Every day, companies bombard us with information. From new product launches and appealing adverts to very big statements and generous promises backed up by questionable research at best, they still manage to earn our trust up to a point we don’t question them.

But this illuminating thread from Ask Reddit challenges the things we take for granted and debunks the myths created by big corporations. "What do most people believe that is actually a myth created by corporate companies?" someone asked and the eye-opening responses started pouring in.

From big pharma to the sugar industry, it’s hard to wrap your head around the fact that we may be believing in stuff that benefits no one except the ones who are earning big money.

40 Facts And Theories Spread By Corporations That Have Been Proven To Be Fake Yet People Still Believe To Be True The McDonald's Hot Coffee woman wasn't some kind of trashy scammer, she was an elderly woman who had incredibly bad burns and could have possibly died as a result of health complications. McDonald's launched a covert campaign to make it seem like she was just trying to make some quick cash as part of a trend of frivolous lawsuits. Edit: For anyone who says "It was just a little burn that she is responsible for" The coffee gave her 3rd degree burns and literally melted her flesh, fusing part of her genitals to her leg which required massive reconstructive surgery and hospitalization.

And she didn't even demand a big payout - just enough to cover her medical bills, which McDonald's refused to pay. She wasn't the only one to have been burned, either. At the time they were notorious for keeping their coffee at dangerously high temperatures.

There were over 700 complains of burns from hot coffee before that lady complained. 700!

The case was basically that McDonalds served coffee at a temperature they KNEW could cause 3rd Degree burns, and therefore were negligent. Which is true.

On YouTube there is a channel called legal eagle. He has a post about frivolous lawsuits that weren’t actually frivolous. This lady’s case is part of it. Super interesting channel. I don’t know how to post the url but if you search for “legal eagle frivolous” it comes up in the top few results.

I remember, around that same time, getting a cup of tea from a snack bar (not a fast food place). The cup was filled too high to add milk or even put an ice cube in, and the water was scalding hot and burned my tongue—-and my hand when it spilled over as I spit it out and quickly put the cup down after it burned my tongue. Can you imagine what it would’ve done to my esophagus! They weren’t the only place that used to set their hot water dispensers to a ridiculously high temperature back then. I’m glad the McDonald’s hot coffee lady filed her suit, because the water used for coffee, tea, and other hot beverages started being kept at a less lethal temperature after she won.

Her burns were horrific. The poor woman wasted away to 84 pounds, she went through hell. All she wanted was 20g to take care of the hospital bill and McD's refused. Also, she didn't get millions. On appeal, the amount was brought down much lower. They didn't disclose the amount, but I've seen reports it was as low as a couple hundred thousand after it was all said and done.

I don't know whether it's true, but what I remember from it is also that they were serving coffee that was WAY hotter than is common/expected and also hotter than was legally allowed. And there had been accidents like this before her, and those victims begged them to put up a sign explaining that it's much much hotter than normal coffee, but they refused.

40 Facts And Theories Spread By Corporations That Have Been Proven To Be Fake Yet People Still Believe To Be True That the public is responsible for all the plastic pollution. Anybody remember that ad campaign with the crying Indian guy? Before then soda companies were selling their soda in nice easily wash-n-reuse glass bottles. When they made the switch to plastic because it was cheaper, and the garbage started to collect, they decided to shift the blame onto YOU the consumer.

I remember when all soda bottles were glass. You took the carton of empties back to the grocery store where there was an attendant at the rack where the empties were put, who would log the number of bottles you returned and give you a receipt for the deposit. When you were checking out, you gave the cashier that receipt, and they credited it to your total, whether you bought more soda or not (the next time you bought soda, you just paid the deposit—-which wasn’t an extra charge, as it was already baked into the price—-and started the process over). I never saw any problem with bringing my empties back to the store, and thought the refund/credit was a great system. I wish they’d bring it back, and all states would once again give a refund for returning empty soda bottles.

No individual responsibility for plastic/recycling/etc. If coca cola sell you a soda in a plastic bottle, they should remain responsible for that plastic bottle. It ends up in landfill, they should get fined. Without use of plastic/recycling impacting corporate profits, there is no incentive for the producers of all this waste to try and reduce it.

When I was a kid, the "milko" truck would drive down the street every evening, and a group of teenagers would jump off and run to people's doorsteps to drop off milk in glass bottles and collected the used ones left out for them. I remember saying I wanted to join them when I got older, but of course by then the days of getting your milk in reusable glass bottles were long gone.

No. I recycle it. Then it goes to the dump, is sold to some third world country, instead of actually being recycled, because money. And that country has no rules, or doesn't care about them, and dumps the waste on an empty lot somewhere out of sight, where the waste blows or washes into rivers, oceans, etc. Not my fault. Again, companies who think money is more important than life.

There have been an abundance of corporate-related scandals where big companies made big promises, only for them to turn out as a bunch of lies. Today, however, customers are no longer fooled that easily and they’re more informed and opinionated than ever before.

When corporations are called out and their claims are revealed to be smoke and mirrors, it gives them two options: to either arm themselves with more lies and further live in oblivion, or to take it as a chance to learn from mistakes.

I don't support keeping wages secret to protect the employer, but I do believe it's better to put your role into a level/range to avoid resentment toward any single employee for their earnings. You might not know what that person's role entails, how hard they work, or what they do to earn that. I make a bit more than some of the other people I work with in the same department because I often do more-a lot more- and my boss has rightly rewarded me for that. If they knew I made more, even if they agreed with it because they saw how much I did, suddenly everything would be 'give it to her, that's why she's makes more' and there could be a resentment that would form that is no fault of my own or my boss's. I don't want to be penalized by my co-workers because they are doing the bare minimum in order to keep from being fired. If that's what you want to do, then great but you'll make the standard pay as everyone else does. I think posting a pay range for a job description is enough.

If it's a wage job, you still have the same jobs, no matter your creativity. It's always a good idea to talk about your wage, so everyone can learn what is normal and whether you are paid enough and what to ask for in negotiations.

I agree! I used to work with a woman from Vietnam. We got Christmas bonuses and she cavalierly told me the amount of hers. Then she asked me how much I got. I was appalled, but have since reconsidered. Companies want salaries to be confidential so that they can avoid parity and the questions (and possibly legal actions) of employees who don't have it.

Over processing and applying heat to hair causes split ends. Having very dry hair causes split ends. Not getting your hair trimmed keeps damaged split ends, and allows them to continue to split even more. I stopped blow drying my hair over a year ago, because I decided to quit trying to straighten it and just embrace my waves and curls. I used to start getting split ends within three months of a trim. It’s been one year and four months since I stopped straightening my hair, and I have ZERO split ends. I can’t believe I let myself do so much damage to my hair for all those years, for nothing more than a pipe dream of having long straight hair. I now absolutely LOVE my healthy wavy curly hair!

