For many of us, cartography day in geography or history class meant a quick nap. With our eyes open, we’d dream of all the delicious stuff we were gonna eat after school, of music we’d play on the Walkman, of a message we received the other day from that cutie…

To bring back our long-lost excitement for hard pieces of data, aka maps, plans, and geographic drawings, we're gonna need to start from the very best of them. Luckily, there’s a whole online community on Reddit dedicated to the most unusual charts of geographic areas that took maps to a whole new level.

From mapping "October" in European languages to mapping an eagle’s track over a period of twenty years, these incredible examples will surely put the world into a completely new perspective.

Who knows, you may well unleash your inner cartographer and become among 1.1 million like-minded members of the maps subreddit. In that case, you may need some more cartographical goodness with 41 maps that portray lesser-known facts about America.

That's because wolves mark the edges of their territories so different packs don't stray into another pack's territory. Watch movie "Never Cry Wolf"!

When I was a kid, bald eagles were on the endangered species list and I pretty much figured I'd never, ever see one. I live on Lake Erie, in Pennsylvania, and for the past decade they've made a comeback. I saw one for the first time fly very low over my house just the other day and it was utterly amazing. He was a monster (in size) and I might have squealed like a little kid for about 5 minutes. It's astonishing what one creature can do to my inner child!

In raptors (eagles, hawks, kites, etc.) the females are larger than the males. I watched a pair of Peregrine Falcons do an hour of pair-bonding flight after fledging four babies, and she was two-thirds larger than he was. It was really striking.

In Germany, it would be quite similar with our White Tailed Eagles, except the reason they have a huge comeback is that we banned a certain herbicide from use, which accumulates in the food-chain and weakened the egg-shells. We now have, in appropriate habitats, no shortage of our largest birds anymore! And they're getting more. Oh, I might add that there'd been a rehabitation-project that bred the eagles in captivity and then let them free to re-popularize the areas. It was a huge success, and we have a nest each year at our city and so far, the pair has brought up 2 little ones each year (5th year this year).

That’s what happened in the U.S. as well. DDT was to blame—it made the shells very thin and when the parents would roost on them, they would break. Eagles and condors (a very large vulture) were the worst hit.

I was in junior high in 1974. I remember learning that bald eagles were almost extinct in the wild, and that we would almost certainly never see one outside a zoo, or on film. Not one of us had ever seen one in person. Now, I can drive down a rural road at dawn or dusk, and see, in the wild, with my very own eyes, bald eagles!! We CAN make a difference in what happens to our world!

Eagle uses thermal flows to fly up effortlessly. The way it works is that the sun shines on the ground, it produces hot air above it, hot air weighs less than the cold air and it goes upwards. Eagle finds these spots on top of the ground and uses them. This doesn't happen on the surface of the water, since heating up the water needs more energy.

When I was a young rocket engineer, I got the chance to work in Japan for several years on the Japanese space program to launch weather and communication satellites. We had a great class taught by a professor from the University of California Sacramento about Japan. He said that the islands of Japan were physically about the same size as the state of California. In 1977 the population of America was about 200 million people and the population of Japan was about 100 million people. He said that Japan had about 40% usable land - there's a large part that's swamp land or the Aleutian island chain. California by comparison has about 60% usable land. The Sierra Nevada mountains and the dessert occupy the remainder. I always remember his final statement: Take half the entire population of the United States and move them all to California. Now take away 1/2 the usable land. That's how crowded Japan is.

The creator said that the title r/MapP**n followed the trend on Reddit at the time when “there were a lot of subreddits with a *-porn suffix.” He explained further: “This refers to pictures of innocuous things like nature, architecture, or engineering marvels in a beautiful way. It was not meant to be sexual. The internet at the time was a lot more relaxed and using that term was funny.”

“In the years since the culture on the internet has taken a much more puritan bias and some people don't like that name,” Patrick said.

However, he assured us that “the goal of the brand has not changed, though: it's a place to share and discuss beautiful maps.”

I think it should be centered on Nalanda University, Rajgir, Bihar, India (ancient center of scholarship). That would put the center meridian more or less in the middle of the largest landmass, and would put most of the world right in the center, rather than the British way that puts an ocean in the middle.

When it comes to submissions, they come in every form and style. “From historical maps showing ancient borders, to funny memes and transit maps. People also post imaginary maps of places that they create in their minds.”

In fact, every kind of map imaginable has been posted to this subreddit. Patrick said that linguistic maps are popular, as well as maps that re-imagine state and national borders. There are also maps of asteroids and maps of routes of famous explorers.

“One of my favorite interactions is when a map is posted of an obscure place and someone in the comments says they live there or has a story about that place.”

Why do people here think that if these countries were mentioned in the bible it has to do with Jesus? Facts: -Jesus was born in Nazareth, which is located in northern Israel of today. The population there is mostly brown-eyed with white/dark skin. -Other countries were also mentioned in the bible with no correlation to Jesus.

