The first thing that popped into my mind was The Master dancing as Rasputin in Jodie Whittaker’s last episode of Doctor Who.

Taking into account his usual way of life, he probably IS high on something on the photo. He looks comparatively tame here, though, if you compare it to the later pictures showing an unkempt man with extremely long hair and beard. Even then it is hard to understand what appeal he must have had ot not only have an affair with the tsarina, but also sleeping with most of russian nobility, if the rumours are to be believed.

I am also interested in Jef's response, and in the meanwhile I would like to add my two cents: I've read once memories of Matryona Rasputina, his daughter. While I must admit that she *may* be a little biased (duh, he was her dad, after all), I feel that what she wrote makes a lot of sense: that he was just a peasant preacher, smart, though illiterate, charismatic and deeply religious, who gained the favour of the Tsar and his family (as many gurus and holy men did with many monarchs throughout the history), and well... made enemies among the wrong people, because that's how court politics work. Sad story, really.

Most of what I found is that the truth is hard to find. Here are some things that might be interesting, though: He did survive being shot, stabbed, and poisoned, but the notion that he was almost impossible to kill have been exaggerated to bolster the notion that he was protected by Satan. Many people survive the same sort of attacks, which is why Russia (among other entities) have put so much effort into perfecting the art of assassination. His sexual exploits are almost impossible to describe with any certainty. The notion that he held massive orgies involving members of the royal family are inventions, but his daughter’s claim that he was completely chaste are not plausible, either. The truth is that he probably used his popularity and access to the trappings of wealth to his advantage in alluring some women, but there is no way to determine to what extent.
