40 Expensive Things Whose High Price Tags Don’t Make Any Sense At All, As Shared By Folks In This Online Group
Many people, many minds. Especially when it comes to something as important as money and pricing. At different moments in our lives, we might believe some things are way too expensive, and then a situation may come when we feel like Shakespeare's King Richard claiming: "My Kingdom for a horse!"
In fact, every person has their own ideas about what is cheap, what is expensive and what should actually be cheap but at the same time, for some reason, costs as much as a private jet. You definitely don't need to be a PhD in economics to form your own mind on this.
There's a thread on Reddit where people try to figure out which things are actually too expensive for no particular reason. It is really popular with more than 22.3k upvotes and over 18.3k comments.
BoredPanda made a curated list with the most popular and witty opinions for you. So feel free to scroll down and have a good time reading, watching and of course commenting. After all, as we have told before: many people, many minds...

College textbooks.
I had a professor that was really against the college textbook industry and said it was a huge scam, so for the class I took with him he used a textbook that he wrote and provided a PDF version of it for free to all of us.
lilephant replied:
I had one require a book that he wrote himself….. but it wasn’t free and actually was similar in price to others. Ironically he was my ethics professor.
My Professor of economy gave us a 50 % off of his self written textbooks and allowed everyone not able or willing to pay the 50 % off to copy his books for use in his lectures (way before PDFs were a thing).
I honestly can't believe that nowhere in this post as of right now can EDUCATION be found. Now, college doesn't have to be free, but recently the prices have gone through the roof and based on this post, it seems to have been normalized.
Again, depends where. My kids can go onto further education for free in Scotland. Yeah they'd need a job for living expenses but everyone does unless their parents are taking care of them

