Most of us would probably agree that living through these difficult times, it's quite easy to forget how spectacular and mesmerizing the world we live in truly is. Luckily, we've got a lot of talented artists and annual photography contests, such as the Landscape Photographer of the Year competition, that do a very good job of reminding us of all these things.

For the 13th time, this year's Landscape Photographer of the Year competition invited both professional and amateur photographers to celebrate the mesmerizing landscape of the United Kingdom. The contest has four categories as well as the youth competition for photographers aged 18 or under. The winner of the whole contest gets awarded the prestigious title "Landscape Photographer of the Year 2020" and £10,000. In addition, there are also prizes of £1000 and £500 for the images judged the best and second-best in each of four categories. The best photographer in the youth competition becomes the "Young Landscape Photographer of the Year 2020" and wins £1,000.

With that being said, Bored Panda invites you to look through some of the most spectacular shots from the Landscape Photographer of the Year competition 2020.

Extremely bad work: this is heavily composited. As a photographer myself, I do composite shots myself (e.g. combining different shots of the same landscape with varying exposures), but this type of compositing way crosses over the threshold into the province of "cheating" and results in a totally nonsensical photo. This distasteful photo makes as much sense as compositing Dumbo the Flying Elephant into the night sky. There are so many more meritorious photos down below which have not received a single vote just by chance of the order in which these photos are placed, where the top photos get more views than the ones at the bottom. This photo is a total piece of rubbish by comparison.

I am so happy that there is another person that listens to Runrig. I know that they are waaaay before my time, but some of their songs transport me to such beautiful places and capture the true essence of Scotland. (Translation of the Scots Gaelic lyrics above for those who may be interested- I see Scotland of the high mountains, And the empty acres, flying low across the moorland lochs- the forests and the glens).

It may come to your surprise, but 99% of these photo's will likely have gone through some editing software. Even if just to brighten/highlight etc. I did art and photography in school and college, it's usually a given that you will at least use editing tools to brighten/darken areas of the image to really make your image stand out and have more depth. In my experience you'd be extremely lucky if you had the perfectly lit image with perfect shadows and highlights without some minor editing. That doesn't mean non-edited photos cant be great, of course they can. But generally in these sorts of competitions, photos probably get edited. :/

Isle of Harris will always hold a very special place in my heart. It is a truly a little gem to escape to if life is getting to chaotic. Would love to return to the crystal blue water once the pandemic is over...
