Picture 746 million people living in 50 (+6) countries, speaking 24 (official) languages in a continent that stretches 3,930,000 sq mi. Yep, we’re talking Europe. The precious land of long history, incredible culture, countless destinations, and people, the majority of whom are bilinguals.
But in order to really get the European lifestyle and all the quirks that come with it, you have to step outside the tourist comfort zone. Luckily, there’s a whole subreddit dedicated entirely to all things European, so we can get a better glimpse of the sung “old world.”

A Bridge For Wildlife To Cross The Road In Veluwe, The Netherlands
You don't really see them, when you are on the highway though...
Load More Replies...They serve multiple purposes: connecting patches of nature and allowing animals to safely travel between those patches. Their costs are just a fraction of the entire project of highway construction but it has been proven that in the long term they are very beneficial to wildlife.
Don't forget the purpose of reducing animal-accidents, which kill a lot of people (and animals, obviously, but I bet the "save people" was he better argument to cough up the money 😉)
Load More Replies...We have one of these in Oklahoma (I know, shocking!!!) but it’s so gorgeous!
Cool! And We have tunnels for wildlife in Arizona ( to let those little critters slither across too)
Load More Replies...The UK really needs to jump on this, the motorways are cutting up our land and destroying the natural wildlife corridors. Can also be applied in gardens too; foxes and hedgehogs are no longer able to travel through gardens to hunt for food as we're blocking them all out with concrete posts/footings and huge fences. Create tunnels so they can wander freely!
Quite difficult to add bridges or tunnels to already built motorways, but they are being put into new road developments. The new stretch of the A*56 in Cheshire has a couple of wildlife bridges on it.
Load More Replies...Hate to break it to you but they have these in the US and Canada as well.
Yes, and in France they're nearly everywhere, too
Load More Replies...Australia also does this, we also have rope ladders across smaller roads for koala's etc...just wish that the kangaroo's would use them more, so many killed on our roads that people don’t bat an eye at seeing dead ones next to roads :*(
Maybe they aren't built to the 'roos' specification? The red deer here around had to learn that they bridges are safe, and it took quite a while for them to dare it. But in some places, the bridges were too narrow so they never went over them because it freaked them out. maybe same for kangaroos?
Load More Replies...In Poland, We Are Slowly Getting Rid Of Advertisements And Billboards Madness
A very laudable decision. Cities shouldn't be looking like shopping malls. Getting rid of all those eyesores improves the quality of life. Well done, Poland!
Thank you, but this process is reeaaally slow.
Load More Replies...Good for you, Poland. I find billboards an eyesore and very trashy. Hope other countries will follow, too.
Some Pandas are finding this too plain. That can be changed a little ( a LITTLE) later on, but this is such a bright up of this building. How was it ok to block all the light from those people's windows? I'm sure they appreciate the light they get now! But to me, compared with the previous picture, it looks so peaceful and does not assault the eyes. Great job Poland.
"...it looks so peaceful and does not assault the eyes." Aaahhh. 😌
Load More Replies...Ah, a breath of fresh air! I like the art and history of some advertisements. Pompeii had some cool ones, and there are a couple lingering in my city that are over 100 years old, but too much is definitely overwhelming.
So all those people had their windows blocked up with billboards instead?
How horrible that must have been for the flats/offices views blocked by grotesque consumerism. Good move, Poland.
Medieval House Built In 1509 In Argentan, Orne, France
I'm 99% certain the woman in the window hasn't lived there continuously since 1509, but there's still that 1% of uncertainty...
NOT A MEDIEVAL HOUSE it was built in 1955, as houses on this part of the street had been entirely destroyed in 1944, during WW2. The previous owner who lived there (Roland Chauvin, 1922-2016), a beloved saddle maker, he decorated the house with some horse gear, a reflection of his profession. Around 1960-70, he put the wheel in the front of the house which caught some attention, and someone made postcards with image of his house.
There are first names written in the decoration, of his parents, André and Louise as well as his own and his wife Rolande, which maybe is the lady in the window.
This photo was taken in 2013. (reddit) j4tnrsJ-61...3-jpeg.jpg
Thank you for the follow up details and correct information. Now I want to see it even more!
Load More Replies...1509 is NOT medieval. In southern France was Modern Era :-D
Medieval is generally considered to be 13th to 15th century, so you're right by 9 years. You're also pedantic.

