The Imago Mundi (published 6th Century) is the oldest known World map, and depended on word-of-mouth directions such as "and when you get to the Dairy Queen what used to be a Dairy King, turn left and South America will be on your right".

Some autistic persons are able to draw whole landscapes after just one look. I saw a tv doc in which an autistic artist drew cities after one quick flight on an helicopter

Not the pic I would have chosen to highlight this program. All I see is a Keith Haring wannabe. I found this delightful offering from the 2019 program (https://dsny.cityofnewyork.us/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/Trucks-of-Art-2022-RFP.pdf) painted by sanitation worker Jillian White. Scan down at the link for the pictures. All of the paint used in the project is unwanted paint left in cans or spray bottles donated by the public. One of my earlier memories is being 4 years old after an evening rainstorm in the Summer. It was still light out and a giant rainbow appeared. we started running through the wet pavement trying to catch the end of the rainbow. To this day wet rain on hot asphalt is one of my favorite smells and this photo reminds me of it.

Couldn't find this particular church, but this project is definitely still going on. Found this terrific story from last month about Pohick Church in Lorton, Virgina, which George Washington helped design and build. It now has a plaque not only acknowledging the slaves that actually built it, but naming the ones they could identify: https://www.washingtonpost.com/history/2023/03/15/pohick-church-george-washington-enslaved/

It’s because of PizzaGate. There was a conspiracy theory in the US during the presidential election of 2016 that some pizza delivery stores were actually fronts for human trafficking and child abuse. This was false but remarkably persistent.

That's from pinpoints of light filtered through the leaves of the tree. It's the same as a camera obscura. The pinpoint aperture focuses and inverts the image to project onto the nearest surface. Cool, huh?

I was down in Southern Illinois during the 2017 eclipse. We were in the path of the total eclipse, and it was amazing, and kind of freaky. Realizing that it's the middle of the day and the light is getting weaker is really strange. Carbondale, Southern Illinois will get ANOTHER total eclipse next year.

You have to pay the taxes on anything you win. I've read that most people who win cars on game shows end up selling them because of this. A friend came in 2nd on Jeopardy and they were going to award her a vacation in San Francisco but she turned it down.

Sad this has to be a thing. At our 20 week scan, the angle of the sensor at the very first image made it plain as day to me. I just started laughing and my wife and sonographer couldn't understand why, the more they asked the funnier it seemed to me. She couldn't quite get the same angle again. So for two full minutes I knew we had a daughter, and noone else knew.

I was that last generation that didn't know. When my mom was pregnant the nearest ultrasound machine was five hours away so they didn't know if I was going to be a boy or a girl. Not something you really see any more. They used an EKG machine to test my heartbeat and the best they could say was I was probably going to be a girl. Probably.

This actually protects the plants. It's a common practice in apple orchards and strawberry fields. There is a small space of air between the plant and the ice that is cold but not frozen. This protects the plant from freezing.

The water kept the temperature near freezing point. The plants can have a little bit of frost. This showering saved them.

actually saved plants.Water saturated in plant cells serves as a protective cover, also known as an insulator, padding the plant cell wall and shielding it from the damaging impacts of a freezing night. Water likewise expands the soil’s capacity to hold heat absorbed from the sun, protecting the plant’s foundations and shielding them from damage.

Informative post on Reddit identifies it as an ancient Kufic script called Bannai (https://www.reddit.com/r/CemeteryPorn/comments/11srkps/gravestone_written_in_an_ancient_kufic_script/). The first part translates as "Al Fatiha (first verse of the Quran), No God, but Allah, May god have mercy upon him" and then his name and dates in English (Rami Ghaleb 1959-2016). Nicely done!

Do all the plugs have three prongs? Many U.S. only have two prongs. None that I have ever seen have diagrams. That would require a level of trust in the intelligence of the every day U.S. citizen from the regulatory organizations.

For those not in the UK (I live in the US now) I actually lived in an older house in the UK that had three different outlet types. Depending on when the wiring was done. I had two irons, one for upstairs (3 pin round) and one for downstairs (3 pin square). When my husband arrived in the UK for college (this was when we were much younger but actually only the 80s) and saw that you had to buy the plug separate from the appliance depending on your outlet types, he was appalled 😂

That's not a bulletproof vest, those are the armor panels that go inside of a bulletproof vest, and they are very expired (warranty ended in 1999). Kevlar fibers break down over time and one that old shouldn't be counted on to protect you from anything (though it most certainly would be better than nothing).

This seems very unfair for both the drivers and the dog. The owner is putting the onus on the drivers to ensure the safety of the dog when the dog shouldn't even be able to reach the road if the owners properly protected their pet.

Even if it did—which I agree is improbable—one russet potato is heavier than an entire bag of chips, so it wouldn't have made it past the weighing.

A camera, hon, you're describing a normal camera, lol! Man, I feel like I'm 92 here. All of our pictures from the '60s until the 2000s were total crapshoots. Take a load of pics at your birthday party, wait two weeks for them to be developed, and find maybe five off the roll (of 24) that are any good. Sounds weird today, I know, but it's how we ended up with odd pictures of Auntie Mary making that face or simply ones where we don't look perfect. Sad to think of the lack of photo albums in the future. All of our memories will be on Facebook or Instagram instead and who knows what we really look like for all of the filters and Photoshopping.

Check out the shelves they are sitting on. The whole lot has gotten wet at some point which dissolved the shelves and caused the labels to mold and rot off.

Shows that shooting a gun up in the air can kill people. There was an episode of Myth Busters where they investigated this. They confirmed it’s true. You can get killed and there have been several confirmed cases.

