In 1969, When Black Americans Were Still Prevented From Swimming Alongside Whites, Mr. Rogers Decided To Invite Officer Clemmons To Join Him And Cool His Feet In A Pool
Racists aren't born. They are made. Mr. Rogers did much to combat that ignorance.
Officer Clemons was also gay, which Fred Rogers did not shy away from in 1969. He dried his feet for him❤️
Fred Rogers accepted him being gay personally, but would not let him be gay in the show due to the scandal it would cause. He even told him to stop wearing the earring he had started to wear. Mr. Rogers also suggested he get married, so he did, but it didn't last. As more and more gay men came out, Mr. Rogers changed his attitude, and advised Mr. Clemmons to find a stable relationship. And Mr. Rogers didn't dry his feet for him- he gave him his towel to dry with, then used the same towel to dry his own feet, which broke another colour barrier. He was a very gentle man, and Tom Hanks did a wonderful job in portraying him- if you've never seen "Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood", I would highly recommend it.

How the f*** do you hang a 17-year-old girl and think to yourself, “I am on the right side, and history will remember me well.”
They also executed a 14-years-old that did nothing but speak his mind: Helmut Hübener. War is atrocious and the violence that comes with it is repelling. Still, the human race seems to struggle to understand it.

One Of The Earliest Photos Showing A Native American With A Wolf - Unlike The Myths Created About Wolves By Settlers, Indians Maintained A Close And Respectful Relationship With Wolves

Load More Replies...It may be a dog in this photo, but I spent a few summers on the rez visiting my babysitter’s parents and rest of her family. Her parents became my grandparents. The uncle of the kids up the road actually did have a wolf. Amazing to be so close to such a majestic animal. Very friendly and sweet.
That's not a wolf. That a domesticated dog. Humans crossed the Bering Straits with dogs, and dogs have been part of Indigenous American culture from the beginning.
To be fair, European wolves and American wolves behave very differently.
This may well explain why the European settlers who encountered wolves in the Americas feared them so much, they were used to a different breed of wolf with a very different temperament.

Many of us immediately feel the urge to do a few Google searches, quickly click on hyperlinks, and dive headfirst into the world of knowledge, all to learn more about these past eras, long-gone events, and people who created something out of them.
It’s amazing how old photos can lead to hours of research about something you might not even have known existed before. By exploring historical events through old photographs, you have a chance to interpret and enhance your perception of the world in a visual way. You’re suddenly presented with new information about how individuals lived back then and how their actions molded our society.

I'm curious to know.....Is the store still standing and what does it look like today?
The store is no longer there, unfortunately. I could only find a pic from 2009 and it had a metal roll down/warehouse door and the checkered tile is gone. I did do a Google Street View from last year and it looks worse than it did in 2009. The space looks a little worn down and there is a store called Sarah Ventures Inc, but no sign. The pillar (?) on the right that separates this store from the next is still there. It does look like they are doing a lot of work on this block, with scaffolding on half of the block. Let's hope Sarah Ventures can update the storefront to its former glory! Edit: If you would like to look on street view, the address is 653 Malcolm X Blvd, New York

“From a photograph too, we can see body languages and poses within a group of people or the way a scene is laid out, and this is much more than we could ascertain from reading a book,” Jo added. “Photographs help make history seem more real. They’re like a viewfinder into the past!”
And we can’t help but agree. Of course, oral traditions, artifact collection, and volumes of manuscripts and documents are essential sources of information for historical periods. But there’s something about old photographs that enhances our understanding of history. With each and every closing of the camera shutter, a moment is recorded and frozen in the past, and uncovering these gems makes them seem even more real.
Bobbi Gibb, First Woman To Run The Boston Marathon In 1966, She Ran Without A Number Because Women Were Not Allowed Into The Race
I'd love to know the "reasoning" behind not allowing women to race. Actually, I'd love to know how men thought they had a right to deny such a thing in the first place.

With a shidloat of luck, I still could have a photograph of her looking so, even in a similar pose ... but I doubt I'll find it anytime soon, after reviewing my basement that still has unopened boxes from my Dad, stored there since 1985, and about a layer of 1+ meter of debris, treasures and dead spiders, ... I just doubt I still have it, but would never have thrown it away (she moved away some time then, not long after, and I had a crush on her for like forever ... she knew all the time, told me when we met one of the last times ... never was THAT redfaced before or after...).