As a cosmetologist since 2005, technologies such as "zip up" by redken, claim to help but this is correct. Only a hair cut can remove them. To anyone who believes that a cut will help hair grow faster is sadly mistaken as well. Our hair grows an average of 1/4in or .6cm per month. Some people may experience that at a faster or slower rate buy that the average. Constantly touching your hair in the front like most people do will cause split ends as well, so that's something to consider. Other BP stylists may jump in here, but remember like any corporation, pro hair companies make excessive amounts of thier own branded KoolAid to drink but my figures come from school, not corporate promises.

My 'repairing' products don't actually get rid of the split ends and I'm aware of that; what they actually do is keep my hair hydrated and soft, as opposed to dry and brittle, which is how the split ends mostly happen in the first place.

My hair is cooked and if I don't use particular products, I look like I put my finger in a socket. No, these products don't heal the hair, but they do coat it and make it slippery, reducing the amount of new breakage. It's similar to putting hand cream on your hands. It softens the dead skin.

I was never one of those girls who drooled over Brides magazine and had her wedding planned since she was 12. I always liked the idea of eloping, because weddings were too fussy and stressful, and I liked the privacy aspect of elopement. I never had anything more than a wedding ring. We also got married at the courthouse and spent our honeymoon at a friend’s beach house—-where we just stayed for the weekend then went home. We had (still have, always have had, and always will have) pets and wanted to spend time with them. When we got home, we just took the phone off the hook and locked the door, to shut the rest of the world out while we spent time with each other, and our pets. It was a great and very relaxing honeymoon—-almost 22 years ago! Still don’t have an engagement ring, and don’t care if I never have one. The MARRIAGE is the important part, not the ring or the wedding.

Same. My ring was an heirloom and I had zero idea it existed, so I was taken completely by surprise when my husband pulled it out. I wasn't suspecting a thing, since he knew I'd go nuts if he put himself into debt by buying a typical engagement ring.

Greenwashing is one such example. To find out more about it and other deceptive practices corporations use, Bored Panda reached out to Dr. Audrey Tang, a chartered psychologist and author of multiple books, including "Be A Great Manager Now", "The Leader's Guide to Mindfulness," and "The Leader's Guide to Resilience.”

“It happens often that companies, rather than make sincere efforts to promote a healthier environment, spend more on 'appearing green' – Nestle, Charmin and car companies such as Mercedes-Benz were called out in Truth in Advertising for exaggerated environmentally friendly claims,” Tang explained.

Work the hours you're paid to work. You come in on time and leave on time. You don't take work home, unless that is actually part of your paid work. You don't allow work to interfere with your personal time once you've left it, so no answering phone calls or dealing with emails unless you are on call and getting paid for being available and contactable outside your normal working hours. You take the annual leave you're entitled to take, you take the maternity and sick leave you're entitled to take (if that is provided by your company and government, which it is in virtually every first world country except USA). Having a clear distinction between work life and home life is far better for your health. This is how most of Europe operates and it works just fine-I give 100% to my employer when I'm in work and getting paid to do that. When I leave, that's it until the next day.

Wait, what? But Big Brother said that I’m happy being stuck with miserable people for poverty wages until I’m used up and can’t function anymore. I’m so confused. In all seriousness though, I offer myself as an example. I bought into the must-work constantly attitude and that bosses would take care of me because I was a hard workers. I destroyed my neck, my back hurts, there is c**p in my lungs and I’ve been left hanging more times than I can count. Look out for yourselves, no one is looking out for you. I dislike being that negative but unfortunately that’s how life goes.

OK but....if you devote 50 hours / week for work (8 hours of work + 2 hours for prep and commute, etc) and 56 hours for sleep (8 hours X 7 days) that leaves 62 hours of free time which is the majority of your life. It's not just how much time you have but what you do with it.

Yup, according to this logic 37% is free time, 33% is sleeping time and only 30% is work related time (if you use your 2 hour commute). OP is biased too because you don't devote 5 days to work, their assuption is 80% vs an actual 30%.

My late sister was an RN. 16 hour days, 6 days a week. Worked at the same hospital for 40 years. She had heart problems she put off having repaired for over decade. When it became critical, she had surgery but didn't make it. Her body was too weak by then. When I called her boss to inform her that my sister passed away, there was no condolences. Instead it was "I don't know who I going to get to do all of her overtime now". The hospital never sent a card or flowers. My sister was dedicated to the job & her patients. The job was no dedicated to her.

I've tried some sort of vitamin drink in Germany 3 times in my life. Gave me stomach pains and the runs for ca 24 hours each time. And in the recent years they have begun selling that sh!t in my country as well. I don't get it. At all. Eat normal, varied food and you'll be fine. Perhaps add a vitamin pill if you really need to. That's all. You don't need vitamin drinks. Just like protein bars and -shakes. Just eat your vitamins and minerals from their natural sources. I am pretty sure it's cheaper and healthier -especially in the long run. But that's just my thoughts about this. Thanks for reading :)

"...most of that sugar" Yep but sugar in the form of high fructose corn syrup which is MUCH worst for your body than cane sugar, as your body cannot use it for energy and just stores it as fat. It promotes type 2 diabetes. If you must have soda, look for the few that actually use CANE SUGAR.

HR is there to protect the company and put out many potential legal fires happening now or preventing them in the future. HR makes sure managers are appropriately following guidelines regarding progressive discipline actions leading up to lawful termination, prevention of unemployment benefits being paid out with provided proof, ensure all employees are adhering to basically whatever they signed and said they'd do upon being offered employment. Always keep a copy of your original employment agreement because anything they come at you for, you probably agreed to the contrary on that paperwork. In fact, that signed paperwork is sent to unemployment with your documented infractions to prevent your payouts. HR is only your friend when you're doing what you agreed to do. Depending on the company, they also handle your insurance benefits and maybe even your payroll as well. I know this because I did Corporate HR for a big box retailer found in every US state and divisions worldwide.

HR departments (of large companies) do whatever is necessary to ensure their own continued existence. If pretending to give a flying duck about employees suits that end, then they'll do so. And while we're on the subject, what kind of a way to refer to people is "Human Resources"? It puts feeling flesh and blood alongside buildings and machines.

The HR department is there to help the corporation, but if one employer happens to be the manager over lots of other employers, that often means siding with the many over the one. Bad managerial behavior is bad for the company. Happy, productive, engaged employees is good for the company. Too few companies, particularly small businesses, seem to realize this, however.