Actually this is false. Bible (just the Jewish one) mentions Scythia (Western Russia), Germany as well, it says "Ibera" but here they only used spain, same with Arabia and forgetting parts of it. WHere today is Afghanistand and Pakistan is mentioned. Other parts of Europe are mentioned as well in several different books. It also mentiones vague exotic lands to the very far east, beyond India as well. Lastly Bible makes references to sub-sahara africa as well, just doesnt specify which parts. So really the only places not mentioned is the America's, and even so, some theologians in the 1500's thought it may have mentioned it as it defines a land as being to the far west beyond the Med Sea.

I lived in Brazil for 2 years in the 1960s and spent 6 months of that time in the town of Blumenau. On one occasion I traveled to the coastal village of Itajai, a short distance away. At the beach there we saw a number of penguins swimming in to the shores. So I know that they travel at least that far north along the eastern coast of South America. Blumenau is about 2300 km north of Bahia Blanca.

there is one, from the west coast. The Pan-American route is a network of roads that start in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska and from there travel south through both North America and South America until it's ending point in Ushuaia, Argentina.

issue is rail lines in US are old as s**t, and not intended for fast travel. We have no intention in upgrading it either if anything our rail lines have decreased over time not increased.

A Railway A2A is underway to connect Alaska to the main Canadian/US rail network. The transiberian is going from western europe to vladivostok. Let's built the Vladivostok - Nome part, and we're good ! Far better than a highway.

The Martian civilizations would rise around that small inner sea on the right center. They would trade with far distances on the east then after many centuries they would cross the ocean to find a new route to the east but discover the continent on the west. Then they would enslave other Martians, make wars with each other, only to get more of a rare shiny metal. Then they would terminate their planet and go extinct. After a while robots of humans would arrive to search for life.

This is changing though. In the last 20 years, sizable gains have been made in the revival of the Irish language. Even something as trivial as the democratization of language studies through things like Rosetta Stone, Duolingo and Babble have helped this a lot.

It's making a big resurgence since the year 2000. I know someone whose first language is Irish and he has 2 siblings and his Da's side of the family speaks Irish at home. I'm learning Irish very slowly and am not from Ireland (do have relations to it the country though McCartney clan) so it's slowly making a come back. Most people from county Kerry learn how to speak Irish before they do any English and has been that way for the last 20 years or so.

"Famine" by Sinéad O'Connor: it is a beautiful song, and it tells about the real reason so many people died In the "famine": All the food except for potatoes was sent to England, even during potato blight when there were no potatoes.

5 years ago (edited) Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

That's a little simplistic, but hiding a real truth. In fact more food was imported into Ireland than exported during the famine, it just ended up being used as animal feed rather than being given to the population. Then the peasants' who's crops had failed could not afford to buy the animal products (large amounts of which did end up on the British market, where it fetched a higher price). There was a perfect storm that made the famine so bad which included a screwy tax system, centuries of economic penalties imposed on Catholics, a fanatical adherence to market forces, an unprecedented number of harvest failures and a startling lack of empathy within the English and Anglo-Irish ruling class for Irish peasants.

This seems to be taken from windy.com. First this map is not CO but CO2. Secondly it's not emissions but concentration. Thirdly when it's night in the US it's day in China and something in between in Europe, so time of day makes a big difference. For example this map shows Europe has much bigger emissions than the US when in fact it's the other way around.

Portugal was the first European contact. The Portuguese kin drink more tea when compared with the British people. The origin of tea in England happened because of a Portuguese Princess that became England’s Queen, she LOVED tea, because in Portugal EVERYBODY used to drink it. So, when the Queen started drinking tea, all British aristocracy started drinking also. And then some philologists say that the origin of the word tea is that in the boxes where Portugal use to transport Tea Herbs, in the boxes used to be written “Transporte de Ervas Aromáticas” (Aromatic’s herbs transports) and the initials that were on the box were “TEA”, so that is why the name, it’s the Portuguese influence in the world!! If you wanna read more, just look in this BBC report http://www.bbc.com/travel/story/20170823-the-true-story-behind-englands-tea-obsession

I don't know who and how created this map but I see it as oversimplified. It's not taking into account the English language influence during the colonial times. For example - it's hard to believe that in Myanmar they use 'tea' because of the sea trade routes while this country has quite a long border with China. The only explanation is the it's a former English colony. Plus there are lot's of tribes there so it's hard to believe they all use 'tea'. In Malaysia the Malays say 'teh' the Chinese "cha' and people with Indian origin 'chai'. And Portugal as a country with a land trade route to China? What a crap. They were first to discover the sea route to India (after the Arab merchants of course) so probably 'chá' in Portuguese is because of early contacts with India rather than with China. And we could go on like this...

Keep in mind that something like 80% of Australia's land is dessert, with 80% of the population on the east coast. The horizontal line joins Perth (capital of Western Australia), to the rest of the country. The vertical line joins Darwin (capital of the Norther Territory) with the rest of the country. Yes, there are smaller towns in the centre - but they are very rare.

