Digging up obscure facts isn't just fun. Turns out, it's also good for our mental health. For example, experts say that playing trivia games can provide a dopamine rush much like gambling, but without the negative effects.
Even if our trivia games differ, the benefits are there. Whether we're playing Trivial Pursuit at home or attending a pub trivia night, the basic premise remains the same: we experience the thrill of providing correct answers to questions about lesser-known facts.

"You get a rush or a neuroreward signal or a dopamine burst from winning,” John Kounios, Ph.D., professor of psychology and director of the doctoral program in applied cognitive and brain sciences at Drexel University in Pennsylvania, told Healthline. “I think whenever you’re challenged with a trivia question and you happen to know it, you get a rush. It’s sort of like gambling.”
Rescued Elephants
When an elephant from a herd dies, the other elephants surround it in a circle, paying tribute. Elephants from other herds will often join if they had "met" on the trek to find water as they remember the scents of other elephants their entire lives. Having known a few elephants in my life I truly believe that they know the souls of people they love. Just my opinion. I think they felt his death and needed to honor him. There are many exceptional documentaries about elephants on PBS, Animal Planet, Blue Planet, and Nat Geo.

Hemp
Technologies exist that would allow us to continue to enjoy most of what we have while greatly reducing our damage to the planet - if gov'ts and corporations were willing to act.
I live in a rural area. I love trees and have planted several varieties in addition to preserving the trees already here. Logging is destructive in many ways including erosion and destroying animal habitats. Trees take decades to mature. If hemp or bamboo can get the job done, do it.
Imagine where we could be if they didn't outlaw hemp and marijuana out of ignorance. Coulda had a lot of rainforest still.
Many countries allow hemp as soon as it only has CBD and not TIH (so it does not make you high).
Load More Replies...why the hell are we still cutting down tress for paper then ?? this is way better 4 times better in fact
A lot of countries that can grow hemp have severe restrictions and regulations for its growth due to marijuana.
Load More Replies...I've been screaming this for years, we can press it make medicine, we can chop it up shred it into bricks and cars, houses and bio fuels 💯 sustainable. We can let go of oil but no one listens. It's fire proof, water roof and indestructible in other ways..Google guy made a car from hemp, or build bricks, or homes or fuel s from hemp...it's amazing stuff
Supposed to be punctuation after the Google,. It's not Google guy but to Google ,the guy who build ect.. sorry was excited
Load More Replies...Even family guy referenced this in an episode about how William Randolph Hurst campaigned against the hemp industry under the guise of being against marijuana when really he knew hemp could be better for paper and didn't want to lose money.
I wish I could upvote this 6000x ......... over logging of our northern Ontario forests then sprayed so that pine only grows here.... is absolutely ruining the biodiversity in our boreal forest and forever changing the acidity in the soil... among many other problems .HEMP could help solve.
What we do to trees gives me nightmares. Between hemp, bamboo and recycling, there is very little need to be felling trees for consumer products. I hope we realize we're killing our own planet in time to save it.
But how will we populate the prisons with slave labor if we don't outlaw a useful cash crop? Note: slavery is still legal in the US. You just have to be convicted of a crime. Hence why up to 1/3 of Black American men are in the criminal justice system.
I've been hearing this since I was in school. And I'm 49 now. Someone needs to be doing this!
Would be curious to learn more about the water, soil, fertilization, etc. needs between the two options. Also, the climate needed and how available space is in that climate. There’s obviously more to take into consideration than just acreage.
What, no more old growth forest burnt to the ground!!! Outrageous no wonder the banned hemp.
hat a world we'd be living in (greener and cleaner) if Henry Ford and Co didn't have a massive boner over oil and plastics so they banned and discredited hemp as much as possible...
You've got that mixed up. Henry Ford saw oil and plastics used in car making and operating as unsustainable. He actually developed a car that was made of hemp and ran off hemp oil. However, the gas industry saw this as a threat and worked alongside other industries (cotton, steel, paper) to prohibit hemp. It is really such a loss for humanity, we could have had such a more beautiful and clean world.

Kounios said the benefits can also be similar to those of playing a video game.
However, unlike gambling and even video games, Kounios said trivia is generally not a problematic habit.
“I don’t think there are any pitfalls,” he said. “Like anything else that’s fun, it takes up time.”

A librarian from California, Sarah Kishler, loves trivia games and enjoys attending a monthly pub trivia night in which a team of librarians participate.
"Learning facts so that I can get better at trivia is definitely a passion of mine," she told Healthline. "Getting a question right is definitely very satisfying to me."

Not all hero’s wear capes. Some wear a helmet and uniform….and ride around in a big red water filled truck:)
Over the past decade or so, pub trivia nights that are popular in the United Kingdom appear to have grown in other parts of Europe and the United States.
Enthusiasts like Kishler enjoy getting to interact with people at these events, especially compared to electronic trivia games.
She has learned that doing well at these social trivia games gives her "a feeling of validation" and increases her self-esteem.

"I love general knowledge, geography, literature, music, science trivia," Kishler explained. "I just love to accumulate knowledge. I like the exercise that it gives my brain and memory."
She doesn't think of herself as a competitive person but nevertheless enjoys getting a bit amped up at trivia games.

Except for the bit where the whole theory that wolves fight for supremacy in a pack and that the strongest wolf becomes the leader has already been debunked. Especially by the guy who came up with it.
“People really like to have some expertise on something and the brain is very good at focusing on things that you’re interested in,” Deborah Stokes, Ph.D., L.P.C., B.C.N., a psychologist in Virginia, who focuses on neurotherapy, also told Healthline.

Side fact: The guy that came up with idea of putting lead in petrol to stop engine knocking also came up with the early CFCs that f***s the ozone layer and later died from getting caught up in his own machinery he'd developed to help him get out of bed after becoming sick with polio... saw it on QI once :)

According to Stokes, learning large bodies of knowledge can often start with trivia. And people who are interested in trivia can be brainy, have a high IQ, and be smart on a lot of levels.
However, Kounios said that people aren’t necessarily better at trivia games just because they’re more educated.

"Some people soak up facts,” Kounios added. "Plenty of people with a lot more education may not remember what they had for breakfast yesterday morning."
"In typical people, my observation, not backed up by any research, is that their interest in trivia is confined to topics that they are generally interested in. So if a person is very interested in history, then they may either seek out history trivia, or they might just naturally pick it up in the course of learning about nontrivial aspects of history."

During the Holocaust in Greece, the entire, 275-person Jewish population of the island of Zakynthos was not deported after Mayor Loukas Karrer and Bishop Chrysostomos (1890–1958) refused Nazi orders to turn in a list of the members of the town's Jewish community for deportation to the death camps. Instead they secretly hid the town's 275 Jews in various rural villages and turned in a list that included only their own two names. The entire Jewish population survived the war.
Stokes pointed out that trying to retain information about things we're interested in can be like a good exercise for the frontal cortex as the brain ages.
"That’s the first thing to go with injury or with age if we don’t use it," she said.

Of course, it's completely understandable if all the stress and negativity sometimes drains your brain of the desire to learn and exhausts it instead.
In an earlier Bored Panda interview, Lenore Skenazy, the president of Let Grow and the founder of the Free-Range-Kids movement, said that before we can become curious again, we have to do the hard part: get off the couch. Force yourself out the door. Why? Because beyond your four walls, things are never exactly the same. Weather, animals, people, sounds, smells, clouds—they’re all swirling about."
