Whether by warning or guiding you, they are intended to send clear messages that would make any perplexed citizen feel instantly at ease. Usually.

This Sign In My Neighborhood
Fair. I get pretty angry at dangerous driving too and in many places, 2nd degree murder can be punished by execution. BTW, I'm anti capital punishment, but not everyone else is.
I can relate. My cat got out, and this idiot barreled over him, and almost hit me. It was both devastating, and horrifying.
"Your familiy will bury what the police could scratch off the tarmac." Here, i corrected the sign.
I was having a walk with my brother and 3 year old niece when a lady pulled out of her driveway WAY TOO FAST and nearly hit me and my niece. I’m 13 by the way. I was able to tilt my niece out of her baby bicycle into the grass we’re she landed on the grass without being hit. The lady was on a call and was not paying attention. My brother was a few feet ahead. He came running over. By the time the lady need her call, parked her car, and got out, I had hit her car and picked up my niece. Lindsey was crying on my shoulder as I had her in my arms but she stopped crying when the lady entered with the biggest lashes I’ve ever seen! She went hugging me and my niece and she was so apologetic. Me the woman left, we went up the road and checked on my niece to see any physical signs of the woman hitting my niece. Luck her her, she did not hit my niece but there is a scratch in the paint on the baby bicycle. That day my niece almost died and I saved a life. Me and my brother was shakey for awhile.

It’s no secret that signs are everywhere we look. Most of them have a function and purpose, mainly to keep us out of harm’s way. We may not often think about it, but these messages play a crucial part in keeping us safe during our day-to-day lives. They inform us when to stop at an intersection, if there are threats ahead or when it’s safe to cross the road. But unfortunately, we get so used to seeing them that we don’t even bat an eye.
While we would never fear a stop sign or a road sign as we’re bombarded with these bits of information every day, you’d think that threatening announcements of dangers hard to imagine would make us stop and run the other way. Or, at the very least, make us consider what actually happened and what was the reason for their placement.

However, even the most terrifying or daunting signs that warn us of potential hazards and uneasy consequences if we refuse to obey sometimes get overlooked. And there are many reasons we ignore or even disregard these messages, whether we believe that we know better, think they don’t apply to us, or simply wish to add a dash of thrill and adrenaline into our daily lives.
Moreover, we humans have exceptional adaptability to tune out most of the awful and disruptive things happening around us. But that skill is downright useless on the road, as only a few milliseconds can mean the difference between life and death when you need to deal with troubles ahead.
An Eerie Underwater Cave Death Warning Sign
There was real case of fatality here. I can testify that inexperience scuba divers with massive ego are dangerous to themselves and everybody who are unfortunate enough to dive with them. Things could go wrong really, really fast. Respect the sea.
This sign is found in a underground cave in springhill flordia. The cave is very very dangerous.

One of the British divers said that the reason why there isn't a Cave dive rescue team is because it's so dangerous that sometimes divers won't even go in to retrieve a body.
That was one of the most powerful documentaries that I have seen. I knew that there was going to be a happy outcome, however, I had butterflies in my stomach the entire time when they were bringing the children out one by one knowing that the smallest mishap could lead to everything going wrong. I honestly think that has to be one of the most amazing rescue missions.

As an experienced cave explorer who never had the gumption to try cave diving, this sign is telling you the truth.
I thought the Reaper was giving the middle finger. Zoomed in and realized he was beckoning. Thought about it. Decided either gesture was appropriate.
Diving is a dangerous sport, but cave diving is probably amonst the most dangerous sports. So many deaths for so few people practicing.

According to a study in the Journal of Consumer Research, drivers react more quickly to road signs with symbols depicting motion. The researchers took a deeper look at whether different sorts of signs — particularly the ones depicting movement — do a better job of forcing drivers to pay attention to the road.
"Warning signs are static visuals, yet they can vary in their ability to evoke a sense of movement. For example, the children depicted in a school crossing sign can be drawn as if they were running or walking. We discovered that more dynamic warning signs lead to quicker responses and changes in behavior," study authors, marketing experts Luca Cian, Aradhna Krishna, and Ryan S. Elder, wrote.

