By definition, odds provide a measure of the likelihood of a particular outcome. Sometimes odds are very likely, like the fact that nothing good will come out of 2020 (and thankfully, we are almost past it!), and sometimes not so much.
But on very rare occasions, odds-defying things happen against all possible likelihood, proving that after all, this world of ours is inherently random. So this time, we’re taking the ride of a lifetime featuring this selection of nearly impossible odds as presented by the r/nevertellmetheodds subreddit.
Created in 2015, the online community has a whopping 1.7m members who are all in for bizarre and wonderful chances that shouldn’t have happened. The subreddit’s description says it’s all about “Nearly impossible feats of achievement, those with a great degree of difficulty or incredible odds,” so let’s find out what exactly all this fuss is about.

My uncle married a woman who had been adopted at birth. After they married she started a new job and moved into his home which was about 45 minutes from where she grew up. She started searching for her birth mother a few years later and it ended up being a lady she had become friends with at work. The fact that they shared adoption in both of their pasts is what brought them together as friends.

They considered letting go of him since they all assumed he couldn't possibly have survived and the engineer and flight attendant were getting injured keeping hold of him. The Co Pilot was worried if they did he'd go right into the engine and they'd be in even worse trouble so they had to keep hold of him until they landed.

I saw a documentary about this incident. At the speeds they travelled at, this poor guy was flapping against the outside of the airplane like a piece of clothing in a storm. The sounds were horrible.

Humankind is such a short lived species. 9000 years seems like alot but it's really just a barely a blink of Earth's history, stars and space. It's fascinating that this lineage stayed in the same place. Ozzy has neanderthal lineage and i have a suspicion my ex had cro magnon lineage because of the shape of his skull.

Arthur Priest was onboard all 3 ships too, he was a stoker & on Brittanic was onboard the same lifeboat as Violet when it hit the propellers. Both survived by jumping into the ocean & were pulled onto another lifeboat.

Here is what happened. His military company was in a meadow, training. The commander saw the plane and yelled to everyone, follow me. They ran down a road to a crossroads and they turned right. But the guy we are talking about had to stop and tie his shoe. He got up, didn’t know where his company went and turned left. Fast forward to when the bomb drops. This guy has been looking for his company EVERYWHERE, and doesn’t know what to do. Then the bomb drops, and part of a building partially collapsed on him. He was pretty ok tho. The radiation reflected off the white cement and only very little traces of radiation got in. Once he got out of the rubble, he could see the dead and melting and he went to go back to his company. He reached the crossroads and turned right. While walking down there, he saw his dead, melted company. There is a YouTube video about this.

Okay, this is even more impressive than the guy who survived his own ship sinking, made it to another ship that was also hit, and then, once again to another bloody ship! I think surviving the 2 nuclear bombs like this is far more impressive, not that the sailors achievement wasn't impressive, it was, but the 2 nuclear bombs!

That's wonderful. I'll bet you feel a real connection with that photo on the bike, bc you know someone who loved you took it. When I found an old photo of mom and dad I wondered who had taken it. They were sitting in his chair but the shot was taken at his eye level....and he looked so very happy. Then or dawned on me about the 110 camera I received from him as a kid....about that height. And my heart was so warm when I realized that most likely I took that photo and that my daddy (who passed when I was nine) was smiling at me

I bought the diary of a high school girl written in 1928 on eBay. In the diary she talked about getting her senior photo taken and mentioned the name of the photographer. On a whim I googled the name and found her actual senior photo for sale on Etsy. (knew it was her from seeing it reproduced on yearbooks.com) So now I have both her diary and her photo.

Ahhh...Chicago. I miss my old life. But this image is not altered. Once (before 9/11) we thought we were under attack. Another time one of our neighbors started running down the street with no shoes on shooting a gun because he thought someone was shooting at him. Nobody was. It was the crazy downtown simultaneous lightning strike that we were all yelling about. He was the nicest unhinged neighbor we've ever had.

Manufactor had extra fabric from shirts and used it to make curtains. You'd be surprised how often stuff like this happens. Say the wholesaler of the shirt has orders for 100,000 shirts like she's wearing and shipping 20,000 a month. After 3 months, the retail stores see they have a stockpile of this shirt because it's not selling well. They cancel their remaining orders because the cancellation fee is cheaper than buying another 40,000 shirts. Now the wholesaler has all this fabric leftover and needs to sell it.

There is an entire community of albino deer in Upstate NY, by an old military base. They are protected and in a (very large) sealed off area. They are beautiful. I wonder if this pic is from around that area.

