Ruth Gordon Schnapp, California’s First Woman Structural Engineer, 1970s
i mean, yes, but it took until the 70s, which is most definitely not awesome 😳
Load More Replies...And 50 odd years later a whole 13.6% of structural engineers in the US are women.
Well in your country. There were female structural engineers in Eastern Europe since the 50s
My aunt was a female civil engineer in the 1950s. Australia.
Load More Replies...Never knew that's what it's called, but yes, that screams 70s to me too.
Load More Replies...If you were to describe a typical '70s outfit, you’d probably mention one of the standard hippie looks consisting of bell-bottoms, a turtle neck, and some modest peace-sign-shaped jewelry. This type of bohemian fashion was all the rage in the first part of the decade.
Birthed by the counter-culture movement that encouraged everyone to “stick it to the man” and celebrated personal freedom, the fashion was carefree and fluid. The mood was created with flowy peasant blouses, maxi dresses, ponchos, and capes. The hair was long and natural; afros were in style. Men were growing out sideburns and proudly wearing mutton chops.
Natural colors and floral patterns took over for a while, too. Inspired by the new environmental movement, it moved away from the outrageous colors of the ’60s. Burnt orange, dark yellow, deep purple, and olive green were common in clothing and interiors.

I really like it. So many American neighborhoods are completely bland. There should be more color and imagination and even playfulness.

Why do you assume she changed her name? She probably grew up to be Amsterdam. /S
Load More Replies...from reddit; That is actor Sandy van der Linden and his daughter Radha. The history of this photo and how the subjects were identified is interesting. The photographer, Toni Riera, was living in Paris when he was 18 years old and decided to visit Amsterdam. While smoking marijuana on the lawn of Vondelpark he took many pictures because at that time the park was full of curious characters. Twenty years later he went to Ibiza and was hired as the photographer for Ibiza's famous nightclub, Pacha. In the 1990s the photo of the unknown hippie dad with his daughter was chosen from the pictures at the park and used for a Pacha poster meant as an homage to the Ibiza of the 1960s. It became widely known as a symbol of the island's hippie past. In the early 2000s Radha was visiting the island for the first time, she entered Pacha to enjoy the famous Flower Power party and found herself face to face with an immense image of her and her father walking around Vondelpark. The owner of Pacha, Ricard
That could have been my dad, with his long wavy hair and sleek features. He was a very handsome young man!
He looks very young, too. I wonder how old he was here?
Load More Replies...When it came to interiors, wood and rattan, both of which reinforced the natural feel, were really popular. Many swapped the outdated wallpapers to wood paneling that gave a warm look to their rooms while rattan was used in furniture such as chairs and tables. It was all tied together with velvet that helped to balance it all out by adding luxurious coziness to the atmosphere.
The emphasis of coziness is really notable when you look at the furniture that was popular back then. Curvy, cushy sofas were loved by many, while papasan chairs, egg chairs, and beanbags became lounging staples. Sunken living room designs or so-called conversation pits were popular, too.

The '70s were bursting with musical talent and innovations. Rock music was seeing a particular boom in the industry. Hard rock emerged with AC/DC, Kiss, and Aerosmith rising into stardom. Punk rock was also finding its audience with the Ramones, Blondie, and Patti Smith encouraging everyone to shun the mainstream.

Absolute twaddle. Load More Replies...Brought about by the disco music, the disco look also emerged in the '70s. The fashionistas were not afraid of showing off the body with revealing tube tops and halter neck styles becoming popular all over. Sequins were the go-to material, allowing bodies to shine under the nightclub lights. Short shorts, form-fitting pants, or long dresses with high slits were popular amongst women while men often opted for three-piece suits inspired by Saturday Night Fever.

Young. Yet made to look older with makeup. Then as we age it's the reverse. We're constantly sent the message we're either not good enough yet, or have become obsolete; no matter the immense talent that lies within each of us. She is beautiful regardless of any surgery, she was then, she still is now. Truley, for who she is, inside and out.