Today 20 Years Ago At The Strike Of Midnight, The Mayor Of Amsterdam Married 4 Gay Couples As The Netherlands Became The First Country In The World To Legalise Same-Sex Marriage
Congrats! I wonder how long some of those couples had been together before they were finally able to marry. Let the rights that have been granted, never be taken away.
The two gentlemen to the brides' left look like it might have been a fairly long time.
Load More Replies...In the tv broadcast not the mayor, but another 'high up" also said the word "gay marriage" can be tossed in the bin. It's fun for magazine headlines and articles, but it's a completely wrong word (because a marriage is a marriage and since we don't use "straight marriage" we also shouldn't use "gay marriage"
Denmark didn't legalise same sex marriages until 2012. You mean civil partnerships, which is not the same thing
Load More Replies...No, you mean civil partnerships, not actual marriages like heterosexual couples could have. Denkmark didn't legalise same sex marriages until 2012
Load More Replies...Legalized marriage was in 2012 for Denmark, they had equal partnering before that which isn't the same.

One has to be creative on every possible way when faces oppression. And having sense of humor doesn't hurt either.
Even better, repression is much more touchy to enforce if you ridicule the government instead of openly fighting against it. Police is pretty pissed off if they have to arrest people over a case of "drying underwear outside". In Serbia, when activists wanted to get rid of Milosevic, they dropped hundreds of balloons in the streets. Policemen had to run after them, trying to catch all the balloons, gathering them in their arms like little kids in a fair. Everyone was laughing at them. Nobody was afraid anymore.
Load More Replies...hope all those people are ok, i read about lady who was arrested for wearing red pants and white shirt
yeah, my thought, too. This might get you arrested, beaten and/or kept in prison 🙁

She (Sanna Marin) Is The New 34 Years Old Prime Minister Of Finland
More countries need leaders of a similar age as the decisions these leaders make are one they actually have to live with for more than half of their lives so they are more likely to tread carefully...
Lets hope this is starting a trend. We've got two young female leaders now, let's have more please. The old males did not make a good job recently.
Load More Replies...Get rid of the male parasites still hogging positions of power and don't have 1/10 of the brains bright, energetic young women like her have.
This is great! A woman. A young woman. We need to start handing things over to a younger generation. Ideas to build a realistic future, not have leaders who want to maintain the past. We need new ideas thrown in there. I believe this and I'm a Boomer!
Something that needs to be talked about more. Is the fact that we see old people as declining in mental health not physically capable and yet they run our country. It's insane and things need to change. People of all ages can offer up wisdom and guidance. America sure does need a lot of that.
I just can't wrap my head around the fact that almost everyone in positions of power in this country are elderly. I have nothing against older people. I just know that people of all ages can offer up wisdom and guidance. Yet it's all old folks making decisions. When it is a fact that their mental health and physical capabilities are declining. The whole system is messed up and needs new people. Even regular American citizens should be able to sit at the table and make decisions. It affects us directly so we should be allowed to be involved in that process. But we're not and that's what's really scary about it all.
Load More Replies...Sorry to burst your bubble but the prime minister of Austria is half a year younger than Sanna Marin and has been prime minister since 2017.
Load More Replies...I wish all "democratic" countries would choose young candidates. Most of the worlds' problems prove that old people aren't handling the changes quickly or effectively. Old politicians disregarded the younger generations by postponing too many necessary policies. Lower the age for candidates, and force these old farts out of office. It's not our world anymore.

Or at least get less (or no) money from the EU until they at least try to be more democratic (stop trying to control the press and judiciary) and more respectful of human rights, especially the rights of minorities and of women. Much of it is sadly ending up being used for corruption and nepotism anyway. There really should be better and more strict controls for EU money (that goes for all countries)

I love the models idea and I am not aware of anything like this in UK, but Sainsbury's, one of our top 5 supermarkets, has braille sinage. I have also come across braille on some foods but I cannot recall which manufacturers are doing this. I've seen braille signs in lifts(elevators) and other public places too. It isn't widespread but it is a start.

The Sentiment In Scotland Is One I Fully Agree With
Totally agree and I'm in the South of England. Never voted for the prat and didn't want Brexit.
Live in North America. While it was being decided, I looked at the pros and cons of Brexit. Was sad you guys left The Union. I have no opinion about Boris. Dunno what he's done and yes, it's hard when you only have 2 choices. Bad and worse. And yes, I'm all for God (and us making the effort ) to save the bees.
Brexit was treason and the instigators should be dealt with accordingly.

