Power Socket Type Guide
I'm still waiting for standardized clothing and shoe sizes.
Load More Replies...Ok but the brown one looks so happy. We should all aspire to be like him
This is not terribly useful as, with the exception of UK and Ireland, you can use the two-pin plug everywhere in Europe.
One simple adapter solves that though doesn't it??? 😕

This is my backpack on the first day of my trip. By day three I just stuff everything in random order and with excessive force.
I'm not even motivated enough to make it through this chart much less pack like this.
I start incredibly organised on my first day of backpacking and then it just ends up as a chaotic free for all where I stuff everything in random pockets and pull out random things I don't need like a magician. Ooooh, there's that bag of trail mix I've been looking for.
2 important rules: 1, water closest to your back, if you have other super heavy stuff then it should be there too but always remember water. 2, the 70-30 rule. 70% of weight on your hip, 30% on your shoulders (achieved by pulling the straps, not by organizing content)
Not my style. Sleeping bag, which is voluminous and very light, I put it on top. Boots, batteries, books, heavy stuff, on the bottom. Most backpacks have direct access to "A". And the "frequent items" described fit ok on the shoulder bands and belt.
Most Popular Tourist Scams To Avoid When Traveling
I fell for the shoe shiner scheme in Istanbul. Yet somehow, I don’t mind - it wasn’t too expensive and it’s always a great starting talking point when discussing tourist experiences.
If he had not said a price beforehand, why would you then pay?

"But it's already on your wrist" "yeah well, then i need to take it off", and i ripped it off, and handed it back.
Same happened to me in Milan. Some Africans came and just tried to put these on the wrists of some people in our group as a free gift, then they demanded money as a "donations to Africa"
Load More Replies..."usually a doll"? The Romans damn sure better not use their real infant on me. My first reaction when a baby is shoved at me is to throw my hands up in a "get that thing away from me!" gesture. Helped raise too many in my own family, and homosexuality makes damn sure I never gotta do that s**t again. I will watch that baby drop then sing "Bye Bye Baby".
It's Gypsies that fo it. I don't know about a baby being thrown, but I did see a guy being searched by a woman and about 8 kids. I must have a don't f**k with me look or just lucky since I never had an issue.

Oh don't tell me you actually fell for that one! Wow, so gullible. /s
Load More Replies...I feel like it would be really hard not to fall for the thrown baby one. It doesn't exactly give you time to think. Instincts tell you to catch something being thrown at you, especially a living thing!
Oy . . . The joke's on them because I can't catch to save my life.
Load More Replies...The beggars gang is huge. If you see any kid begging, give them food. Never ever give money. The money is mostly taken by the gang who sends these kids. Also, think before you give. Chances are there are many kids around who will swarm you. Also at times, there there ladies or teen girls carrying a baby with them and begging. Dead sure the kid is not related. Borrowed from someone for sympathy.
I've heard that if you give them something to eat, they pretend to get sick because of it. Even they vomit out blood(fake of course)...Then their other counterparts come there and start asking what have you given him, and they threaten to call the police. And finally, settle the whole thing by taking some compensation.

Load More Replies...I didn't see this one listed - receive incorrect change from a shop. Give them a 20 and receive change as if you gave them a 10. Apparently quite common in The Netherlands. A comedy show we went to see talked about it. And, I thought, "I did give that woman a 20!".
Try to do that at the Milan Centro baggage claim. Stood my ground and they relented
Load More Replies...In our country the scam is "your tyre is flat". That's to make you open your car window. The other is free hat. They chuck it in the car window then ask for money.
Traveling means something slightly different for everyone. For some, exploring foreign territory is an extremely fulfilling experience. It's an opportunity to visit another country, get acquainted and embrace a new culture, or simply take a much-needed break from reality and the never-ending responsibilities of everyday life. For others, however, leaving their comfort zone is filled with hesitation, stress, and fear of finding themselves in novel surroundings where they can get lost, be scammed, or even worse.
People aren’t born savvy travelers but rather build their skills throughout their years of on-the-road experience. But what if you haven’t had the chance to explore the world that much? It’s reasonable to feel overwhelmed and unsure of your abilities, but the digital world that we have at our fingertips offers an endless source of golden nuggets to arm us with knowledge before our next trip. Much like the charts and infographics you see in this list, gathering information gives us confidence and makes planning our vacation that much easier.
Different Electrical Outlets Per Countries
Denmark is among the happiest countries in the world and so are their sockets.
English/British one isn't quite correct in the fact that we have switches on our sockets as standard
In general, yes, we do, but you can get them without. They are also used in Cyprus and Malta.
Load More Replies...Parts of Africa, Bangladesh, India and Indonesia among some other places also use the British style plug (though more interchangeably throughout the countries/continent) iirc. Ireland also uses it.
not in all places. i'm from australia and i went to a couple of different cities in china and we had to either put in an adapter for some. but i can't account for all of China, this was just a few different places lol
Load More Replies...Some of these differences have a basis in the electricity supply. Some, like Australia and UK, have a 240 volt supply, and others (e.g. USA) have 110 volts. Some require a third 'earthing' pin, but others, esp, 110v, don't. UK plugs are bulky because the have fuses built into them. If you want a worldwide standard plug, you'll have to have a worldwide standard supply first.
Thanks for the info. I was not aware of the vast differences in our power supplies.

