honest though — Rasputin was not the downfall of the family. Russian politics and the gulf between the haves and the have nots was the issue, and the Tsar refused to deal with it.
Load More Replies...that expression… who could have foreseen that he’d turn out to be such a turd? /s
None of them deserved the fate given. Tragic & terrifying. Why is death so awful?
It was a gruesome execution and burial. The communists knew that the tsar's supporters were coming to try to rescue the family and restore the monarchy, thus the execution. But as my Russian husband explained to me, the vast majority of the Russian people suffered greatly under the tsars: poor living and working conditions, famines, and starvation. Nicholas loved family life and was indecisive when it came to ruling. Alexandra encouraged him to be merciless with the Russian people so they would respect his power.

Ok, so it does look creepy, but I'm pretty sure it is just a leaf. EDIT: On closer inspection, it is definitely NOT a trick of the light.
There seems to be an extra foot between the two middle kids. And the face looks real too. I think the simplest explanation is that there was someone really there, and they just kept saying there wasn't to make a hoax or something. More plausible someone lied than there would be a real ghost on the photo.
Where is this extra foot you speak of? I can only see the feet belonging to the children.

One of the most recent studies conducted was by Frank McAndrew, professor of psychology at Knox College in Illinois. He decided to explore the boundaries of this very familiar feeling by conducting a preliminary survey, which asked more than 1,300 people “what is creepy?” Surprisingly, the answers were fairly straightforward.
Subjects felt more creeped out when a person was not able to follow social norms and cues, with the biggest factor of whether someone was considered creepy being unpredictability. “So much of [what is creepy] is about wanting to be able to predict what’s going to happen, and that’s why creepy people creep us out—because they’re unpredictable,” explained McAndrew.
“It’s about the uncertainty of threat. You’re feeling uneasy because you think there might be something to worry about here, but the signals are not clear enough to warrant you doing some sort of desperate, life-saving kind of thing,” McAndrew stated, continuing to say that being creeped out is different from fear or revulsion.
Patient Brutally Restrained In A Mental Institution, France Circa 1900
They used to institutionalize women even at the whim of her husband. Hysteria, rebelliousness, or even refusing to have sex with her husband. We’ve always been a patriarchal society unfortunately.
This is absolutely true. In that era women were to obey and getting a doctor to declare them crazy if they wouldn't, was easily bought. It was also a way of warning other women/wives/daughters to keep them under controle...
Load More Replies..."This girl had mental issues - how can we help her?" "I know - lets try doing something completely f****d up and see how that works out..."
And mental issues back then might have just meant she talked back to her parents or someone else in authority.

Load More Replies...Wouldn’t their diaphragm collapse after a few hours in that position?
No, because she's being supported. Notice her arms are not above her, which would mean that they are not holding her weight. That would be the torture position, which would make it hard to breathe. There also appears to be a support cable or rope coming from above her and connecting to her waist. Lastly, her feet are firmly on the ground, so she isn't just hanging there.

I share similar pictures and quotes every time there is a vote to remind people what woman went through to get us the vote. The people that don't vote but who then moan about the government etc make me so angry!
Load More Replies...We should never forget what others have had to go through to make progress towards fairness and equality. Let’s not let people in power take us backwards.
We owe the Suffragettes so much. When they first started getting imprisoned they were treated semi-decently as they were "political prisoners". The government quickly changed their mind on that. The forced feedings were basically made into torture, as painful and humiliating as possible
We always thank our armed forces for their service. I would like to thank these women for their service. #VOTE
We need to bow before these women for what they suffered for us. They are our true heroines...
This should be so much higher. I saw a video where a suffragette threw herself in the path of an oncoming horse during a race, in order to draw attention to the suffrage movement; what a f****n' legend. The suffragettes were totally badass and we owe them SO much.
That was Emily Wilding Davison. She died after stepping in front of the King's horse during a race at Epsom.