Hi, I install and maintain headstones for a living. Preplan and PREPAY FOR THAT SH*T. Or at least make a will. It saves so much arguing later.
Almost nobody wants a gazillion dollars spent, but for some reason grieving peeps always feel like the $5500 casket that gets buried seems like a better deal than the pine box.
I have already arranged to donate my body to science... I don't care what they do with it, since I won't be needing it any longer. They cremate what is left and return the cremains. I have arranged to have those placed in a completely organic cemetery, in the middle of a 21000 acre nature preserve, where a small brass plaque and a tree will commemorate my passing. Total cost, about $350 and all arrangements are already made and paid for.
My 82 year old cousin overheard me say that I was donating my body to science, and wondered if they would accept hers. She was already in hospice, so we quickly made the arrangements, and less than a week later, she was gone.
Load More Replies...Funerals are not for the dead, they're for the living. The dead don't care (or, if you prefer to believe in an afterlife, there's absolutely nothing they can say or do a out whatever form the funeral takes if they do care)
True. I have said since I was about 12 I didn't want a funeral, but had to resign myself to the fact my family will want one. At least they know I want the quickest, cheapest thing possible.
Load More Replies...I have arranged to be cremated. I asked the facility to put my ashes in a speed bump so that I could continue to annoy people after I'm dead, but they declined.
I organized the cheapest coffin, etc for my husbands funeral, he was cremated. It still came down to a 3000 euro's so there went my savings down the toilet.
I used to just want to be thrown into a forest when I die, but noooo... that's "improper disposal of a corpse"... So here is several thousand dollars...?
Load More Replies...I have arranged with my son that when I die, cremate me and spread my ashes in the ocean. I would rather hang out with the sea life than sit on his mantle or in some graveyard and be long forgotten.
I want to be put in one of those pods and planted somewhere - I do not want whoever is left paying for an overly expensive box - save it and spend it at the bar, go get drunk, have fun and tell stories of how I aged with zero class and was a complete embarrassment but you loved me anyway.
In the mid-80s there was an advert for an insurance company (?) featuring various people "wanting to be" somewhere or something else. Like the little boy who wanted to be a slug. Well, one of them wanted to be a tree. That's me. When I die, I wanna be a tree (or at least the fertiliser for one)
Load More Replies...Compare prices from different funeral homes, ideally before you need them; ask for a natural burial or direct cremation in a cardboard coffin, or whatever else is available in your area, you don’t need embalming an a overpriced casket. Greetings from The Order of the Good Death.
My mom had my dad cremated when he passed ( Buddhist) we had the funeral, and I never knew that you had to pay for the casket he’ll be cremated in, $3000??!!
You don't have to. You can can rent the casket for the funeral. And then have them cremated and just a cardboard box. But they don't tell you that!
Load More Replies...They prey on people grieving, it is so callous. When looking at caskets for my father in law we asked why that casket was less expensive. His reply , well that one will eventually collapse on itself. I am with GoddessOdd, in a nature preserve. My organs are to be donated, not sure if there will be any takers!
If you donate your whole body, there are a lot of ways it can benefit mankind, after any useful organs have been harvested. If you search "natural cemeteries near me" you might find one as nice as the one I am using... https://www.prairiecreekconservationcemetery.org/
Load More Replies...Diamonds, baby! There are places that can turn your ashes into DIAMONDS! If it's a scam, I don't wanna know... I'll be dead and won't care! And will have gone to the great beyond thinking I'm gonna be immortalized as something so beautiful 😇
Ahhhh!! I forgot that's an option! I always told my mom if I died young I wanted to be turned into a heart shaped diamond
Load More Replies...my grandparents were the opposite. they set everything up beforehand, wanted the best caskets, biggest headstone cemetery would allow, etc. they had the headstone in place before they died and had a dedication on it from my father, my brother, and me. Like they signed our names at the bottom of their headstone. I thought it was hilarious, my dad was outraged.
My late husband was cremated and that saved thousands on his funeral, but I am a poor person and it was still expensive. It's worse when a loved one's death is sudden, because few people are prepared. You never know when death is coming so make your will and your preparations in advance, so you don't leave the financial burden for your family. What truly disgusts me is a funeral director pushing a grieving family to spend money they don't have. You're already not thinking straight and some unscrupulous people will try to talk you into spending twelve thousand dollars on a funeral. I'm relatively young (I was widowed at age 40; my husband was 38) but I have made my final wishes clear and I started a savings account for the expenses, though I haven't been able to add much to it lately. Those few dollars will at least spare my daughters some of the costs.
I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I think you should maybe make plans to donate your body. They'll treat it with the utmost respect, and you'll be doing a good deed to help the world. There usually is no cost, but you'll need to research and make sure, and find a not for profit organization. Usually they cremate (I wanted to just be dumped in the ground in a shroud, and will if my body can't be donated for some reason) and return the cremains to your family, if desired.
Load More Replies...Thankfully my family is pragmatic and we don't pay for fancy send-offs. Even then it's crazy expensive. For all the folks talking about body donation, check out a book called Stiff by author Mary Roach. Fascinating stuff.
I have always said throw me in the ocean. I know its not allowed but still I like the idea better then being cremated or buried.
I have also made the decision to have my body donated to science due to the fact that I do have a neurological autoimmune disease. From the very first time I’ve met my neurologist I continue to be told that I should not be able to do what I’m able due to the super aggressive “case” I have. That I make no sense. So I figure that if the research can make sense out of my so called perplexing nonsense. It might help others since my brain won’t be useful for me any longer..
My Uncle died & his wife lost her marbles because he was in the 15k...US...Casket, not 17k one she picked out. I almost came unscrewed...this was the same man who chucked his portion of my beloved Grandmother's ashes in roses next to house...where the neighborhood cats s**t. He was a straight up douchepacker, he gave his step kids my brother & I's inheritance & I'm hoping he was "mostly dead" when they closed the lid...thank you Billy Crystal. 😈
Ain't that a lot of crap! You can't even die without going bankrupt.. That's why I'm being cremated, hell I might even just jump in the ocean.
