They really are. Seeing the skill of some people with ASD makes me feel ashamed of myself for some reason. I have autism and I feel like I need to be smart; I'm not though. :(
Load More Replies...My sibling is autistic. He is a huge movie nerd and could tell you the cast of any Pixar movie 😅 Autism can be amazing ❤️
Thank you for saying that! My only grandson was just recently diagnosed with "being mildly on the spectrum" & of course my mind went to all sorts of places worrying about him, however, I have since learned it may not be a disability at all. It may be a good thing or at the least not as bad/defining as I once thought. I look forward to seeing where his unique-ness takes him...
Load More Replies...This is the unfair thing about autism. I am also autistic and have no visual memory of any kind. I have a brain defect in the way I see things, and can't remember what I've seen unless I see an actual picture of it. I did not get the cool brand of autism where I have mad talent like this.
He drew a skyline with only 1 helicopter flight and it was extremely realistic
Talk about having excellent eyes on details. His works are phenomenal.
How is it cold enough to keep the ice frozen, But also warm enough that the apple itself doesn't freeze?
I have yet to see those, but did have snow rollers at my house, and throughout my home town one year. Those were strange to see! They were everywhere.
Bored Panda has reached out to the founder of the account, Amit Baghel, to learn more about the project and the inspiration behind it. He told us that the journey of Fact Point began in 2014 when he regularly started posting short snippets describing interesting, little-known facts on social media.
Amit admitted that he loved to read about the fascinating tidbits of knowledge—and the more obscure they were, the better. “I would collect articles on facts like others would collect coins or stamps,” he said.
Initially, Amit managed his hobby alone by posting short extracts from the information he read online. “Later on, my brother Sandeep Baghel also started assisting me with social media strategy ideas and suitable graphics,” he revealed. “With consistent posting over time, backed up by some canny research into our audience’s preferences, the accounts grew quickly across platforms.”
Come on we all needed another adorable otter fact
Load More Replies...SEE! Even otters can have pockets! Can us women get pockets now!!!
we should get pockets but i rather not have them in our skin
Load More Replies...Presumably this is the origin of the phrase "wetter than an otter's pocket".
Specifically sea otters. River otter do not have them, but that's because sea otters live in the ocean, and if they drop their rock it can disappear into the depths. They also hold hands when they sleep, so they don't float away from each other.
The rats aren't really drowning, just stuck in water. They are literally 100% safe and unharmed. Then their friend rescues them and shares chocolate.
Load More Replies...So stop calling people dirty rats! They are quite clean and nicer than way too many humans I've met
My ratties were the best... such intelligent and loving creatures!
To everyone saying this is animal cruelty: it is not, the rats were not in any danger, they were not drowning, just stuck in water, there was a podcast made about the experiment a few weeks ago: https://open.spotify.com/episode/3olHsFBu9yz9lPntf1KzvV?si=m4BNnC5pTamxGIrQLLlfsg
The intelligence of rats has been well established, and now empathy is demonstrated as well. Our sons loved rats as pets, the domesticated variety. We found them not only bright and cuddly but they keep themselves clean and silky, and were attached to their owners. I assume and hope the testers did not let any of them drown when others were given the choices. It was hard for me to change my opinion of domesticated rats, but I'm so glad our son insisted. The are delightful, affectionate pets.

and yet humans don't even check on a neighbor when they see the mail piling up and no one's heard from them in 2 weeks....
But yes, we should check on our neighbors

