I applaud Isaac Wright Jr, but the Us "justice" system is seriously unfit for purpose. Partly it is the fault of gun culture, but mostly corruption and stupidity within thw legal system - from judges down to attorneys and anyone in between. The rich mostly escape serious penalties; the poor, the coloured, the brown and all of the disenfranchised are always in the frame.

As karmic as this feels, I have learned a long time ago that poachers are usually hired locals, usually poor and derelict, that poach on commission for the real poachers and traffickers, often white, always richer. Somehow that makes it a lot less satisfying. If only the lions has caught the kingpins and the consumers of any pseudoscientific medicinal made from endangered animals, it would have been more just. But we get what we can.

This is sadly true, and poaching is often the best paying job around. Defeating misinformation about things like rhino horn (literally just keratin!!) where it is consumed is key. On the other hand we have the disgusting "big game hunters" who think it somehow makes them great to kill beautiful animals. That is another front on this culture war that results in innocent dead animals for stupid reasons.

One could think that the phrase is about immortality—an idea might die, but the institution will live on. It will be replaced with something else only to keep the function of the previous thing or person alive but will not bring any real improvements to the table. Over the years, the justice system has seen many changes and still, it remains flawed and requires our immediate attention.

According to the Sentencing Project, the U.S. is the world’s leader in incarceration and the criminal justice system today is like a bicycle stuck in one gear—the prison gear. Over the last 40 years, the population in prisons and jails has increased by 500%, with more than 2M people serving a sentence today.
One explanation for this is the change in the sentencing law and policy, and not in the crime rate itself. Apparently he eventually got promoted and also won a civil lawsuit against Horne. However he is not with the police anymore and in 2014 (with FBI involvement) received a short prison sentence after another violent incident.

While sentencing people to prison has had some impact on crime, it’s not as successful as one might think. First, imprisonment is not as effective when it comes to youth and drug crimes: “When people get locked up for these offenses, they are easily replaced on the streets by others seeking an income or struggling with addiction.”
Next, people tend to “age out” of wrongdoing. There’s research that shows that crime starts to peak during the teenage years and begins to decline when people are in their mid-20s. Because of this reason, lengthy prison sentences are a counterproductive and costly approach, with the exception of targeting extremely dangerous criminals.

He was never convicted, he was in pre-trial confinement, and when the Lawyer presented this picture to the judge, the judge threw the case out. Further he told the police he was at the game, the police never checked up on, and he sued and won a lot of money because of that. If I remember this case correctly: the hit on the girl was ordered by a gang leader using a prison phone, and a deputy had a recording of the hit being ordered, that sat gathering dust in his car for a couple of years because he couldn't be bothered listening to it. The gang leader ordered the hit because the police told him during an interrogation that she was their witness who had identified him as their wanted murderer, using her full name, when she hadn't identified him at all.

Every false conviction should have severe consequences for the prosecutors, DA's office up to and including being disbarred. Why should anyone be falsely convicted, got to jail, and the liar lawyers have no consequences, charges brought against them. Instead they are not punished at all and continue without consequences to do it again.

Should have shredded the envelope or label. A lot of neighbors used to dump their empty plastic/paper Amazon packages and boxes anywhere in the alley way and the neighborhood watch would pick them up and place them back on the door step of the rightful owners. They always forget to take off the labels off the Amazon packages. I saw the look on someone's face walking my dog one morning. When they discovered the Amazon package was their carelessly discarded box from the day before and not a prime delivery. It was a funny sight.

At one point, we lived near a nature preserve, and we'd take walks there often. Then, all of a sudden, we started seeing bags of trash dumped there, wrecking the beauty of the preserve and endangering the wildlife that lived there. We came back and put on some rubber gloves, sifted through the trash, and BINGO; we found a piece of discarded mail with their names and address on it (seems they didn't recycle either). We contacted the city with this information, and they were very interested. Strangely enough, there was no more dumping after that.

One problem... There have been cases where someone hires a "junk removal" company to get rid of a bunch of stuff for them. There are plenty of cases where the cheap companies just take your trash and dump it somewhere... If that's the case, the original person isn't the "bad guy"

My brother owns a choose and cut Xmas tree farm up in the mountains. Depending on the weather, some of the dirt roads may be temporarily closed. Every year the JA's with a 4X4 who have never driven off road, try to impress someone by plowing their way into closed areas and then getting high centered. Kind of hard to get away with something like that when you have to be extracted by the owner and his tractor. But the others who violate the road closed signs really tear up the dirt roads, meaning they will have to be graded... again.

Lucky you: two guys from Kentucky came to Montreal, Canada, on a work assignment and went out on the town afterwards. The bar closed and the bartender told them about an after-hours place some 20 miles away. However, he only mentioned the address, not the distance. Before they arrived, the duo realized that they were running low on funds and decided to do a runner. So they did and were never heard from again. Turns out, they jumped the fence separating an industrial area from a very deep quarry and fell to their deaths in the dead of the night.