Answer to this? Cremation. Spread the ashes in their favorite places! Even then they try to get as much money out of you that they can.
Husband died suddenly during the plague. We only had a handful of friends and relatives in the area and no funeral was arranged, not that we could have one except 'online'. He was cremated. It was all over within a month. I've made it known I want the same when I die.
Lol we chinese or some asian countries have the superstition that we cannot bargain or negotiate price for such services. Doing such is seen as inviting another death rofl.
Paid $3.79 per mile to transport my father to where he'd be buried, over 650 miles. For his second funeral. Total cost of two 1 night showings-- $25,000
While you can, look into funeral costs and what is actually required. Some cemeteries require vaults in the earth for the caskets. This not required everywhere. In our state you can transport a body any way, anywhere once you have a death certificate. If you can find a natural cemetery you won't even need a casket. There are tons of options. Trying to do it "last second" is so difficult.
When my dad passed away, murdered in a city about 4 hours away from home, a funeral service company traveled from there to "help us" with everything, and they did help us out a bit. They had a contact in the police station and got my dad's ID info and address, which is how they found us, drove us to the other state, took us the proper officials and then took is to the funeral home to choose a casket and take.my dad he and all that, except they didn't say it would cost over $100,000 Mexican pesos. While a local funeral home, in our town, got us the casket, travel, delivery, and everything that it takes to bury someone, for around $20,000mexican pesos with a nicer, way nicer, casket.
I found out many years ago, that despite family paying a lot for a casket, if the deceased is cremated, they recycle the casket, it doesn't get burned.
I've already told my family to torch me when I die. No casket, no funeral, a beautiful celebration of my life with good music, good food, and good vibes, and scatter my ashes all over the world.
When my mum died, I went to what I thought was a local, independent funeral director. It turned out it had recently been taken over by a big company I despised for their behaviour when my sister's baby died. I told the company that I was looking for a coffin on Ebay or Amazon - I don't remember which one and he told me that if I did that, they would not carry out the rest of the activities associated with the funeral. I have since researched how to carry out a funeral without a funeral director and when my mother's body parts were returned several months after her funeral, I went directly to the crematorium and arrange it with them. Its cost a few hundred, instead of the thousands I had been quoted by the same company. Screw them, I would never use them again, if I have to!
I want to be dumped naked and with dental filling removed somewhere is a nice green Rainforest. If that offends wrap my body in an unbleached or old cotton t (op hemp) sheet.
Playing on a family's grief is the worst of the worst. In fact, I'd be in favor of government-provided cremations or natural disposal where any "extras" would be paid for by family and friends, or even ahead of time by the proposed deceased. But pickling a body and putting it in the ground, no matter what kind of container, is ludicrous.
My mom prepaid her head stone years and years before she passed. The third generation owners wouldn’t believe me over the phone, but I had a signed receipt by great grandfather. Saved a small fortune!
In Canada some of the large cities have memorial cooperatives that you can join for a nominal one-time fee (e.g. $40). This then entitles you to a low-cost cremation or burial and funeral service, if desired. Typically contracted out to a large funeral home and offered for a fraction of the cost - example a person I know paid $6600 for a funeral that would have cost $2200 with the membership.
You can legit buy a coffin at Costco. You can even get them online through Amazon or the manufacturer themself. That funeral home you're buying from will price gouge you to death (pun intended) Even your local "family run" funeral home is owned by a corporation and they're looking for $
I've asked to be burned and spread my ashes at my favourite lake and if in the afterlife I see a funeral for me, I'll haunt you, I don't want that. I recently discovered my parents made no mention of after death care in their wills, I was so angry at that considering their ill health. My husband wants to actually be thrown to wolves....
Pre pay and pre plan for that s**t my ass. I wasn't expecting to shell out $1300 to burry my infant. Only thing that saved us is my husband dug the grave. No one should have to pay to die. Not to mention in alot of states if the bill isn't paid for death of a child you can possibly be sent to jail for a year over it. It's all bs.
Funerals. I'm sure they justify it by it being a "One time event" like you only die once, so we can charge you as much as we want! Similar to Weddings. Why can't we just bury Mom in the backyard?
My dad always said he wanted to donate his body to the college he attended but, when he died, he hadn't completed the proper paperwork so they couldn't take him. The hospital helped us get in touch with an organization that accepts donated bodies for research. They picked him up at the hospital and transported him to wherever the research was being done. When they were finished with him, they cremated him and returned the ashes to me about 3 months later. (I could have chosen to have him sprinkled at sea.) This was all done at no charge to us, which was amazing because he did not have any money to pay for any kind of funeral expense. This is actually why he chose this route. The "funniest" thing was that, when I was filling out the paperwork, I could choose which types of research I was okay with having done and one option was "ballistics testing". I opted OUT of that part!
Cremation, is a God send when there's no will, and let's say your Mom, passes unexpectedly. She refused for years to make a will, thinking it will be like signing her life away, and she would die early. She was 74. We had zero money to pay for anything! We were told to go to DHHR, and they can help pay for cremation. My church, was very close to a man that owned a funeral home. He lent us a casket, and we were allowed to have the wake at my church. My mother's ashes sit on my brothers entertainment center, with family pictures around it. We talked about, me getting an urn, and splitting up the Ashe's. I might one day, but I'm scared done will spill if we do. I can visit whenever I want to!
Because of inflation at the moment it feels like everything. Why do I have to pay so much for food? Why is the gas so expensive? How will I keep sustaining my car? Will my wife and I ever own a home? It’s debilitating man
My heart really goes out to people just starting out these days. It was hard enough in my day, but things are almost impossible now. I think people will really need to turn out and make changes at the voting booth... trump undid a lot of the consumer protections Obama put in place, and without them, the rich get even richer (and not taxed, if the republicans have anything to say about it).