“After managing Fact Point successfully on Twitter, we started a page on Instagram with infographics dedicated to facts,” he said. The content they post is unique and verified with multiple credible sources before publishing. “This has solidified the presence on the platform and turned it into one of the biggest communities for inquisitive minds on Instagram.”
I'm sure there was a mouse in the Garfield comics with whom he had the same arrangement
Uh- uh, crap what was the mouses name! It's driving me mad now
Load More Replies...Aww! this is adorable to think that I watched tom and jerry for ages and never realized...
I was always confused about their relationship because i remember that in half episodes they were friends and in the other half they were enemies
Load More Replies...In some episodes, yes. But the premise of different episodes vary. There are plenty with no owner interactions at all. Or the ones where the dog protects Jerry. Or Jerry just wants to ruin Toms chances with the female cat.
I'm in martial arts and when I throw my opponent, depending on the throw, how low my center of gravity is, angle, opponent's weight etc. sometimes I send them in a higher velocity than I intend to. I usually feel it as it's happening too, and I go "sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry" as they tumble in the air and land and my instructors often threaten me with push-ups... Because well, it's ridiculous, I just threw a person and I'm going "sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry"
The part about this being the law is true in several Canadian provinces, but not because Canadians say sorry so much. (There are similar laws many U.S. States, also). They exist to protect people who make statements of sympathy, etc. to victims of accidents or crimes. The "Canadian sorry" is very context specific and really means something like "it's all good" or "no offence taken" when a minor mishap occurs between strangers. Probably not relevant to most court cases, and in Canada we all know damn well it isn't an admission of fault, anyway. Oh, and the 2009 date only refers to Ontario, not the whole of Canada.
They had to change that in America too. At least where I live. Many people say sorry first thing after a car accident no matter whose fault it was.
The only people who say "sorry" more than Canadians are husbands ...ba dum tssh!
I’ve literally been asked if I’m Canadian because I apologize so much… nah man, I’m just emotionally messed up lol
The ending was happy what about the beginning and middle - bet he could have used some coaching then!
Load More Replies...When the founder noticed that people were eager to learn new fascinating things about the world and their community started quickly growing, they spread onto other platforms. They created a new Facebook page and then launched a YouTube channel.
“During the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown, we also started a YouTube channel for Hindi-speaking users from our home country.” And it seems there are even more plans ahead since Amit revealed that they plan to launch a website and a mobile app quite soon.
When asked why so many people enjoy learning new facts, the creator revealed that it’s always useful to discover new things. “We believe that the more knowledge we gather about the world around us, the greater is our understanding of our place in the Universe.”
You know I think if somethin is invented for people with disabilities the company who designed it should automatically send them to places where the persons with that specific disability can learn from it - like blind schools! FREE!!!!!!!!!!!
Opens a totally new perspective to gaming. Why isnt this evolving into newer gaming consoles?
In China's case it's all monoculture plantations so there's no biodiversity. Don't know about India
Well, the same thing was done in Germany a long time ago and this problem is slowly being fixed over decades. Reforresting is a start. Diversity will come later because, apparently, it is impossible for countries to learn from other countries mistakes. -_- Still, a start.
Load More Replies...We're gonna need that to make up for Brazil burning down half the Amazon rain forest.
Worry about the plankton in the ocean, it recycles far more CO2, than the supposed, "Lungs of the planet."
Load More Replies...These are likely just artificial tree fields which will never get a chance to grow into a real forest, with all the biodiversity and the capacity to resist climate change and other environmental issues. Besides, while these new plantations are still growing, China is actually pillaging forests in the rest of the world to maintain its heavy wood industry. So, not as a good news at it seems, unfortunately.
We made mistakes, corrected them and we're marching ahead with a greener, fresher world
This is a general, overall increase in trees being planted. Governments understand now that trees are good. Johannesburg and the surrounding cities and counties is the world's largest artificial forest and the largest metropolitan area with the highest number of cars with the lowest CO2 air concentration for such a megacity.
I read about this. China planted them to stop the advance of the desert.
I would say most of the time, not. Not rewarding...that is.
Load More Replies...This is lovely, and he should be commended. AND we should also not always wait for homeless people to "demonstrate" their humanity and honesty before we help them. ALL PEOPLE deserve to live safely. ALL PEOPLE deserve a home. ALL PEOPLE deserve the basics of life. Because they are human, not because they returned a ring or saved someone from a fire or otherwise "proved" their worth.
His was also able to reconnect with his family, whom he had lost track of for 16 years.
This was in Kansas City. I used to see this guy all the time. I would give him money mostly because the shopping district hired security guards to stand nearby and 'advise' you not to. This was after they got sued for forcing the homeless off of what was, after all, a public street
I'm glad he did the right thing, but if anyone thinks a homeless guy is going to be able to sell or p**n a $4,000 ring without getting reported or arrested, they have an unrealistic view of the world.
Thought the same thing. Maybe it slipped off while her hand was in the cup?

