There are two things that you have to know about me. First of all, I am a huge fan of nature and I utterly love wildlife. And secondly… I am a truly terrible gardener. Frankly, just awful. If I were born a Hobbit, I’d have been kicked out of the Shire to wander the lonely trails of Middle Earth long, long ago. However, I hope to get better.
One of the most inspiring places online for gardeners everywhere, both amateur and veteran alike, is the r/gardening subreddit. It’s a community that has sunk its roots deep into the internet, having grown to nearly 4 million members since being planted all the way back in the spring of 2008.
We’ve collected some of the most impressive photos from gardens, as shared by the friendly folks of r/gardening, all to make you smile and inspire you to give gardening a shot as well, dear Pandas. These pics would make any Hobbit proud, that’s for sure. Be sure to pick out your fave photos and give them an upvote as you’re climbing down this long vine of a list. Oh, and if you’ve got a green thumb (or two!), you can tell us all about your love of gardening in the comments.
Bored Panda reached out to the moderators of r/gardening to learn a bit more about the community and its popularity. One of them, with over a decade of experience moderating the subreddit, had some great news for those of us who have trouble with plants. "There is no such thing as a green thumb or a black thumb. Anybody can grow plants. Just a little bit of attention paid will yield results," they said that everyone is fully capable of becoming a gardener. And the subreddit is there to help in case you need it.

I’ve Been Playing Words With Friends With A 75 Year Old Great Grandma From Idaho For Over Three Years But Have Never Met Her In Person. She Sent Me The Most Amazing Wedding Gift!
I would absolutely love that. And then I would give the seeds to a green fingered friend, and ask her to grow them for me. Because the only thing I can grow from seed is weeds
Awww🥰 I had two different elderly neighbors who would give me plants. When the one passed his friends had a celebration of life and had seed packets made up for everyone. It was the sweetest thing. I think it's a great wedding memento too!
Since they are probably all heirlooms you will be able to pass it forward for many people in future. Her gift is wonderful.
Wow 👏 I love growing things with seeds you never know what you're gonna get ❤
I've been checking the labels; that gives me a better idea of what will happen. 😉😊😁
Load More Replies...I have loads of bags of seeds like this from my day. About half of them are not labeled, so it should be fun seeing what pops up.
The moderator, who preferred to remain anonymous, was kind enough to share with Bored Panda how they first got started helping manage the community. "I started modding on /r/gardening after I asked the [head] moderator about a post not appearing or something, and he offered me a moderator position," they opened up about how the founder of the online group got them involved further.
At the time, more than a decade ago, the subreddit was but a seedling, having around 50k members. "We've had a constant stream of great contributors, along with dedicated moderators over the years, which has served the sub well," the mod praised their colleagues and community members.
According to the moderator, the vast popularity of r/gardening is all down to the wholesome members of the online community. The mod was very humble and said that the huge number of subscribers isn't their achievement, "it's the good nature of the gardening community that makes people sub and stick around."

A Local Gardener And Her Massive Rhododendron!
Wow! I wonder how many years she's been tending it, it's huge and absolutely beautiful!
I think nature will have taken over tending this years ago.
Load More Replies...WOW! You know there's gotta be a nice space inside/underneath that Rhododendron! (I don't care that I'm 47; sitting under the bushes and trees and hiding from everything is such a lovely way to spend one's time when the weather is nice!)
Nothing can grow under it. It's just a giant toxic Bush. All that's underneath is more bush
Load More Replies...These bushes are toxic to animals in every possible way. They can become toxic to us too if they were to catch on fire. Their fumes would kill us
Load More Replies...This woman planted this tree 100 years ago when she was 6 years old.
Despite all the popularity, the subreddit chooses not to be in the limelight. "We have, by choice, never been a front-page (default) subreddit, so subs here are not accidental," the moderator explained that most of those joining the community have an active interest in gardening. "As mods, we've always had a tough but fair policy on user conduct—like all gardeners have to keep the weeds at bay from time to time."
If you're ever in need of some help, you can always make a post on r/gardening with some pictures, asking for advice. Or you can tune into the weekly 'Friendly Friday' threads with a question or two.
The ‘Gardening’ subreddit has just three simple rules that you’ll need to abide by if you want to grow into a fully-fledged member of their community. Firstly, they’re very tough when it comes to advertising and self-promotions: they won’t tolerate any of that business, so remember to stay humble. It’s not about you, or your business, it’s about the gardens, the plants, the agriculture.
I Guess I Mistakenly Planted My Tomato Right Next To Where I’d Sown Some Bunny Seeds
I never knew bunnies came from seeds. I learn something new every day.
Better there than in the lawn where you can't see them. Rabbits den so shallowly that I know several people who narrowly avoided running them over with the lawnmower.