Tesco In Slovakia Opened With Empty Shelves. They Wanted To Show Their Customers How It Would Look Like If All Bees And Butterflies Would Become Extinct
I'm from Slovakia. Despite all issues they did one more thing, some grass fields near apartment houses which are usually kept with very short grass, they started mowing into the patterns, chessboard or geometrical patterns in order to actually keep 60%+ flowers untouched but still allowing people to have picnic on or walk in cut pieces. This may seem insignificant however that was big step and it had a lot of rejection as well from locals but also a lot of people supported it and appreciate it. That together with this Tesco display was for me huge step for my little country and I hope it will catch up eventually. We have space to give to bees and other insects. Just convince people it is needed and it's best for everyone.
I sure do hope that this catches up, not only in your country but everywhere else. Let's keep the positive vibes, who knows? It might really catch on 😉
Load More Replies...I am all for saving bees - I have a bee hive in my backyard - but we have to be a little bit careful. Urban/suburban beekeeping has become very popular, and while there are threats to honeybees, we risk developing a monoculture. There are hundreds of different species of pollinating bees, most of them "solitary" bees, that don't live in hives. Honeybees live in multitudes, and can be quite aggressive toward other species. Too many honeybees in one area results in fewer other species in that area, resulting in less diversity. Not all bees pollinate all plants - we need them all.
Meanwhile...Tesco in the UK doesn't pay farmers a decent price for milk and other produce.
Pandas, you can help save the pollinators. Replace sunny grassy areas with clover, which you can practically mow to the ground and it'll pop back up again. Replace shady grassy areas with moss, which provides shelter and food for a myriad of small, beneficial insects. Plant flowers to attract butterflies and hummingbirds. I just got through an entire summer in my yard without a single mosquito bite and without a single tick.
Brilliant idea about the shelves. People don't tend to think about things like that until they are presented with the consequences to themselves. The parks and grasses outside these apartments is great too. Why would anyone not want to have a nice little stroll amongst wildflowers and picnic surrounded by them. I so miss all the wildflowers that were so prevalent when I was a kid. If we wanted to take a shortcut to school it involved walking through a large field full of Queen Ann's Lace, some up to our waist. Only see them on roadsides now. There was an entire hill filled with light purple clover and you could pull apart the flower and suck on the tiny ends and get a tiny amount of nectar out that tasted wonderful. Of course entirely safe because of no pesticides. Also wild mint all over too. Cant remember the last time I saw a buttercup. All gone and clover is considered a weed. Happy to have it so our bunnies have something to eat. We desperately need to save the bees.
We also need to protect not only honeybees, but wild bees as well. Many varieties of wild bees are better pollinators for specific crops (apples for instance). If we lose the wild bees, pollination levels will drop. DW Planet A has an excellent video on Youtube for this.

In 2018, Annamaria Horvathova, A Roma Girl From Slovakia Won A Running Race Wearing Just Ballerinas On Her Feet. Last Week, She Became A 1500m Champion Of Slovakia In Her Age Group
Shame on anyone blaming her for being 16 and pregnant. I don't know what sex-ed is like in Slovakia or how expensive condoms are, but I'm betting a child who was winning races in ballet flats doesn't have obscene amounts of money or social privilege. Cut the teen some slack.
It's not about money, it's about culture. Roma tend to marry very early and give birth to children when they are in fact themselves still children. And usually to relatives, since the whole gene pool is quite slim. We judge this behavior in our own Western culture to grow beyond that point. They seek safety in continuing their ways. That's fine, but it's not admirable. And most certainly not something to find excuses for. She's fine with it and cares more for her family and their ways than she does for escaping that life.
Load More Replies...I think it was more likely that she wore ballet shoes, rather than people who perform ballet!
no she ran in a pair of shoes she had at home. she didnt have any trainers. so after she won the race ppl bought her trainers to motivate her. but then she fell to the trap of the community customs and got pregnant.then there was a backlash on social media something like what is the point in buying them things they are still all the same ( some racist bullshit). these communities live in generational poverty. we have programs to help them but it is a long term problem and a vicious circle. i like the project called omama where they are trying to educate young mothers in how to take care and educate their toddlers so that they are not behind the children from majority
Load More Replies...Roms have experienced the vicious cycle of generational poverty for centuries, so it's not a stretch to image her difficulties in the often racist school system or not being able to afford pregnancy preventatives. I'm relieved it was a previous boyfriend and not her coach.
my family had no money and I remember doing long jump and running races in shoes that were so cheap they had no inner soles but hard plastic like grids where the soles should have been. Ran races without complaints like kids do but was a bit sad on a small level seeing what other kids had. You go girl.
Closest she could get to running barefoot. When I was young, I much preferred to be barefoot, but you need to develop good calluses if you want to run that way.
I am a Romani woman and I can tell you one thing, being pregnant at 16 does not only happen when you are Roma. Please be more open minded, as getting pregnant or married can happen to anyone and it does not matter on your culture or background. This depends on your upbringing and sometimes I guess it can just happen. I am 25 travelling the world with good education and my own business with no children. Just thought I share my views as I see Roma people are still being stereotyped.