“Factual information on any subject is crucial for our existence in this world,” he continued. “If our perceptions about the world are based on false premises, it is obvious that we shall have a hard time preserving life and happiness.”
“In this era of fake news, we feel that our audience supports us because we go to great pains to ensure that the information we post is verifiably and justifiably factual in nature,” Amit added. They set up another account on Tumblr “where details of our sources are openly displayed for anyone to inspect and dispute if it can be proven to be mistaken or inaccurate.”
While I agree with this, I see it in a more practical sense. Instead of having bookshelves full of books (I have three large ones), I can continue to get more on my kindle, with out adding to my clutter.
Load More Replies...All the hate for ebooks. Reading is the important thing and I support whatever method you use to do so. I loved paper books but can no longer afford a home big enough to have them. An e reader makes it possible to have thousands of books regardless of space. And the digital library access has been a lifesaver during the pandemic with various library closures. You do you - but there’s not a “better” way to read, just a preference. It’s okay to have a preference, and even better to be open minded.
It’s also not like it has either or. I prefer print books but I also read e-books. But I solve the lack of space problem with print by borrowing from my local library.
Load More Replies...Paper books are beyond me. I have my entire library in my pocket. No trees need to be cut, no dust-gathering, space consuming books on shelves and I can read anyplace, anytime I want, day or night.
And I can change the font size on my ereader! My aging eyes can't deal with the tiny print used in many paperbacks.
Load More Replies...I moved to a different state and had to leave my fairly large collection of paper books behind. I just didn't have room for them, either in the moving truck or in my much smaller new place. Now I take my entire library with me everywhere I go,
I think the one interesting fact about paper and e-books is how they are constantly played off against each other like there's some sort of silent war going on. I love my Kindle for the convenience but nothing beats a big fat heavy book to dig into afresh and as much as I love reading stuff digitally, big glossy movie art books just don't work as well on a digital device
As it should because it costs the library a whole lot more for ebooks. Ebooks are actually horrible for libraries because publishers screw them over on it. So support paper copies from your local library.
If you buy something you own it, and if you own it you should be able to loan it to others as often as you like.
Load More Replies...I just wish my arthritic thumbs could deal with the weight of a hard cover book. My kindle sits in a holder and I tap the page with a stylus to turn it. No more hand pain, and I can read any time I want.
I think the e-book thing is kind of a niche market nowadays, it only appeals to the big readers who are tired of managing big libraries. Stocking all the Book you actually reads can take a lot of Space. Its a burden to keep them clean. I just donated three full plastic bags of books I loved to read but had no utility to keep after, they were mostly novels. I have one e-book because i only keep my favorite paper books on my shelves, and want to find easely the one i'm looking for. It's the best when you travel and are not sure if you will read a lot or not, it offers way more choice with way less space and mostly, weight. I love my e-book and am grateful of it's practicity, but i will always prefer reading on a real book, smelling it, touching it and turning the pages is so relaxing and reassuring.
Its that feeling when you get to see AND feel the progress on paper books for me😊
I disagree. My IQ is considered genius-level (just barely, but it qualifies) and I spend WAY too much time worrying about what others think of me. There are a lot of factors that go into that need for approval. Childhood can trump smarts every time. Every. Time.
Can I just clarify if you worry AND get peer pressured, or just worry? My IQ is also quite high and my first thought was 'this must be nonsense' then I realised that while I worried about what people thought a lot I also don't give in to peer pressure at all when I disagree with something
Load More Replies...Only a moron thinks they're the smartest person in the room. A genius understands there is much to be learned.
Oh, come on! You can be, and sometimes most likely are, the smartest person in the room. Saying it out loud if you are asked is stating a fact, not being arrogant or bragging. Smart people have to stop trying to be humble and own their intellectual prowess, because the stupid don't stay quiet and are getting the leading jobs and fůcking up the world.
Load More Replies...My husband must be out of this world genius - the dude gives absolutely zero f***s about what folk think of him

This is a misrepresentation of the data. The study showed that people with higher EMOTIONAL intelligence resisted peer pressure, not "higher IQ".