This also comes in handy if you're travelling by air. Always have one of these arrangements in your carry-on. That way - if your luggage is lost - at least you have *something* clean with you.
If your luggage is lost or delayed the airport is required to compensate you by law.

The Worst (And Safest) Countries For Solo Female Travel Based On The 50 Most Visited Destinations Around The World (2019)
I don‘t really understand how something like gender pay gap is relevant for tourists? they‘re not getting paid there.
It's probably more of an indication of attitudes towards women in that country.
Load More Replies...China is the only country marked as safe at night for women. One country. Sickening.
In my experience, having lived here for 12 years, there is not a lot of violent crime in China but various forms of fraud and misrepresentation are widespread. Usually perpetrated by seemingly respectable businesses and people.

Load More Replies...Walking alone at night is orange in Italy but yellow in India and Thailand? Mmmmk... I think it's too generalized. It depends on places, i guess. Italy is a country of small town and villages, where it's safe to walk alone at night. Big cities? Yes, some places are sketchy (certain neighborhoods, around the train stations) but the center is usually fine. Definitely not more dangerous than France or Germany, thank you.
There is more information in the full post. Surveyed women answered: "In the city or area where you live, do you feel safe walking alone at night?" There could be many reasons a woman might feel unsafe, even if their area is generally safe. And Italy wasn't in the top 10 worst countries in this case.

Load More Replies...Why tf is Belgium only a C+??? Also, women healthcare should be here, aka can you safely, easily and cheaply attend female-specific health needs, such as tampons, breastfeeding, doctors informed about female medication portions and abortions?
This chart makes no sense. It's not about female travel. It's seems more about crime stats against women who live in that country. Mexico is not a dangerous place for female travelers but there is a lot of violence towards female Mexican citizens
Travelled to Mexico city alone a few years ago and must say I didn't feel very comfortable walking alone on the street. Men stare at you in a very VERY intense way, and a man wanted to take a picture of me in a museum of all places. And I grew up in Buenos Aires which is definitely not free of problems, but I felt far more uncomfortable there
Load More Replies...Weird, unrelevant and misleading list..! Depends entirely on what and how you measure! This list doesn't say much about being a TOURIST. Change the title please!
At least the "safest" part - the 12 safest aren't even listed.
Load More Replies...That's because BP cut off the end of the list, as well as some extra information. Canada is relatively safe so it's ranked #42. Here's the full post: i2cmz6rcvga31-6.png
Megan Starr, who is originally from Virginia, US, agrees with this line of thinking. She is one of the founders of a travel blog called Megan & Aram that’s all about visiting Scandinavia, the Eastern bloc, and beyond. Living abroad for 12 years now, Megan is an avid traveler that has hit up many fascinating places on the globe and has collected quite the arsenal of handy little tricks to share with others.
"To be honest, I think charts and infographics about traveling are a fantastic resource for those who struggle with the layout of articles and blogs online," she told Bored Panda. "Human beings don't take the time to digest long-form info these days and many people don't have the time or attention span, so I think they are great."
Megan pointed out that they are also a helpful tool for adventurers who set out to explore new places. "I think these are great for people to print and use on the road," she said, adding that travelers can print out checklists, allergy charts, and other information they find useful.
Pre-Trip Checklist
This is great. But I'd say that several items on the week or two ahead list should be done at least a month ahead.
And it’ ends up being done one day before

If you have appliances that automatically draw water, you could do more harm than good (icemaker, water conditioner, certain types of water heaters, pool pumps, boilers, geothermal and underfloor heating). If you took a long hot shower and emptied the ice maker into a cooler on your way out, you might come home to multiple ruined pumps.
Also if you have a cat then how is the cat sitter supposed to give them water?!
Load More Replies...For Road trips, never, ever do all those checks right before traveling. That needs to happen a few weeks in advance. It quite common for things to go wrong shortly after topping up or repairing something on your vehicle. I've put over 500000 miles on my vehicles road tripping and I always do these checks a month in advance then drive that vehicle regularly. Also, having a motorclub membership, (AAA for example) is a huge help. If something goes wrong on the road you can get help easier. Plus, they usually offer discounts. Put your spare key, which should open the car but not turn it on, in magnet case underneath the vehicle so you can access it if you lock yourself out. A full use spare should never go on the outside of the vehicle, that can go inside the car somewhere.
Places Where Birthright Citizenship Is Based On Land And Places Where It Is Based On Blood
In the UK (since 1983) as a rule, three different factors will help to determine your nationality as an individual: The country where you were born. The nationality of your parents (or ancestors in some cases). Your date of birth (because of rule changes). https://www.theukrules.co.uk/rules/legal/citizenship/british-nationality/index.html
My sister was born in the UK in 1979 while our family was visiting for a year. Around 2000 she applied for (and got) a UK passport. No one in my family has a drop of British blood.