Talking about inspirational movies, one cannot omit the monumental work made during this decade. The young filmmaking voices such as Francis Ford Coppola, Steven Spielberg, and Martin Scorsese premiered The Godfather, Jaws, and Taxi Driver respectively, all of which rocked the movie scene.
14-Year-Old Melanie Griffith, At Home With Her Pet Lion, Neil,1971
Her mother, actress Tippi Hedron, founded the Shambala Preserve for large cats and a few other animals in Santa Clarita, Calif. I believe this was her first lion, saved after it was used in a film.
I'm glad Tippi did this. Poor Neil looks declawed. It's sad to think about what the movie animals of the past went through. If you don't want your heart ripped out of your chest, don't watch "The Paw Project".
Load More Replies...I wouldn't let my kid play with a lion, but maybe that's just me being overprotective.
Think how quickly a common housecat can turn on you. Remember a lion isn't only a giant cat, but a wild animal. You are not being overprotective.
Load More Replies...I can't but help think of The Young Ones when I hear the name Neil.
Heavy. Boom shanka. 🤣 That was the best show. My husband and I quote it constantly.
Load More Replies...Her family raised lions and filmed them for a movie called roar. One of the lions ripped Melanie Griffiths face.
I need to know the story behind this. Was this poor lion kidnapped from the wild or something? Did they really declaw it like some people say?
Not declawed, just trimmed back. Tippi would later go on to acknowledge how "incredibly stupid" it was to allow the lion free roam of the house(it would even sleep in the same bed as Melanie etc.). They were VERY fortunate that a tragedy didn't occur, and she really is a good advocate for big cat rescue... even if things started out less than ideal(remembering those WERE the 70's).

Genre movies also rose in popularity, with quite a few science fiction flicks garnering a lot of attention. The epic space opera, Star Wars, became an instant hit and gradually evolved into a cultural phenomenon. Close Encounters Of The Third Kind got everyone talking about aliens, a topic that was further explored with Alien at the end of the decade.

Platform shoes were very popular at the time. If you could dance in them without looking like a twit, you were a god or goddess of the dancefloor! According to current reports, Elton is 5ft 7½ inches or 171.5 cm tall and has always considered himself short. A short, dumpy kid with fat fingers, he's still amazed he ever made anything of himself (his words, not mine).

imagine later, the blonde girl will tell these kids "your feet on the seat, young girl ! " :D
The grit is the condition of the subway cars. In the seventies they were filthy, and there was a lot of crime on the cars and on the platforms and stairs. Graffiti is one thing, but the other stuff, including bodily fluids, was disgusting. That pretty much was NYC in the seventies; crime, garbage, bodily fluids, needles, junkies, decrepit buildings, whole neighborhoods that looked like war zones. They had the subways cleaned up by the nineties to two thousands, then they took a dip again. Depends on funding, I suppose. If they stopped putting money into Times Square and Broadway, they would go back to the shape they were in back in the seventies. Just have a look at the movie Taxi Driver, or look up NYC in the seventies, and you’ll see both Times Square and Broadway were full of strip joints, peep shows, dirty movie theatres, hookers, pimps, drug dealers, junkies, and thieves. New York was a run down, tawdry place back then.

I thought she was a redhead, or perhaps a blonde. Apparently not. (Most pictures of her are in black and white.)
Linda Ronstadt Singing The National Anthem At Dodger Stadium, 1977
Here’s the most obscure trivia you’ll read today: the Sidney Poitier film Lillies of the Field was made on the ranch owned by LR’s father. After completion, the chapel that was the plot’s center was demolished to prevent the area from being trashed by fans.
Linda was quite honestly the most versatile - simply the best of the 70s and 80s!

Twiggy was so gorgeous!! Named one of my dogs after her, as when we rescued her she was super thin but had the biggest most beautiful eyes!!

I do not lament the passing of Jim Morrison. He was a pretty horrible person. I know I'll get downvoted for this but the way he treated women is unacceptable.
Right up there with John Lennon, also a horrible, abusive, deadbeat

It was created as the more central cemeteries were becoming too crowded, but at first no one would use it as it was on the outskirts of Paris. The very first person buried there was a five year old girl called Adelaide de Villeneuve.
I think one can appreciate his band's music without getting into his personality, flawed as it was..

Never carpet in the bathroom!! Omg how disgusting!
Load More Replies...Just bought a house with that carpet in the bathroom. It was pulled up and binned the day we got the keys.
What kind of monster puts carpeting in the bathroom? Let alone that shaggy fare?
Kitchen carpet was nice. Had a thick rubber backing and was easy to clean. Then they changed it to cheap stuff and it was the grossest (70’s slang?) stuff ever. Per my parents. Also most bathroom carpet was made to pull up and wash. My Mom still had a small rug around the toilet that was changed all the time. Men in my family must be really bad shots.
I think most bathrooms have bathmats, to include the small in front of the toilet.

Check the smoggy sky. LA. Used to be able to slice the stuff and chew it versus inhaling it to breath.
If you went high enough into the mountains, you could see the yellowish brown smog line. It was gross, and smelled worse. I remember smog days where we couldn’t have PE class outside, and children, old people, and people with asthma, etc were advised to stay indoors. You couldn’t see the downtown LA skyline for all the smog. Believe me, it is way cleaner now than it was. Thank goodness for the catalytic converter, and other smog-decreasing devices and legislation.