Bet loads of Bored Pandas do that too😉. I do, especially with bread or chips. If its a chip butty then my songs become operatic.
I tend to bounce my leg if I'm eating something particularly good. My family know this si much that, as adults, my brother (whom is 10 years older then me) and I went camping and he made us breakfast. I was bouncing my leg while eating and he said "it must be good, huh?" and I said "yeah, how'd you know?" and he said I was bouncing my leg like I did as a small child.

You are right, the Greek word for joy is "chara" and even so it is the root word for "cheraphobia". Thing is there is no explanation for why the changed to "chera" and now I'm dying of curiosity 🤣🤣🤣
Load More Replies...I do this! I rein myself in if I feel too good about how things are going. Or if Im too proud of myself. Because Im convinced it causes things to go to s**t at a later date.
I don't know if I'd use the word 'afraid', but I definitely grow uncomfortable. I've had depression my whole life, and anxiety, and these all just seem to go hand-in-hand.
"For life" was a show life this - wrongly convicted guy in prison who's learning law and using that to help other inmates while working on his own case - loosely vases on the true story is Isaac wright jr - I watched it in a day when I was poorly and really enjoyed it.
Load More Replies...Oh, definitely. And in some places, race plays a huge part in that. It's why you can't really put all your trust in crime statistics.
Load More Replies...Josh Dubin did the same thing. There's a great Joe Rogan episode with him and it's incredible. It's what has inspired me to go to law school at 29 years old. I want to work with the innocence project or atleast with people who have been wrongfully convicted. It's incredible work these people do. The only way to reform our system is to get people to realize how flawed it is.
The Innocence Project is sadly overwhelmed with people needing help. I encourage you to pursue this goal, as they need people like you.👍

Load More Replies...The Asian nations that border the ocean and have elephants all navy/coast guard divisions to rescue them. Elephants are some of the best swimmers in the world but sometimes an elephant goes for a swim in the ocean, gets out of sight of land, then starts swimming circles because they are lost. Most of the time, they just send a couple small boats with ropes and the elephant will follow back to the beach. India has a helicopter/flatboat situation to getting one back if necessary. The other navies can buoy the elephant up until they arrive. Elephants can get far enough out they'd die of exhaustion trying to get back. Here's one from Sri Lanka. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DrSE4IRrCwI
Everybody's seen that fuzzy old black and white photo of the Loch Ness Monster. Traveling circuses used to stop at Drumnadrochit and let the elephants go skinny dipping, so there's a possibility that it's just a picture of an elephant's trunk. Tigers are very good swimmers too. If they get driven away from their mainland habitat, they can swim a few miles to an island and set up a new home.
No, there's no possibility that photo was an elephant. The son of the man who took the photo eventually told how they did it.
Load More Replies...Not only do they have good memory, but also excellent swimmers. A whole lot better than me, that's for sure. lol
Well, this isn't quite fair on the mosquito. The mosquito isn't killing anyone itself, it is transmitting a disease. By that rationale, humans should carry the can for all human-to-human transmitted diseases, on top of murders, wars, car accidents etc., bringing their total into the millions.
I think sticking a pathogen filled stinger in someone's vein entails more agency than coughing.
Load More Replies...Whoa, that sounds really scary. But not as scary as me finally snapping after a mosquito buzzed in my ear all night. Mocking me in that melody "bzz bzz-bzz bzz-bzz bzz!" 😩🧐
Load More Replies...I've never understood the comparison to deaths by sharks. Humans don't live under water, hence obviously the chances to get killed by a shark are not that high. I get that they probably do this to try and change the negative perception towards this sort of animal, but it's like comparing apples with oranges.
Ever hear of a beach? Just in Florida people get close to sharks thousands of time each day.
Load More Replies...First thing I thought of too. Their yearly kills are estimated to be between 500 to 3000 humans, depending on the area and rate of the kills being reported.
Load More Replies...the mosquito is just a vector. the malaria disease in itself kills millions, not the mosquito
Sheer numbers in proximity to humans, is the reason. E.g. Australia: 1/Dogs, 2/Horses, 3/Cattle -- not spiders, sharks, snakes.
Load More Replies...A cat that stops purring can sometimes create new wounds, though.
Load More Replies...I can vouch for this. After decades of major depressive disorder, suicide attempts, and countless medications, a psychotherapist of mine recommended getting an emotional support animal. The veterinarian my mom takes her dog to heard I was looking for a rescue animal and he in turn found a 6 month old Labradoodle at the animal shelter, bought her, got her groomed, and spayed her then gave her to me. She's helped improve and control my depression significantly. She's the best thing to happen to me since my son's birth.
I'm telling you the truth, I like to hold a purring cat even for no medical reasons :-)
I watched the vid, not only she performed wonderfully, she had a perfect landing, as well. Bravo!
And great legs! I want to be her when I grow up.
Load More Replies...Age may be only a number, but arthritis can't count anyway. I figure if something doesn't kill me by seventy and there are no medical breakthroughs, the pain will be more than I'm willing to put up with anymore.

