40 Times Designers Forgot Things Need To Be Cleaned When Creating Them, As Shared On This Facebook Group
To most of us, cleaning is a chore. Something we do just because we have to. So we try to optimize the process as much as possible. Get it done in the fastest way possible, with the least amount of energy required.
However, some people probably haven't picked up a vacuum cleaner or a dust wand in their entire life.
There's a private Facebook group with a pretty self-explanatory title, called 'Things designed by people who don't have to clean them', and it has about 40,000 members, all sharing pictures of objects that absolutely terrify Monica Geller and Adrian Monk. From an amethyst sink to a dollhouse PC case, continue scrolling and check them out for yourself.

Dollhouse Fishtank
Please don't treat your fish like toys! Goldfish need a 500l tank, and need a group of atleast 6 goldfish. They are intelligent and beautiful animals
I really don’t think paint would have been used. Probably resin moulded furniture which is the same materials used in most tank ornaments.
Load More Replies...A 500L tank? Hahahahaha. A 473 Litre (125 US G.) tank is 182.9cm (72")long by45.7cm (18") wide by 53.3cm (21") tall and weighs 93Kg (206 lbs) empty. A gold fish (or 6) doesn't need a tank that big.
Wow!! According to a google search, they're supposed to have a 20 gallon tank because goldfish can grow up to 2 feet in size( depending on species). That 20 gal tank is only sufficient for 2 fish. So, at 10 gal per fish you'd need a 60 gal tank for 6 of them. About half the size this person said, but far larger than most goldfish bowls sold. I knew goldfish could grow to the size of their environment and thought everyone kept them in small bowls to prevent that. What I didn't know is that not all goldfish grew to be huge if allowed to.
Load More Replies...for a sec i thought there were giant fish in someones bathroom
The founder of the group, Will Feetham, created it out of his passion for the design world. "We spend most of our time in spaces designed by other humans, and sometimes subtle careless decisions during [the design process and construction processes] cause a huge amount of hassle for the people that use the space," Feetham told Bored Panda.
Currently, the group is private and you have to answer a few political questions to get in. Feetham has had pushback from the applicants about this as the group seems anything but political, however, he believes that the design and maintenance of our spaces are deeply political. "The entire point of 'Things designed by people who don't have to clean them' is that those who design and those who maintain are not the same," he said. "Because we spend most of our time in spaces [designed by others], this disconnect has a huge impact, especially on those who traditionally don't have power in society."
Amethyst Sink
Amethyst this size must be pretty expensive. I wouldn't waste it like that. Maybe as an ornament it would be perfect :)
And scraping your knuckles on that while you wash you hands would not be fun.
Load More Replies...Pretty but impractical, anything that cleaned it properly would most likely ruin the surface.
Maybe if they put some resin around it so it’s a smooth surface cause it’s really pretty
I’d be afraid to brush my teeth and spit in this sink.....how do you clean?
"Looking at bad design helps highlight the importance of good design, and thinking about who will clean what we design makes us focus on the importance of inclusion in the design process. As a tag group, we can inject a bit of thought about these issues into a lot of different conversations which makes me so happy."
If we were to get specific, Feetham got the idea for the group from a picture of a topographical relief sink modeled after a lake, which he has been told is in the California state library. "It's beautiful, and the concept is both insightful and educational. In the execution, though, the designer didn't consider the people who would have to clean the installation. Clearly, a lot of thought went into the concept, but that thoughtfulness doesn't seem to have extended to maintenance. 'Things designed by people who don’t have to clean them' just popped into my head."
All Hail The Glow Cloud
It looks really cool but imagine the number of bugs nesting in there *shudder*
I want this. I love clouds. Idk why but sometimes they make me so happy I cry. My bf sends me pictures of pretty clouds when he's able to and it always makes me smile. He told me when we move in together we can have cloud lamps hanging from the ceiling and/or on the walls. I'm really really allergic to dust/dust mites but I would still love to have this in my future home.
Is there's video how to make this? I want a room like this for my daughter
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2oFlPlMNIyw i never watched it so sorry if its bad
Load More Replies...Just imagine having to clean up all the dead animals in the morning!
Load More Replies...As you could guess, Feetham himself doesn't like cleaning. "As a cisgender man in our patriarchal culture, I have been allowed to do less than my share of household chores at many points in my life," he said. "Equality is deeply important to me, and I have come to understand the many ways, large and small, that the caring and cleaning work that forms the foundation of our daily existence is minimized."
According to him, our society tends to devalue the invisible service class, who are often women and people of color. So they are left to pick up the pieces, literally, and tend to the performative aesthetics of our consumer culture.
Feetham describes the content of the group as design-focused critical analysis. Some of the things that get submitted a lot are carpets in places it shouldn't be, crafts that involve gluing shells and rocks, and impossible to clean windows. "The start of the group was more focused on public infrastructure, but we also have a lot of content about consumer goods and home decor that create a maintenance nightmare."
Thanks I Hate It
I actually love this. Super cool. I would just dust it with compressed air.
yeah, me too. as long as you keep it away from those who may injure themselves upon it, it's really cool :)
Load More Replies...Yes! Me too!! Like it's waiting to be knocked over!!
Load More Replies...Love it. It's beauchene. It would be easy to clean with compressed air as its all smooth surfaces
It's the only thing you can do after accidentally breaking a vase: Claim it's a "traditional chinese 3D puzzle" and give it as a present, or this kind of thing. Or, you know, the dustbin.
Load More Replies...at least think about how much time and effort they put into this partly broken-ish vase
Load More Replies...This Pot
I’m a dad --I’d only keep orange juice in this. Just to say “freshly squeezed” when I pour it to watch my kids die a little inside.
I want this! But yeah, I think its more of a deocration piece than anything you'd actually use.
Radiator With A Bread Warmer
But with all the holes, where are the crumbs dropping down to inside?
Load More Replies...I think it's a great idea. Toast scarf or gloves, towels, even socks. If using for bread, put the bread on a pan or sheet of foil.
Yes, you are right. I mean what sort of insane mania would just toss bread in without using a tray or sheet of foil atleast.
Load More Replies...Endless uses, put your gloves in it, prove dough, try to revive probably dead hamster.
That last suggestion about the dead hamster had me laughing.
Load More Replies...All these posts "correcting" what it is meant to warm. Let's just say it's a warmer and it can warm whatever you can fit into there.
No this is a plate warmer, never ever food would be placed in it. Plates are warmed to keep the food hot. As for cleaning such a radiator it's easy, a little of soapy water, rinse and dry with a clean towel. Voilà!
You could maybe put a covered hot dish on top to keep it warm, providing you took the cat off of it first.