Gotta chime in on this one. HR is NOT there for you. Do not ever trust anyone in HR. Document everything on your own. Record meetings, save copies of emails, keep a running log of everything if you have any reason to suspect you're being railroaded. You are the only one looking out for you.

However, Tang argues that since the ensuing regulation was passed to ensure tougher scrutiny of green advertising and compliance to green practice, many companies are making a genuine shift to sustainability.

Other companies take it as a chance to learn from their mistakes and genuinely make a public stand. “Mercedes-Benz is this year fielding a black car in Formula1 with the hashtag #weraceasone, to fight racism,” Tang said.

“But therein lies the difference – a public stand can help a brand; weighing in where there is no personal nor genuine connection can be seen as profiteering,” she explained.

It is all a matter energy in and energy out, and both sugars and fat are quite callory dense. Fat is the most effective way to store energy in the body, as we can build up almost endless deposits of it, whereas there is a limit to how much sugar can be stored in the muscles and blood, and fat is always the second option, when it comes to energy generation. Hence your body will only start on it when the sugar depots has been depleted. So if you eat too much sugar, your body will generally run on sugar alone, and store all the fat for "bad times", which may never come. However if only you cut out all the sugars, it does not mean that you can eat all the fat you want without gaining weight. Neither fat nor sugar is bad for you... at the right quantities, as long as your intake matches your energy need. E.g. if you are an atlet running around all day, you can probably eat fat/sugar at a level that would make most people obese and still look awsome.

As someone experiencing gestational diabetes, I can confirm that 90-95% of what's available while traveling is c**p food that is primarily sugar or white flour, both of which are nightmares for your blood sugar levels. So to eat healthy foods with no added sugar takes real, concerted effort. And sugar is definitely the real evil.

"Fat-free" foods usually have tons of sugar in them, and are less healthy for you than non "fat-free" items. Don't buy "fat-free" unless it's composed of ingredients that are actually good for your specific health condition. For most people, however, it's garbage.

Sugar. Sugar is the enemy. I’ve used myself as an experiment lol. But forreal, everything has sugar added to it, savory salty. One class of juice, has all the sugar you need in a day. Now add your “fruit smoothie” and your crossaint, that bbq chicken, and an apple…. And bam. Excess sugar=excess fat.

The alpha male and female positions in the pack are occupied by whichever pair is mating. They’re not permanent positions on some hierarchy. Every pack member who is still able to mate can have their turn. I wish the concept of alphas and betas would just go away, as it has been embraced by the wrong types of people, and used as an excuse to bully.

This is actually not correct. The alpha male and female are the parents of the pack, and it is a permanent position. Any wolf that wishes to mate must leave the pack and start their own. It has to do with pheromones, but only the alphas can mate. They don't take turns. Source: Howling Woods Farm, a wolf sanctuary

It's not just the coffin, though; it's being pumped full of formaldehyde to preserve you (for what? you're going to be buried!!) and having a concrete burial vault placed over your coffin so the grave doesn't collapse once that fancy coffin disintegrates... Bury me in a shroud or a cardboard box. And hold the soil- and water-poisoning formaldehyde.

Uff! Well, in american movies they always show an open casket and expensive looking bedding. Must bei an american thing. Here in Germany there are many laws regarding burial: If a casket ist put into the earth, it must hold for at least 12 years (so the body can rot before being crushed) that makes it already an expensive furniture in my eyes: you don't get many unser 500€. For burning, they may bei cheaper but the ash still has to bei buried in an urn -> overall the same starting price. I hope the american trend of open caskets will never come to Germany - burials are already expensive without it, you can't get the whole ceremony (law says: cementry or sinking in water hast to bei done) under 1500€!

Your claim that "expiration dates are completely up to the discretion of the manufacturer" is false. Yes, the FDA does not require expiration dates (except for infant formula), but each state has its own regulations on labeling of expiration dates.

But it depends on the packaging. Sometimes, the use by date can be refering to the packaging, meaning that after a certain time, the packaging can start to break down and give the toxins and chemicals to the food. Impossible for glass containers though. I wouldn't eat 2 years-expired honey from a plastic container, but I would eat 5-years-expired honey from a glass container.

No, if a food is past its sell-by ate, it's because the manufacturer doesn't want to assure you that it'll taste as good as fresher food. If it's past the sell-by date, that doesn't mean it's harmful to you, but it does mean the stores can't sell it because the manufacturer doesn't want to hurt its reputation.

It's more of a "this won't taste as good after X date" label on most products. Though anything that doesn't have preservatives really does have an expiration date and sometimes the product goes bad before it.

The FDA may not require an expiration date, but several other countries do and in order to be able to export stuff often manufacturers place an expiration date anyway. An expiration date also works as a guarantee for the manufacturer that the product is served or sold in a condition that presents the product in its prime state, avoiding that a consumer experience a stale product and get a negative image of the brand or product. The problem here is with the people who think the expiration date is a magical good/bad threshold, and can't spot the thin difference between "BEST BEFORE..." and "ABSOLUTELY DO NOT CONSUME AFTER..."

Actually, the plastic is expriing more rapidly than the product in many cases. Fun fat. You're welcome. Plastic may "never break down" but its chemicals can leach into the product. Some studies have linked that to metabolic issues. Peanut butter in a glass jar with a vacuum seal will last about ten uears, as my family proved.

I find the smell they insist scenting them with far more offensive than any menstrual one. And calling it feminine hygiene has horrible connotations. Feminine has such a strong association with delicate, helpless female stereotypes and hygiene suggests a lack of cleanliness. And of course some trans men have periods too. If we can buy ovulation products, I don't understand why we can't just buy menstruation products.

Stop using soap altogether dude. Water. Just water & a sponge of some sort. I used to get yeast infections & s**t all the time. The second I stopped using scented body washes & all that perfumed s**t & feminine products... ALL OF THAT STOPPED! I never "smell" ... even after working out. I don't get yeast infections. I don't have any issues anymore. You're not the problem. You don't smell bad. The products are making the issue. There is nothing wrong with you! You have a natural scent & that's supposed to be there. But if it's overbearing or abnormal it's most likely because of the products you're using that are throwing off your pH & it's causing bacteria to grow. No joke. Stop using scented body products.

Ink jet printers follow the Gillette/Kodak model. With Gillette it was, give the razor away, make money on the blades. With Kodak it was, sell the cameras at cost and make money on film and processing. So printers are really about selling ink.