Incorporating The Rain Into Your Garden
So serene looking. I've been trying to get my mom to do something like this!
I hope there's adequate drainage. Otherwise, you're just breeding mosquitos.
Yes, it's pretty, but I'm very confused about where this water is draining or if it's just standing water in the yard until it dries up...
Load More Replies...Needs some fairy castles and stuff on the ground side..because hey, there's a moat!
I think the issue of a drain pipe and gutter has just been fixed, I couldn't think of any way to take care of the problem without simply burying it.
Hit enter too soon. It's been an issue for the past 4 years, and it's in a weird spot, but this might be the perfect inspiration!
Load More Replies...Does this have pvc pipe underneath? Like a French drain? I'd love to have more information. I want to do this to redirect water away from my house. My land slightly slopes toward my house. This would serve a purpose and look beautiful. This is lovely. Thanks for the inspiration.
French drain-type system. Look up "rain gardens."
Load More Replies...I need to do this as my front yard turns into a LAKE when it rains hard.
Pretty but I'm not sure if it's steering the water away enough from the house. I mean it looks more like a pond than a stream and water is sitting right under the gutter, very near the corner of the house. Of course I could be wrong and I have no idea how that is built.
I really love how they phrased their second rule: “No Trolls in the Garden.” It’s all self-explanatory. Be a decent human being. Don’t harass others. And don’t post any abusive or offensive content.
Their third and final rule is about avoiding reposts. You shouldn’t be farming karma on Reddit, you should be posting quality content for its own sake. “ If you are going to repost something, it should be for the sake of learning new things, cross-posting, or bringing up a question asked previously on this sub for advice,” the subreddit’s moderators point out that education should be at the forefront of their members’ minds, not giving their social reputation a boost.

I think it looks great. I’m sure all the bugs in the neighborhood agree with me.
You can plant specific plants that draw specific bugs...like ladybugs, which will then eat the aphids on your roses.
Load More Replies...That's so awesome! I'd love to just go curl up in there with a good book. I wonder if you could do this with tomatoes... maybe not such a great idea since I'd just stay in there eating tomatoes. Fortunately, my husband isn't fond of tomatoes!
The subreddit’s moderators have also done a wonderful job when it comes to sharing resources. For example, in their sidebar they’ve listed the plant hardiness zone maps for every major region in the world. Plant hardiness helps determine how well plants tolerate the coldest temperatures in each zone. It’s incredibly useful for gardeners the world over.

I've got those in our garden! Absolutely love them and yes, they are easy to grow.
Stunning colours, decided to find out what they are and they look like African Daisies purple sun variety. Hopefully easy to grow and find coz I wanna try plant some.

What’s more, the online community has links to all the other subreddits, large and small, that are related to gardening. From Reddit’s edible and indoor gardening communities to plant-specific subreddits, advice-focused groups, and ones specifically for buying, trading, and selling plants and seeds. It might sound overwhelming at first, but think of it as a library that has separate sections for everything gardening-related. Or as good friends referring to their pals for specific advice.

Acidic soil turns hydrangeas pink, alkaline soil turns them blue. I'm guessing she adds aluminum sulfate to part of the bush and lime to part of it to get the mix.
a small correction re: lime & acid in soil. Lime ( sweet' soil ) turns blooms pink, acidic soil produces blue blooms. :-) We've grown these 'mop-head' hydrangeas for decades, in 3 different states. I spent yrs. working in plant nurseries & learned a lot back then. We used to save coffee grounds to add around the roots, to help blooms turn blue. It really works.