“We have so much we can learn from the visual evidence that we have, whether that’s a portrait of a person or a snapshot captured of a group or scene,” the blogger pointed out that history is an extremely varied topic. Jo added that visual media helps make the past seem more accessible and that we can see old photos like we see historical artifacts. “They add interest and give us context.”
According to Jo, it’s one thing to read about your great-great-grandfather on a page, but seeing a photograph of him and looking into his eyes is completely different. She believes that “photos of people or scenes evoke a much stronger emotional reaction, and it’s great that they can be used alongside written sources for context. Not everyone wants to learn just by reading, and using different visual sources can help keep our interest and curiosity up and make the topic a lot more engaging.”

The actual heat source was mechanical friction inside the cylinder. The concept was that any mechanical power could be used to generate heat (waterwheel, windmill, compressed air, anything) as opposed to just burning fuel.

A Jewish Hanukkah Menorah Defies The Nazi Swastika, 1931
On Hanukkah 1932, just one month before Hitler came to power, Rachel Posner, wife of Rabbi Dr. Akiva Posner, took this photo of the family Hanukkah menorah from the window ledge of the family home looking out on to the building across the road decorated with Nazi flags.
On the back of the photograph, Rachel Posner wrote in German (translated here): Chanukah 5692 (1932)
"Death to Judah"
So the flag says
"Judah will live forever"
So the light answers. -.
The family still has the Menorah, it is put on display every year at the Yad V'Shem Holocaust Memorial center in Israel.
The Hebrew calendar counts years differently than the Christian one. Year 1932 (Christian) is year 5692 (Hebrew).

Bride Leaving Her Recently Bombed Home To Get Married, London, Nov 4, 1940
So, I looked it up, since, as an American, I primarily was taught that America ended the war in 1945. This woman was incredibly brave, and must have married during a brief lull in bombing. The Blitzkreig started on September 7th, 1940, with the Nazis bombed London for 57 days in a row. That means on November 3rd, it was still happening. The bombing continued until May, 1941. Yes, I looked it up because I was curious.

Load More Replies...As Anna Pegler-Gordon, an associate professor at the University of Michigan, explained in a piece called Seeing Images in History, we rarely spend time exploring pictures that illustrate history. Most of the time, we focus on the written content “because of the way that images are presented in many historical texts and also because of the way that historians are trained to view images—as illustrations of written history rather than sources of history themselves.”
But this seems to be changing, as Pegler-Gordon mentioned evidence of a “visual turn” in learning and teaching the subject in the last few years. It looks like more academics and historians now give more attention to visual images.
By using history pictures to teach, the professor noticed that students often see media as more accessible than written records. “Students themselves mention that images make the past seem more accessible, giving concrete shape to a world that sometimes seems intangible,” she added.

It was taken on October 9th 1940, after a night time bombing in London by Fred Morley, a photographer who was pissed with his photos being censored by the Ministry of War. Bombardment photos were routinely censored to avoid damaging people's morale and to avoid giving feedback to the Germans about the real damages, so Morley tried to bypass the censorship by staging an uplifting photo that could be approved while still doing some photo reporting. The "milkman" is actually Morley's assistant. The bottles and outfit were borrowed from an actual milkman. The firemen were recruited from nearby brigades at work mitigating damages. The trick worked, and the image was published on newspapers and went on to become iconic.

They appreciate the immediacy of the image, which often conveys information more quickly than a primary document written in an unfamiliar, or even a foreign, language.” Another benefit is that this immediacy leads to a shared experience of viewing a picture together that can contribute to a lively group discussion.
Moreover, students are often advanced readers of graphic media, and with proper guidance and support from their teachers, they can truly enjoy the process of looking at and analyzing historical visual representations.

