The practice of collecting wild edible plants and mushrooms has been around for centuries, with people in many parts of the world relying on them for sustenance.

But foraging is back in fashion with more and more people opting for sustainable food sources and ways to connect with nature. From forests and meadows to suburban yards and urban parks, with the right knowledge and skills, foraging can be done virtually anywhere.

So let's have a look at what people found while out foraging and captured in these pictures. Thanks to these three communities on Reddit (this, this, and this one) where foragers shared their treasure, we now have an amazing collection to look at!

Psst! After you are done with this post, make sure to check out our previous article with more incredible foraged goods.

To find out more about the art of foraging which is having a Renaissance of popularity right now, Bored Panda reached out to foraging expert Diego Bonetto.

Bonetto is an Italian native who has lived in Australia since the mid-1990s, who spends his time guiding novices, chefs, and other professionals through the parks and outskirts of Sydney looking for hidden-in-plain-sight ingredients. He is also a renowned author of a best-selling book “Eat Weeds, a field guide to foraging: how to identify, harvest and use wild plants,” which shows people how to engage with wild food sources, transforming your neighborhood into an edible adventure.

“From forest to the seaside, riverbank to city street – even your own yard – there is wild food and medicine available to those who know where to look. In the face of global challenges such as climate change, food insecurity and pandemics, we seek to empower ourselves with the information and skills that enable self-reliance and equip us to care for our families and communities,” Bonetto’s book explains, so if you’re interested, be sure to check it out!

When asked what are the reasons for foraging gaining popularity lately, Bonetto said that we are living in a time of great change and questioning. “People come to my workshops to learn about foraging for different reasons. Young families because they want their kids to have experiences outside and connect with nature,” he explained.

The legend is that if you step inside a fairy ring, the fairies make you dance all night until you collapse with exhaustion. Obviously this picture shows how true that is, the poor man has collapsed in a heap after entertaining fairies and pixies.

Meanwhile, “old migrants come to validate their knowledge because up until recently they were perhaps made fun of for harvesting wild food in parks or from the roadside. Their skills were not deemed cool or relevant before hipsters made it so.”

So it seems that every group of interested people has their own reasons for getting interested in foraging. “Journalists are interested in the story because it is an empowering one,” Bonetto continued. “It's applicable everywhere and reaches all kinds of audiences. It is also apolitical and a positive news story.”

“Gardeners come because they are familiar with the plants and want to find a way to use them. It is a similar reason for farmers, many are now seeking alternative ways to revitalize the land after overuse.”

While “survivalists have always been interested in learning how to utilize wild food and medicine and there is now certainly a growing number of people interested in self-sufficiency.”

Lastly, “chefs and bar people are interested in wild produce,” Bonetto said and added that they love the possibility of bringing new ingredients to the table, ones with unique stories and flavors.

We also asked Bonetto if there are potential dangers to foraging for those who have no knowledge or skills, and he confirmed that it’s indeed the case. “It is very important to know what you are doing, and what you are looking at before harvesting wild food and medicines. Please use common sense, and learn from experienced foragers before going out on your own.”

The best way to begin is to learn a few plants at a time and then build on your knowledge base, Bonetto suggests.

“I encourage new foragers to progressively increase their plant knowledge which will slowly build their ability to see more and more species in the landscape. You get good at it. Misidentification is a new forager's biggest threat, but also a great teacher.”

Not true. It'll make you feel pretty sick if you don't cook it right, but death is very unlikely. Like I said above, you can boil them in salt water to neutralize the toxin and then cook and eat them. Just don't skip the boiling part and they're fine. It's ridiculous how people are so scared of wild mushrooms and berries.

The mushroom is only a fruiting body of the mycelial organism living in the soil. Picking one is equivalent to taking an apple off of an apple tree.

There are numerous foraging mistakes beginners make, and here are the most common ones, according to Bonetto. First, it’s misidentification. Second, it’s “collecting wild food from polluted environments. The best place to forage is your own backyard.” And third, it’s important not to fall victim to “harvesting and cooking wild produce en mass without first trying a little, only to find out it is way too bitter/sour/fibrous/chewier than expected.”