There is no reason to spend 30 bucks a month for something that isn’t even my choice.
I don’t want to bleed for 7-10 days . If I could I would just rip out my ute**s.
Edit: for all the people out there suggesting me stuff thank you but I don’t need it anymore. I got the IUD 3 years ago and I hardly bleed. I just use a panty liner now and it’s super cheap. This was just how much I use to spend back when I bought pads and tampons (I had to use both …. Very heavy flow )
Glasses! I saw an interview on 20:20 or some news show and the brand name frames rep they were talking to, when asked why they charge so much for things that cost so little to produce, roughly responded “the glasses are worth what people are willing to pay for them 🤷🏻♂️”
You can request a copy of your prescription and buy online. http://zennioptical.com is really good. And if you have any old pairs of glasses you like the look of, they can put new lenses in for far cheaper.

The lack of affordable housing is the consequence and failure of cities/counties not being more proactive in creating zoning laws that would require more density in new construction, fewer short term rental permits of non owner occupied homes, and limits on for-profit ownership of more than a few single family structures.
Housing is such a volatile market lately... and prices just keep climbing. The lack of low cost homes and rental accommodations makes a real difference in quality of life for ALL of us. Cities who can't house their workers become dangerous for everyone...especially the people experiencing homelessness who are often preyed upon.

Oh that's a good one. I get that just because it's a digital item that doesn't mean the author and publisher shouldn't make money off it, but it makes no f**king sense for the ebook to be $2 less than the hardcover. There's significantly less costs to the publishers with ebooks, why do they cost so much?? It's so f**king annoying to go on Amazon and it's like "$36 new hardback, $30 new paperback, $28 ebook, $10 used hardback". Why would I want the ebook when it's that expensive?! And I saw this as someone who is incredibly low on space for books and who doesn't even mind reading ebooks.
This. Why am I spending $12 on the Kindle book when I can spend $5 to get a used paperback? You're screwing up your own business model, people; I guarantee it costs more for them to ship me a hard copy, sharing some percentage of the price with whatever third-party seller I picked, than to download a file to my device, which I also bought from them.