More parents need to correct this behavior. Especially the "back in my day parents"(boomers and gen Xers). Whether you raised them that way or not. Or they picked it up from childhood friend parents. The world is different today. It doesn't matter if your child is 2 years old or 60. Correct this behavior and admit any wrong you've done (if any) to encourage the behavior of hate. Needless to say, most people want fairness and this subreddit is a great place to see that justice does not fail to prevail. Still, if we wish for some positive shift in our society, harsh prison sentences should not be the primary tool for fighting crime. Using prevention, treatment and long-term public safety solutions should lead to change in the crime rates in the future.

As a lifelong atheist, I never once thought that "all Christians are Morons". That would include my grandparents and a bunch of people I consider valued friends and associates. Of course we disagree on pretty fundamental things, but religiousness =/= stupidity. When I am confronted with christians like these two, my contempt reaches a 10/10, but I also know enough of their religion that their interpretation is at least faulty and definately unbiblical. While not a free pass for all the crimes of the various churches, and there are many, I limit my contempt to individuals, not the entire group.

Read a story once about parents whose daughter was a type 1 diabetic and rather than get her to a hospital where she could get much needed and easily obtained insulin, they prayed. This poor girl died in agony. As a type 1 myself, I know the pain and misery that child had to have gone through because I was at death's door when I was diagnosed. Fortunately my parents aren't a**holes.

I knew of a couple years ago in Minneapolis who took their type 1 diabetic child exclusively to a chiropractor for treatment. Teachers alerted CPS and they took the parents to court. Very protracted battle, lots of interest groups weighing in....finally got him the proper medical treatment. I don't remember if the chiropractor faced disciplinary action. Sure hope so. Quack.

As an ex 911 dispatcher, I can say with 109% accuracy that non-emergency calls not only are a brutal waste of time and money, but they are putting at risk the lives of people who truly need a first responder. This bs of calling 911 for ANY non-emergency ought to include fines or jail time. Same goes for you jerks who won’t pull over for an emergency vehicle.

I think there is a confusion between the the war of Mexican independence from Spain and the Mexican revolutionary war, wish was civil war. both about 100 years apart. Mexico abolished slavery early in its history, and would not persecute run away slaves.

society has to finally acknowledge that men are subjected to abuse just as women are abused. many times, men will not report this because they think that no one will believe that a woman can hurt them or that they are unwilling to admit that a woman has beaten them. but, that is just the physical part of the abuse. cases such as depp's are much more common in that women will falsely accuse men for the sole purpose of abusing them mentally and emotionally not to mention publically condemnation for supposed acts. glad to see that depp was able to be seen as not the abuser but the victim in this case.

They were both abusive. They were both abused. Bring abusive doesn't mean you can't be abused and being abused doesn't mean you can't be abusive. Both acted in a despicable manner and Depp has a history of violence dating back to the early 90's, with arrests, resisting arrests and trying to escape police when being chased for speed. Heard is not better but they both have violent history.

I was on a train in the UK in 1989/90 when a similar incident happened. We skipped a stop, and went straight to Newcastle Upon Tyne where the train doors stayed locked. Except one door at either end, which the driver and train manager opened to allow the police to board. The police moved along the train in a pincer maneuver towards the centre, and they arrested the guy in the connection between our carriage and the next. There was quite a scuffle! Someone with an early mobile phone riding on the train had spotted someone wanted for some very violent crimes. Their picture had been on the news. They used their fancy new mobile phone to call it in. I like to think that I saw the equivalent of the Dr Crippin arrest for the mobile phone generation.

A 46-year-old man walked in high school in Serbia with an automatic gun and bag full of explosives. He fired two shots into the ceiling. This teacher heard the students screaming and came to check what's happening. He sent the students out of the classroom and tried to talk to the attacker, and when he, at one point, turned to the blackboard, the teacher jumped on him. The attacker fired two shots when attacked, but missed. Nobody was hurt by gunfire. The attacker was allegedly a person with mental illness who tried to take students as his hostages in an attempt to make the president of the country or the minister of internal affairs talk to him.

In my youth, a guy at work washed his company car with some detergent on a slow day. We worked with cleaning up after fires, and the detergent was extremely strong. He sprayed the car and looked totally chocked when the red paint started to run off and forming puddles on the garage floor. It all bacame an insurance claim and new paint.

Prove that it's price gouging and not part of the mechanism of capitalism. The first few months of covid lock down back in '19 caused supply to drop across pretty much venues offering goods while demand stayed about the same or even, in a number of cases, increased. This is still evident in the automobile market. My guess is you'd take advantage of this mechanism of capitalism too if you were in a position to benefit.

There appear to be multiple recent state and federal bills that will address this if passed. It looks like most cap the amount insurers can charge to $35/month. Not sure if anything is addressing the uninsured, but clearly there are attempts being made, rather than nothing. If you care about this issue, support the politicians fighting for it.

Sometimes people forget to put up their disabled parking placard. It is better to let the police issue a ticket and if the person is disabled, the ticket will be dismissed. Removing graffiti is not as easily accomplished.

To play chicken means to go up against someone and the chicken is whoever backs down first. The business was basically going up against the mandate and daring them to do something about their defiance of the mandate, thinking they would back down first.