A bullet shot into the air must be shot completely vertically in order for gravity to cancel out the force of the gas propulsion, reducing it to only the terminal velocity of weight of the bullet itself (which is rarely deadly, except to elderly or infants). If the bullet is shot with any kind of angle, it can retain enough of the gas propulsion to be lethal.

No, it's just behind his head. It was originally holding the weapon next to his head, but over time and as people made more renditions, the weapon has shifted to now be behind his head, and people now think it's stabbing him in the head. evo-768x21...88bb33.jpg evo-768x216-644fc5d88bb33.jpg

The king of hearts traditionally represents Charlemagne (Charles the Great), King of the Franks and Lombardy, and Holy Roman Emperor. The other Kings are also meant to represent historical Kings too, but the queen cards (which came along hundreds of years after the king cards) were all depictions of goddesses like Athena, not real queens.

Probably NOT water ice. Yes, "heavy water" would sink, but that's a large quantity of a rare isotope. Water doesn't float because it has air; it floats because it is very unique in that the molecules can pack in more tightly when they can flow past each other than when they are locked into a crystalized pattern. (There are a handful of highly reactive elements that also do this, and a few other molecules that do this, including one form of Silicon dioxide that makes up much of the Earth's crust.)

    Christof Irran

I don't think the ice sank. The ice was dumped into the pitcher first, and then water was added. the ice at the bottom simple got stuck and will eventually float to the surface.

Water expands when frozen so ice floats on water. Any explanation for the photo? Was all the water initially frozen, so it’s still stuck at the bottom?

My mum’s old house had a sunken bath like this. It was honestly terrifying to go near and I was always scared mum would fall into it and badly hurt herself. One of my dogs fell in one day and couldn’t get out. Fortunately she wasn’t hurt and I was home to rescue her. The bath in the picture is worse, though, because the room is so much smaller and you have to stand right next to the bath to use the sink.

Have them all over here in Ontario. On street so snow plows can clear the roads easier. In parking lots on the far end of some rows so they have an area to deposit all the snow after clearing the parking lot.

It might be near a sports oval or arena and they don’t allow parking during the game season? I’ve seen similar signs near stadiums etc. where I live.

The “account limit” is $1000000 so I suspect that $855452 is what the restaurant OWES to the bank. This is a line of credit.

City wants to widen the road. Billboard is in the way. The owner had several such billboards, and the city demolished a couple of them but didn't pay the owner for it. When they take eminent domain, they're required to pay a fair market value for what they take. The city is trying to argue that the billboards were placed too close to the road, while the owner is arguing that the road was previously widened in the 80's, and is encroaching on the billboard. The argument they made for not paying for the other billboards stems from them arguing that they were traffic hazards.

A lot of business class laptops have these. The keyboard is mounted in a tray so that spilled liquids flow around the keyboard into the tray and drain out instead of ending up on the main board. Ideally, the worst that happens after a spill is that you need to clean or replace the keyboard instead of the entire laptop.

Depending on where the ashes are gonna be buried, you don't want non-decomposing medical components put in the ground with them. They're likely being separated by the crematory staff before putting the ashes into the urn, and maybe given to the family.

Hip replacements (and other larger metal parts) are usually filtered out of the ashes by the crematorium. They're made of titanium and are recycled.

There is a firm in Italy that salvages from the ashes prosthetic limbs, surgical screws and the like. They are very expensive and the materials they are made of are recycled and sold to manifacturers. Also those things don't fit in the usual ash containers and would simply got thrown away

They don't do that here these days. Nothing but finely pulverised bone. It wouldn't surprise me if they tipped the body out of the casket and reused it.

    La Petite Morte
    Community Member
2 years ago (edited) Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

I don't know where 'here' is, but this is pretty common. Once a body is reduced in a retort, the remains are pulled out into a pan. That pan is then put into a pulverizer for a few minutes, which is actually just a small machine that vibrates the cremains at a high oscillation rate to break apart any clumps. They then run a large magnet over the cremains to pick up any medical or other miscellaneous metal that might be in the pan, but sometimes pieces won't be picked up by the magnet, depending on polarity. After that they bag them & put them in a temporary urn, usually just a square plastic box. It's not uncommon for crematory workers to skip steps or rush through the process of they're slammed or tired, so this isn't all that unusual in the USA. Especially with older cremains. ~~~ As to 'tipping the body out...' most cremations are done in cardboard containers or simple pine boxes unless the family bought the casket specifically for the cremation. If there was a service with the body present beforehand is common practice to rent a casket just for the service. Besides, if they 'tipped the body out' then the casket hardware wouldn't be in the cremains, now would it?

The dimensions are specific to a 2.5 inch hard drive, many of which get replaced with SSD's when they fail so the SSD needs to have the same mounting holes in the same places as the old Hard drive.

To the other comments, you don't really need to mount an SSD as it has no moving parts. I have mine just shoved somewhere at the bottom of the case.

It replaces a mechanical drive, so it has to be the same size to fit the mountings

Guessing that's to update the inflight entertainment package rather than to let you play doom with the guy in row 12.

Is your dad a vet? Because I am and I have the same thing: it is a great visual aid to show people how tiny they are and could be missed by just looking at your pet, especially ones with dark fur. It is a great way to help explain why pets need flea/tick prevention.

Haha I have one of these too. I had two dogs who constantly went in the long grass and got ticks. Besides the alcohol, I put several drops of oil on the top so the ticks can't escape.

I have one of these! My two dogs love to go out in the tall grass but they come home with ticks. Besides the alcohol I put a layer of oil to keep the ticks in the alcohol. I understand that you are not supposed to crush the ticks or pinch them with a tissue as they can "Vomit" stuff. This is the best way to get rid of them. Toss the plastic jug when you're done.