And still, it is either complicated or very expensive to book a ticket from west to east, since most railway companies only focus on national travels or travels to the neighbouring countries only. When I travelled from Amsterdam to Stockholm, I had to book separate tickets at the Dutch, the German and the Swedish railway company, and crossed my fingers that all of them would be in time, so that I would not miss one. And it wasn’t even fast: the trip took 24 hours. A trip from Amsterdam to Kyiv would even take 3 days. From an environmental perspective I prefer the train over flying, but with these circumstances the train will never win from flying with most people.

The British did create railway routes so that they can quickly extracts goods, however the dense network that you see above was formed later after independence, specially in the last thirty years.

People apparently don't. (I mean, there seem to be some long distance buses called Greyhounds, but in general, poor people and other non-car-drivers are apparently expected to stay where they are. Even getting around in cities can be hard without a car from what I read. Next to no public transport, bicycles are seen as only nuisances and even a lack of sidewalks to just walk somehwere!)

Wrong. Pedestrian crossings in Poland are marked with a different sign. In this photo it is accompanied by a sign used when a kindergarten is nearby. 1568963577...77787b.jpg 1568963577_foto_13354_3317-5f89ffd77787b.jpg

Take regular world map, pin down all places two borders meet (so "3 country points") or one border meets water. Islands you can simplify to a dot. Now straighten all detail out, because surface area does not matter; then arrange neatly/however. But here it went wrong a few times (e.g. Poland).

If exclaves would not be ignored, it would be a more complicated, but also an even more weird and interesting map. A.o. Russia would also share a border with Poland (Kaliningrad Oblast) and The Netherlands and France would share a border too (Sint-Maarten/Saint-Martin)

The 1050 map wasn't a geographical representation of the world, and wasn't expected to be used to teach geography or be used for navigation. It was a religious representation of the world. The maps that were used for education and navigation were different. However, European ones were likely a lot worse than the Arab ones of the period, although I would guess that Europeans who could afford one would use a copy of one of the Arab maps.

Anyone lower than the second blue from the deepest is a coward! I only count 12 inches or 30 cm as acceptable if it has occurred in a short period of time. 12 inches of snow is hard to drive in if the roads have not been plowed especially in all-season tires (which everyone should have for winter - I am looking at the South on this one where they think summer tires are all year tires) Snow tires, not a problem. Now, if visibility is low due to blizzard conditions, no one should drive.

I don't think the Illinois map is quite accurate. Northern IL schools close way before 6-12" of snow.

This map is inaccurate to an extent other factors come into play. Especially in the upper Great Plains. There, Wind plays a huge factor. So there could only be 6 inches of snow but if the winds are blowing and gusting, usually school canceled. Or if it's bitterly cold (like below zero for highs).

Here in the Netherlands it's the same. John comes from the bible and in Dutch it's translated as Johannes. Jan/Hans are indeed shorter versions.

Funfact: I live in the Netherlands and though it's indeed quite normal to keep your shoes on it is not in the village I live in. The whole village takes off their shoes when visiting someone. In fact, even at the office they'll take of their shoes.

Netherlands here, and it's true, we definitely don't take our shoes off when visiting someone. Which I'm extremely glad about, because on the rare occasions that people do ask this from you, I am extremely uncomfortable. I can't speak for anybody else, but personally I find it too... intimate?

The title is tricky and too long... Since it's on the southern hemisphere its size is somewhat misleading on North American maps. In other worlds: Brazil is so huge that its N-S length is more than its distance from North American countries.

How To Become President With 22% Of The Vote

How To Become President With 22% Of The Vote

If you would get 50.1% of the vote of each red-coloured state, 22% of the population of the country, you would become president, even if 78% of the country voted for another person, this is assuming that 49.9% of people in the the red-coloured states voted for the blue party, and 100% of the people in the blue-coloured states voted for the blue party.

NOTE: The colours dont mean anything

@I’m not even going to try to write that out, as it would give me an aneurysm, it is, in fact, the nearest country to you when in Russia

Tank is an attack weapon, not defense weapon. We in Estonia are all about defense, not attack.

Actually Tanks are excellent defensive Weapons, you should HR McMasters treatise on tanks. They are essentually mobile armor protected gun platforms, ideal for both offense and defense. Estonia is all about being in NATO where if anyone attacks, all the other NATO countries must come in and help, like the US, Germany, UK, etc. Estonia focuses on being hold off an invader long enough for NATO to respond. But you are also a tiny country, so it is understandable and makes perfect tactical sense.

The Netherlands has exactly 18 tanks. Total. And they're not even ours, we lease them from Germany

Yes, Russia has 14 per 100,000 people. It's...Russia. --- But why does GREECE have TWELVE?? Seems a bit extreme (for any Euro-country other than Russia).

I want to live somewhere where I have to where a light jacket in summer and I'm snowed in during winter. I'm tired of sweating mid October.