The deer in upstate NY are not albino (they don't have the red eyes), their white coloring is due to a set of recessive genes for all-white coats. The isolation of the herd causes high levels of inbreeding. When the base was still active no one was allowed to shoot/hunt the white deer and even now you must have special permission and are still not allowed to shoot the white deer. It is the largest population of white deer in the world (around 300). The military base is called the Seneca Army Depot and is located between the Finger Lakes of Seneca and Cayuga (I'm from the area)

This is called a 22° halo- an optical phenomenon that belongs to the family of ice-crystal halos. Its form is a ring with an apparent radius of approximately 22° around the Sun or Moon. I have seen this once in my life and it was incredible!

I'm seeing dually layered wall. The original wooden fence looks scorched, while the inner stone masonry kept the wall from "breathing." No air circulation means little will burn. Good design. That's likely what saved their home.

That's terrifying... I live in the UK, and wildfires, though they do happen, are never as severe and never threaten so many peoples lives in this way, and I couldn't imagine living with a fire mere inches from devouring my home.

I like how it says "to the California fire" as if there's only ever been one (major) fire in California and it's not something that happens regularly all over the state. Also, it's great there is no structural damage from the fire but if a wild fire ever gets this close to your house it's almost always severely damaged from the soot and smoke and will likely have to be completely gutted to fix. Wild fires suck.

When I first moved out of my house and got an apartment, I'd gotten an amber alert the night I'd moved in. At the time, I didn't know what an amber alert was, and, since it was 1 in the morning, I just ignored it. Looked at in in the morning after figuring out what an amber alert was, and turns out the child that had gone missing had lived in the same apartment complex. Moved out immediately.

Sorry if this is dumb, but how is this a coincidence? An AMBER alert is for missing children, someone looked at the sign, looked at the car near them, saw a white Nissan with the same licence plate and reported it to the police. I mean, that's what the signs are for, right? So it's likely that they would be found near one of the signs. Or is there something else I'm missing?

I found this about the man. A man who was wedged between rocks in Cambodia has been rescued after being trapped for nearly four days. Sum Bora slipped into a hole between two rocks while trying to pick up his torch, police said. The 28-year-old was collecting bat droppings - known as guano - which can be used as fertiliser and is sold by farmers looking to increase their income. Mr Bora's family began searching for him when he did not return after three days. His brother found him and alerted authorities to his location in the Chakry mountain jungle in the north-western province of Battambang. Around 200 emergency workers chipped away at the rock surrounding Mr Bora for 10 hours before he was eventually freed at 6pm on Wednesday. Mr Bora was immediately taken to a hospital. He was extremely weak following his ordeal and was stretchered out of the crevice.

I sincerely hope that you sued them or were able to hold them accountable! Not just for yourself but for any future patients they may have! By holding them accountable you may save other people's lives as well! I had something along the same lines, thankfully not cancer though. Had hurt my back, attended physiotherapy for months, going from one therapist to another and back again before being referred to a specialist physiotherapists who sent me for an MRI which showed I had a prolapsed disc and needed surgery. My consultant said to me that because I'd had it for so long, there may have been so much damage done to the nerve that surgery may not help it! Fortunately, the operation did help and cut down the pain a bit. Now 8yrs and 2 operations (on 2 different discs so far!) later I'm in constant agony with my back, every single day, and still peed off at the delay in my diagnosis!

Everyone over 21 has a "doctor story"~~curt, makes ya wait forever, condescends to women patients, doesn't believe patient [MD knows everytg] or misdiagnoses. Read "Vaginal Politics" or "Our Bodies, Ourselves" from 1970s...we've been fighting for patients' rights [& responsibilities] for 50+ yrs. If you lack trust in doc or the voice in your soul says, 'Get Out'~~escape now. Switching doctors is easy in U.S.~~just phone another one.

Something similar happened to me a few years ago. We have a coal fire and one evening I was poking it before putting more fuel on when there was a bang and I felt something hit my glasses then I smelt burning right beside me. I looked down and there was a small burning piece of coal smouldering on the fireside rug. I got it up and threw it onto the fire and then became aware if a strange mark on my glasses lense. I took my glasses off and saw a chip had been taken out of the lense and I knew that the piece of coal that had burnt the rug had hit my glasses first. I had to go in to town the next day to get the lens replaced as the damage was quite bad. When the optician heard what had happened her face went white. She told me how lucky I was and if I hadn't been wearing glasses, maybe even just contact lenses, the coal would have burnt into my eye and I would have lost that eye. I can't believe how lucky I was. The Lord was with me that day.

In Ireland and the UK, Father's day last year was on the 21st of June. My late and very much missed father's birthday would have been on Saturday the 20th of June. I had the flu once and was vomiting so much my side was killing me. We thought (at the time) it might be my appendix and I was rushed to the hospital where I had a CT scan. Doctor came in, said my appendix looked fine but told me there was a lump on my kidney. Short time passed, lump was removed, and it turned out to be cancer.