Moreover, the travel blogger agreed that some people can feel confused with the myriads of information about different travel destinations they find online or in real life. Coming across clever visual charts that present handy advice in a clear and efficient manner can instantly teach people how to travel smarter.
"Guidebooks are heavy to lug around and a simple checklist may be all one needs," she explained. "It is easy to carry and fold up in your purse or wallet and can be an incredibly useful resource! I also think having a list of important information (ingredient names in the local language, as an example) can help you take advantage of things despite the language barrier." Megan revealed she has previously used the kind of resources to detail that she has an allergy to a certain food herself, and assured us that it worked very well.
Airplane Etiquette
Please post this on the back page of inflight magazines. The people who need it the most are not the ones who ever see these infographics. Unbelievable how we need an infographic on what is basically common courtesy.
Unfortunately, courtesy is not so common these days in many places.

I will listen to a continuous loop of nails on a chalkboard just to drown out the *ticky-ticky* fake keyboard taps on a cell phone. What the hell is wrong with these people? Shut it off!! And while we're on the topic, this doesn't really apply for planes but turn down your notifications! If you're sitting in a quiet waiting room and the *ba-ding* of your notifications is going off constantly, and is so loud that it's actually distorting, you are a new level off awful person! For god’s sake exit row by row!!! If you’re in the back don’t try to rush up front!!! It only causes a logjam and makes exiting take twice as long for everyone!!!
Also. Get out of the way and wait your turn. If you need to stop when walking in the airport, or loading and unloading on the plane, get out of the way of everyone else. Load your stuff and sit down. Be ready to go when unloading or stay seated until others are out. And don't jump ahead when unloading. It's just rude and makes your look like a jerk.
Item #1 - a couple years ago, after a 9 hour surprise layover in LAX, when my kid consumed airport fried chicken strips, we finally got on the plane. Only to be trapped for 3 additional hours on the tarmac. I think about those people near the lavs, when my child's stomach rebelled against his food choice often. I sincerely apologize.
The dreaded chicken strips. My son ate these on vacation when he was four and almost died from salmonella poisoning. He makes jokes about it now as an adult, but it was very traumatic at the time. Spent a week in the hospital and had to be flown home as he was too weak to handle the drive.

Load More Replies...Germans will feed you, we're just annoyed if you show up at breakfast, lunch or dinnertime unannounced.
I like that the Vatican is circled. I'm definitely showing up at the Pope's house and asking for dinner
Load More Replies...This one also has already been posted and is mostly wrong.
I'm norwegian and I've never not given food to my guest, nor has any of my family done this to my knowledge. I'm raised to believe one should be ashamed of not feeding guests. My family always says "better too much than too little" about the amount of food made. That's the norm. I've never experienced otherwise. (With one exception, and the friendship soured because of it and similar incidents over time, so really that was that person, and not common).
In the US it is always considered polite to offer food to guests. So, now I'm wondering from which country / countries we got that custom!
It's sad I always offer my therapist a drink when she comes to the house but they are not allowed to accept. I guess they're afraid some of their crazy clients will put something in their drink. Unfortunately something we have to worry about nowadays.

