The first modern coin-operated vending machines were born in London in the early 1880s, dispensing postcards. Thanks to their inventor Percival Everitt, vending machines became a quintessential feature of post offices and railway stations. But some believe that vending machines date back to ancient Greece, when the engineer Hero Of Alexandria made an invention that took coins and dispensed holy water.

The rest is history and today the world is full of vending machines, each one ingenious and crazier than the last. From very on-demand face covering gumball dispensers and a colorful cake vending machine for your late-night sweet tooth cravings to a salmon ATM that dispenses… you guessed it, a piece of salmon, to a biblio-mat that hands out a totally random book for $2, it seems like everything on this planet deserves its very own vending machine.

So get your coins ready, ‘cause Bored Panda compiled this collection of the coolest and most unusual vending machines ready to dispense… you name it!

Lisa Yaszek, a professor of science fiction studies in the school of literature, media, and communication at Georgia Tech, told Bored Panda about the history and cultural significance of vending machines that we have grown so accustomed to, we rarely give them a second thought.

“Vending machines often feel like symbols of modernity—after all, they embody the efficiency, convenience, affordability, and novelty that consumers crave and merchants want to provide,” Lisa said and added that they are actually as old as civilization itself, “popping up in some form or another whenever large groups of people gather in urban spaces.”

My schools all had policies of no OTC meds at all and only the nurse could dispense prescription meds, so you had to go to the nurse every time you needed to take it. If you needed pain reliever like for bad period cramps, you had to get it as a prescription and go to the nurse for it.

“People often credit Hero of Alexandria with inventing the first vending machine (for holy water!) in first-century Roman Egypt, and by the 1600s, English tavern patrons could expect to find portable, coin-operated tobacco dispensers at their local watering hole.”

But automated vending machines like the ones we use today really took off in the 1800s with the rise of industrial cities that were crowded with young people eager to spend some of the money they were earning in factories and department stores, Lisa explained. “While inventors tinkered with everything from machines that sold banned books to machines that offered stamps, the modern vending craze really took off when Englishman Percival Everitt introduced a machine for selling postcards in 1883—and when the Sweetmeat Automatic Delivery Company was founded just 4 years later to install and maintain such machines!”

And they weren’t popular just in England. Lisa said that vending machines were a global phenomenon: “the first American and Japanese vending machines (for gum and tobacco, respectively) were introduced in 1888, the first French machines (for beer, wine, and liquor) appeared in 1890, and the first German vending machine (for chocolate) debuted in 1893.”

Turns out, “Business people loved vending machines because they could sell bulk goods efficiently, without having to train and depend on another human, and consumers enjoyed the ability to purchase everyday necessities and small, trendy luxuries at their convenience and often at a reasonable price point.”

According to Lisa, twentieth-century vending machines sold all the same things as their nineteenth-century predecessors while adding new offerings that included newspapers, “mailing supplies, photographs, and even condoms and other forms of birth control! I think the strangest vending machines were those that sold life insurance in airports from the 1950s to the 1970s—it really takes the glamour out of flying to worry about your possible death while doing so! But maybe that felt glamorous in its own strange way….”

These specialized vending machines that dispense all these particular and sometimes odd items emerged sometime about the turn of the millennium. They started selling “very specific products to niche markets (dog toys for pet owners, marijuana for recreational drug enthusiasts, bait supplies for fishing aficionados, original art and stories for culture buffs).”

The way they interacted with consumers was also way more specialized: “digital vending machines can track purchases across machines and offer consumers targeted goods based on past purchases, and they gamify consumption by tapping into buyers’ social networks.”

There used to be one like this in a shopping-centre in my home town, back when I was a kid, and right after pop-in-cans was invented. The maintenance staff would collect odd cans from the stores that had shelf-space problems, and mix 'em into the slots in this one machine. It came to notice and some problems when it turned out that about one in a hundred was Beer!

I knew someone was going to complain about something idiotic. Honestly, if you have any kind of dietary requirements you can't get random drinks or food from a machine. You should go to a normal machine or get a bottle of water from a regular shop. Life is not fair. Learn to live with it.

Now some kids are going to ruin it for everybody and there will be a assembly about it and there will be no more vending machines. Then everyone will blame the strange kid who put a dead squirrel on a leash and dragged it through the school to first period. He seems like the guy who likes to start fires but it wasn’t actually him it was a bunch of marching band kids bored and waiting for their moms to pick them up after marching practice. It’s always the marching kids.

