These bits of information are aimed to help you move around places and inform you where you're going. They let you know what you can do and, more often, what's off-limits. Whether by warning or guiding you, they are intended to send clear messages that would make any perplexed citizen feel instantly at ease. Usually.
Because sometimes, the warning turns out to be scarier than the danger itself. Of course, it's better to be safe than sorry, but some signs involve such specific and life-threatening messages that they instill fear, suspicion, and overwhelming worry in anyone who crosses their path. We're talking about oddly terrifying messages that remind us our vast world is filled with unpredictable hazards from which we'd like to stay as far away as possible.

I was having a walk with my brother and 3 year old niece when a lady pulled out of her driveway WAY TOO FAST and nearly hit me and my niece. I’m 13 by the way. I was able to tilt my niece out of her baby bicycle into the grass we’re she landed on the grass without being hit. The lady was on a call and was not paying attention. My brother was a few feet ahead. He came running over. By the time the lady need her call, parked her car, and got out, I had hit her car and picked up my niece. Lindsey was crying on my shoulder as I had her in my arms but she stopped crying when the lady entered with the biggest lashes I’ve ever seen! She went hugging me and my niece and she was so apologetic. Me the woman left, we went up the road and checked on my niece to see any physical signs of the woman hitting my niece. Luck her her, she did not hit my niece but there is a scratch in the paint on the baby bicycle. That day my niece almost died and I saved a life. Me and my brother was shakey for awhile.

It’s no secret that signs are everywhere we look. Most of them have a function and purpose, mainly to keep us out of harm’s way. We may not often think about it, but these messages play a crucial part in keeping us safe during our day-to-day lives. They inform us when to stop at an intersection, if there are threats ahead or when it’s safe to cross the road. But unfortunately, we get so used to seeing them that we don’t even bat an eye.
While we would never fear a stop sign or a road sign as we’re bombarded with these bits of information every day, you’d think that threatening announcements of dangers hard to imagine would make us stop and run the other way. Or, at the very least, make us consider what actually happened and what was the reason for their placement.

And there are many reasons we ignore or even disregard these messages, whether we believe that we know better, think they don’t apply to us, or simply wish to add a dash of thrill and adrenaline into our daily lives.
Moreover, we humans have exceptional adaptability to tune out most of the awful and disruptive things happening around us. But that skill is downright useless on the road, as only a few milliseconds can mean the difference between life and death when you need to deal with troubles ahead.

Everyone just needs to watch any of the documentaries about the Thai children who all were trapped in the Cave. One of the British divers said that the reason why there isn't a Cave dive rescue team is because it's so dangerous that sometimes divers won't even go in to retrieve a body.

I knew that there was going to be a happy outcome, however, I had butterflies in my stomach the entire time when they were bringing the children out one by one knowing that the smallest mishap could lead to everything going wrong. This happened at my local zoo when they had elephants. One of the older females didn't like the noise a bus was making when it lowered outside the enclosure so she cracked the windshield with a rock.
According to a study in the Journal of Consumer Research, drivers react more quickly to road signs with symbols depicting motion. The researchers took a deeper look at whether different sorts of signs — particularly the ones depicting movement — do a better job of forcing drivers to pay attention to the road.
"Warning signs are static visuals, yet they can vary in their ability to evoke a sense of movement. For example, the children depicted in a school crossing sign can be drawn as if they were running or walking. We discovered that more dynamic warning signs lead to quicker responses and changes in behavior," study authors, marketing experts Luca Cian, Aradhna Krishna, and Ryan S. Elder, wrote.

After moving to the Midwest from AK, I'll take the AK ones any day. You can see them coming and have a bit of a fighting chance. The ones here are silent and minuscule, and I only know they're out there because of the itchy welts that show up later. So may flying pests here! I miss Alaska so much!!

I like the lights for the sign looking like a predator's eyes.
It turns out that to truly make roads feel safe, they must feel dangerous. The researchers came up with five studies that examined how drivers reacted to movement on road signs. They used eye-tracking technology, surveys, and driving simulations and found that "higher dynamism" signs — think a running stick-figure pedestrian — did a better job of attracting driver attention and heightening risk perception.
In each study, the participants reacted more quickly and stopped sooner when signs had more dynamic symbols. This may, in turn, translate to more vigilance and attention from behind the wheel.
"While we have chosen to focus on traffic icons, our findings extend well beyond this domain. Since more dynamic symbols can impact behavior, increasing dynamism in recycling icons, packaging for health foods, and other contexts where behavioral changes are desirable should prove valuable for public policy and consumer welfare," the authors noted.

My town has a problem with a handful of locally well-known street rats that prey on tourist rental cars at beaches. They’re opportunistic in any way they can be, but usually pull smash/slash & grabs by cutting through the convertible & Jeep rag tops. They’re also know for sucking the glass pipe. I was telling one kid that the meth was going to rot out his teeth. He told me he was “hitting’ Ice” not smoking meth. That’s what it’s called on our island, “Ice.” This was the day I learned that a lot of the kids using it had no idea it was crystal methamphetamine.

Fun fact, one of my parents worked at a small hospital that handled the...run-off...from Broadmoor. This was at a time that the rest of the psychiatric hospital was being sold off, and converted into a rather large housing estate. The High Security wing remained. Two electronic gates, two rows of twelve foot fencing, ripped with razor wire. Two of the nurses got curious as to what the realtors were saying about this rather... intimidating...building, in the middle of all these new houses, and apartments. Posing as buyers they viewed a house, or two and asked, "What about that building? That one, right there, behind the security fences?"..."Oh, don't worry about that... It's an old people's home. Nothing to be worried about."

