If you ever find yourself in a space that brings up a feeling of ‘not knowing what’s up but something’s definitely up’ you may have encountered a liminal space. Obsessed over by fans who chase the unsettling feel, liminal spaces have become somewhat of a mysterious phenomenon surfing around the internet.

According to Imgur user RobJustice, “The liminal space is the 'crossing over' space, a space where you have left something behind, yet you are not yet fully in something else. It's a transition space.”

And thanks to the r/LiminalSpace subreddit with 237k members, we now have some of the most captivating examples to rest (or stress) our eyes on. From bowling alleys and abandoned buildings to almost surreal window views and places that feel strangely familiar although you have never been there, it’s hard not to stare for more.

And let us know how you feel about these liminal spaces in the comments below!

I believe this is called ICM, intentional camera movement, the photographer finds am interesting scene like this and using freehand or a tripod quickly move the camera around during the exposure. Vertical movements are most effective on trees and horizontal movements look great on landscapes and seas. Also wiggling the camera around counts as ICM, as long as there is intention! Pretty cool tbh.

u r correct charlie. im a photographer and i do this sometimes for landscape photos. i cant however for wildlife photography unless the animal is moving then it looks like they r going at super speed. did it for a photo with a running cheetah once. u keep the camera focused on one point but the rest has that sort of blurred effect which is y the tree in the middle is so clear compared to the rest

The best thing about lockdown! My husband's commute was quicker and safer. No accidents. Quicker meaning he didn't have to leave as early because no traffic jams, not speeding. He actually said other people were stupid because there wasn't much else for the police but stop speeders without all the accidents! He said he had never seen so many people pulled over!

All of 2020 was liminal. But this sums it up beautifully.

To find out more about these mysterious spaces that have been capturing the internet's imagination, Bored Panda talked to Lillie Marshall, an English teacher and writer who runs Around the World "L" Travel and Life Blog. Lillie is also a self-confessed fan of liminal spaces and discussed the phenomenon in her articles that you can check out here and here.

Lillie said she has been fascinated by the concept of liminal spaces since she was little. “I loved thinking and writing about them. So much of our lives are spent in these in-between spaces, and yet we so often ignore them,” she said and added: “Once you can see the importance and beauty of liminal spaces, it makes it much easier to be in the moment and enjoy the journey as much as the destination.”

When asked how she’d describe a liminal space, Lillie explained it has to do with a magical and transformative quality. “Liminality can exist in physical space, time, and states of being, and refers to that in-between moment where you're between two things.”

Moreover, “It is a sometimes uncomfortable—but extremely important—era of transformation and shifting. Often we get impatient with these transitional spaces, but they are KEY, and are beautiful and profound if you allow yourself to truly be in them and understand their magical gifts,” she concluded.

Interestingly the brain is always trying to map out what is about to happen and fills in the unexpected. It does this by detecting patterns. Deja vu is the feeling when the brain is mapping out what is about to happen but instead of filling in the unexpected it is using a similar memory with similar patterns, triggering a different sensation in the brain than normal everyday mapping.

That's just for kids. For adults, there's a small town that isn't on any map. You stop at the local diner for a burger and a coke, and you can't help noticing that your waitress looks exactly like Janis Joplin. As she's giving you your check, she passes you a note reading "get out while you still can." But it's already too late.

We used to live in the Appalachian mountains in VA and years later went back that way for a trip. We chose a hotel just off the interstate, but Google Maps wanted us to take an exit well before arriving. Out of curiosity, we followed the directions on Maps and ended up on a harrowing narrow switchback with blind curves, no guardrail, and a sheer dropoff straight down about 20 - 30 feet to a raging river. The road it wanted us to take beyond that didn't exist. I emailed Google to notify them, but never heard back.

Google is notorious for this. And we humans are notorious for setting aside common sense and placing our trust in technology despite the obvious signs that it is leading us straight into confusion. The O.P. hadn't seen anyone for an hour. I bet her common sense HAD tickled her brain 50+ minutes prior, when there was no Taco Bell sign evident. Kind of like when Google led me and a very anxious friend down an overgrown, swampy trail that displayed as a full-fledged street connecting us to our destination. We had dual supplies of common sense telling us to turn around before it was too late (not a really safe place to be after dark due to natural hazards topographically and creature critter wise) but it still took hours to throw in the towel and give up.

Rob said he hadn’t heard about liminality so he did a bit of reading. “A few days later I was looking through old pictures on my phone and realized I'd taken a few liminal space pictures myself over the years. Rob believes that there’s “something strangely powerful to the human psyche about transitionary places. The feeling of being between two places is an uncanny feeling, whether it's literal or psychological.”

This feeling can occur in any place. “I recently took a family vacation and we spent several hours in airports, where I kept thinking about the concept of liminality; We're not home but we're not on our vacation yet.” Rob explained that just like most transitions, “it's stressful but there is something comforting knowing that it's temporary. I think that's where people find themselves drawn to liminal pictures. It's temporary places made permanent."

When it comes to describing this phenomenon, Rob said that his favorite definition is that “a liminal space is a 'crossing over' or transition space. It's a place where you have left something behind yet you are not yet fully in something else. It's the space between other spaces.”