Load More Replies...These Wine Bottles/ Decanters/ Glasses Look Really Cool, But Cleaning Them? Hell No! I'd Probably Used Them Once And Then Threw Them Into A Fireplace Or Something
good idea but you would probs have to wash them still
Load More Replies...If you can pour wine into it, can't you do the same with some soapy water then rinse it out thoroughly?
I have a similar (but less elaborate) decanter, you use decanter beads like with any other and it cleans just fine.
This is the right question (and moreover if you drank some other wine before....)
Load More Replies...A decanter is created to let tree he wine "breathe", so it should be wide with quite a big body to provide a bigger surface. At least that's what I learned. These creepy things defeat that purpose
these things are amazing! if only used to store wine I dont see why it would be hard to clean? warm water for any reddish residue, and you're good to go!
Cutlery Set
Cutlery set designed by Salvador Dali. Last time it sold was for 50k British pounds.
Dollhouse PC
I’m not going to lie, I would buy this for my 23yr old daughter 🤷🏼♀️
Not to be weird or anything but you look so young, how on earth do you have a 23 year old daughter ma'am?
Load More Replies...We bought canned air for years until we realised our manual pump (for our air bed) works just as well. Brilliant money saver and better for the environment. :-D
Load More Replies...Thats super neat. I would want one, in black. Goth doll house. ^.^
As someone who is a PC gamer, this honestly really cool and creative.
Broken Ankle Bathtubs, Fantastic
I have to think about all the little critters that could hide somewhere between the stones.
This looks like a spa. So whoever has to clean the place is at least being paid to do it. 🤷♀️
let me just climb the stones to step down into my bathtub to put away/take out items from my dressers.... cuz that is the kinda logic that is existing here
Why are there dresser above the tub, attached to the wall?

Is this from a movie? Not sure, but she sort of looks like Jayne Mansfield
I'm pretty sure that was her home, I remember seeing this years go but I couldn't remember who it belonged to.
Load More Replies...That's actually the actress Jayne Mansfield's bathroom from long ago. https://www.google.com/search?q=jayne+mansfields+bathroom&oq=&aqs=chrome.0.35i39i362l5...5.-1j1j7&client=ms-android-boost-us-revc&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8#imgrc=EJCtsLpGSMZOoM