Image is deceptive, had to enlarge, is it photoshopped? Having decided it's probably not, here's my assumptions: The right log is ash which has fallen due to ash die-back disease, the left possibly beach, surrounding leaf litter is made up of ash, hazel, beach and elm leaves & is probably from a northern European habitat. This view is probably close to a much walked track or pathway & at some point someone has dropped their acrylic & viscose jumper / sweater, another person having found it has placed it over the logs. Weather and elements have played their part in degrading the material in a minor way, but what has happened is the viscose has spawned a healthy woodland algae and lichen on and in the saturated fabric. It is probably only a year or two in age. The fabric however has created a blanket around the trunk and rotting the bark & has harboured an environment spawing the Trametes versicolor bracket fungus that has grown through the fabric. Note hail-ice on top.

Another common mistake people make is “collecting too much when the plant/fruit is abundant but not having a plan for preserving or not calculating the time of processing, so the foraged goods end up going to waste.”

Bonetto’s advice is to learn from your mistakes and be humble. “Foraging is a never-ending and amazing journey of discovery.”

Fungus is cool af. They aren't like plants, having their own separate kingdom. It is currently unknown whether or not they can actually be considered alive, one of the reasons being that it is unknown whether or not they can actually die. The fungal "body" refers to the weird, stringy web-like structure underneath the mushroom - fungi use this structure as a mass communication and control network, communicating with other fungi, growing, and producing "fruits" (mushrooms, stalks, etc). There is a video from a PBS documentary that shows a scientist hooking up two mushroom fungi to a synthesizer, so you can "hear" the signals and communications they send through to each other. Just some fun facts

I saw another documentary that said underground fungal networks also help trees communicate with one another, as well as pass nutrients to one another. It was shown that parent trees used these networks to help their offspring trees thrive much better in the area than non-relative trees.

Especially amphibians like frogs, toads, and salamanders- they breathe through their skin and can absorb toxic substances that are on your hands, like bug spray or soap.

I used to pick up salamanders to and from classes because otherwise they'd be run over by people biking on trails they shouldn't bike on, but no one could stop it. Also, snakes that sun themselves on pavement that would be run over at certain times of day. Also, in summer, reptiles may be ok early mornings, but get cooked if they don't move in time. I don't know about this person, but I never have bug spray on my skin and don't use anything toxic in general, a person isn't necessarily a danger to wildlife, but I understand the concern in the comments.

Shii-take mushrooms are originally from Japan and are known for their flavor and healthy characteristics. A shii-take trunk is an ook tree trunk grafted with shii-take. It is also possible to grow them in your garden in a natural way. A shii-take trunk can be harvested 3-4x per year for 4-5 years. We eat the mushrooms and the mushrooms eat the trunk = edible wood

The shrooms didn't push the pavement up, regardless of what someone says, lol, something else did. The shrooms just decided to take up residence there after. As cute and pretty as this is, though, it usually means something not so good lurks beneath that eruption. Around here, this is how a lot of our sinkholes start, or are the first indication something underneath has broken and problems have only just begun. (it's also just as, probably more so, likely that something is dead right underneath that spot, hence the fungi, they thrive in them)

Specialy if you can save 60$ in the process. They were nude tree branches made of plastic sold for 45€ in a Christmas decoration shop this winter. Still can't wrap my mind around this idea.

Also you have no idea what else is in that sea water, and then gets left in the salt. Chemicals, plastics, fish s**t... I still swim in the ocean, but Im not eating self dried sea salt.

had no idea how much salt was in seawater! Keep in mind though, sea salt has particles of plastic in it from all the junk thrown into the oceans. Don't understand why people do this. Especially with the knowledge we possess today.

Don't make salt from seawater unless you know what you're doing. The correct way is to slowly skim off the surface crystals as the water evaporates and when the water level gets low discard the remainder. The wrong was is to evaporate all or almost all of the water. If you do it the wrong way - instant nausea because of the high levels of MgCl2 and other vomit-producing salts. A little MgCl2 improves the taste, but seawater has way too much.

Again, it's illegal to take this much. Don't be like that, leave something for the animals depending on it. You don't need that much.

You don't even know how many people were on this trip and helped gather these. You also don't know where these were gathered and what the laws are in that place. You actually don't seem to know anything. Get down from that cross, other people need it.

Morels sell for around $30 per pound and can also be dried. I'm guessing this haul will bring in a decent amount of money for this kid and family. It is also incredibly hard work. Good for him.

Why wouldn't he want to eat it? The toxic parts are water soluble so boiling and discarding the water at least twice supposedly makes it edible. People do eat these.