Most ink cartriges will indicate they're empty when they're actually still about half full. The chip embedded in them will make refilling them impossible. Most printer makers/sellers operate on the Gillette business model. Sell the printer relatiely cheap but charge out the wazoo for the ink.

that “organic” label doesn’t mean it’s actually “healthy”

I read a French study a couple of years ago. Among the two groups , the one eating organic end up in better shape. Yet, what the study shows in fact is that the groupe eating organic for the test seems to have been more carefull with their health. Apparently, the fact they eat something they thought " healthy" got them to make effort for their health. More people of this group stopped smoking and start exercising. The conclusion of this study was that eating organic got a good influence on health but because it can raise awarness of people about the choices they make. Again, it's only one study, so, not an absolut thruth, but the conclusion is interesting.

Well yes and no. Because you can buy organic/bio potato chips (fried), candy (sugar) and a whole lot of unhealthy food. So yes, it isn't always healthy in that way. But the Organic/bio label means that the product was grown/made by certain rules, like no pesticides, chemicals, artificial flavors, etc. so it IS better for you AND also the planet/animals/nature.

Non-organic is very often contaminated with pesticide resides, which are very definitely NOT healthy, and actively harmful. Also, lab testing had shown that non-organic foods do not have the same nutrients that organically-grown ones do, but much less than organic ones and also much less than the same ones grown decades ago whether organic or not. Modern mass-produced growing methods have exhausted soil nutrients, so plants cannot take up what isn't there. Organic standards for growing include measures to build the soil.

Even the label "organic" can vary from area to area. In some cases there are rules about distance from your organic farm to an area that isn't organic. In others there aren't any regulations. Drifting insecticides, leaching, there are plenty of ways for chemicals to move from one area to another. Just a quick trip into an area affected by acid rain will show that chemicals end up in many places they aren't wanted. Consider honey. I saw someone selling their honey as organic. Sure they weren't using chemicals in their hives but, their bees are traveling outside of their yard, visiting treated areas and inevitably bringing home chemicals from the plants they visit.

Newsflash, Uranium ore is technically organic. Technetium is not (even though it exists briefly, it has no stable long-lived isotopes). Therefore everything that is made or grown is made from molecules and in turn, atoms. Discussion ended. "Organic" means some ethical standard was hopefully adhered to...

This is because teeth appeared whiter on Black and White film, and stars began to dye/bleach them whiter to match how they appeared on film. In 1918, it was discovered that a heated lamp in conjunction with hydrogen peroxide would lighten teeth. While it’s always appealing to cancel brands, corporations and people who made mistakes, it’s important to realize that cancel culture, just like judgement, is often rooted in anger. “One side shouting and another covering their ears and shouting back – like Brexit and instead of listening and processing, the opposing side simply nods and raises their voice,” Tang explained.

“Sometimes these two groups are fighting the same side, and through recognizing their allegiance may be made all the stronger. Don’t cut the nose to spite the face,” she added.

The only thing that's a "rip off" on V day is flowers, and the only reason they cost so much is to limit demand. Any time you don't have enough supply to meet all the demand, you have to increase prices. That's just how economics works.

Here this is only true if you reject the inheritance all together, so you also won't get the your mom's old wedding ring or the pictures your dad took. It's all or nothing. And when you get all, you also have to pay the debts that remain after paying for it from the estate.

I'll take it a step further: in California, if you open a probate, the creditor gets notice by publication or by a notice served on it by the personal representative. That creditor then has to properly present a creditor claim within the allotted time for the administrator to consider. If rejected, the creditor has to file suit or it gets barred. This doesn't apply to secured debt. A decedent's family/heirs are not responsible for a decedent's debt

this depends on which state in the US you live in, if you're in the US, and varies wildly by country, so do not take it as a given. ANY debt on anything that has anyone else's name on it ---- house, car, credit card ---- is usually going to be paid by the survivor, or it's repo'd/taken to court, etc. Check the laws before making a choice.

Incorrect. It may depend on the state where you live, but I know for a fact that in California, if the deceased has assets, all bills must be paid. I was the executor of my parents' trust. I didn't have to take on that job until both our parents had passed away. There were debts to be paid, and I got legal advice to help me handle it all. The lawyer made it clear that I was obliged to pay off those debts before I split up any trust money left over between me and my four siblings.

What's the myth here? There are certainly some food types that you should eat more of and some less, which is basically what the food pyramid says. A particular version of a food pyramid might be inaccurate but I don't think the concept is a myth.

The food pyramid was conceived with heavy input from certain industries, with the dairy being one of main influencers. The good pyramid was nothing more than a big ad that was released by a corrupted government agency and designed to favor one industry rather than being an actual guide to good eating.

Why do they use the food circle but the text say food pyramid? Its two different things and the pyramid is not working and was created (if i understand correctly by food industry not accouly studies) and does not work, they did many studies of the circle is recommended in Sweden today (but not the pyramid). Was also a food documentary from svt that showed that it was the best and people who tried it got the best results in "overall health". So I'll take this as a pinch of salt.

FALSE!!!! Like other businesses, colleges want to succeed and grow and become more powerful, which takes fundraising... and too many administrators can get too wrapped up in impressing the money people. But most colleges are legally no-profit organizations, which cannot return dividends, profits, nor proceeds to the sale of assets to any investors.

Though it isn't mandatory to replace wheat products in your diet. Most of the things they're replacing aren't particularly healthy foods anyway. Pasta and various baked goods are pretty empty calories to begin with. Though pasta is one of the places where you might end up with better nutrition in some gluten free varieties, like chickpea and lentil based pastas.

40 Facts And Theories Spread By Corporations That Have Been Proven To Be Fake Yet People Still Believe To Be True Here in Sweden there is an extremely persistent myth that you *should* eat 6-8 slices of bread every day. That was a commercial campaign by a bread manufacturer. Some way they managed to get the Public Health Institute to pass that myth on. It was like 50 years ago, and that myth still lives! I'm so sick and tired of that myth. I also think the "6-8 slices of bread a day" campaign has been one of the most successful examples in world history of myths created by corporate companies.

I remember older folks pushing a lot of bread on kids during meals. Especially if they, themselves, grew up in poverty. Bread is bulky, and therefore very filling if the family can’t put a lot of other filling foods on the table. Even though it’s not a good substitute for food that’s both filling and nourishing, it at least keep little kids from having painfully empty stomachs. My parents were teenagers during the Great Depression, and I remember them trying to get us kids to eat a lot of bread—-even though my father was a pharmacist and made really good money. Good enough for my mother to be a SAHM and to raise five kids (four of them boys who ate A LOT when they were teenagers) on one salary. Guess old habits die hard.