OK, buckshot is very different a bullet, but this still reminds me of the time V.P. D**k Cheney went hunting with a lawyer and shot him in the face and he was relatively O.K.
Cheney was quail hunting. He was using birdshot. Tiny little pellets. If it had been buckshot it would have been much serious.
Load More Replies...Third eye blind. Amazing what the human body can endure and live through.
When you’re creeped out, your brain and your body are telling you that something is not quite right and you’d better pay attention because it might hurt you, as compared to feelings of fear/revulsion that manifest clear responses of fight, flight, freeze, and fawn, all thanks to hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline.
However, the physical sensations that come with the creeps sometimes mimic those of the spooks. In 2012, researchers from the University of Groningen in the Netherlands found that when subjects felt creeped out, they felt colder and believed that the temperature in the room had actually dropped. The chills anyone?
That physical response further heightens your senses and, as McAndrew stated, “You don’t know how to act but you’re really concerned about getting more information… It kind of takes your attention and focuses it like a laser on this particular stimulus, whatever it is.”
A Baby Found During The Clean Up Of The Chernobyl Accident Is Pushed In A Carriage By A Liquidator, 1986
This occurred in Tatsenky village, which is over 180 km (over 100 miles) from the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. It's possible that the baby survived, as the dose of radiation would not have meant guaranteed death at such a distance.
i'm just gonna take ur word for it and not search it up
Load More Replies...Given that yes, this child VERY likely survived with no ill effects (might even have even a reduced likelihood of cancer later in life*!), I dare make the comment: "Are you my Mommy?"
* Cancer rates among survivors of Nagasaki and Hiroshima were only slightly elevated among those living in the cities (chiefly, higher rates were caused by a 95% increase in leukemia for roughly two decades; overall cancer rates were increased 3% initially). Cancer rates among those living in outlying areas are actually lower than normal. (e.g., Sutou, Shizuyo: "Low-dose radiation from A-bombs elongated lifespan and reduced cancer mortality relative to un-irradiated individuals", 2018)

Load More Replies...We also had gift cards which show children being carried away in a basket by Krampus...and postcards showing pin-up girls getting a spank from Krampus were also popular for some time. Also, Krampus would visit kindergarden together with St. Nicholas. The scary thing is that nowadays Krampus has become a huge thing, masks are getting more and more Halloween-like...like pale face with blood-dripping mouth, THAT could easily give a kid nightmares!! Usually some people in Lower Austria, who adopted a distorted form of "Perchtenlauf", which is only traditional in western/alpine parts of Austria. I’m tying to decide if she was someone with poor luck or a murderer
Load More Replies...From a developmental perspective, this sort of deduction could be useful in elongating our existence. McAndrew explained: “We’re predisposed to see willful agents that mean us harm in situations that are ambiguous, but this was an adaptive thing to do. Our ancestors saw a saber-toothed tiger in every shadow and a slithering snake in the motion of the swaying grass because it was better to be safe than sorry.”
Therefore, we avoid things that give us the chills. Unless, of course, we’re playacting as such, similarly to the way we enjoy horror films. “It’s going to trigger a lot of things that scare and startle you, but deep down you know there’s no danger,” McAndrew said. “You can have all the creepy biological sensations without any real risk.”
However, humans have proven time and time again that we can’t fully trust our judgment. Psychologist Julia Shaw argues that, when it comes to creepiness, one important feature to note is attractiveness. People that are conventionally attractive are seen as trustworthy overall, which, as we’ve seen in the cases of Ted Bundy and Richard Ramirez, is a very big oversight.

Vibration Therapy, A Treatment For Headaches In The 1890s

Old Photo Of (Twins? Sisters?) With One Scratched Out. Cant Help But Wonder At The Context - Likely Late 1800's Early 1900's
Maybe photo were used in documents or something, so they scrached other person. In past people often used any photos for documents - at least there I live
Or the one sister was really mad at the other one and scratched her out.
Load More Replies...Possibly the one sister died and the family did not want to see the painful memories? :/
My grandmother had a box in her attic full of pictures with people scratched out, which were passed down to her by her mother and grandmother. All these women were raised Dutch Protestant. So, maybe a former religious thing being that photography was relatively new to the masses???
It is possible both of the children are dead in this photo. Early photography required you to sit really still for long periods of time. This is why some old photos are blurry - the subject moved. If the subject is clear, it means they're actually dead, propped up for a final memorial for the parents. Usually there's something holding the bodies up. Creepy huh?
I was thinking this too. The girl on the right looks like there's a stand behind her, like when they prop up the dead for photos. Maybe scratched out by someone superstitious.