“And of course, vending machines can be a tool for public health and creativity as well! Vending machines in schools, public bathrooms, and outside pharmacies empower customers to acquire food and medicine when they need it, even if shops are not open, and they enable people to anonymously purchase items that they might be too embarrassed to buy from another human being.”

Lisa also explained that they “allow groups of people who have often been the targets of uncomfortable and unfair economic practices to exert greater authority as consumers. For example, as a woman, I hate being talked down to by men at car dealerships (I know this happens to men too—it’s really a people problem). But recently Carvana opened the first full-service car vending machine here in Atlanta, Georgia, where I live and I am already dreaming about how much fun it will be to go pick out a car without salesmen hovering over my shoulder!”

The professor concluded that it really does feel like the future that vending machines have always promised us.

The community centre across the street from me (I'm in Ottawa Canada) has two of these, one with kids/young adults books and the other with adult books, they also have a few movies, CD's and museum passes. It's part of our library's effort to make the library more accessible as not everyone can get to a branch of the library (we also have a book mobile that's a bus that has set locations it visits every weekday)

I think most of these machines are not to satisfy an emergent need. It's most likely to replace the costly store, labor, licenses and other expenses. Most machines owners don't even pay the electricity they use.

I don't know what all the states are like, but in mine this could only be in a dispensary, so it wouldn't be unattended and you'd have to go through security to get to it. It would make sense to have something like that in a dispensary so people wouldn't have to wait in line for the budtender.

My hubby found all lime bags of skittles and bought both of us a bag. Then we proceeded to have the 30 minute conversation about how green apple messes up the mix and they never should have changed it. Maybe skittles will listen eventually.

Probably used mostly by people with low income or even homeless people, so instant satiation is of the essence. If you put high quality food it might not be affordable... for example a 15kg/33lb of dry dog food (no cereals, real meat, high quality ingredients eatable by human,...) cost me more than 80€/94$

There is one near my mother's place and they are really good, it's made daily by a renowned local caterer with fresh ingredients. It was very useful during curfew while we were renovating an old beach cabin, we make 2 meals with one. It must depend on the cook, like every pizza i guess.

Not only do they have vending machines for everything, they have them everywhere you could possible think/need them. I went to the Philippines to visit my husband when he was stationed there. We went to visit the pineapple growing fields. We were on dirt roads in the middle of nowhere and at a crossroads with another dirt road. And there they were about 3 vending machines with lunch, drinks and desert. Awesome!

I know it's useful and convenient, but I think this is also a bit depressing. Human interaction may be frustrating or annoying, but dealing exclusively with machines can't be good for our mental health.

Imagine, you have an idea for some cool overdrive pedal or whatever, when it's late at night and you just cannot get it outta your head that, if you throw in this filter here, this one there, and then the sound just explodes in your ears, not by sherr volume, but by retaining a few frequencies unmolested, while some others are deeply saturated, ... I was lucky enough to have scavenged quite a few electronic devices to usually be able to find what I'm looking for, but sometimes, I'm less lucky than that. When needing something more special, like adjustable caps or values out of the usual range or so, ...

I don't think I like this idea. People need the human interaction. Yes, that's theoretically true of all vending machines and automatic checkouts, but there is something about going to one's local bakery every day....

    Kerri Russ

4 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

It's just for the baguettes because they are big sellers. You can still get all the rest of the bread inside. Not everything needs human interaction.

It more than likely uses a lift system. The bread machine in our village has one. A tray moves up/down and parks in front of the selected product. The product is forced forward to the tray and the tray moves to the slot for you to retrieve your selection from.

ah good, I can still drink plenty of coffee then, considering I drink it black with no sugar most of the time. (unless I have iced coffee, but then I found a sugar free coffee syrup so yay)

Someone needs to write a C&W song about a trucker who squirts himself with a kind of cologne he doesn't normally use, gets home to find his wife busy in the kitchen, sneaks up behind her, covers her eyes and whispers "Guess who's home?" , only to be mistaken for her boyfriend

These have been common in truck-stop type places at least since the 1960s and probably earlier, that's just when I first noticed them. Normally found right next to another vending machine where you could get such useful items as "French ticklers". Although an optimistic man might expect that if the cologne works he's going to need the condoms!

"premium"... Norwegian farmed salmon is destroying our nature, it's torture for the animals, and it's utterly disgusting.

Unless the salmon are actually communicating with people, you're pretty much talking out your nether regions regarding what they're _actually_ experiencing. They're fish. They have a brain the size of a small pea. No 'culture', 'society', or other indication of intelligence.