It looks like they're 2 moves in (one each) for an "English Opening", though the player for white has touched her queen (by the rules means you much play that piece). It's unorthodox to bring your queen out this early into such an opening. One could surmise that they're knowledgeable players, but are not taking this game very seriously so that it's quicker and less boring.
I like this because showgirls were probably thought of as not overly intelligent, but chess isn't for dummies.
“However, visual images are also inaccessible for the same reasons that they are accessible. The apparent legibility of the image hides its historical construction, the ways in which the image was made, distributed, and read at the time it was produced and since.” Pegler-Gordon added that to become better at reading images, we must become informed about the history and the theory of images.
"Easter Eggs For Hitler" Two African American Gi's Pose At Easter Time With Personalised Infantry Shells. Ww2, 1940s
Time Magazine and other periodicals had articles of how German POWs were in certain POW camps and towns here in the U.S. treated better than our own U.S. Black soldiers during WW2. It's a history we seem to avoid speaking about along with our interning U.S. citizens during that same time period. And to Jacob Nunez's response, you are partially correct to the congrats but that never was the norm. It sometimes takes Hollywood and magazines to make people aware of the contributions of these soldiers, sailors and airmen during WW2 (usually decades afterwards). Great photo and great comments.
Despite how they were treated in their homeland, the 969th Field Artillery Battalion, as did the Tuskegee Airmen in the sky, laid to rest ANY doubts that they were in any way inferior to their white counterparts and acquired a reputation as outstandingly accurate and efficient artillerymen. In one instance, they were called on to fire upon 3 tiger tanks assaulting American lines- at distance, of the four rounds fired, three were direct hits.
"Because the military didn’t think African Americans were fit for combat or leadership positions, they were mostly relegated to labor and service units. Working as cooks and mechanics, building roads and ditches, and unloading supplies from trucks and airplanes were common tasks for Black soldiers. And for the few who did make officer rank, they could only lead other Black men." https://www.history.com/news/black-soldiers-world-war-ii-discrimination
David Isom, 19, Broke The Color Line In A Segregated Pool In Florida On June 8, 1958, Which Resulted In Officials Closing The Facility
This is really brave - less than a decade after the Anacostia Pool Riot
There used to be public pools all over the American South that were closed because of desegregation. Desegregation also led to the establishment of hundreds of private schools so white families could remain segregated. There is a deep, shameful past to public space planning in the South that needs to be aired and rectified. And don't think it didn't happen up north. There's a reason Chicago is so segregated and Wisconsin is the most economically segregated state in the country.
Los Angeles, as well. Contemporary urban planning is founded on segregation. Thanks, Robert Moses, you unmitigated piece of s**t.

My mom remembered going to 12th St beach in Chicago as a kid in the 1930s and there was something akin to a snow fence that divided the beach into ’Colored’ and ‘White Only’ and ran into the water to divide the lake, too. I guess it was okay that the water flowed from both sides - but heaven forbid a black foot stepped on the white side sand! (although…doesn’t sand blow and drift?) 🤔

Computing is one of the rare industries where the number of women dwindled instead of steadily increasing, as it was not seen as masculine and concidered unimportant, but when it boomed and suddenly became important it was suddenly unfeminine, women "weren't smart or dedicated enough" and men pushed them out of the field.
I watched it happen in the early nineties. It was bonkers. Computers and video games were absolutely genderless - as it should be - and nobody really thought about it. Hell, early 80s toys didn't really have pink variations (well okay there were barbies and stuff but legos and robot building sets and everything else did not). No idea what happened or why, but it sucked.

I hope they did not get c**p for being "mixed-race" couples. There is one race, the human race.
It was 1959 so, unfortunately, I think they got more than their fair share of harassment.

Taken by Charles "Teenie" Harris (https://www.blackpast.org/african-american-history/harris-charles-h-teenie-1908-1998/), one of the most prolific photographers of African American life. He spent his entire career in and around Pittsburgh. What an astounding collection of images he left behind: https://historicpittsburgh.org/collection/teenie-harris-photographs
This is why all people of the US should not be lumped together as one. The deep south was, and is, nothing like the north in most cases.
Perhaps, but lets not forget that some of the worst racial riots we have endured in this country including The Chicago Race Riots, The Newark Riots, Springfield Race riots and The Harlem Riots...were ALL in the North, not the South. The Tulsa Riots were Midwest. The state of Oregon on the west coast made it completely ILLEGAL for any black person to move there...for decades. Even in Cali...the LAPD has become synonymous with black-focused police brutality. Racism is not unique to America, but was (and is!) pervasive in ALL parts. But I wholly agree Americans should not be lumped together at all....just because we are citizens of the same country does not mean we ARE the same.