Load More Replies...Atheist here, but this picture and the tittle is highly offensive towards millions of persons and doesn't reflect the reality at all. Even the Wikipedia is a good source for exploring the relations between the nazist and the Catholic churc, better that a picture of a random priest. Atheists, Catholics, Protestants, Ortodoxes... all them fought in both sides of the Nazism.
My great uncle was a catholic priest in the Black Forest region of Germany during the 1930s and WW2, he was against the nazis and hid from conscription in the forest. When they found him he was sent to fight on the Russian front- a certain death sentence in the winter of 1942 where was quickly killed. His sister, my grandmother fled to England in 1936 to escape the Nazis who she fervently disagreed with. Many ordinary people of all religions in Germany lost their lives because they disagreed with the Nazis, we just don't hear about these brave people in our retelling of history. One photo, out of context is very misleading. Nothing is ever that straight forward.

Actually, until fairly recently, dresses just symbolized youth. So young boys wore them, and it showed how women were seen as “children”( in the eyes of society). Gendering babies was also not a thing, because there was no way to tell the gender before the kid was born, and after the kid was born, the parents had no time. Plus, long dresses that were worn by very little babies kept them from crawling away. I should probably add that there is no hate intended by this comment it’s just a cool bit of history a lot of people don’t know.

Austro-Hungarian Sailors Wearing Anti-Flash Protection Gear, Designed To Protect The Wearer From Short-Duration Flame Exposure And Heat, 1916
I wonder if the design has a purpose or if the designer just wanted to be creative
Reminds me of the Twilight Zone episode where the greedy relatives' faces transformed into the shape of their masks.
What. This is clearly not a photo, looks rather like a realistic drawing. It also makes no sense that protective gear would have very large eye and mouth holes. Googling this kind of gear there are no images of it looking anything like this.
Actually, these are gas masks from the A-H Navy. My granpa served during the WWI and he had picture of himself wearing it. Gave us a lot of laugh before we lost a photo...

I was wondering that myself. She's referred to Charley McCarthy as her brother at least once before.

This is the school where the remains of over 200 children were said to have been found. Interestingly, the Catholic News Agency is questioning the validity of this claim, calling it a "media frenzy". In my opinion, this photo should be number one. No scary masks or mysterious photography glitches...just the real horror of what humans are capable of.
What those schools did was absolutely horrendous. I've read that they've found mass graves associated with these schools.

Child Labor Workers In The Early 1900's ;

For anyone else struggling to read (some words may be wrong, my eyes blurred!): You don't have to be grown-up to think breakfast is a pretty ghastly meal some mornings. Even five year old young ladies need a bowl full of fruit-colour, fruit-flavour Trix to change their morning outlook from grim to gay. When you're five (give or take a few years either way) you kind of fall in love with Trix and the way its bright fruit colours wink up at you through the milk. You become quite attached to the way that sparkly fruit flavour keeps demanding another spoonful, until pretty soon you're down to the bottom of the bowl. That's why Trix were born. To make good grain nourishment more fun. Mum note: How do you know what Trix can do, till you pour more?
Darn it I made my own eyes go cross eyed reading it and then click here to type it up and you beat me to it and meant I didn't have to traumatise my eyes reading it at all! Thank you for typing it though

Police Search Through Serial Killers Leonard Lake And Charles Ng's Property In Wilseyville, June 1985. The Bunker/Dungeon Where The Female Victims Were Held Is On The Right. Ng Was Already On The Run By Then As Lake Was Already Dead From Swallowing Cyanide While In Police Custody
They recorded the audio of their poor victims. I really feel for the officers who had to listen to those tapes. They were only caught because Ng was caught shoplifting
It always shocks me that a serial killer would take poison. I always though a narcissus person would never do that ... in the end they are all pathetic
Narcissists often end their own lives, because they believe only THEY are capable or honorable enough to do it. They usually have a ,very strong, belief that others would likely botch the event. Not all narcissists do, but that's the basis for why those who choose to, do so, especially criminals.