Turns out that, “liminal is from the Latin word limen, meaning 'a threshold' so a liminal space is often a boundary point of one space beginning and another space ending,” he concluded.

Technically there is no "night" in space. Astronauts would still see sunrise and sunsets and experience bright and dark periods but instead of once a day it would be 16 times a day. The further out you go in space the shorter "night" spans.

I have dreamed of this place, no lie. We were in the ocean and the waves were taller than the buildings and I got sucked down into these caverns where the water fell upwards, upwards water falls along the cliffs, which was perfect because in my dream, this was actually were my class was located and I was late to class since I had decided to go on vacation during the end of the world so pretty convenient that the ocean pulled me down a cavern to my creepy classroom where my professor gave a talk about relativity.

Most folks would be looking at their PDA anyway. I would bring a book. My phone is just voice and text. But it is Military Spec, and can take drops on concrete, water, snow, heat, dust, cold. When I want to get on the internet, I have an amazing PC at home.

Good grief! Can you imagine how cool this would be to SCUBA in with the fish? We had a 600 gallon aquarium you could get in with the fish. We had it stored when we moved cross country and it was stolen...the thing had glass an inch thick and weigh a TON! We are pretty sure there are not many like it around. I hate thieves!

Beyond the glass walls you can see distorted giant forms moving in the mist bellow, huge shadows blurring the sun while faint noises like distant screams echo in the corridor. Did the Ancient Ones return? Or is it your mind giving up and playing games after another day inhaling the chocking fumes of the city? The answer is at the end of the tunnel. But be aware, once you'll reach it there's no turning back!

Every night they left their hidey holes, shallow caves and damp borrows to gather here. They didn't dare to step out from among the trees, they were only shapeless forms carefully moving from one cover to another. Nonetheless they came every night here, to the lights hanging over the endless strips that brought terrible dangers to them during day time. But at night they were here forming a silent circle. They watched the lights changing colors as they listened to the whisper of the old ones. That they used to stand tall, walked freely day and night. They rode these roads with their parents at the wheel passing under the lights without fear. Unbelievable the stories were. Still, the lights kept changing their color, hour after hour, day after day, year after year. Still they came here to watch, to listen and to see the change.

I can hear and smell it. The sounds of the boiler hissing off behind some closed door, some random clang coming. The sound of a door closing some distance away, echoing down the hall. The smells of old books, and that odd cedar stuff they used to clean vomit or blood up with...There's also a curious acrid smell of something burning that you can't quite place the source of.

A thin, tall figure of a man was slowly approaching from the other end of the bridge. His steps were soft, his long shadow was reaching for me as I stood in the middle. His burning hypnotic gaze was rendering me immobile while all the voices in my head begged me to run. Holmes voice pierced through the night breaking the magic: "Drop the scalpel, Dr. Moriarty! There's no escape for you this time!"

The lab was quite at this time of the night, all the specimens asleep in their small pressurized chambers. Except for one. He woke up, feeling his skin prickling, his fur standing as on the other side of the Earth the Moon was slowly covering up the Sun, ebbing its power. It won't last long, but it will be enough. He concentrated on the thick glass door separating him from the world and there was a small 'ding' sound as it broke. Suddenly an alarm sounded, then another even louder outside, then one more and one more till every sirens were blaring all over town as the cracks started to spread on the floor and on the walls.

I remember once back in the early 90s, I was travelling back from Edinburg to Manchester,I was on a train to Motherwell, when there was an announcement telling passengers to were travelling to Manchester to get off at the next stop. I remember that it was Easter Monday but it was cold and there were snow storms over the West of the UK. We get off at this station, and it's not been used for well over 10 years and only four of us get off. It's dark and the snow is really falling heavily, so we stand together as a group to try and keep sheltered. We were there for about 40 minutes wondering where we are, why we've been dropped here and if we'll be here all night. Eventually a train does turn up and we almost cry with relief!!!! Scariest 40 minutes I've ever spent on a station platform.

I used to clean those floors. I was required to vacuum them every day. I was required to empty the trash at least twice a day. I was required to go around spraying insecticide twice a week. My fellow workers were mostly from Jalisco and Vera Cruz. I do not speak their language. But i speak LA pidgin. So that's how we survived that . This photo brings back memories.

As you enter the room the door will close behind you and it won't open again till you finish your task. She's in the chair in the corner, you have all the tools necessary on the table. You have about an hour before the oxygen is gone. If you choose well there will be a stranger, you've never seen her before. When you are done you can just walk over to the other room, set her free and you can leave together. On the other hand, if you choose the wrong room .. Well, it can be difficult. I will monitor from outside. Good luck!

I've been there before. It's a really cool place with tons of really bizarre rooms. The Infinity Room is cantilevered out over the trees -- there is nothing beneath you. At the end of this room where it comes to a point, is a window that you can look down and see the tree tops. Pretty cool place. Their website has a photo of this room from the outside on their homepage: https://www.thehouseontherock.com/

Big buildings are always spooky withouth people in them - my High School was a former quarantine center for zoo animals, and the basement was scary AF when only my buddy and me had to get stuff from there