You really don't need toothpaste at all. Mostly just an abrasive. Especially the ones that claim whitens and brightens. The outside enamel on your teeth is the whitest part so over years of abrasives it gets worn down to show through the darker inside. That's why older teeth look darker.

So one student from the student house where I lived said he thought that his friend earned so much with a similar diploma, so I asked that. Turned out the others got 500 extra.

This specifically applies to sharing your salary with coworkers, not society in general. When sharing one’s salary with the general population, you’re open to criticism from anyone, including those who’ve no idea how your job functions. You could easily be accused as being grossly overpaid & highly privileged or even out of touch with the struggles of living paycheck to paycheck. Something less likely to happen from your work peers making roughly the same. For example, let’s hypothetically say I’m a private consultant who bills a minimum of $450USD an hour. Sharing such with a society where the majority make 1/20th of that looks outrageous. Sharing that with other consultants & lawyers in the same field makes it look like charity work. It’s important that all people are paid their worth for their labor and we have a long way to go to achieve such. A start is equity in the workplace by sharing salaries openly & collective bargaining. In general tho, it isn’t helpful.

Eating carrots does not improve one's vision. The British government put this out as an explanation as to why their (supposedly carrot-eating) RAF pilots were able to shoot down enemy Luftwaffe fighters before being detected by the enemy. The truth has nothing to do with carrots. The British had invented a primitive form of radar and didn't want the Nazis knowing about it.

Carrots contain beta-carotene. The body uses this to create Vitamin A. This is essential for eye health. Whilst it won't cure sight problems, it can help prevent others.

40 Facts And Theories Spread By Corporations That Have Been Proven To Be Fake Yet People Still Believe To Be True That eating fat (as in the macronutrient in general) makes you fat. This is why we have so many low-fat or reduced-fat versions of foods where the fat is just replaced with cheap sugar, and sugar actually makes you fat. It all boils down to the marketing. The issue lies within foods being sold as low-fat substitutes of the original and being marketed as healthier options, when really, the fat is substituted for sugar, which can be even worse for you. To all the people saying what do you mean? fat is 9 calories per gram and sugar is 4. Correct. But do you think it's better to eat 9 cals of fat, or sub it with 9 cals of sugar. Eating fat is actual required for your body to burn fat, and is vital for all types of bodily functions. Sugar, on the other hand, skyrockets your blood glucose, resulting in the secretion of insulin, and when insulin is high, it's much harder to burn fat. If you cut all the fat from your diet, you can have hormonal issues, potential joint pain, s**t digestion, no libido. Cut all the sugar (not carbs in general, just processed sugar) and you'll probably lose some weight and feel awesome! We can go on for days here. The point is, if you're going to opt for a low-fat version of a food, take a peek at the ingredients and see what you're consuming instead!

This is partly true, but if you eat to much fat, it will be stored in the body and cause you to gain weight. Allso it fails to make a distinction between several types of fat. Many are more or less allright, but the famously bad one (LDL-cholesterol) helps to clog up your arteries faster. You still should not avoid all LDL, as your body needs a bit of it, but high LDL-levels will increase your chance of arterial disease.

Read the book "the case against sugar" and your above opinion may be changed. The book lays out the case that even high LDL are because of sugar, not fat. And it is correct. And also it lays out the case that the sugar lobby has spent BILLIONS convincing you to blame fat instead of sugar- and look, it's working!!

Selective breeding and Genetic Modification are NOT the same! Cross pollinating two apples, or even two more distantly (genetically related) fruits, is not the same as introducing fish genes into a tomato. GM may not yet be proven to be bad, but it is certainly manipulating genes in a way that has NEVER been done in traditional farming. In any event, it certainly hasn't yet been proven safe, and those happy to partake are actually being used as guinea pigs.

‘Drink 3 litres of water per day’ is a complete myth with no scientific backing, created by water bottle companies. Yes, it’s important to drink water, but once you get past a certain point all you’re doing is spending money for something that goes in, does nothing, and then gets excreted.

You need a total of about 2.7 to 3.7 litres of fluids a day, but you don't necessarily need to drink that amount of water to achieve that. You get it from food, other beverages or water in combination (food makes up about 20%).

Having 5 deteriorated disks in my spine, I recently learned that they require drinking more water to hydrate the disks, which slows down their degeneration. Entrepreneurialism is a myth created by MLMs and pyramid schemes. Know your worth, don’t fall for the employer tricks to underpay you, but definitely don’t be deceived by the network marketing companies either. No matter what spiel they give you, if you can’t afford their products and programs comfortably on your current salary, you will lose money - or even go broke. And their health and wellness certifications are c**p. - you can literally kill someone if you don’t have extensive knowledge of medicine if you sell them vitamins or supplements. Vitamins and supplements are 1) unregulated, and 2) based on a theory that was never properly peer reviewed; and evidence is showing that if you don’t medically need them, they can be harmful or even deadly.

40 Facts And Theories Spread By Corporations That Have Been Proven To Be Fake Yet People Still Believe To Be True There’s this weird idea among some women that pads are inferior to tampons, or that only young girls or virgins use pads. This was actually perpetuated by tampon companies in the 60s or 70s I believe, when the link between Toxic Shock Syndrome and tampons was made. Pad companies latched onto this and started marketing their product as cleaner, so tampon companies countered by marketing their product as for mature, professional women. This was particularly effective at the height of Second Wave feminism when women were struggling to be taken more seriously in the workplace. So effective that this perception still exists today even though there’s no logical basis and no one even really knows WHY they think this way. You can sort of still see it in commercials today, where pad commercials are usually just someone pouring blue liquid on a pad while in tampon commercials there’s usually a woman dancing around or playing a sport or something equally not fun to do while you’re on your period.

.... now that I think about it, I've never seen a TV- or youtube ad for a menstrual cup. I've only ever heard about one through word of mouth, even though in a lot of cases, most people I know (myself included) have objectively better experiences with it, and are not likely to go back to disposable products. That's more than likely the reason companies aren't very eager to promote it, lol

Pads were messy, and would smell if you did have an opportunity to change them frequently. At least with tampons, if you were having an unusually heavy flow, you could couple them with a pad, to reduce the risk of overflowing and ending up with a very embarrassing stain on your clothing. Believe me, the only good thing about menopause is that you no longer have to worry about all the b******t rigmarole that goes with having your period.

My very heavy period gave me a toxic shock from a tampon after only one hour from insertion and I've been scared to use them ever since. I can only start using them on day 4 and by day 6 or 8 the blood is old clotted one, not the best for tampons. By day 10 I only need a pantyliner anyway. I don't like tampons because they are painful for me too. I wish I could use them though, my friends are really happy with them and never use pads.