Hearing aids.
Zelda_cat22 agreed:
As an audiologist, I 100% agree! Unfortunately the prices are the way they are due to two problems. One is most clinics “bundle” services. This is mostly because insurance doesn’t like to pay for our testing or rehabilitation/counseling we provide. Also-if you’re a small clinic the manufactures that make the hearing aids sell them at a higher price to you. For example, a small office might pay $1,500 for a pair of hearing aids. Whereas Costco, who can buy a lot more, only pays $100 for the same hearing aids. Its sucks because to become an audiologist you have to get a doctorate. You go through all that schooling just to end up “selling” hearing aids. One of the biggest reasons why I’m not practicing right now.
Running for office in America.
The cost to run a successful campaign in America for virtually any state level or higher political office is simply unattainable for the common person and prices out anyone but the ruling class of oligarchs and those with connections to it. Sure there examples of candidates outside the typical wealthy and ingrained political establishment, but they are the rare exception, not the rule.
With US House races costing over $2 million and Senate races costing over $16 million the average person, no matter how well educated and how well qualified, is automatically eliminated without a vast amount of personal wealth or connections to the individuals, corporations, and parties that do hold that power. So the halls of congress and the seat of power is never filled with our best and brightest, but instead those with the wealth to attain that power and the conviction to maintain that status quo at virtually any cost to the people.
This is a big part of the reason campaign reform is so important... nice normal people can't successfully run most of the time.
Drugs. They say it's to pay for R&D but there were meeting minutes leaked from a big pharmaceutical company where they were like how much should we charge for this drug? $20? How about $50? Why not $100? Why not $300??? So they went with $300/pill.
The real kicker here is that most R&D is funded by the NIH, or in other words OUR TAX DOLLARS. This needs to end ASAP
Fresh fruits and veggies in comparison to a McDouble
It amazes me, not being American, that it does cost so much less for junk food there than fresh food!
Buying and/or selling a house. There are so many people with their hands out that literally push paper and make a few phone calls. Total scam
And it's always a percentage of the selling price. Right, I'm sure the work is twice as hard when the price is twice as high.

Someone tweeted about pirating Photoshop and Adobe liked the tweet. It wouldn't surprise me if Adobe was releasing the cracked versions online to get more people using their products. Several other companies have adopted that business model of giving out a freeware version and then charging businesses for the premium.

That’s where I’m gonna have to disagree with you. What you are generalizing might be true but most designer clothes, while might not be worth their price to the penny, are still made with high quality material and a lot of designer products are hand made which would make them more expensive. Like the $700 Gucci watch I have is made with very good fabric and high quality silver. Also the Gucci wallet I have is made also with high quality fabric and real Italian leather. I could keep going but my point is that some products might be what you described but most aren’t and there’s a reason they’re that price

Modern Art, like, wtf how does a boulder cost $2M!?
MagentaLea answered:
Easy just title it Tax Evasion.

Also actual boulders that aren’t art, if you want some rocks in your yard those things are expensive but someone found it for free in the wild and didn’t have to feed it or anything until it got to your house
Any art only has the value people are willing to place on it. If you are willing to spend $5m for a red circle in a blue square painted by a famous person, bless you. How much will you pay me to do the same thing? It's often more about the snob appeal of the signature than about the actual art.
Sofas or "Couches" for others. A basic timber frame with some fabric and cushions on it and I need to get a loan out to afford one.
I made my own, because I wanted something animal friendly. It still wasn't cheap, but it looks great and is totally indestructible.
Oh, I’ve got one. Delivery apps. Specifically when the restaurant I ordered from last night charged me $1.50 to have NO cheese on my sandwich.
Call the restaurant. Plenty of restaurants do their own delivery, and they are usually cheaper than Uber eats. Uber comes in and promises more customers but they pay the restaurant less for the food and still charge the customer more! If you call direct, you can save a fortune and the restaurant makes more money too!!