Wasn't it the Germans who came up with the idea of the Christmas tree and decorating it.
As far as I know from my classes, the Christmas tree was introduced in the German Empire around 1870-something by the german emperor Wilhelm I. He celebrated christmas with a tree, decorated with all kinds of stuff and sending some to soldiers (it was Thirty Years' War if I remember correctly). I guess he is (one of) the reasons the christmas tree became so damn famous. He wasnt the first to decorate stuff for celebration, the first mentioning was in 1660, but I dont remember who (Liselotte something). The origin is more likely pegan. I did study that topic a little but it's in no way my specialty. Yet, I hope that its somehow new information or something.

According to Pew Center, views of the economy play a large role in how people generally view the European Union. According to their study, those who think their country’s economic situation is good are more likely to have a favorable opinion of the EU in most countries surveyed.
“In Sweden, for example, 81% of those who think the Swedish economy is in good shape also have a positive view of the EU; just 42% of those who think the economy is functioning poorly share that sentiment,” the study stated.

It's also perfect cause it affects poor and rich equally!!! Most of the times the rich don't care about the fine so they don't care about speeding too!
Load More Replies...and do they stop willingly? or are they fined in case they drive away before they are supposed to wait?
This isn't a bad idea. Some people never learn...or don't mind about paying the fee every time.
Psychologists say that rewarding for good behavior is better than punishing for bad behavior. Why don't we start giving people money for every month they didn't get a ticket?
While I do get where you‘re coming from, this is basic manners and common sense, not to mention the law. By the same reasoning, you could give out money to those who don’t shoplift etc. :/ Also, from my experience, most speeders don’t care about money. They just want to get there fast, anything else is irrelevant to them.
Load More Replies...This is the best idea because it forces drivers to be aware immediately. Motorists are like dogs. You need to correct their behavior in the moment.

It still strikes me as odd that the same charger/adapter can't be used for both iPhone and Android.
Remember back in the day when every different model of the same manufacturer cane with a charger that would only work with maybe three different phones? When you couldn't even charge your phone at your friend's house because he had a Motorola and you had a Nokia? The EU then demanded a standard to br used by manufacturers wishing to sell in the EU. Back then it was Mini USB, but it was a huge leap forward. Remember that. Without rules, manufacturers will exploit the freedom and won't provide you with the best, but with the most money-generating charger.
Most cell phone prices are due to the greed of the provider. Go outside your provider and you'll find it for a much less. I bought my Galaxy Note 9 for $260. US Cellular wanted $1000. And going outside the provider I was able to get an unlocked phone which means I can remove most of that preloaded crap no one uses. At least, no one I've ever met. Now if someone could only figure out a way to remove the illegal tracking software the government had installed on every cell phone last year.

The Netherlands - 1966
There are a few reasons for why we're skilled at cycling: 1) Except for some sandhills/moraines (remnants of the ice age) and some hills in the extreme south, the country is completely flat. 2) There is a completely separate infrastructure for cyclists. Most of the time, cycling paths are physically separate from the road, and they have their own traffic lights. Infrastructure design in the Netherlands is way ahead of most other countries in the world, and it avoids putting different kinds of traffic (pedestrians, bicycles and cars) in the same place. 3) We learn traffic rules in school, and get to do an exam with a certificate. (At least, in my time. We also got swimming lessons, a good idea in a country with a lot of waterways.)
Load More Replies...This is still very common here. Although we now have all sort of devices you can click onto your bike. My mom used to cycle, me standing in the back, my brother in the front, my friend on the bar in de middle. Also: helmets are considered ridiculous.

This reminds me of a powerful song called, "And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" about Australian soldiers in WWI. I'm pretty sure that dude was without legs from birth, though, which feels like it would make a difference in terms of being comfortable living his life at floor-level. Also, it seems like, if you have a non-improvised mobility aid, a ceremonial event like in the picture might be the occasion to use it.

What a terrible, terrible day that was. The only positive? It completely changed the thinking of a very large section of all communities who realised that the peace process had become truly vital and urgent.
It's really sad that sometimes, it takes something devastating for something good to happen. I'm happy for the father and child to have survived, but really sad for the photographer.