I think pads are great for people who don't have heavy periods or who are not overweight, and the menstrual cup is almost impossible to use if you're overweight. Pads give me horrible rashes because i'm sitting around wet all day. I have very heavy periods. I used pads all through middle and most of high school and it was a nightmare and embarrassing because i would literally be bleeding down my legs. I could smell myself all the time. My bed looked like someone was murdered. I have no underwear or sheets that weren't stained. I got literally depressed because I was so tired of dealing with how horrible it was. I'd change my giant super pad and less than a half hour later I'd get up from my seat and it would be covered in blood and I'd have to walk with a shirt tied around my waist. I trailed blood down a hallway at school once, ugh. When I finally tried a tampon, I literally cried. No more blood everywhere. Leaks were way less. I felt like I could live my life again.

Well, it IS harder to dance with a diaper full of blood in my pants :) I actually experienced the opposite while in the US - in Europe, we use tampons without applicators and I was dirty for doing that. My host family only allowed me to use pads.

"something equally not fun to do while you’re on your period": when you have cramps etc: No, certainly not. But If you don't have these problems, you can actually forget about the period - and you CAN have fun moving. If you don't, you should perhaps try alternative products instead of starting that women can't have that. Many can!

My favourite birthday card was from my 25th birthday - a goofy friend took a ripped piece of construction paper and drew crappy flowers on it with a marker, then used his bong flavour drops on the flowers so they would smell good :p it was so bad that it was beautiful, I loved it! Got lots of store bought cards that year too but I don’t remember any of them :)

Change your oil every 3,000 miles or 3 months. Was created by car repair shops to gain more business. Motor oil companies say you can go 5000-7500 miles or 6 months. Owners manuals even say it. As a mechanic here is my 2 cents. Change that oil and filter twice a year, first week of spring and first week of fall. Do a motor flush once every 2 years. Splurge on tires when it’s time to replace and try to get ethanol free gas if you can, if you can’t, use a fuel additive once a month. Don’t forget about your spark plugs, they are the most underrated component on your engine.

The problem is a minuscule amount of fuel makes its way past your piston rings into the oil and creates an acid that erodes the main brearings. This is why time and mileage both matter. They used to say 3 months or 3000 miles but the design of the engines, fuels, and oils has evolved.

Don't know about American cars, since US manufacturers have some weird practices, but: 1) Most manufacturers call for an oil change every 15.000 km for gas cars and 25.000 for diesel. If you don't drive that distance in a year or so, check the levels and top up accordingly. 2) Changing the oil twice an year is overkill and a waste of money. Modern engines run very clean and with efficient cooling. Synth oils are more resistant to temperatures and do not degrade as fast as they did decades ago. 3) the "ethanol free gas" fad is stupid. Engines are made to run on a specific mixture of fuel, that is the one with up to 15% ethanol. Ethanol helps lowering environmental impact (it's renewable through waste biomass) and reduces the soot created by combustion, helping keeping the engine valves cleaner. Ethanol-free gas is usually reserved for racing, since it gives more power to engines specifically designed to bring in more air and handle that power.

In your average commercial car, that tiny extra punch and 3% more mileage translate directly to far more expensive gas, worse wear on the engine, need for fuel additive to reduce soot buildup, worse emissions. All in the name of "going against the Man" since ethanol mix is mandated by the government to reduce environmental impact. If ethanol mix fuel is good for freakin' F1 cars, it's good enough for your second-hand Honda Accord.

Modern conventional oils are far better than those that existed back when the 3,000 mile recommendation was made, and any good synthetic will not break down before 15,000 miles. Even twice a year is more than you need.

This is an old practice because many cars used regular oil. Most modern vehicles use synthetic which lasts a lot longer and you don't need to change. However, it really just depends on how hard you run your car. It's not so much the oil as the filter that needs to get changed out. My whole family were in the industry for a long time and my dad always taught me that oil changes and good tires will do more to protect your car long-term than almost anything else. But if you have synthetic oil... 6 months is pretty standard.

Depends on how old the car is. Newer cars use synthetic oils & go at least 10,000 miles. Older cars use regular oils and go about 5k. Change more often for dusty environments.

Hot water supposedly "opened the pores" and so you were supposed to start with hot water. Then when the pores were nice and open, you were supposed to use cleanser, then use cold water to "close the pores." Meanwhile, the boys were learning how to build stuff. Good times.

Really? We celibrate in sweden Easter like Trandagen (that was started to celibrate in 1500, sadly only celibrated in a small bit of Sweden nowdays) and has been the same way with feathers and putting a egg somewhere to find. Only difference is the candy that is used now, before it was just a homemade gift. Christmas, we had the "Bocken" before santa and he hit you if you were a mean child, so that changed but still give present and we had decorated tree since 1800 in Sweden as well, still got some decorations from 1870-1880. So I dont really know if I believe it was designed in the 1950's like it is today.

When I was a kid, Easter giving was strictly candy. Now kids expect Easter presents. The real origin of Easter eggs comes from when Catholics and Orthodox Christians used to fast not just from meat, but from most forms of protein. Now, you can put off killing your chicken or livestock until after Easter, but those chickens don't care about liturgical calendars. So the eggs would pile up. You couldn't eat them, but they would keep well. So when people finally could eat protein, they had lots of eggs lying around and were pretty excited to finally be able to eat them.

This has already been stated, but milk is not good for bones nor does it have amazing health benefits. I love milk but it was all created by the big milk companies to push out more milk. They even did a study back in like the 50s or 60s where they had women lose weight with healthy diet that included milk and tried to say it was the milk that helped the weight loss... Pretty sure it was the low calorie, veggie based meals they had with that milk. Along that line of thought, most "diet" foods or processed foods designed to be "healthy" usually aren't healthier at all. They just wanted to Target both health concious and non health concious people at once. If it comes in a box, it probably still kinda bad for you. The best option is always gonna be whole foods with the least processing. But that doesn't make people money. Which leads to another big corporate lie: the fad diets that sell things like detox teas and diet pills. A lot of people may claim that "diets never work" and "you can't lose weight by just eating less and exercising" but that's just cause that kind of weight loss doesn't lead to profits for them. So they try to make you think you can't do it yourself, you have to pay money for pills and plans and drinks that will do the work for you.

This is flat out incorrect. Milk is an excellent source of calcium (yes I know there are others) which is needed to maintain bone density, helps blood clotting and other heart related things. The vitamin D that is also present in milk helps the body absorb this calcium too. This is why milk is promoted because it’s a “one-stop shop” for these vital nutrients.