This Restaurant Sign That Is Half Shadows
I like the lights for the sign looking like a predator's eyes.
It turns out that to truly make roads feel safe, they must feel dangerous. The researchers came up with five studies that examined how drivers reacted to movement on road signs. They used eye-tracking technology, surveys, and driving simulations and found that "higher dynamism" signs — think a running stick-figure pedestrian — did a better job of attracting driver attention and heightening risk perception.
In each study, the participants reacted more quickly and stopped sooner when signs had more dynamic symbols. This may, in turn, translate to more vigilance and attention from behind the wheel.
"While we have chosen to focus on traffic icons, our findings extend well beyond this domain. Since more dynamic symbols can impact behavior, increasing dynamism in recycling icons, packaging for health foods, and other contexts where behavioral changes are desirable should prove valuable for public policy and consumer welfare," the authors noted.

We need to support gun reform everywhere it’s a measurable threat.

"From evolutionary psychology, we know that humans have developed systems to maximize the chances of detecting potential predators and other dangers. Thus, our attention system has evolved to detect actual movement automatically and quickly," co-author Cian explained to the Atlantic. "Perception of movement within a traffic sign prepares the driver for actual movement."
"We would advocate that more dynamic traffic signs be used in contexts where faster attention and reaction times are needed,” added Krishna.
The Drowning Machine
Kyle Hill did a great video on this. The water will effectively entrap you over and over again, preventing your escape and leading to an inevitable death even worse than being killed with pineapples.
I have a phobia of weirs after someone told me a story of how a local man in the area I lived jumped into the water to save his dog which was being sucked into one, they were both slammed against the metal grate and died. I cannot exaggerate how dangerous these are.
Dams are outrageously dangerous, yet so many casual swimmers disregard the signs. Dams create a recirculating pool that essentially traps you due to the pressure of the water and pushes you under the water without any way to escape.

But this does beg the question, do signs with threatening auras convey the message? Marc Green, Ph.D., a human factor expert with extensive experience in perception, attention, and human factors, explained that warning signs, in general, often fail to change people's behavior.
"For many years, designers focused their concern on sensory aspects of warnings: color, shape, location, pictures vs. text, size, and so on. However, recent research suggests that effective warning design depends as much on the contents of the viewer's head as on the contents of the warning's message," he explained.

Load More Replies...When people stumble upon alarming messages, they have to decide whether or not to comply. "First, the viewer has general knowledge about the world and how it works. Second, s/he has a set of beliefs and expectations based on experience with the same or similar environment, product or technology."
"Lastly, the viewer enters the situation with a goal and strategy for achieving that goal," Green continued. "The goal can be specific ('I want to arrive at my destination as soon as possible') or more diffuse ('I want to feel good about myself')." So an effective warning sign requires the designer to understand what the observer "brings to the table".

In a previous Bored Panda interview, Frank T. McAndrew, Ph.D., the Cornelia H. Dudley Professor of Psychology at Knox College, mentioned that cursed and threatening messages we encounter in our daily lives make us take notice, whether we like it or not.
"We are programmed by evolution to intently focus on unexpected or unusual things in our environment. It is essential to determine if such things pose some sort of threat to us or not, and cursed images hijack the part of our brain that is responsible for protecting us," McAndrew noted.
The same goes for unusual things in our environment. "Novelty in our environment (i.e., new or mysterious things) automatically grab our attention," he said. In an evolutionary sense, "people who paid attention to new things did a lot better over time than people who ignored them, and we are the descendants of the people who were curious."
Thanks For The Warning
My great uncle was in the military and was about to have his photo taken while standing in front of a plane, the propeller was still turning. He hadn't been feeling well, and fainted into the moving propeller. He never came home.
When working as an EMT we would do "hot loads", which is loading a gurney onto a helicopter while the propellers are still turning in cases of dire emergency. It always scared the hell out of me everytime. We were always told not to stare directly at the propellers because of cases of people becoming almost hypnotized by it and walking directly into it. Not sure how true this was, but I wasn't about to take any chances....
I was at lake Shasta one year where this exact thing happened to an intoxicated young man.
propellers when running disappear into a grey circular fog. One of my teachers got out of the door of a private plane and walked around to the other side into the propeller going for her baggage. She was turned into mincemeat & hamburger where the blades hit her. Ugh.
I don’t fully understand this one. Perhaps a visual would help get their message across.

