An old building often has a long story, full of secrets that its former residents have left behind. That's one of the reasons why some folks prefer living in the old town—it has an aura. And, every now and then, they resurface.

We at Bored Panda put together a list of pictures people took during their home renovations when they suddenly discovered unexpected treasures. Turns out, things like a locked safe and a 100-year-old Monopoly set can be hiding right between your walls.

All you need to find them is a sledgehammer.

Depending on their age and type of plant, many could become part of an heirloom seed bank.

You've got to wonder too if it's so old there may be seeds for species that are now endangered or threatened.

Probably stuff they'd sell in bulk, heirloom.. maybe? My gma said, as long as you have your main staples, you'll have food(corn, beans, rice). Weed seeds, could be wildflowers, of sorts. A lot of em have edible "weeds", roots and leaves. Definitely something to look into, I'd like one of these lol I'm confused and intrigued, I also couldn't read it without my glasses, good eye.

It’s absolutely beautiful, but I do wonder if it contains scheele’s green, which was an insanely popular green color used in the Victorian era. It was chock full of arsenic.

Got a good point. Maybe that's why it was covered up? Either way I'd get it tested & if it is bad I bet you could find a way to safely preserve it. Maybe resin. Or putting clear tiles over it. I'm sure there's something that can be done.

That vibrant green color that the Victorian era is so known for usually came from arsenic though.... People died from just sitting in their homes from breathing in the arsenic in the air. I'd get it tested before you even touch it

Chances are, we'll be seeing many more cool finds. According to Houzz's annual Houzz & Home study, U.S. home renovation activity and spending have reached the highest rates since 2018.

More than half of homeowners (55%) renovated in 2021, up from 53% in 2020 and 54% in both 2019 and 2018.

Following 15% growth in median renovation spend in 2020, homeowners reported an additional 20% jump in 2021 median spend, which now stands at $18,000.

We certainly see it as beautiful, but any form of design is going to age through a period of time where it just looks dated to those alive at that time. These sorts of things happen during that window of time.

Recent homebuyers, who account for 10% of renovating homeowners, spent nearly double the median ($30,000) in 2021, surpassing the median spend for short-term and long-term homeowners ($19,000 and $15,000, respectively).

Recent homebuyers who had higher-budget projects (the top 10% of spend) invested $175,000, compared with $100,000 for short-term homeowners and $90,000 for long-term homeowners.

Experts say this higher spend potentially can be attributed to the number of projects recent homebuyers undertake at a single time—an average of three to four rooms as well as home systems such as electrical and plumbing.

People are asking who would cover these beautiful features up. Well, not only did people no longer employ a live-in maid to help clean, or clean it for them, this stuff simply went out of style. So people covered it with something more up to date. Hell, people used to cut the beautiful legs off old sofas because low, legless sofas came in style for a minute back in the 1950s. We’re just as guilty. Think about all the beautiful secondhand hardwood furniture people today are giving away or putting on the curb as garbage, that we’re painting over, bedazzling, cutting up, and repurposing as something completely different (like cat beds in old tube TVs that have been gutted). Some time in the future, people will shake their heads—-and maybe their fists too—-at us for that. At least these features were covered, so they could see the light of day once again, instead of removed entirely. We should learn from that.

    Cat Palmer

And we now benefit from features which were covered as they would have faded or been destroyed in left out in the open. I recently visited a historic house where two rooms retained Elizabethan (16th century) murals only because they had been covered with panelling in the 17th century and forgotten about. This is something that has been happening for a long time!

Damn! I collect gold and silver coons for my kids. Price of gold is very high right now if you need the money! Go to a reputable appraiser and insure them if your keeping them! You don't want to lost the value of these if stolen/lost etc I'm not entirely sure you REALLY know how much this lot is worth! Assuming they are solid(not plated. Go to www.Americanmint.com and find what you have. However, if solid gold, the weight of the gold is worth far more then the coins typically. Congrats!

    Amy Stone-Chandler

3 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

Today's ask price per 1 Kilo Gold is: $57,669.78.(if solid) you have over 2.3kilos here so could be 115,339.56 again IF solid gold. Math was never my strong suit, but you get why I mentioned appraisal and insurance. Can't tell from pic but they may just be plated. So could be anywhere from $30-120 each. Sorry I can't make out what portrait is on these to help more accurately.