But large parts of the world's population is lactose intollerant. In fact we are not meant to consume milk past the infant stage of our lives, and those of us who can still drink it as adults are the freaky mutants. Large parts of the world's population are doing just fine without drinking milk, without it causing problems with weak bones. Yes milk might be a source of calcium, but there are other ways to get that stuff, and if only you eat a varied diet, you are likely to get whatever you need of it by other means.

The key word there is *extreme* diets never work. Any of the fad diets or something really restrictive is basically useless. The only thing that really works is shifting your habits so that your diet is balanced and has all the necessary nutrients.

The vast majority of diests don't work because they severely restrict or eleiminate something from the diet. The person on said diet starts to crave what's missing then, after a while they cave and "blow the diet" and just give up on it. Also most of these diets may help people lose weight in the beginning but when the diet is stopped they "boomerang" - gain the weight back and then some.

This! We are not meant to drink cow’s milk. Dairy is the most inflammatory foods for this exact reason. Also, dairy only makes you fat and unhealthy. We do not need dairy. You can get calcium from vegetables that grow from the earth that we pluck, as intended. Cut out delicious dairy and you’ll lose all that plumped up extra weight on your body. Try it. If will happen like a miracle, that’s how bad cheese, milk, butter, etc is for us.

"as intended" is a funny way to talk about things that stem from the agricultural revolution, while drinking milk has been around since homo sapiens went north and needed nutrition. It's not necessary, but it's also not unhealthy in the right amounts!

Mine last about 5 years, I am 230lbs and spend 12 to 23 hours a day in bed depending on how ill I am. If I could afford the bespoke for my lifestyle £1000 one, it might last a decade, or might not. My first pay check went on a new bed and upset my father..."Was the bed I provided not good enough for you?" No, it wasn't. It was inherited with the original 1950s mattress. He also took to using my bed whenever his back hurt, so I moved up to the attic and he couldn't make the stairs with a bad back.

40 Facts And Theories Spread By Corporations That Have Been Proven To Be Fake Yet People Still Believe To Be True The idea of Type A and Type B personalities were essentially created by tobacco companies that promoted the initial study. The study found that Type A personalities had an increased risk of coronary artery disease and, conveniently enough, would also smoke more because those hard workers need the stress relief. This would let tobacco companies deflect the blame on any studies showing the association between heart disease and tobacco by saying that their personality type was the confounding factor.

A lot of the on sale yellow clearance tags at Lowes that say something like WAS $44.99 NOW $24.99 is fake because when I look it up in the system it still shows MSRP as $24.99 and under that is the ADVT or advertised price and that is usually blank. Not on sale just a ploy to get you to buy it. If it sounds too good to be true ask someone to look it up under 5.1 in Genesis. Everyone has access to it. Also it's easier if you can give us the item number from the tag. Its also often on the item itself. A 6 digit number.

I think that that is actually illegal. If you want to advetise something like that, you have to have had that product available for the original price for a period. However, I don't think that that period has to be that long, and I don't think that the control on that area is very strickt so you'd probably get away with faking it.

I think it is a requirement on all kinds of food. You also see it on rock salt too. I mean it has been stored under ground for thousands of years and all you did was to dig it up and bag it, and now all of a sudden it is expected to expire? Keep it dry and prevent contaimination and you'd probably be fine eating it (in moderate quantities) for several decades to come (even hundreds of years in the unlikly case that you live that long)

That cows need to be milked. It's not quite a *myth*, but it's lacking some pretty important [context](https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/mar/30/dairy-scary-public-farming-calves-pens-alternatives) - specifically, that they have to give birth to induce lactation, just like humans. However, their milk production dries up after a while, when their calves would've been moving onto eating grass, so they need to be re-impregnated again. The calves are sort of surplus to this process, so they're taken away shortly after they're born. Edit: Cows also "need to be milked," because we've bred them to produce as much milk as freaking possible, even when it [negatively impacts their health](http://www.humanesociety.org/assets/pdfs/farm/hsus-the-welfare-of-cows-in-the-dairy-industry.pdf).

this is how all mammals work. back in the day there would be women who would just continue to breast feed children. either the mom died or for some reason could not breast feed. these women would continue to produce milk long after their children were grown because they continued to use their mammary glands. you might have heard the term before: wet nurse

There is a huge amount of variation to all these aspects depending on farming practice though. Cows have been bred to produce more milk than a calf needs. There are farming practices that keep the calf with the mother to feed as long as possible so that the milk keeps flowing longer (any human who's done baby-led weening wtih relate to this) and the excess is still so much that it is profitable to do it this way. Male calves, once raised, can be used for meat. The major issues come with the meat industry not using dairy-breeds for meat so the calves get culled early, thrown away, and the mothers are factory farmed without breaks. That's the worst case, but it does not have to be like that and it was never traditionally like that either.

Grew up on a farm, and you really do want to milk them. Their udders HURT if you don't. Lactation ends (on our herd anyway) naturally. Also, most don't bother impregnating anymore, since humans inject hormones, etc.

Figs and soybeans (not soy products) if you must avoid milk and want calcium, I've been told by fellow medical doctors. But like actual raw figs.

Calcium that you ingest does not do anything to your bones . Your bones flat out cannot "absorb" calcium and the calcium in the milk you drink 100% leaves your body. There's only one way to "build bone" and that's with weight bearing exercise. The calcium lie is a product of marketing.

Certain colors being associated with genders. Pink and blue becoming girls' and boys' colors wasn't a thing until the mid-1900s as a way to sell more clothes. Edit: I did some more research to check myself and the line is more blurry than I initially learned. For instance, it's debated whether corporations put out these color associations on their own accord, or whether it was a response to a growing cultural inclination. There are a few theories about why culture might have inclined itself to specify genders in the mid-later-1900s: -The post-WW2 return of men to the workforce and ideas of a working class, nuclear family might have emphasized a need to reinforce gender roles (stay at home mother and working father) through a set color differentiation. -A growing trend of parents doing pre-birth gender reveals led to a growing need for gender differentiation. -The decision that pink should represent femininity might be traced to a series of icons in pop culture such as Jackie Kennedy on the day of the JFK assassination, Marilyn Monroe in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, etc. -An, albiet less common, theory posits that pink badges worn by homosexual men in Nazi concentration camps led to the idea that pink is a symbol for femininity. There was actually solid evidence dating back to pre-WW1 of the idea of gender signification with blue and pink, but it was either conflicting or the opposite of what we know today. Most of the evidence was from corporations, so that may be evidence to support my post.