In Germany, when a holiday falls between a workday and the weekend, say Thursday or Tuesday are the holidays, then the Fryday/Monday are holidays too. "Brückentage", bridge days, is the name of this. The whole thing is called "verlängertes Wochenende", enlonged weekend. And in Scandinavia, if a holiday falls on a weekend, it is free the next Monday. This is so to give the people more free time.
Those Brueckentage are by no means holidays by law. It's up to the company to grant those and are usually taken off ones anual holiday allowance, albeit not always. To make things worse: in the UK (or Scandinavia as you said) you get the following Monday off automatically if a holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, but sadly not for us. So if, like in 2021, Christmas and Boxing day fall on a weekend, it's tough titties for us!
Load More Replies...Used to be a lot like that in France (we call it "faire le pont") but much less nowadays I'm afraid, due to that toxic work culture ("we don't work enough in that country") that's spreading around. Even kids have to catch up on school hours another day when there has been a holiday, which I find sad and unnecessary.
The US has moved a lot of national (not religious) holidays to the nearest Monday, so that--in theory--everybody gets a three-day weekend. In reality, unless you work at a bank or for the government, it's just another day.
I'm curently working in France for a UK organisation, we have both countries public holydays, plus the benefit of ''ponts'' ( ''bridge days'') Cumulated with ''weather hazard holydays'' ( we work outside, but never under the rain, snow, stores, heatwaves...) , the RTT ( time worked over maximum legal hours per week, 35h in France, is cumulated to make around 21 days off a year), adding the 5 weeks a year mandatory holydays ( plus we're given one more free day a year every five years as loyalty r****d) let's say it's quite a cool job🙂
In Canada if a legal holiday falls on a weekend, you get the following workday off....so say Dec 25 & 26 are weekends, you get the 27th and 28th off.
I think this is the same in most (western/westernised) countries… isn’t it?
Load More Replies...Well, that is because Japan is a civilised country compared to the USA.
In America, when a day falls on a national holiday, you generally still go to work. We're suckers.

Load More Replies...Supersmeller and supertaster here. I can't ESCAPE the smells. I can shower, then an hour later I can already smell the dirt and salt layer building on my skin. Really wish I didn't have this ability, it makes the world more unpleasant than pleasant. Imagine being able to smell if someone is on their period from across the room. I'm a woman and it still makes me gag.
My mum has a smell like that. When we were kids we were making fun of her that they can hire her if they ever run out of police dogs. If it’s any consolation her smell got weaker with age.