This Beautiful Two Toned Rose In My Garden
There’s two different options that I know of for how it may have happened. The first is when you put a rose into colored water, it becomes the color of the water, you can split the stem of the rose to do multiple colors, (I believe, I only briefly stumbled by this experiment). The second option is called codominance, which is when one allele of a color is not dominant over another in a specie’s DNA, so both alleles are expressed.

"It’s great to see photos of frogs in people’s gardens or that they’ve seen on a walk. We know this often creates a deeper interest in amphibians and their conservation and we love to see them—so long as the animals aren’t disturbed too much of course!" Dr. Wilkinson told Bored Panda.

Load More Replies...One of my friends is a teacher in primary school. She told me they had to fix something in the playground, so there was a work area where children were not allowed to go play, and obviously, the first thing the kids did was to trespass and start playing with the dirt. But instead of scolding them, my friend just went to see what they were actually doing. She found out they were amazed at observing some plants that were randomly starting to grow there - this is in a big city where many children from poor neighbourhoods have barely any contact with nature. So she proposed that the class actively study what was happening there, find out how the plants work so they could help them grow... and all in all, the kids were rather enthusiastic at this project they had basically initiated by themselves.
According to the expert from ARC, some of the main things that we can do in our gardens to make them more friendly for the local wildlife include setting up a garden pond and not using chemicals. The pond, especially, is the “single most important thing you can do for garden life.”

I've got a massive passion flower growing the whole side of our storage shed, about 20 metres long. A local priest came in and asked if he could give a talk to his congregation in front of it, I said 'why the hell not'. He told me the 3 stigma represent the 3 nails pinning Jesus to the cross, the corona represents the crown of thorns, the petals and sepals are the apostles faithful to Jesus, and the Anthers are the 5 wounds He suffered on the cross. I (Atheist) just said, 'I hear eating them reduces Stress, anxiety and ADHD! You should start with that in your talk'.

My Dad’s (74yo) Garden Is Looking Particularly Lovely This Morning. He Does All The Planning And Gardening Himself
"Climate change can be a very negative factor for frogs, toads, and newts. Ponds can dry up too quickly, meaning their tadpoles don’t have enough time to develop. Also, warmer winters affect hibernating frogs. They use more energy during hibernation and partially wake up, meaning they are in poorer condition for breeding. This is particularly hard on the females who put a lot of energy into making eggs (spawn)," Dr. Wilkinson warned how climate change is affecting various animals, stressing the need for all of us with gardens to give them a helping hand.
The Guy In The Image Collects Lost Apple Varieties
Johnny Appleseed was a real person who bought up land in the opening western territories of Ohio, Kentucky. and Illinois and planted large groves of apples trees. Why, you ask. Because he knew that people would be moving west and those people would get thirsty and in the early 1800s the drink of choice for adults wasn't beer or hard spirits it was hard cider. There is a 'museum' of heirloom apples I think in W. Virginia (there are a bunch of heirloom orchards across the US) that has thousands of varieties. Apples are outcrossed so the seed from the apple will not produce the same tree or apple variety as its parent. All of the heirloom varieties are grafted plants. Finally the only true North American apple variety is the crabapple. There will be a quiz on this next Friday! You've been warned.
This is one reason we have so many apple varieties in the US. Out of millions of apple trees planted from seed, every now and then one of them was really delicious for eating, and we propagated it further via grafting. The others didn't taste as great, but when you're making cider it doesn't matter as much.
Load More Replies...I have a 70-year-old apple tree in my backyard that is some sort of lost variety. Not a single apple grower has been able to identify the variety (and I live in Washington State, where they've seen a lot of apple varieties). Lovely garden. I'm a little confused as to why hubby said you could build this to keep you busy. Did you feel like you had to get his permission first? That's not good. Consult with him beforehand sure, make sure he doesn't want to use that part of the yard for something else but feeling like you need his permission before you do this is not ideal. Maybe I'm interpreting it wrong and feeling like she (?) isn't a very good feminist and is stuck in some antiquated marriage roles that aren't healthy. For a family of 4, eating let's say 1kg/2-3 days, means 25$/month, 100$/4 month. And not saying that in eastern european countries, we also make juice and tomato sauces (you need at least 50-80 kilos) to pass the winter. So, yeah, it's pretty comfortable to cultivate them