Yes! Red was a masculine color and for men, while the lighter shade was for babies. Blue was feminine with its lighter shade for babies. Back in the 1800s and early 1900s!

My father remembers these alignments from when he was growing up in Brooklynn in the 1940s/1950s. He also says that all the statues of the Virgin Mary in church were wearing blue robes. My father in law, who grew up around in the same time in rural Alabama, remembers pink being for baby girls and blue for baby boys.

"Pink, being the stronger colour, is best suited to the boy while the more delicate blue is better for girls" Paraphrased, but IIRC the association with the Virgin Mary's veil meant that blue was seen as a feminine colour.

Does it really matter if parent's "gender code" their babies with colours though? Babies don't care, they can't tell the difference. It's only an issue if parents are doing it to older children who don't want to wear said colour.

The messaging doesn't stop with babies usually. Not that it matters to me but it was rather shocking to see how opinionated 3 year old preschoolers were about what "girl" costumes, games, and colors are supposed to be when my kid went to preschool. He was Rainbow Dash for Halloween one year and he got a million compliments from adults but kids in his preschool had opinions lol.

40 Facts And Theories Spread By Corporations That Have Been Proven To Be Fake Yet People Still Believe To Be True That cell phones can actually interfere with aircraft systems. They can’t. All cell phone signals are either digital, like WiFi, which can’t interfere with any other device (take note that you can have multiple devices on the same WiFi network with no trouble); or the cell phone uses radio bands outside the communications bands used by aviation and therefore can’t interfere. And besides, all the wires and electronics in airplanes are shielded from these signals anyway.

There is a non-zero chance a phone could interfere though. You might be in an old plane that has unshielded electronics, or the shielding on a device might be damaged and your phone happens to do something at the correct frequency. It's probably not going to happen, just like you are probably not going to die from eating food past it's expiration date, but it's better to just not take the risk at all.

    Mat Hall

Nope; if a plane is old enough to have unshielded electronics then it's almost certainly so old as to have no electronics, or at least none that are critical, and RF shielding requirements have actually *decreased* over the past 5 decades - check out any old electronics from the 70s! The real reason using cellphones on planes was banned was due to the network infrastructure impact of having 100s of phones all attempting to connect to a cell all at once, then a few seconds later connect to another, then another as the plane flies overhead. Now that technology has improved this is no longer such an issue.

There are some older phones and electrical devices (we’re talking older than the unbreakable Nokia) that absolutely did futz with electrical signals in planes. The reason behind the ‘don’t use on planes’ blanket rule was basically because they don’t want to read off the huge page of what isn’t acceptable. So, your modern device won’t mess it up, but the guy with his ancient brick phone might.

I think this is because in the past, cell phones and some electronic devices did actually transmit on frequencies that affected plane electronics. How do you think those digital phone signals get from your phone to the receiving stations? Modern phones are digitally encoded but still transmit radio waves.

It’s a magnitude of risk issue. The issue is no where near as simple as the post suggests. As per Mondays comment above there may be old electronics that are not certified against phone signals etc. for example some 5g radio bands are very close to the radio altimeters in some planes. Simply put the airline industry and regulators are so risk averse that they ban everything until proven otherwise. As an example see the FAAs statement on 5g https://www.faa.gov/newsroom/faa-statements-5g

I always thought this was a myth propagated to stop people from killing each other rather than having to put up with the usual obnoxious (and always loud) phone use by some passengers. But in recent years the rules have definitely been relaxed a lot.

Ehem, I was actually told to turn off my phone when I was on a small general aviation airplane, as you could hear its effect on the radio. So while a phone may not make the engine quit and bring down the plane, it can actually cause a minor nuisance, just like when you hear its effect on your computer speakers. Furthermore some of the navigational equipment on a plane works by picking up radio signals from various ground equipment and if you sheild them, you will also remove the signals you need to detect. You can control what the standard equiptment on the plane emits of noise, and design it not to interfere, but keeping track of what can come from all kinds of more or less random electronic devices that the passengers may bring is next to impossible, and hence the best option is to make a simple rule of turning it all off, as the effect can be hard to predict.

I try and tell my mom: "This is all just lifestyle marketing: you are literally paying an extra dollar for nothing more than a label that has absolutely nothing to do with how healthy something is or how good for the environment it is, just how much they can get you to think that they are. They are blatantly and shamelessly ripping you off." and she just refuses to buy the normal stuff.

My tip is read up on things that is important to you. Prioritise things you prefer. If it's biodiversity, locally produced, no pesticides, free range animals. I think it's to much much polarization between production methods. Best practice by regional conditions. So different things work better/worse depending on, so just don't do in the way your neighbour/another country does just because. And both organic farmer och cenventional farmers can sow flowers for pollinators, for example. It's not mostley the method, but how someone implements things. Sort of :)

We had more fun decorating for our junior prom than actually going (the theme was Crazy by Aerosmith so we had a lot of fun, wild decorations we created). But proms were definitely overrated. and sometimes the term natural can even be taken quite far. natural only mean that it was not chemically synthezised in a lab but processed from something found in nature, but it certainly does not mean "like you'd make it at home" or that there is no "weird stuff in it". E.g. a natural red die you often see used in food is extracted from a bug... not exactly what I use when cooking. But hey it can be found in nature, and hence it can be labeled natural.

If they were truly all natural you'd have to keep them in a fridge so they wouldn't spoil because most natural ingredients are plant or food based. Natural, in business terms, generally just means they haven't added any additional colors, flavors or preservatives. They're still using chemicals. But chemicals aren't bad. There's this weird aversion to chemicals that has been pushed on people to sell products. You're much more likely to have a toxic reaction to Stephanie's Homemade Face Cream that she made in her unclean house w/o gloves, than to Nivea. There's a reason you want to make sure things are FDA approved and certain chemicals are used and that's to keep you from getting burns, allergic reactions, etc. There are entire sections on youtube and tiktok dedicated to the 'natural' ingredient lipstick or face cream someone bought from some random person with no legal oversight to make sure the product is safe and they end up with horrific skin issues and bacterial infections.

I work in moderation for some US based companies and the number of times I've seen people complain about a product and follow it with "You will be hearing from my lawyers" is ridiculous. Mostly because once a legal threat is made, customer service *can no longer engage* which means a problem that might have had a simple fix like a replacement part or refund, can't be fixed.

No, this is a myth. Father Christmas is unchanged since the poem A Visit From St Nicholas (1823) and has been wearing red since at least 1870, when Thomas Nash painted him. As cola was not invented until the 1880s, it's obvious that Coca-cola merely appropriated Santa due to the matching colour scheme, rather than creating his colours as is apocryphally suggested.