Load More Replies...That's nothing! There's a book called The American Tax System that NO ONE has solved to date
Fun fact: In November 2020 it was announced that comedian and crossword compiler John Finnemore had correctly solved the puzzle, doing so over a period of six months during the COVID-19 lockdown. Finnemore said: "The first time I had a look at it I quickly thought 'Oh this is just way beyond me.' The only way I'd even have a shot at it was if I were for some bizarre reason trapped in my own home for months on end, with nowhere to go and no-one to see. Unfortunately, the universe heard me". Ha!
Then why does my glass on honey have a "Best before" date on it that says 2022 instead of 4022?
In the U.S. food is required by law to carry an Best before date (Food Safety Commission). In the case of Honey, correctly it does not expire but because of the packaging it can look different after a period of time i.e. crystalize (that can be remedied). The other responses are correct, it is mainly to get you to throw it out and buy more.
Load More Replies...Wonder who drew the short straw on having to taste 3000 year old honey.
I bought a bottle of Himalayan Pink Salt today. It's supposed to be two hundred million years old. I just noticed the expiration date is March of 2023. Good thing they dug it up when they did.
It does not have an unlimited shelf life. It depends on how much water content it has, but it can accumulate germs and therefore spoil.
The germ part is why they don't recommend giving honey to children under the age of 1(in my country).

I thought this sounded like BS, so I googled it. Turns out there *was* a study that showed the brain is flooded with CSF during deep (non-REM) sleep, and while the researchers who discovered this think that it *might* have a flushing or cleaning effect, there still needs to be a lot more study/research to determine that for certain. Still, an interesting discovery: https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/deep-sleep-gives-your-brain-a-deep-clean1/
I respect you doing your own (additional) research on this! :D (I love science)

They are made of aluminium, and the metal is still worth more than the face value.
It costs a lot more than one cent to make an American penny. Time to get rid of them.
The cost of manufacturing them is irrelevant to whether to keep them,That 1 penny represents a set value that can be used indefinitely. Every piece of money is worth what we say it is because that's how its worth is determined - we say so. When we change our mind on that, inflation occurs. The minimal amount of copper in a penny isn't purchased once and made into a good. That penny represents a penny's worth of value in every trade. A pie can be $1 or $2 but $1 is worth $1. In a small town, that single penny may be used by the same person 100x so it was worth a $1 of purchasing power. Getting rid of them because the amount of worth they represent is a different argument. A penny used to buy a 1lb of sugar. It now buys ~1/2 teaspoon (7.3 g) of sugar. Do we need the ability to buy 1/2 tsp ?

Load More Replies...Wikipedia: Eigengrau (German for "intrinsic gray"), also called Eigenlicht (Dutch and German for "intrinsic light"), dark light, or brain gray, is the uniform dark gray background that many people report seeing in the absence of light. The term Eigenlicht dates back to the nineteenth century, but has rarely been used in recent scientific publications. Common scientific terms for the phenomenon include "visual noise" or "background adaptation". These terms arise due to the perception of an ever-changing field of tiny black and white dots seen in the phenomenon. Eigengrau is perceived as lighter than a black object in normal lighting conditions, because contrast is more important to the visual system than absolute brightness. For example, the night sky looks darker than Eigengrau because of the contrast provided by the stars.
It's not even a romance language. You fail at talking forever.

The beaches near Cabo San Lucas are one of their nesting grounds and they have federal troops patrolling the beaches 24/7. When a female lays some eggs, its seen by one of the people patrolling and they put up barriers around the nest to keep people out with a sign saying you can go to jail for crossing them. The troops keep the predators off them as well. A biologist is then brought in to estimate hatching time and probability and modifies the sign with that info. If the nest is likely to be a failure, they take the eggs to a hatchery and bring them back to the exact spot when they start to hatch (babies need to orient against the stars to lay eggs when its their turn). Its become a major tourist industry. You can go to scheduled release from a nursery or your hotel will tell you the eggs should hatch tonight at beach XXX so you can go watch. If a baby stops without reaching the sea in so many minutes it will die so the feds give the slow ones get a hand to the sea when its close.

