This is a sad story about a 3-year-old male of mixed breed dog called Moby who was brought to a shelter at the end of November 2016 because his owner died.

People working and volunteering in a shelter are very happy to find new owners for the abandoned cats and dogs. However, the sad truth may be hiding behind the kindness.

On 17th January one elderly couple (let’s name them V.) came to the shelter “Klajūnas“ („Wanderer“) to find a new friend and a family member. Due to personal they seemed to be warm, caring and responsible people. When they chose Moby they made a promise to love and take a good care of their new family member. But after ten days the shelter was informed that Moby is dead. One of the volunteers went quickly to the village where the dog was supposed to live to check it out. At first when asked V. told that they gave Moby away to a relative, then it changed to a stranger but finally they confessed: V. killed a dog by themselves. The saddest point is they don’t even regret it. The woman said “it’s only a dog, soon I will get another one” and the man wondered why it is a problem. When police came the bloody ax was found, it was also blood in a car trunk and the man even showed the outskirts where they had thrown the dead body away. Like a rubbish. One more horrible thing: neighbours heard the dog screaming and saw him being beaten with a metal stick and ax. But they did nothing.

On the 4th February dozens of protesting people came to a village where this crime occurred. They held posters written with “We are sorry“, „Murderers“ and with an image of a dog. The people were shouting “murderers” as they stood in front of a suspect’s house. Some women cried. The purpose was to draw attention to animals rights in Lithuania.

The couple has been charged with animal cruelty on 27th January.

This story won’t awake Moby but he has deserved to be respected, though after death. It also brings one huge pledge with it: please do not close your eyes to what is happening around. Sometimes you can be the only chance for those who cannot defend by themselves. Be a hero.
