Our planet is populated with both odd and amusing plants and animals. Some of them have been surrounded by myth and misunderstanding, and some we still know little about. David Attenborough’s series “Natural Curiosities” has revealed the remarkable evolutionary traits behind some of the most mystical wonders of the natural world.
Some of the quirky animals include flamingos, who survive in hot volcanic lakes by filtering out microscopic algae; salamanders that can regrow entire limbs; problem-solving crows that design intricate tools; and hippos, who secrete a vivid red mucus that acts as sunscreen.

I Heard Some Noise On The Roof This Morning
In an interview with Radio Times, David Attenborough recounted the particularly peculiar case of a greenfly that’s nearly all female. “Inside they are already pregnant. And inside the baby that’s inside the mother there’s another one. So you’ve got three generations all in one animal.” As bizarre as it sounds, that’s a very common insect we don’t really think of much.

Nature Is Scary As Hell
The Sandbox Tree also known as the "Dynamite Tree" grows exploding fruits. When fully mature, they explode with a loud bang and fling their hard, flattened seeds at speeds of up to 150 miles per hour and distances of over 60 feet. The shrapnel can seriously injure any person or animal in its path. As bad as this is, the exploding seed pods are only one of the ways that a sandbox tree can inflict harm.
The fruit of the sandbox tree is poisonous, causing vomiting, diarrhea and cramps if ingested. The tree sap is said to cause an angry red rash, and it can blind you if it gets in your eyes. It has been used to make poison darts.
Wow. The person who said nature is beautiful has CLEARLY never seen this tree!

Sphynx Cat With No Eyes
I leapt back from the screen in horror. Not much makes em do that. I’m sure it’s a lovely enough cat but it’s nightmare inducing.
Load More Replies...I've got a sphynx, lovely kitten. Yes this cat looks scary, but the poor thing! Deserves even more love xxx
Poor soul, It looks like inbreeding at its worst. This should not be allowed.
This is what people do with these fancy breeds..You dont see what always comes out, breeders dont want you to know.
Some cats can have a genetic condition where their eyelashes essentially grow on the inside and can cause a lot of pain and eventual blindness. Removing their eyes, while tough to look at, is actually pain free once healed after surgery. Can't remember if it's called entropion or something else. Can happen in certain dog breeds as well.
Lovely. F**k the breed up until they get a horrible painful affliction, then blind them and call that a good solution. People are f*****g monsters.
Load More Replies...Sphynx cats are often born with genetic defects, but this is horrible and tragic beyond words. This poor little angel is probably the result of irresponsible, ignorant breeding.
Actually, this kitty was born with both eyes and developed FHV. One of the symptoms of FHV is eye ulcers. The only option was to remove his eyes. First one in 2014 and then the other in 2018.
Load More Replies...Yeesh...Event Horizon, great film, very disturbing....
Load More Replies...Poor plucked chicken kitty! Betcha they’re a real loving and cuddly cat too.
Poor baby! To remove that much tissue, he must've had a terrible infection. I had a one-eyed Sphynx cat, and the side of her face with no eye was just smooth.
Seen this before. Poor baby. Would flinch if I saw this coming at me at night tho xD
Is it blind, or just has no eyes and they just cut the eyes out, that would be pretty vicious tho
Aaaawwww. Poor kitty. Definitely something ya don't or won't see every day.
This is a first I've ever seen! Perhaps it was born without eyes? Terrifying but amazing at the same time.
poor creature. I don't understand why people breed for defects that weaken the animal.
He wasn't born like this. This is not caused by breeding. The cat had FHV
Load More Replies...No, he wasn't. He had FHV which caused this.
Load More Replies...I wonder if you can buy prosthetic eyes for a cat?
Load More Replies...Aww, a poor little blind kitty! He would be fun to have tucked under your arm for Halloween.
Poor cat but it looks like something that would guard a gate in hell.
Really? I think those poor kitties are darn ugly even with eyes.
Load More Replies...Ban this inhuman breeding! Hitler used to experiment with humans with similar results!
This wasn't because of breeding. He had FHV.
Load More Replies...He wasn't born this way. He had FHV.
Load More Replies...Unusual outcome of enucleation- I've never seen it done with the socket like that
Maybe the poor animal is born like this. No sign of intervention. They should avoid these bad genetics experiments that result in unfairly suffering animals. Just because some decerebrate can say "How cute".
Load More Replies...Fake Fake Fake Fake, sorry, gotta say its fake. If it had no eyes, they would not look like that. And I know that bc my friends dog lost an eye.
*Any* cat with empty eyesockets like that is going to look freaky as hell. WHY didn't the vet sew the cat's lids shut?
To me it looks like the poor inbreeded animal is born without eyes. You don't see any trace of an intervention.
Load More Replies...christ this is disturbing. what series of events led to this?
Poor creature! This breed is animal cruelty, anyway. But this makes me really sad.
aAll cats are wrinkled under their skin. Some just as not as much as the sphinx breed, but nevertheless they're wrinkly. How do you think Mama cats pick up their kittens by the neck? :)

I wish more of these had explanations. Some of them were completely confusing.
Nature is beautiful most of the time, ugly some of the time, and definitely deadly a lot of the time.
I'm living in Germany, and very often I feel like it's quite boring here. But sometimes I'm just grateful for all we have and for all we have not, as well.
I made this mistake of looking at this at 2:30 in the morning. I still can't sleep.
That was super interesting but also scary as fck. Anyway thanks for the warning in the caption. That saved me, as I scrolled down in slow motion and held my breath for every new pic.
Surprised at finding so many interesting things. This has given me some energy to learn more about these awesome creatures and plants. Thank you BP.
Nightmare inducing but really interesting. Thanks to those that provided explanations
But 'mother nature' or 'gaia' 'loves us'! Or, this planet is clearly 'designed for us'! - This didn't even get into what some tropical parasites will do to humans. You know what else 'mother nature' or 'gaia' or some supposed deity 'designed' for us? The Coronavirus, AIDS, anthrax, Ebola, e.coli - many other horrible things.
I love and hate these. I have a serious fear of spiders so I know there are usually some terrifying spider ones. But the rest are so fascinating!
I made it through all of them. I’m proud of myself! But I will NOT be sleeping, eating, brushing my tears or hair, or any activity where I might encounter this for a while..
Nature is wonderful, in many ways, we have so much beauty, be thankful for , and beware of a great many also !!!
maybe its just cause i want to be a marine biologist, but most of these were not "Scary As Hell," just 2% scary & 98% COOL! baby spiders are freaky though when theres that many
This story almost made me vomit for real. How do I get it off my page?
I think very few of these qualify as "scary". Cool and fascinating, mostly. (But spiders... spiders always scary. Except when cute. Like Lucas.)
Remove this from your site! Don't you ever show, nowhere, that disgusting picture of that dog's mouth! As well as some other terrible things 🤮
