To find out more about this amusing Reddit community by the name r/MapP**n, Bored Panda reached out to its creator Patrick McGranaghan, who started the subreddit in 2011 while living in Taiwan.
Patrick said he has always been a map geek: “I wanted people to share those maps so that they are easy to find and discuss.”
It turns out, he works as a land surveyor in Colorado and is a devoted member of several map societies across the nation, including the North American Cartographic Information Society, Charles Close Society for the Study of Ordnance Survey Maps, and Rocky Mountain Map Society, to name just a few.

Japan, How Big It Is In Reality?
Okay, mind blown; it's literally twice as big as I'd imagined given typical maps. Thank you, person who made it!
The creator said that the title r/MapP**n followed the trend on Reddit at the time when “there were a lot of subreddits with a *-porn suffix.” He explained further: “This refers to pictures of innocuous things like nature, architecture, or engineering marvels in a beautiful way. It was not meant to be sexual. The internet at the time was a lot more relaxed and using that term was funny.”
“In the years since the culture on the internet has taken a much more puritan bias and some people don't like that name,” Patrick said.
However, he assured us that “the goal of the brand has not changed, though: it's a place to share and discuss beautiful maps.”

When it comes to submissions, they come in every form and style. “From historical maps showing ancient borders, to funny memes and transit maps. People also post imaginary maps of places that they create in their minds.”
In fact, every kind of map imaginable has been posted to this subreddit. Patrick said that linguistic maps are popular, as well as maps that re-imagine state and national borders. There are also maps of asteroids and maps of routes of famous explorers.
“One of my favorite interactions is when a map is posted of an obscure place and someone in the comments says they live there or has a story about that place.”