Load More Replies...When lights like these were popular years ago, they got cleaned maybe twice a year or less. And I’m talking even in my mother’s generation, when women were primarily housewives, and had all day every day to clean (and cook, and take care of kids and hubby).
Cute But...
Shot glasses would be fine. I mean, the hard liquor 'cleans' them anyway. Just remember to store upside-down.
There's more than alcohol and water in hard liquor. From things that stains to sugar, you also have to clean shot glasses. I complain everytime my husband forgets to clean his. Once the thing actually glued itself to the counter (probably the dried sugar or whatever that ran down on the outside of the glass)
Load More Replies...I would be scared if those pieces accidently broke while drinking.
Sorry that's CAUSE problems, by the way, but I guess you're right.
Load More Replies...Those Poor Books!
This appears to be in a shop, I see display shelves and wrapped products. It's awful either way. I LOVE books, this is sacrilegious!
Load More Replies...I think it's a fantastic way to repurpose books that were almost certainly headed to the dump. Some books just don't get bought, think "How to operate a blackberry for dummies, 2005". I've seen this type of think online and the books could be covered in shellac or lacquer of some kind. The worst part of this is that it weighs a TON.
That is a wonderful way to re-use paperback books and long as they could be properly sealed to prevent insect infestation and allow easier cleaning and maintenance.
Don't worry. They're all copies of Donald Trump's, " The Art of the Deal."
They look like they're glued to a frame of some kind, but still wouldn't last long.

Load More Replies...A brush would take care of the crevices, no problem. I'm more worried with the waste of yolk. It's the best part and I don't want one drop to be lost like in this weird pic
Me too. Butt cool for kids. Kids love playing volcano with their food.
Load More Replies...Has no one heard of a dish washer? Run this through an industrial dishwasher once and you most likely will have a pretty sterile volcano.
I doubt many people have an industrial dishwasher tucked away in their kitchens. Mine is a very humble domestic job.
Load More Replies...As long as its dishwasher safe, this will probably come pretty clean
That's what I would use...soft or medium bristles so they're flexible.
Load More Replies...Submerge in warm water, let it soak it up and then wash with a brush :D
Go buy a $0.97 sponge from the dollar tree, a sample/travel size of dish soap, run some warm water put some soap on the sponge and scrub soapy sponge on eggy dishware. Rinse suds under water until clean. No dishwasher or tooth brush required.
Load More Replies...Ever heard of a dishwasher? I bet a good dishwasher with a two hour cleaning cycle would get all the old crusty stuff off.

This is the kind of thing you get professionally cleaned every few decades (other than with a light feather duster)
This is the kind of thing that if you can afford the house it goes in, you can afford to pay the staff to clean it as often as you like.
Load More Replies...It's obviously in a château or a Manor. This type of intricate chimney gets cleaned at least once a week by the staff. No way it's every tenth year, otherwise it would be black with soot.
This is a fireplace at a National Trust property called "Cragside" in UK. It is beautiful

Stair Handle
Why is this awful? You take a soft paint brush to dust it, est voilà it's done. No need for a maid. People are make big deals out of nothing.
Have you ever cleaned a handrail ? They not only get dusty, they get dirty. While a paintbrush is great for the dust you are going to need something stronger for all the dirt and oils from hands.
Load More Replies...During a performance in a large fancy house, a fellow thespian knocked over a loose decoration like this (but smaller) when coming down the stairs onto the stage. Luckily, I was playing the maid. I came on stage quickly at a suitable point, picked up the decoration, tutted and rolled my eyes as an aside & got a chuckle from the audience.
The parts you touch won't collect dust. The parts you don't touch don't need to be clean as a surgeon's tools anyway, so ... just ... just ... live with it and end of ...? Might work very well. Also, a house in general isn't a sterile area - a little dust, as long as it really is a little, wouldn't bother me much.
That's not a handle, it's an ornamental baluster. Under what circumstances would it be touched? I mean it would be a pain in the ass to polish, but a simple feather duster is all that would be needed most of the time. Or maybe some lysol of you felt someone touched it.
There is a correct name for this. The post at each end of a stair bannister is named a newel post. The k**b on top is named a newel cap or finial.

Those Crevices In The… Whatever That Is
I would love a bathroom I could just take a pressure washer to. This might be it.
The left is a sink, the right is a seat, but based on the layout, I would think the whole place just gets hosed down.
Uh-uh. Nope. No way. I need drawers to put my makeup and other stuff in.

Cursed
You guys never had crochet stuff like that on you grandma's ir something? Pretty common (except for the flower). It is usually a set there's the toilet rug and the shower/bath rug (outside the shower) as well and or a rug to be in front of the sink. Then you go and wash it all in your normal weekly cleaning. This piece would be cleaner than the rugs.
Why would it be cleaner? You are supposed to CLOSE the lid before flushing! Otherwise all those dirty water particles (including whatever you dumped in the toilet) will fly free in the bathroom, settling on everything. Imagine your toothbrush in that bathroom. That's just gross!