My ex husband threw away my little red leather book collection that was left to me by my grandma who passed when I was 5 years old because I loved reading them and she knew I loved classic literature. Can you imagine someone being so petty or cruel to throw away something like that and that's all I had of hers because he ruined her collection of bird books that I had. I just cried. I love books.

I know if it's from 1835 they may not have very many examples and even a poor copy could be valuable. I almost hope these people will take like a Harry Potter book and stick it back in the wall for some kid in the future to find.

Find the family and return it, donate it to a local history museum, or have it professionally framed and hang it near where you found it so it becomes part of the history of the house.

This is a transcription of Lee's General Order No. 9, apparently by Brig. Gen. Walter Husted Stevens, Chief Eng., Army of Northern Virginia! A souvenir picked up by a Minnesota man? See the National Park Service Appomattox Court House for a photo of another transcription, done by a different officer, also on Apr. 10. See also Stevens' Wiki entry. (He was paroled on Apr. 10 at Appomattox.)

Yes! One of the reddit commenters transcribed it: Headquarters Army of No. Virginia 10th April 1865 General Order No. 9 After four years of arduous service marked by unsurpassed courage and fortitude the army of Northern Virginia has been compelled to yield to overwhelming numbers and resources. I need not tell the brave survivors of so many hard fought battles, who have remained steadfast to the last, that I have consented to this result from no distrust of theirs. But feeling that valor and devotion could accomplish nothing that would compensate for the loss that would have attended the continuance of the contest. I determined to avoid the useless sacrifice of those whose past service have endeared them to their countrymen. By the terms of the agreement, Officers and men can return to their homes and remain until exchanged. You will take with you the satisfaction that proceeds from the conciousness of duty faithfully performed, and I earnestly pray that a merciful God will

Probably just a decorative piece or souvenir. But you're definitely right. I'd take it somewhere to be looked at before having anything done to restore it. Then depending on the answer I'd either have it done professionally or just clean & shine it up. Before hanging it on my wall.

OMG I have one of those! It's right here on my desk! Same TV design, same picture, same everything, except that the blue and white are swapped around for some reason. It was indeed part of a dollhouse set my sister owned, which I decided to keep for sentimental reasons. I believe our mother has the rest of it stashed away for the nephew to play with when he comes over.

People who are renovating continue to hire professionals at a high rate—nearly 9 in 10 homeowners relied on pros for their remodels or upgrades in 2021.

Recent homebuyers (those who tackled a lot more projects than the ones who'd been in their home a while), were particularly keen to get help (93%) but hiring was widespread among short- and long-term homeowners as well (88% each).

Empty BUT reusable by YOU now. Clean it up and get a new lock on it. Modern burglars aren’t necessarily looking for floor safes, just anything left out that they can grab quickly so they can leave before the alarm system gets the cops to the house.

They do! I have a story. My mom spread my grandmother's ashes in the backyard of my grandma's home after planting one of her favorite trees and building a sitting bench. My mom never told me. Years later, I found a crematorium tag exactly like this in the grass. I freaked out & contacted the place & they told me it was my grandmother 😲

I remember when we used the three digit system and still had party lines. And you could dial 0 for the operator and ask for the a letter and the three digit exchange but you were also listening to other people's conversations and they were listening to yours as well! Talk about lack of privacy. I think that's why I appreciate privacy as much as I do but I'm also open because everyone already knew everything. I didn't care. You just never told secrets.

Could have been too difficult to remove from the basement...maybe it was installed when the house was built and it was deemed too difficult to remove for whoever was living there. I'm guessing they thought it was easier to build around it instead of cutting up and removing.

Whilst these notes stopped being legal tender in 1996, people should still be able to pay them into a UK bank account. If they aren't accepted, then they can be exchanged at the Bank of England counter in London. However, it is also possible to sell the notes, and they are worth more than their face value.

More info from OP on Reddit: "Kind of a tragic story, and this happened a while back. We contacted the son, who owned/sold the house to my grandpa. When we told him, he was elated (it was his father’s Purple Heart), like in tears on the phone. But he never showed up to collect it. Grandpa tried to contact him a few times over the course of about 3 months, but got no response. We eventually found the son passed away not two days after my grandfather spoke to him. The son was a hoarder and an alcoholic, so he lost a lot of stuff in his piles. My grandpa ended up donating to to the WW11 museum in New Orleans."

