“No Ordinary Eyes”: 30 Amazing Moments Captured In Photography
There's a Facebook group called 'No Ordinary Eyes' and it's a gold mine for anyone interested in the days gone by.
According to the community's 'About' section, it encourages people to share fashion, street, and documentary photos from the past that "capture the essence of life and humanity in all its highs and lows." And they do!
The 322.6K members (among whom there are also masters of the craft, such as photographer Mykolas Juodelė) regularly post rarely seen images that transport you back in time and offer a new perspective on history. Here are some of the most memorable ones.

No kidding! And here you know it's a real photograph, not a still or screenshot from a video.
Load More Replies...Quite the achievement for a Japanese person in 1950 America actually....
The photo was taken in Kobe, Japan and it was entered into a photo contest run by an American magazine.
Load More Replies...Wait isn't this the hot water uh challenge that people did in which hot water became frozen when you threw it in freezing temperatures? And some people ended up in the hospital..
And here I am, who can't even make a snow ball that doesn't fall apart mid-flight ...
The problem might not be in you - when we get snow where I live, it's like dust. If you get enough snow.
Load More Replies...Incredible!!! Such talent and I bet the women's talent were dismissed.
Long ago, we shared our house with an artist friend of ours. No normal snowman for her - she handcrafted a life-sized, incredibly detailed female elven snow angel. I am still kicking myself for not getting pictures of it. I should check with the other folks and see if any of them managed to get any.
"Washing" is quite an overstatement. The Mekong is among the most polluted rivers in the world. Apart from chemical pollution, the river is also one of the strongest contributors to plastic pollution of the ocean with an estimated contribution of over 40.000 tons of plastic per year. During most of its route through China, Cambodia, and Vietnam the river is used as an open air garbage dump and sewer, with wastewater from industries, pig farms and urban sewers water being dumped into the river without any treatment. The water at the delta has extremely high concentration of cadmium, lead, mercury and arsenic and the extreme eutrophication is killing off the fisheries in large swats of the river.
I bet those ladies didn't find it all that magical with their butts in what looks like really cold water.
They look like they’re wearing beautiful skirts and dancing in the water!
You can tell what direction the prevailing winds came from for the last 60 years.
Absolutely stunning photograph, but to me it looks more like the edge of a road or field than a 'forest'. Small quibble, beautifully evocative shot.
The orange in front is trying to rub out the brain cell.
This is especially cool to me because Chefchaouen is famous for its blue hues, but this photographer chose B&W as their style.
Looks like my street, country living in TX. They are everywhere, luckily, all of us are animal lovers and we have caught and fixed them, and they have food and shelter in more than a few barns...🐈🐈⬛🐾
I think the photographer ran up real quick and punched the previously sleeping cat in the face and then stood back real quick and took the pic. There are people out there that love punching cats in there face and then taking pics of the then abused cat. The photographer should go to jail for this assault. Some people kids huh?
This extraordinary picture would make a great oil painting and a watercolor as well. However, the photo would have looked better without the tourists in it.
Looks like my old Oma in Germany preparing a meal back in the late 1950s.
They had bells on cat collars back then already and they STILL sell that c**p? Why???? It's like you running around with a flashing light on top of your head blasting fart noises.
And then we have people complaining that children can't go out to play due to lack of open spaces ☺️
He's muttering to himself "Mum said to play the violin, but NOOOOOO, I had to go for the double bass..."
Load More Replies...I was in Guatemala and saw a Mayan man going up a steep hill with a toilet on his back and the strap across his forehead. He had stopped to admire the scenery below and had a very wild smile on his face. One of my favourite human-memories.
So, that guy must be the one who coined the term "Porta potty"!
Load More Replies...Chris Franz and Tina Weymouth were the drummer and bassist, respectively, from Talking Heads. They formed Tom Tom Club initially as a side project, I think. They were also married.
They’re still married. Forty-six years!
Load More Replies...How is 1981 "the old days?" I swear I was 16 years old yesterday in1984. Who is this mature woman I see in the mirror? She has a few wrinkles, a few gray hairs, her body isn't slender like it was in the 1980s. She's familiar, but not how I see myself at all. I miss me.