So basically the rain started seven minutes before the first raindrop hits the ground
So if rain "started" right when the sun "stopped" we'd have one minute of rain before the world went black.
Load More Replies...Not even REMOTELY accurate. It depends on a number of various factors. Rain falling from low clouds can hit in seconds. Higher of course takes longer. Also, the raindrop can be lifted again and again by the currents. If this happens between different temperature grades then hail can be formed. Also, cross currents can take the drops many miles (or km) away from the original point of formation.
Its really dependent on many factors. Just considering radius, If the drops are larger, their mass allows a higher terminal velocity so it takes much less time. If its at the smallest end (10 microns) the velocity is ~1 cm/sec (.02 mph) AKA fog.
Surely the height at which the clouds are formed would influence this? If it said 'an average' of 7 minutes it might be believable.

Human sense of smell is quite poor compared to other animals, but it is still what triggers the primordial activity of our brain, like bonding with our mother and family right after birth. Most of its process is unconscious though.
The first time in 20 years that i ate lamb chops, the smell, the taste, made me cry, i felt overwhelmed with hapiness. i blabed for 2 straight hours about good childhood memories i had forgotten
That's one reason why people with chronic sinus problems tend to have mental health issues too.
Yeah, the smell of burning wood stoves reminds me of hiking on my own high up in Nepal's Himalayas. It still triggers a feeling of absolute bliss
I have no sense of smell (lost it about 10 years ago) and memories bring out the smell in my brain (I can feel the smell of a perfume without smelling them. Life is actually quite hard without being able to smell- I've eaten food that has gone bad, don't know if I smell ok, I might walk around dog sh*t on my shoes for hours etc.
My strongest olfactory memory was this : when I was 11, we were on a trip in France where my mother was born. As we arrived at my great grandmother's home, strolling in the small pedestrian pathway, I was suddenly overwhelmed with a very earthy, pungent smell, but also a strong sense of well-being and feeling loved. As we walked the rest of the way to the home, where I hadn't been since I was a toddler, someone opened the gate to the exterior stair landing which served as the entranceway to the troglodyte home. It was half carved in the limestone rock, half built on it, and the rooms didn't connect to one another directly, you had to go out, then in another room, all of it on 3 levels. The first room I stepped in was the kitchen, on the first floor. And there it was, the earthy, pungent aroma, almost moldy.
There's a smell at the beginning of fall that makes my heart sink; it reminds me of an unhappy time in my life.

I don't understand why everyone has a problem with nitrogen in chip bags. It prevents them from going stale before they're opened, and it protects them from damage during shipping and handling. If you think it "looks" deceptive, then just read the weight that is conveniently printed on the bag. In fact, most grocery stores will print the cost per unit of measurement on the shelf tag (ie. $1.00 / 100 g)
its nitrogen im pretty sure and its there to stop the crisps from getting soggy and stale, and also to not get crushed during transit
They have a lot of airto protect the chips, otherwise you would end up with crumbs during transportation and handling etc.
The air is to help protect the chips from being crushed during shipping.
Well, the whole "positive thinking" thing feels pretty agressive to me. There are plenty of objective and excellent reasons to be in a bad mood and embrace it, which means try to address the problems around you (job, family, politics...) rather than working on (and lying to) yourself to cope with them and end up in complete denial. Personal development, and all the business made with it, might just be a kind of powerful propaganda to persuade individuals that their problems are only self-related and have nothing to do with the context they live in, so that society as it works can pretend to have no issues and doesn't need to change anything.
In my opinion it is just another way of forcing people to learn how to pretend to be happy. People gets uncomfortable when they see a sad person so their instinct is to cover it up. Hence why most therapists dont help you with your feelings, just teach you how to pretend to be fine.