List Of Countries Mentioned Or Referred In The Bible
Wow, I never knew this. Unlikely Jesus was fair skinned, blond and blue eyed....
Yeah he was from Nazareth, and the Bible states he looked no different than the average man there. Brown skin, brown eyes, brown hair, and probably on the short side too. Those paintings of a Swedish Jesus are just stupid. 😁
Load More Replies...This a LIE! It doesn't show 'Mericuh, and everyone knows Jesuse loves 'Mericuh!
Oh honestly people, stop shaming peoples religions, and stop downvoting due to religious beliefs.
i downvote all stupid superstition. and this whining plea to stop being mean to stupid superstition.
Load More Replies...Why do people here think that if these countries were mentioned in the bible it has to do with Jesus? Facts: -Jesus was born in Nazareth, which is located in northern Israel of today. The population there is mostly brown-eyed with white/dark skin. -Other countries were also mentioned in the bible with no correlation to Jesus.
Actually this is false. Bible (just the Jewish one) mentions Scythia (Western Russia), Germany as well, it says "Ibera" but here they only used spain, same with Arabia and forgetting parts of it. WHere today is Afghanistand and Pakistan is mentioned. Other parts of Europe are mentioned as well in several different books. It also mentiones vague exotic lands to the very far east, beyond India as well. Lastly Bible makes references to sub-sahara africa as well, just doesnt specify which parts. So really the only places not mentioned is the America's, and even so, some theologians in the 1500's thought it may have mentioned it as it defines a land as being to the far west beyond the Med Sea.
I can’t believe we are even having this discussion. Like today, the color of ones skin matters little compared to the content of his heart. Jesus was/is a symbol of the type of person we all need to be more like.
Exatly. But for some people, race and skin colour is everything.
Load More Replies...IDK if this is true. Jordan is nota marked, but the city Gadara, mentioned in Bible, is called Umm Quais today and is located in Jordan.
The (Hebrew) Bible describes parts and peoples in Jordania. Shouldnt Jorden be added?
The area that is now Jordan is colored red, it is included.
Load More Replies...King David and Esau were descendants of Abraham, who’s descendants are the known as Hebrews (meaning - to traverse, crossover), later, the nation of Israel, and today Israel and Jews. Both those men are described as having ruddy (reddish) complexions. They may have been red heads too.
actually red hair as well as brown are commonly used to dscribe and draw people from that region in ancient Egypt and ancient Persia, so quite possible. Red and brown hair is still quite common in the region.
Load More Replies...Many are wondering what Jesus looked like...but you should be wondering what His Word says and reading the Holy Bible.
no. you should get over indoctrination and stop believing in stupid ideas like a super-ghost controlling the universe.
Load More Replies...To be fair, when the bible was suppose to be taking place many of the "Countries" outlined in the current map were not around yet. And I am sure the countries named in the bible had differing boarders than the current map represents.
India is mentioned in Esther 1:1 and 8:9 as the eastern boundary of the Persian Empire under Ahasuerus (c. fifth century B.C.) and in 1 Maccabees 6:37 in a reference to the Indian mahouts of Antiochus's war elephants (second century B.C.). Otherwise there are no explicit references to India in the Old Testament. Hodu (Hebrew: הֹדּוּ Hoddû) is the Biblical Hebrew name for India mentioned in the Book of Esther part of the Jewish Tanakh and Christian Old Testament. In Esther 1:1 and 8:9, Ahasuerus (Xerxes) had been described as King ruling 127 provinces from Hodu (India) to Ethiopia.
Great one. Also please keep in mind the borders have shifted quite a bit that's why there's a gap between India and Iran. If it was based on maps in those days it would be a continuous red stripe.
The gap happened only 70 years back. The India (as Alexander had seen) was a continuous area which includes modern Pakistan, Bangladesh,Afghanistan, Nepal and Tibet(as in seen in Nalanda engravings). The area guarded by Himalayas and sea. The area Europeans wanted to "discover" for a long time.
Load More Replies...So Texas one of the most Bible believing States in America is not even mentioned in The Bible.
I didn't know that where you are from being mentioned in the Bible was a prerequisite for believing in Christianity.
Load More Replies...ignoring the angry religious banter in the rest of the comments... Have a great day ! I love you :/)
Interesting! I would have thought fewer than that. Where does India and Europe come into it?
The Roman Empire ruled over Israel back then, that's why part of Europe is red.
Load More Replies...The country names used in the Bible do not always correspond to the later use of the name.
Don't ascribe modern country names to the map. You would have to go back in history to determine what country names would have occupied that space at that time. The name "India" may have first been used sometime in the 5th to 12th Centuries CE.
Load More Replies...Well, why would he mention Germany or Russia? travel-opportunities were sparse during that time. I'm surprised India was named!
Russia is mentioned, scythia and other places are mentioned. Germany is mentioned as well. India is mentioned in the book of Esther where it says "From India to Ethiopia" as the size of the Empire of Ahserius.
Load More Replies...It is the region previously known as Gaul, mentioned in 1 Maccabees 20:8 (a deutorocanonical book available only in the Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Bibles).
Load More Replies...There is a perfect family tree for him in the Bible and it goes all the way back to Abraham
Load More Replies...Not surprising as the area covers all the ancient civilizations flourishing at His time.
question as a Muslim i don't know much about the bible and as an American-Egyptian id like to know if Egypt was the bad or good guys
they started good, but ended bad ... with enslaving all the jews and such.
Load More Replies...This poves the Bible was written by people who had no idea of the existence of most lands beyond a small area of the world. So it cannot be the word of a supreme being, but stories collected, translated, and changed by human beings over two thousand years. Indigenous Australians have been here for over 60 thousand years, but nothing below the equator gets a mention.
It is the region previously known as Gaul, mentioned in 1 Maccabees 20:8 (a deutorocanonical book available only in the Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Bibles). A lot of todays states where not formed back then, areas had other names .
Load More Replies...You forgot all of the province of Asia. Paul ran into some trouble there, remember?
Actually, in the story of Samson, he goes to Poland and kills either it was 300 or 1000 people with a donkey jaw. (btw im polish)
This map is wrong. "Heaven" is clearly referred to in the Bible, so why isn't Ireland 🇮🇪 highlighted?
This map is wrong. "Heaven" is clearly referred to in the Bible, so why isn't Ireland 🇮🇪 highlighted on here?
I did know that India had early connections with Christianity... never knew it was mentioned or referred to in the Bible...
Of course if a person's biggest concern is what color his skin was they are probably not going to meet him. He would not have been European. Thing is there are images of him in pretty much every possibility but when most of those painting were being made they were made in by artist that were paid by men who wanted him to look that way so that's why they painted him that way
I did NOT know France, Spain and Italy were mentioned in the Bible!
By official name . . . At best. 1. Even the peoples of those specific nations have spread far and wide 2. Genesis 10 wrecks
NO WAY was Jesus fair skinned and blue eyed! Def middle eastern appearance!
Jesus went to india and traveled in many places learning and teaching
Population translocation was practiced during the many centuries that we now think of as "the times of the Bible." That is, when an area was conquered, some portion of its native population, often the teachers, scholars, leaders, influencers, were forcibly moved to a distant place, and members of another culture were moved into the conquered lands, which served to disrupt usual folkways, introduce the cultural norms of the conquerers to the conquered as well as permitting( or forcing) the conquered to learn how the other side lived. There are numerous instances cited throughout Biblical history. As far as the names of the countries, it's hard to tell, since national boundaries as we know them didn't correspond well to the lands held or claimed by the ancients. There are non-Hebrews mentioned whose places of origin don't correspond to a single modern geographical place. Example: Tzippora, daughter of Isro, a priest of Midian, married Moses. Where is that place?
Hypothetically: if you THEN had met a person from India on “vacation” in France (Gaul) and asked the classic “Oh! Then you must know GW? He lives there.” You would have got the answer “Yeah! Old GW! Sure, he’s married to my old aunt!”
Thee is no way on Gods green earth that Jesus is white, blonde, and blue eyed...no way
Book of Esther where is says Ahasuerus kindgdom was "M'Hodu V'ad Kush" or in English it is "From India to Ethiopia"
Load More Replies...Every time I see a map like this I am amazed at how big Alaska is. I know I should have written this on the Alaska post, but I didn't.
Patrick concluded that “Maps are a way to visualize the world in a way that is easy to grasp. They are an aid in learning about new lands and faraway places. They help us find our way when we are lost.”
Especially in a time like now, “when the pandemic prevents us from traveling, maps are a way that we can travel without leaving our home,” the map enthusiast said.