NOT WRONG. Not at all. You see someone doing something unsafe in an industrial space, say something. A few years back I had to say "SHAWN! What you just did is the most dangerous thing you can possibly do with those chemicals." He's now married with a kid. I like to think I saved him.
The cartoon figure really adds an extra touch of something something
We do this at work. Every employee has "Stop Work Authority" if they see anyone doing something unsafe. Our plant leads our company, 7 years without a lost time accident and we've had a few moments where work was stopped and a situation corrected.
According to the professor, when we can’t determine if something is good, bad, or neutral, we feel uncomfortable. "Our inability to categorize it will eat at us because we do not know how to deal with it, and this can be paralyzing if it is something that we cannot easily avoid," he explained.
"Being uncomfortable with uncertainty is a very adaptive thing, and it helps us remain vigilant in situations where we need to do so," the professor said. "People differ from each other in how comfortable they are with uncertainty, and someone who is not at all tolerant of uncertainty will be more stressed out than they should be over even moderate levels of uncertainty. I am not sure that there is too much that can be done about this, as it is a personality thing and personalities are very hard to change."
New Signs At School For Safety Against Shooters
yup :( my school went into lockdown because someone let in a bunch of highschoolers and the school assumed that they were armed. we later found out that there were there to beat a kid up. luckily they werent armed tho.
Load More Replies...Gun violence is the number one cause of death for children in the US, and because we have a useless, corrupt government, this is the best we can do: Lock the door! FML.
It horrifies and deeply disturbs me that a sign like this is even needed. I honestly don't understand the United States' logic. Innocent children get brutally murdered in a school and nothing is done. It happens again and still nothing is done to ban assault weapons. It is absolutely mind-boggling. The US seems to value gun rights over the lives of children and teens.
Load More Replies...I went to school in the 80s. You could only enter at the front doors, where the administrative offices were. They didn't buzz in anyone that wasn't supposed to be there. The kids learned quick not to open an emergency door to go smoke outside. The alarm would raise the dead.

Why don't you let in someone you know? Does this exclude classmates?
Ignoring the door also means walking into it twice a day. Perhaps the person who wrote the sign walked into the door twice a day, got brain damage and thought this sign would be a good idea.
Generalizing all Americans is close minded. Most Americans want stricter gun laws. But the NRA golfing with law makers while they make deposits in their bank accounts is the problem. Read. You Know When You’re In The Australian Outback When You See A Sign Like This
We have those signs here in the USA too. Also ones that warn you when highways are closed do to extreme weather.
There's a difference versus dropping a barrier during a snowstorm to close the highway. You could surely die of exposure if you blasted past the barrier and ended up in a ditch but this is more extreme. Even if someone finds you they may not be able to help. You could die stranded in 100+ heat if you run out of gas and even if someone finds you, you're still stuck there. The average diesel semi truck gets 4-6 mpg. Not many people carry a spare 50-80 gallons of diesel fuel just in case they run into someone who ran out of gas. If the only truck you see in 2 hours is a semi with a 125 gallon tank, they can't even let you drain enough to get to the next station. There is one rest area and zero towns along the way.

During the pandemic, when exercise was of the few reasons for leaving the house. I went for a on a walk to a man made pond. Quite nice, ducks, geese, water voles, etc. concrete path around the perimeter. Over the years I'd visited a hundred times, only this time it was late into a winters afternoon and it was dark. As I moved away from the road I realised It was pitch black!!! So while this sign seems a little redundant I would have very much welcomed it on that day. 😄
I believe this is a sign in Central Park NYC. Muggers looking for easy scores and homeless who just want a quiet place that's relatively dark to sleep are not individuals you want to run into because you took the wrong left turn on a pre-dawn jog.
Restroom Sign At A Croatian Restaurant
No, in reality Croatian men are born without heads, the women are allowed to attach the one they prefer.