Load More Replies...It's not just women. The epigenetics of either partner can impact the Dna of their grandchildren. The Irish Potato Famine was the first time good records were kept for communities undergoing starvation. They did a study where they looked at which families had the least amount of food during the famine, and found connections in the Dna of their descendants that weren't present in the descendants of families who'd had more food. It's crazy to me that the things you do in life can be written into your genetics to the point that they can be passed on. Before I read this, I had always assumed DNA was sort of indelible.
I wonder if the subconscious fear of going hungry or running out of food is genetically imprinted due to famines. Having come from Ukrainian and Irish ancestors who may have gone through the Holodomor and potato famine, it could explain why it was so hard for me to gain weight growing up despite a very hearty appetite.

They don't do it because they're depraved, or irresponsible, but rather because they see it as the best or only way out of a no-win situation. (e.g. a birth control failure, rape or incest, problems that make it unlikely for the child to have a normal life or even live for long after birth, financial hardship, an abusive relationship, etc.) Furthermore, in places where this trope is in full effect, and abortion is highly restricted or not legal, it results in people determined to have one going to Back Alley Doctors or worse, doing it themselves at home. It also results in (or exacerbates) Honor-Related Abuse, Domestic Abuse, Teen Pregnancy, Parental Abandonment, and even people being imprisoned for having a miscarriage. - Funny haha cliché website.
We are vessels for our DNA. It is our DNA that is driven to reproduce.
Studies of dna confirm our population hit a "bottleneck" but 2000 is actually the minimum required to sustain a species. We got close to that but evidently not quite. And it's 2000 "breeding pairs" thats the minimum required so we must have had more numbers as they wouldn't have all been the right age/ health or in the right place.

@Lauren Caswell said It's coded in our genetics(and strangely it seems to be that it was a huge drop of mostly males! I don't know much on that tangent though). We went through a huge bottleneck and our gene pool dropped. We don't have much genetic variety, which is partly (if not largely) why if related humans breed then genetic defects arise quickly, whereas this is not the case for many other mammals (excepting those who's populations have had huge losses and/or are endangered) (THIS IS NOT MY COMMENT, I copied it off of a reply to the only other comment cuz I wanted a more positive top coment)

I think venting is different, but constant complaining makes you focus only on the negative stuff in your life, ignore the good moments, until you get to a point where you are constantly stressed because you can only see problems that need to be solved, and it snowballs from there. (I just came back from spending a week with a friend who's riding that particular hamster wheel, and this is my venting, which helps (so thank you), because being with her was exhausting. There's only half a body there. How much oxygen is getting to the brain when you have the entire body? My father passed away from a heart attack, he was on a ventilator 9 days before he passed. He had CPR performed on him for over 30 minutes. By the time his heart started beating again he had suffered brain death from lack of oxygen even though CPR was started within seconds. His neurologist explained that the essential organs receive approximately 20% of the oxygen circulating during CPR. So, with just half a body I would believe that the blood is being circulated that well but not so good with the entire body.

McDonald's should have a flag out front for when the shake or ice cream machine is down - flown at half mast.
Good idea, so you don't wait in line 15 minutes in the drive thru for nothing.
Load More Replies...I always just wonder why they don't redesign it to NOT take 4 hours to clean? Do all ice cream machines take this long?
There are lawsuits flying about this. Allegedly the machine's maker, Taylor, intentionally created flawed code so that the units "break down" so that they can profit from "repairing" them.
Exactly! Funny how the two guys that developed the software to "fix" the machines and kept them running had to sue McDonald's and Taylor because McDonald's told the franchises they were in breech of contract by using that 3rd party software (which kept the machines running... even through the cleaning cycle). It will be a few more months before a court decision is arrived at. Funny how Taylor also makes the machines for Burger King and Dairy Queen and those companies' machine don't break down like McDonald's does. Some hanky panky/kickbacks involved in there?

The machines aren't shut off with product in it. Broken machines also have to be emptied to be repaired. Now, you will say "I worked at this one McDonald's that didn't", and I'm not saying they did. Obviously not everyone follows the rules.