Japanese sword collectors use the term "gunto" to refer to mass produced, mostly machine made or assembly line production, blades of the WW II era. It is a term of derision. "Gunto" are thought of as low class, poorly made swords having no artistic value and of interest only as war relics. Even in Japan, this term is used to describe swords of no value. According to current Japanese regulations, "gunto" are not allowed to be imported into the country either for sale or restoration.

I bought one of those in Hawaii back in the early 80's. It was $50 USD then. NCO sword, mass-produced, etc. Apparently, a lot of them came back to the US just after the war. Only of interest as an actual piece of WW2 memorabilia.

The handle has been stripped unfortunately. The length of the blade suggests that it is the Wazhakazi (my spelling may be off on the word) which of the two swords carried by the Samurai, was the more ornate of the pair. Usually these were carried into court when visiting a dignitary or retainer. The handles frequently were wrapping in shark or ray skin leather, held on multiple layers of crossed woven gold and silk thread.

The paper material did but history didn't go the way they wanted it to but that was due to Hitler's own battle with extreme mental illness. As much as I didn't agree with what he stood for he was one of the greatest tacticians ever and if not for his mental illness, he probably would have succeeded. As a former medical and mental health specialist I struggle with that because of what I have studied throughout my childhood and adulthood and my career and how I believe people should be treated. I don't believe in racism, violence or hate but I've worked to treat mental illness so I'm conflicted. Was he insane or was he evil? The things he did were but was he? It's not my place to judge anyone so I struggle. I'm just glad he didn't succeed and we need to stop destroying history so we don't repeat it. Just my humble opinion.

2018 we bought a 1920 bungalow. It had been converted to apartments in the mid 40's. Laying on a shelf at head level were 2 sale papers from 1946 for a local store that's been gone since the 50's. Not sure how many tenants have occupied that apartment in those 72 years but for none of them to even move that paper is amazing. Time and silverfish havn't done them any favors but between the 2 we can view the entire 4 page ad.

Not strange, but unsafe. If it were somehow still loaded with old bullets it could definitely discharge with a slight touch. Edit: It also pointed straight at herself.

My buddy found an old Smith & Wesson in a house he was cleaning it was from the 1950s 22 six shooter awesome. I bought it from him thinking I could make it legal but since I didn't buy it from a previous owner there's no way I can register it. I thinking of turning it into the police station. By the way it's not uncommon to find guns in this area because there was a Smith & Wesson factory here until very recently so I'm sure a lot of people at least brought one home. But our gun laws have become much stricter since the fifties.

In the US, If they're 9 inch by 9 inch they are asbestos. Gov regulations made it illegal to produce 9x9 in² tiles so asbestos times could be instantly identified. Measure and if they're 9x9 call a guy because you don't want to touch them.

    Don't ever touch a 9x9 unless they're tested. 50/50 they're imbued with asbestos.

Misconception that asbestos was only in ceilings and walls. Between 1920 to 1960 its likely the tiles have asbestos. Between 60 and 1980 there's a lower chance. That's in North America. Many places still have it I'm sure. You just need to wet the tiles and wear proper gear. Disposal regulations though..look in it. Can only imagine was a germ swab culture would show 🤢

What looks like the “original” floor is exactly the same as what was in our house that was built in the 1930’s. It is asbestos, so we just covered it, but my point is that I think the time periods here may be off. Maybe the “original floor” was wood or was pulled up? I can’t believe the layer closest to the door was laid in the 1880’s.

Be careful, though, as this bill looks too well preserved to be 169+ years old. A lot of reproductions of Confederate currency have been made since the end of the Civil War. A lot of the real stuff didn’t survive, as it became so devalued it was used to line walls and light fires in cookstoves, or given to kids to play with and therefore tear up. What isn’t in museums or private collection is either long gone or undiscovered—-or reproductions. Have an expert check it over.