Yesterday Hungarys Ruling Party Passed The ‘Slave Law’ Which Enables Companies To Make Their Workers Work Extra 400 Hours. The Overtime Ony Has To Be Paid After Three Years. Protesters Confronted The Authorities In The Whole City, The Police Used Gas And Pepper Spray Several Times
Hungary and Poland are really going crazy. I wish that the EU woudl step up and stop this madness.
Human rights are ignored and the EU does nothing. You're right this is madness.
Load More Replies...This not not exatly how it is.... the title is very deceptive, an already existing method received legal frames. It does not mean that companies can make people work endless working hours and not paying them extra because of overtime. There are legal rights, 8 hour normal work hour/day for your agreed payment, extra work on workdays x1,5 of your normal payment , on weekends x2. If you are working in an 8 hour work schedule, than this overtime have to be paid at the end of the month. - this is the most commont version. If you are working in unequal work schedule, when your overtime can be defined after you finished this work, the company has the right the pay this overtime in a Maximum of 3 years (paid yearly), of course depending on the length of the work and on the mutual agreement. The overtime is maximized in 400 hours yearly, but this is also a bit more complicated because depends on the collective agreement and the agreement between the company and the employee too.
sorry for my English, I hope this is understandable :) Anyway I just wanted to add this because I was reading some of the comments and every coin is two sided, it depends on what you hear and read in the news. We did not became slaves either :) or at least I think it depends on where you work.. and also to add, I am open to read about the regulations in other countries too, maybe there are better ones, from which we can learn.
Load More Replies...Police protect profits not people. True in at least 9 out of every 10 countries.
... that's outragously wrong! 50 work days overtime, and they can wait 3 years to pay you? If this isn't some highly resrticted emergency to safe companies on the edge of bankruptcy, it's a dystopian nightmare coming true. People should hold back their work's result for three years, and get compenasation if they have to rent storage for it or arrange transportation, of, say, some big machinery if they work as a welder ... you don't pay them, neither should you receive their work's results or make any profit of it.
That was in 2019 and guess what, they did accept the law and we have no slaves in 2021. Literally nothing happened, it was just a campaign from the opposition to make people scared and to make hungary and the prime minister look bad.
Warsaw Is Reclaiming Space From Cars
The Netherlands has been doing that since the 1970's, but they simply closed streets for cars. The "Stop murdering our children" protests were picked up by politicians and resulted in policies aimed at giving the cities back to the people.

I guess if the Thatcher-discount is dicontinued, and every other special treatment above just being a member, you might be accepted back in in a few years - and should work for this. I mean this seriously and noninsulting - those thinking that UK in EU is to be prefered should found a party with exactly that goal. The countries that ran the first wave of industrialization are nowadays those where people have to most and most secure rights, best and most useful welfare institutions, widespread wealth and so on - and, still, have the most buying power in the world and thereby can make improvements on these issues mandatory to trade with them, and thereby spread the ideas and their outcome of ... widespread wealth, environment and the nondestruction thereof, animal welfare, childcare, healthcare ... all the things that mark a civilized country. Greed will thrive on its own, and, sadly, technology is easier transfered than rights are - as long as we accept it. Sad and stupid: We do.

Notre Dame Is On Fire
I'm in the UK and was stunned at this. It was absolutely gut wrenching to see such an iconic building on fire.
I stayed up watching Notre Dame burn on the news. Its a miracle its still standing and that they managed to save the organ and rose windows. I went to bed in tears thinking that we had lost a massive piece of history but due to the brave firefighters Notre Dame still stands! Bravo to those brave men and women!
It broke my heart to see, but I know it can be rebuilt. The (quite famous but maybe not Notre Dame level famous) York Minster once set on fire, back in the 80's (so before I was born, but I was actually quite upset to see the Notre Dame go up in flames, so others taught me of this previous event) and was restored https://www.york.ac.uk/media/news-and-events/publiclectures/19-20/Mendus%20banner%20(1).jpg it will take time to rebuild, just like it took time to rebuild York Minster, (4 years) but Notre Dame will be just as beautiful again soon. The idea is that it will be restored in time for the 2024 Paris Olympics. I really hope so. The Notre Dame is beautiful and iconic.
Something All Europeans Have In Common
No, we don't. The roads in Germany and the Netherlands are well maintained. That's why there's always congestions. Because of the roadwork in progress.
Even in Southern European countries this isn´t the case anymore. For instance, Portugal´s roads around 20/30 years ago used to be like this in some places but now they´re mostly in good conditions. ..... Just to add some statistics to this: https://www.statista.com/chart/15821/who-has-the-best-roads/