Dams are outrageously dangerous, yet so many casual swimmers disregard the signs. Dams create a recirculating pool that essentially traps you due to the pressure of the water and pushes you under the water without any way to escape.

"Lastly, the viewer enters the situation with a goal and strategy for achieving that goal," Green continued. "The goal can be specific ('I want to arrive at my destination as soon as possible') or more diffuse ('I want to feel good about myself')." So an effective warning sign requires the designer to understand what the observer "brings to the table".

In a previous Bored Panda interview, Frank T. McAndrew, Ph.D., the Cornelia H. Dudley Professor of Psychology at Knox College, mentioned that cursed and threatening messages we encounter in our daily lives make us take notice, whether we like it or not.
"We are programmed by evolution to intently focus on unexpected or unusual things in our environment. It is essential to determine if such things pose some sort of threat to us or not, and cursed images hijack the part of our brain that is responsible for protecting us," McAndrew noted.
The same goes for unusual things in our environment. "Novelty in our environment (i.e., new or mysterious things) automatically grab our attention," he said. In an evolutionary sense, "people who paid attention to new things did a lot better over time than people who ignored them, and we are the descendants of the people who were curious."

My great uncle was in the military and was about to have his photo taken while standing in front of a plane, the propeller was still turning. He hadn't been feeling well, and fainted into the moving propeller. He never came home.

When working as an EMT we would do "hot loads", which is loading a gurney onto a helicopter while the propellers are still turning in cases of dire emergency. It always scared the hell out of me everytime. We were always told not to stare directly at the propellers because of cases of people becoming almost hypnotized by it and walking directly into it. Not sure how true this was, but I wasn't about to take any chances....

propellers when running disappear into a grey circular fog. One of my teachers got out of the door of a private plane and walked around to the other side into the propeller going for her baggage. She was turned into mincemeat & hamburger where the blades hit her. Ugh.

We do this at work. Every employee has "Stop Work Authority" if they see anyone doing something unsafe. Our plant leads our company, 7 years without a lost time accident and we've had a few moments where work was stopped and a situation corrected.
According to the professor, when we can’t determine if something is good, bad, or neutral, we feel uncomfortable. "Our inability to categorize it will eat at us because we do not know how to deal with it, and this can be paralyzing if it is something that we cannot easily avoid," he explained.
"Being uncomfortable with uncertainty is a very adaptive thing, and it helps us remain vigilant in situations where we need to do so," the professor said. "People differ from each other in how comfortable they are with uncertainty, and someone who is not at all tolerant of uncertainty will be more stressed out than they should be over even moderate levels of uncertainty. I am not sure that there is too much that can be done about this, as it is a personality thing and personalities are very hard to change."

I went to school in the 80s. You could only enter at the front doors, where the administrative offices were. They didn't buzz in anyone that wasn't supposed to be there. The kids learned quick not to open an emergency door to go smoke outside. The alarm would raise the dead.

There's a difference versus dropping a barrier during a snowstorm to close the highway. You could surely die of exposure if you blasted past the barrier and ended up in a ditch but this is more extreme. Even if someone finds you they may not be able to help. You could die stranded in 100+ heat if you run out of gas and even if someone finds you, you're still stuck there. The average diesel semi truck gets 4-6 mpg. Not many people carry a spare 50-80 gallons of diesel fuel just in case they run into someone who ran out of gas. If the only truck you see in 2 hours is a semi with a 125 gallon tank, they can't even let you drain enough to get to the next station. There is one rest area and zero towns along the way.

My brother recently had some precarious times driving from Victoria to Western Australia. There were petrol stations a bit more often than this, but his car uses LPG. He said there were even some petrol stations that had LPG up until a couple months ago, but could no longer get hold of it. Thankfully he did make it through okay.

During the pandemic, when exercise was of the few reasons for leaving the house. I went for a on a walk to a man made pond. Quite nice, ducks, geese, water voles, etc. concrete path around the perimeter. Over the years I'd visited a hundred times, only this time it was late into a winters afternoon and it was dark. As I moved away from the road I realised It was pitch black!!! So while this sign seems a little redundant I would have very much welcomed it on that day. 😄

The cemetery where my uncle (who died when he was three, when my dad was about 7) was buried in a rural cemetery had an 'old' and a new section. Even the grave where my uncle was had begun sinking and I just remember thinking how sad it was. It didn't seem like his was old enough for that, but there were many older ones in that section. I always wondered how often they got visitors.

The town I grew up in tested the air raid siren for one minute every day at 12:00PM. If it kept going it meant the bombs were about to drop.

My town does it at 8:30pm every night still as a leftover from WWII. They did stop for a while in the 90s and people hated it and they had to start over again.

In theory, but it's a very strong oxidizer, chlorinated water doesn't smell....unless it's contaminated. That chlorine smell so many are nostalgic for is actually chloramines created by chlorine mixing with URINE. Chlorine GAS on the other hand, has a very pungent smell....much like household bleach, except household bleach has a low concentration, less than 10%

I wonder if they update the sign every time someone dies. We have signs on some dangerous roads saying how many fatal crashes there have been and they have removal numbers so the sign is always accurate.