If that is the photographer, who is taking the picture? The banana?
Load More Replies...Because all of the evidence that true giants existed is now hidden within the basements of museums. If you look at newspapers from the 60's and earlier, you will find many different discoveries, some including pictures. There is a Russian book that has many of those discoveries in a compilation. There's humerus bones that measure taller than an average man, almost total skeletons, and more. It would be ignorant to say that we are the only humanoids. There's been plenty before us. Were some of the discoveries faked? Of course! People are always looking for a quick buck and 15 minutes of fame. Not everything is fake, though. There's so much about this world that we don't know, that has been hidden, or we have forgotten.

What is the Oldest Historical Photo?
The oldest photograph takes us back to a time around 1826 or 1827. A French inventor named Joseph Nicéphore Niépce captured an image titled “View from the Window at Le Gras” at his country estate in Saint-Loup-de-Varennes, France. This photo required an exposure time of about eight hours.
It stands as a legendary moment in the history of humanity, marking the first successful attempt to permanently capture a scene from nature. This image paved the way for modern photography and also serves as a reminder of the lengths to which pioneers went to capture a moment in time.
Shooting The Original MGM Logo, 1928
This lion was born in Dublin Zoo...... https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leo_the_Lion_(MGM)
Sound recordist: "Can you just say a few words for level, please" Lion: "Errr. Mary had a little lamb. But I ate it. Now f**k off."
He wouldn't pounce, he was raised by humans from cubhood and fully trained specifically for showbiz.

That’s A Genuinely Happy Looking Family, USA, 1959
Haha, I thought I was probably the only one to notice it, because we're obsessed with saving water where I live!
Load More Replies...For some reason I expect to find something sinister lurking in the background. That window . . .
See how suspicious we have become. We can't believe that there are happy and content families. We somehow think that they no longer exist. Families eat dinner at different times, moms don't stay home, they go to work, kids stay in their rooms watching their TVs and they are on their computers or smartphones. You couldn't accept the happy family picture as being real. You looked for something in the picture to cause it to be disingenuous.

Marina Ginestà became famous due to the photo taken by Juan Guzmán on the rooftop of Hotel Colón, Barcelona during the July 1936 military uprising in Barcelona. As she was a reporter, it was the only time Ginestà was carrying a gun. The rifle she is carrying is M1916 Spanish Mauser, manufactured at the famous Oviedo factory in Spain for the Spanish Army.

What is the Most-Seen Picture of All Time?
The title of the most-seen picture of all time might surprise you—it’s not a work of art, a historical event, or even a celebrity snapshot but rather an image of a green hill and blue sky dotted with clouds.
“Bliss,” photographed by National Geographic photographer Charles O’Rear in 1996, gained its fame as the default desktop background for Microsoft’s Windows XP operating system. This iconic image has ended up on the screens of computers around the world, becoming an inadvertent yet pervasive piece of visual culture. It’s estimated that billions of people have seen the historical photo.
Learning To Ride A Bicycle, 1961
😆😆 my youngest daughter sticks her tongue out when she's concentrating lol
Am I the only one who thinks that man's nose and mustache are attached to his glasses?
I learnt to ride using a similar bicycle. Because of the height of the bike, first step of learning I placed the right foot under the top tube. That picture would be the next step.
The photo taken in the '60's with the cameras available make this photo an amazing historical record of the Rite of Passage when a youth learns to ride a bike with parent running alongside trying to push them through into self-guided pedaling and balance. The expressions are frozen on their face where we know in real time their faces and bodies moved through this freeze frame in a second. The photo brings the viewer into the action, first with the bicycle looking as if it and the girl will tumble into the parent(assumption). The parent is fully in, wanting nothing more in that moment, on that hour, to see their child be a success. This shot is a metaphor for parent - child relationships. Determination is expressed on the girl. Pride and hope is expressed on her Pop. It's a master piece. Perhaps a fun, off handed shot to the other parent wanting to record the moment her daughter learns to ride a bike; however, this rite of passage is ubiquitous throughout humanity. Love it.
An Ojibwe Native American Spearfishing, Minnesota, 1908
I love photography because you get to see these little captured moments in time. I'm watching a person from 1908, it's incredible to just feel so close to something that happened over a century ago