Amen. And it's not like they're even worth it. I'm an FCA tech, and I bought a Hyundai cause I got every single option and more for like 20k less.
I'm not with you guys on this one, I love mine and it was worth every penny!
Being born and living. You get out of this cradle od warmth and safety only to end up in this ugly and dangerous world, there's already a price given to your arrival, your worth is judged day after day, years after years, you end up having a great life, not one where you have all the things you want, only to end up retiering, get a meager check each month and then die, which you will have prepared in advance because dying also has a cost.
Child birth in general! State governments are ok with forcing people to have children but won’t help out on the cost and care afterwards.

anything made by Apple

The Apple USB-C to 3.5 is by far the best value DAC on the market for $10.
And the M1 MacBook Air is literally one of the best laptops on the market, and it's well below $1000.
And considering the longevity of iPhones, they're not that expensive either. Though they certainly aren't cheap.
PlayStation 5. Moderately better graphics it the only upside to getting it. Way too overpriced.
How about when you buy a game and you have to have a subscription to even access the video
Vegas charging a $50 resort fee on top of your nightly rate
It isn't that hard to not go to Vegas. I've been doing it my whole life.

Skiing! Equipment has no right to be as expensive as it is, and lift ticket prices can be atrocious.
puns_n_irony commented:
You’re vastly underestimating the operating cost of even a small ski resort/mountain/hill.
Many go under because they don’t have the money to operate even at the rates you’re complaining about.
Equipment is expensive because 1) low production volumes, 2) extensive R&D, 3) exotic materials like carbon fiber and exotic metal alloys (on higher end products).
The only area I will totally agree with is outerwear prices, those are a racket.

Indian food. Don’t get me wrong, it’s delicious. But why so expensive?
Ancient-traveller commented:
It's very Labor intensive and spices are expensive. I know an Indian who wished he could open a Chinese or a Thai restaurant, but no one would buy from him.
Living in New Jersey
Try living anywhere in California! I live in Northern California and it is wicked expensive here. A 2 bedrm, 1 bath, 900 sq ft apartment goes for around $1600+. Gas is well over $5/gal. Groceries are astronomically high. It's crazy and I can't wait until I can move later this year!
Electric vehicles, especially in Australia as our government is in bed with petrol magnates and so adds taxes onto the already high price.
I dont know if you have them there but Dacia has a lot of "relatively cheap" EVs

These days you have to pay a stinking subscription fee for it. It's like they went "we don't need to charge you for this but huh you'll pay it let's do it". They're not that expensive I guess but considering it's a service they could offer for nothing, it's stupid
To be *at least slightly* fair to them, old online games were pretty much all peer to peer connections, the most the game really did was find your opponents. That's still common in PC games but console versions often set up central connections. I doubt it justifies the cost per person, but at least they also throw a bunch of free games in.

I saw a US bank offering a 'generous' 0.5% interest rate recently and wondered how anyone could think that is OK. I live in South Asia. My new account has a 6.5% interest rate, which is actually quite low for here—but it sure beats the USA. I didn't even realize when I signed up for it that I could actually qualify for a savings account. When I was growing up, interest rates were more like 10%. 20 years ago, a jumbo CD brought in 20% interest. People complain about prices being high where I live, but I am paying $200 for a little cottage overlooking a lake, and maybe another $100 a month for food, so it's much more livable than the USA, Canada or Europe. I'm happy to live a simpler life. Medical and dental expenses are much more reasonable here, too.
I don't know how it is elsewhere, but most banks here make all their money on loan/credit card interest, with a smaller amount on fees and such. Despite it seeming like fewer people can afford things with their own money, I think it's also the case that fewer people can or will get credit cards, so they had to lower interest rates on cards, and offer Cashback benefits, meaning they also had to lower positive interest rates on debit accounts. That's really me taking a stab in the dark, but I know the only reason I signed up for a credit card at all was 2% cash back on purchases, and I do not plan to leave a balance to charge interest on.