I'm guessing the backside has elastic on the edge so it can slide on & off for cleaning... like a toilet seat cover. Just needs a velcro closing slit on the front.

This Is A Mini Cast Iron Pan My Roommate Got As A Gift And He Was Complaining The Entire Time While Attempting To Clean It (And Rightfully So)
That's an old wives' tale - if your cast iron is seasoned properly, the seasoning is polymerized oil - the surfactants in soap can't wash it off.
Load More Replies...You dont clean cast iron with soap!!!!! Might as well bury the thing. For those wondering it ruins the pan and will cause rust.
OK, if you are going to bake something in this, first put oil or butter in it, put it in the oven until the butter melts and THEN pour in the batter. The batter will "fry" in the oil and NOT stick to the pan. I do this when I bake cakes and the cake NEVER sticks to the pan. BUT you NEVER use soap on an iron pan UNLESS you season it again. When I use my iron frying pan, I pour out the grease, use the spatula to remove anything "stuck", and then wipe it with paper towels until totally "dry" and put it in a hot oven, leave it for about ten minutes. Turn off the heat and leave it until it cools. Take it out and wipe it down again and voila, clean and sanitary.
Use a scrub brush and hot water. That's all you need. Put it on a hot stove until it's dry ~2 min.

It's quartz. One of the hardest natural substances. You can just put it under water (it will not rust nor dissolve) and clean with a brush if needed.
Citrine, technically, but yes. 99% of crystals can just be run under water unless it's gypsum or some form of gypsum

Easy - fingernail brush and a drop of Dawn Dish soap....Hot water....will clean up to a sparkle !
No Photos Posted Of The Inside, But I Imagine This Would Be A Nightmare To Clean Out
or just a tap of dishwashing detergent and water inside - close the lid - SHAKE IT - clean water - done!

google *horn coffee mug* it's fantastic, i want one too 😻 and one with horns, false horns too...
Load More Replies...Could be just a regular white mug inside a fancy holder that lifts out to wash. In that case the white bottom part would be false.
When you get tired of it, cut it in half lengthwise and mail it to John Noble.
O My
No, it's not. This spiral will be harder than most hollow stems, especially if the bowl screen fails.
Load More Replies...These are easy! Soapy hot water & shake. Same as the rest. Get pipe cleaners for the harder spots but once its all warm, it comes right out
I have cleaned many grungy pipes before & had 3 or 4 over the years like were curved just like that. I never liked alcohol to clean them. It leaves an after taste, in my opinion, ever after repeated rinsing. I used to use oxiclean powder for a bit since it didnt leave residue but have moved on from glass bowls. Too many people have broken way too many on me. I use silicone now. Its easier to clean & cheaper to replace if needed. Plus i can have hubs use the air pressure hose at work to clean the hard to reach areas...but yeah, boiling hot water, dish soap, pipe cleaners, & some spare time was all i did for a long time. Never had an issue. Most times, a low boil would clean most of the twirls before i even needed the pipe cleaner

They make really good and expensive donuts. A donut is a few bucks.

"The magic is in the hole" is a pretty questionable slogan anyways.
If You Even Tried Dusting This It’d Rip The Duster And Ur Hand Apart
Actually selenite is water soluble, it'll dissolve if you get it wet.
Load More Replies...bruh selenite is like one of the SOFTEST effing minerals in the world so why the frick would you want smth like that?

Broom Broom Broom Broom I Want You In My Room
In most jurisdictions there are building laws against this type of stair design.
LOL the caption. I love that stupid song. Boom boom boom boom. I want you in my room. Let's spend the night together. From now until forever. Boom boom boom boom. I wanna go boom boom. Let's spend the night together. Together in my room.
Where is this place? There's a few people I wouldn't mind having convenient "accidents". 🤔
So since covid, I have learned most people don't clean, or don't know how to clean nor disinfect. So not something considered when purchasing
No one desinfects everything because we cannot live in a sterile environment. We need lots of them bugs to stay healthy. On the other hand I one saw a class mate of my then preschooler with the same reusable drinking bottle as my kid. It had actual fungus in the mouth piece... It's not just not knowinghow to clean, it's more the not getting what is dangerous and what parts are more important to clean... Like drinking bottles...
Load More Replies...Most of this stuff is no worse than carpet in general and most reusable water bottles.
Some of these were good, some...wow. if you're going to get certain things, please learn how to keep them clean so as to not get sick.