Ha. I remember I did the identification when this one popped up on reddit back in the day - it's a British WW1 QF 4.5-inch Howitzer (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QF_4.5-inch_howitzer) shrapnel shell, with a N°80 fuze. UXO (unexploded ordnance) but unfired so low risk. OP called the bomb squad which confirmed it was live and removed it.

I remember back in the early 90's some guys were burning down an old barn, unbeknownst to anyone there was live ordinance in the barn. Neither of them survived. Luckily there wasn't anyone around just watching it burn other than them.

The thrill of uncovering hidden treasures during home renovations can be akin to stumbling upon long-lost memories or friends. Imagine the surprise and joy when a simple home improvement project reveals a piece of history.

This sense of uncovering the unknown is reminiscent of reuniting with old friends unexpectedly, like in the story of the unexpected reunion between the Uber driver and his long-lost friend.

Many years ago, My husband and I moved into his parents house, as we had had to move out of the rental we were in and couldn't find another. I cleaned out her Medicine Cupboard, It had one of these in there, It stripped the paint of the door when I tried to get the lid off and the top of the bottle broke off, spilling the contents all down the door. taking the paint with it.. She stopped harping on at me for tossing out "Good Medicines".

Probably old school Laudanum. It was quite popular in Victorian times. If would still be quite popular today and someone would be a trillionaire from pushing it!

It's a German diary. The entries in German begin with "am 26 January 1865" and "am 28 January 1865". I can't read anymore but I know someone who could help. :)

Call me crazy but I think it is nuts to have quit teaching cursive writing! I mean, I know most everything becomes obsolete but many of our historical records are written in cursive. Good way to hide our history from the next generations huh? And no, I'm not wearing a tin foil hat! LOL

I was curious so I looked it up. Reference.com says a loaf of bread was $0.09. Google says the buying power of $46 in 1939 is comparable to about $980 today, or about 21.3x as much. So that would be like buying a loaf of bread for $1.92 now, which is roughly the cost of a generic crappy white loaf in my part of the US. Then again, many factory workers in the US don't earn close to 1k/wk now, either...

Friends of mine have been living in an old house in Freiburg (Germany). It belongs to an old brewery, there is a bar on the ground floor, and apartments on top. The windows in the roof are broken and stuffed with newspapers. Why would anybody reproduct anything as cheap? I mean if the house is older than the paper I don't see why it wouldn't be a true timepiece.

Queen Anne was a particularly gingerbready style of Victorian house. Had nothing to do with who the monarch was when the house was built—-most likely in the US, too, as lumber here was cheaper than stone or brick, especially for all the extra carved touches, which could be OTT.

I'm seeing a trend here... wondering if there's a specific reason for having them in the floor? Kinda like how people alive during wwii would hide their valuables in weird places in their houses afterwards

Makes them harder for burglars to locate. They know to check wardrobes and cupboards but they won't necessarily have the time to go around looking for a floor safe :)

Give it a few shakes and hold the can wall up to the side of your ears. You should hear the bubbles 'crackling' inside the can before they go to the top of the fluid.

Someone was secretly going to AA meetings instead of playing poker or bridge with friends. There was a time when it wasn’t something people advertised, as it could cost them their job, their family, their standing in the community. Sad they felt they had to hide it, but kudos to them for wanting to get sober! Hope they were successful.

It's amazing what memories a picture can dredge up from gawd knows where. The advert jingle was: "If the pint you like gives you that bit more, you can bet it's Carling Black Label!"

Well, they say it's beer, but anyone who's ever drunk Carling Black Label (it's still around - they used to sponsor the England Football Premier League) will tell you that it's a lot like making love in a canoe.

Found A Few Boxes Of .22 Bullets In A Wall Of An Old Cottage I'm Renovating, Pretty Neat

This bolt went right through one of the boxes, would have to assume they drilled through the box first. From the little research I did, it seems like they were made between 1957-1960s

    the last word is probably "cent" since it's a coin with a C, so we can assume that c = c, t=t, v = e, and christmastree/capitalJ=n ... so go from there.

The two-letter word would probably be: it, at, is, on, by, to, of, or, no, be…so that may help. Anyone else got ideas??? My first thought was some version of Hylian.

I had no idea safes were made sunk into floors. No saving the safe if the house caught fire!....although maybe it would keep things safe....like a safe would.