Time has changed, not the trend, but only the size.... Today people carry iPod ☺️
You can hear her voice on pretty much every other commercial on TV lately, since every brand is using Genius of Love in their ads.
Spent my whole life thinking shepherding was a peaceful easy job. My bad!
Sheep are thinking up the hill...down the hill, every day it's the same.
Natural obedience! Bet cha can't count all these Sheep before falling asleep!
Better than any overpaid professional player pics. The beautiful game.
Weird AI or weird Al? It's important because a capitalized »I« can easily be taken for a lowercase »l«......🤷🏽 🤭 🧐
Load More Replies...At the time this probably seemed like a mundane city-scape. Now it's a visual time capsule. The gritty feeling adds to the mood. I'm intrigued and wish there were more images to see from this session.
I was gonna say probably looks nearly the same now, apart from the clothes. But I actually managed to find the spot and well there is a Starbucks and a McDonald's. .. but as soon as you pan up (you can see the window where she was lying) it got that timeless feel again. So it is mainly the ground level that is modern. I could half make out the street sign (starts with lange, then a long word and with the options given by maps only one fit, and as soon as I knew the word I could read /make out the entire sign), then I scrolled through the street. anyway without further ado. Dropped pin https://maps.app.goo.gl/E7r92cx1BdFLG7bf8 the street view of this exact spot, turn to face southwest to get the same view as her
Load More Replies...Found the actual exact spot! Turns out I have been there. Below the apartment is an McDonald's now. I could make out part of the sign and in maps only one option starting "lange" made sense lengthwise and then I could actually make out the sign. Then used street view and checked the intersections and within 3 minutes of looking at this picture I found the spot! (The disinvestment building in the background helped pinpointing it). Turn facing southwest to get nearly the same as her (but on ground lvl) and turn around and pan up to see the protrubding) windowsill she was lying in. Dropped pin https://maps.app.goo.gl/E7r92cx1BdFLG7bf8 Pretty awesome to have found the same spot, even more so that I have been there!
For those that just want to know the street name and not go to maps. It is "Lange Leidsedwarsstraat" in the picture I believe it has got the old spelling Leidsche instead of Leidse.
Load More Replies...Reminds me of a scene in the movie National Lampoon Christmas Vacation.
Now I know what it must have been like to get sent to Siberia as punishment.
The twisted reflections look like monsters trying to eat the others.
I love the patchwork of colors, the repeating shapes, and the reflection that adds so much depth. Even the harsh lighting works as it flattens everything. Very cool.
Not really. It's an emergency situation, and they are being given free food. So they are still better off than a large percentage of the world.

Turtle island is the American way. This is not it. This is the ultimate portrayal of the colonizers lie
I think one of the highlights of old street photos I love that gets overlooked is the lack of any garbage, leaving naturally clean lines and unobstructed imagery.
This should be much higher. Beautiful saturation of b&w, amazing composition, strong lines. The whole image is captivating. ❤️
Oh I LOVE the lines and contrast in this image. My eyes dance around the image finding new details to appreciate with each pass.
This one looks like those impossible paintings, with stairs going every direction at the same time.
And creepy. Not the girls themselves, but them being asked to stand like that, they clearly don't feel comfortable.
Load More Replies...I had a Vespa 150 at the same age in 1976. My brother used it one day and didn't lock the steering and it got stolen.
Load More Replies...If humans could learn to live in the moment, fully, like this. Oh how we could cure the world of nonsensical distraction
Makes me shiver & wonder if this is how the outside looks right before entering the gates of hell!
Outstanding photograph. Too bad that telephone pole had to be placed there awkwardly.
That elegant automobile is a Citroën Traction Avant. Not sure of the year.
You hummed the Jaws theme … you know it (I can show myself to the door)
These are wonderful. Especially when you consider that most were done pre-digital era when there was no way to preview your shots and you were limited by the amount of film you had on hand. Remember those days?