There's a large cemetery near the new hot neighborhood in Denver (RiNo). Even though there are signs asking them not to, its a popular place to take dogs for a walk in the morning. These signs are up because you only need a couple inches of snow for someone to not pay attention and fall into a hole dug for the 9am funeral.
we went on a trip and there was a small cemetery right off the highway. we pulled off and went to look. it was from a huge mining accident in like 1927. they had a sign like this, except that the graves where sinking/collapsing. i did not want to stay for a while. new fear unlocked
The cemetery where my uncle (who died when he was three, when my dad was about 7) was buried in a rural cemetery had an 'old' and a new section. Even the grave where my uncle was had begun sinking and I just remember thinking how sad it was. It didn't seem like his was old enough for that, but there were many older ones in that section. I always wondered how often they got visitors.
Load More Replies...Well, at least if you fall in one and die your burial will be nice and convenient.
This Creepy Sign I Found In The Woods Depicts A Man Jumping Over Some Scary Looking Hands
Odd Sign Found In The Johnson Shut-Ins, Missouri
It's due to the flooding that occurred in December 2005. A dike broke causing a 15 foot of water to race toward the campground.
There's a hiking spot near here that has very similar signs, but the potential siren would mean the nearby nuclear power plant is about to splode.
It is actually a warning sign for a dike that broke near a campground in Missouri.

Im from Rio and no locals ever take that hike. If you visit the christ statue, take the train. Only the train. Hiking ir going by car you will most definetly get robbed.
Pfft.. If they were smart the first thing the robbers would take is the sign..
These are not just simple robbers. Rio is the home to the Second largest south American cartel and they started in the 70s.. So, these are not drug addicts or tiver waiting for an opportunity to rob, they are professional criminals specialized in robbing cars and tourists. Sign or no sign they will be there
Load More Replies...I used to live in Rio. It's dangerous if you don't know what you're doing. Like hiking the Christ Redeemer hill. So yeah, this sounds about right, if not a bit understated.
I'm safe, I'd probably burst into flame if I got too close anyway.
Except not. The train is the only safe way to get to the statue. The car Lane (lane? Street? Sorry english not first language) goes through a pretty isolated area making It perfect for robbers to rob you, or worse.

I’ve Never Seen A Hotel Pool Sign So Blunt Before
I dread to think how they found this out and to think it's happened enough to need a sign
This is pretty standard at pools I've been to. So many outbreaks of gastro because people think they are okay and don't think about others. Just like with sending kids to school/childcare, don't attend until 48hrs after last 'incident'.

I read somewhere that when a company gets sued more than 40 times their legal dept requires they include warning signs. For example, on a hair dryer it'll say "do not use while bathing" etc
You would think it would be after the first time rather than letting themselves get sued 40 times.

There are small deposits of uranium ore in the area and over the years attempts have been made to mine them. This has caused some areas to have slightly higher than normal levels of background radiation.
Hmmm...I doubt it. A warning sign with black print on a dark background? Caution...maybe...radiation?...nope.
An old test blast area for a-bombs must be to that direction. probably not radio active anymore - I think....

Well there was/is the Bodies exhibit and several years ago they got into a little trouble for improperly obtaining some "exhibits"; or rather they claimtheir source did. I’m not a fan of posts turning to anti-USA but I can’t help myself. Tell me you live in America without telling me you live in America.
I don't care what country you're from. I don't care if your country has school shootings, terrorist attacks, whatever. If the staff at the schools that your children go to don't have the means to protect those kids from any harm, using any force necessary. You live in a s****y country, your kids go to a s****y school and you are a s****y parent.
Not all places in the US have this sign, but its very devastating to know that in certain areas this is a thing.
How long until a member of staff loses it with a student and shoots them dead in a rage..
Wow, just wow. Another “tell me you’re American without telling me you’re American” comment, this is honestly so sad that some Americans genuinely think gun violence is normal and just expect this to happen at an elementary school :( radical idea but maybe y’all need some kind of regulations on who can and can’t own a gun? Maybe make sure people are mentally fit and sound of mind before owning a gun? So your children aren’t at risk of dying at school from gun violence every day? (Don’t hate me pls I know that’s considered a direct violation of American Freedom rights or whatever, it’s just exhausting)

The town I grew up in tested the air raid siren for one minute every day at 12:00PM. If it kept going it meant the bombs were about to drop.
My town does it at 8:30pm every night still as a leftover from WWII. They did stop for a while in the 90s and people hated it and they had to start over again.