Hmm, okay that's confusing. In Australia a 1 cup measurement is 250ml, so now I have to make sure to check if a recipe that uses 1 cup measurements is talking about US cup or Aus cup.
I think its just trying to give a yanks (if they cared) a rough indicator.... 1 cup remains 250ml in every cooking book ive ever seen... but plug it into google... and 1 US cup is 236.5ml.. but there's also an imperial cup which is 280-ish.... bloody humans and their hatred of standards
Load More Replies...That's so that we don't freak out foreigners with the actual distance.
Load More Replies...I remember when I was a kid, we in the US started to adjust to the metric system (which is why soda is sold in 2 Liter bottles) but along comes Reagan (the start of American stupidity that continues to this day) and puts the kibosh on that.
this isn't that helpful though. I mean saying 1 yd = 0.9144m may be accurate but it makes the metric system look bizarre. Whereas it is because the perspective is taken from the american system. Instead they should use bananas for scale. 1yd = 4 standard bananas, for example
Britain uses both Metric and Imperial interchangeably. We measure temperature in Centigrade, and distance in Miles.
I certainly hope you don't use centigrade for temperatures. Celsius works much better.
Load More Replies...Oh, the joys of the metric system. Look at how regular the intervals and how logical the scale ...
Ooooh! The average male weight in the USA is the weight I wanna get to. Where I live that's considered too much.
Oh wow, the average height and weight of American males seems very mismatched. It would make more sense if the average weight were about 8-10kg lower.
When asked about other ways people can become more travel-savvy, Megan told us she personally thinks that the smartest people are the ones who are flexible. "You can read about scams and money-saving tips all day, but I think it is hard to truly get to know a place if you don't have a Plan B and expect interruptions."
"When you allow for that, you then can assess what you did wrong (or right!) for future trips and you allow yourself to understand the world a bit better," Megan continued. "As a travel blogger, I welcome 'interruptions' on the road as it helps me explain to my readers what 'could' happen, and here is how to do what I didn't do!"
Cool Little Guide I Found
For those asking how the wedge stays up- think of it like 3D. It’s obviously still supported by 2 other sides.
Where was this information when I was competing in the Hunger Games?
for those who don't speak imperial, they mean 30cm, 25cm, and 20cm respectively.
It protects the fire from being blown out or spreading if you're in a windy area. Also helps focus the heat for cooking. And in case it's cold outside, it'll warm the ground area.
Load More Replies...These work fantastic. Very little to no smoke and very efficient. It also gets quite hot pretty quickly. The other plus to this is that the flames, sparks, and hot coals are below ground level keeping the chances of your fire accidentally spreading in dry conditions to a minimum. But please still practice fire safety and make sure that your fire is completely out before breaking camp.
In very windy areas that can blow out fire also if you are in a high fire risk area it can help prevent the spread of fire. I can see it being used for survival. It doesn't need much wood(which can be hard to find), it will better focus heat for cooking boiling water so it done faster and hot can help if it's cold out by warming up the ground. Also easier to keep the heat in a shelter. Only down side to this in survival situation it would be very hard for rescuers to spot to help find you.

Not sure why Japan is so dark...? I am LGBT and have been to Japan, sure Japan is a bit behind in its laws etc, but generally you won't face discrimination (at least as a tourist, obviously I cannot speak for things like workplace discrimination, I wouldn't know) Besides, PDA in Japan is frowned upon even for straight couples, so if you don't go flaunting it anyway, you'll have no issues.
There's a common belief/practice among Japanese and Japanese society called Wa (Wah), and it means harmony. It simply means to be aware of others and they are aware of you. I have ltgbqia+ friends who live and work in Japan, and the way Japanese society carries on is that as long as you are not causing your fellow neighbours grief or disrupt the flow, it's alright by them, however, attitudes still vary. They look for your quality as a person, what is personal and private is kept to ones self and circle. There are ltgbqia+ bars and clubs in Japan, there are even drag bars. Also it depends where you are as well. In places more progressive like Tokyo and Osaka, it's more open, but further out in the countryside you may encounter less tolerance. Don't believe me, watch Midnight Diner on Netflix, transgender, drag, and gay men are featured and no one bats an eye.

I wonder if this could also be said about living there but I'm guessing not. Brazil should be way darker if we were talking about living.
they should do this by region instead of country, i grew up in brasil and i am queer and trans. i have been in some regions and people would compliment my pride apparel and in other regions, i or other queer friends of mine have been violently attacked for things perceived as gay. such as men having and taking care of cats or women having large feet. same with the u.s., the west coast is pretty different than the midwest or south
Not sure why Israel is dark, Tel Aviv in particular is really friendly for LGBT+. Most of the REST of the Middle East, however...
For Your Next Trip: How To Order Coffee In 8 Different Languages
Why the fück is Chinese censored wtf ?!?!? (Edit: they uncensored it )
the funniest thing about that is that the same character is only censored half of the time, and the first censor only covers the right half of it. it just means "to add"
Load More Replies...In French it's avec ou sans sucre, not sucré. Sucré means sweat, sugar is sucre.
Yes and in most "cafés" (I'm not talking about americans chains established in France) we don't use sizes for coffee. There is the "regular" coffee (we just call it "un café") which is an expresso, in a tiny cup generally pretty strong or the "allongé", sometimes called "un américain" (= an american) which is a watered down expresso.
Load More Replies...Spoiler Alert: in italy we don't have coffee sizes. Or better there are few directions: espresso: usually 1 sip big lungo: (long) 2 sips that's it really. If you want the american equivalent of "coffee with milk", you have to order "caffè-latte", otherwise if you order "caffè con latte" is what we call a "macchiato" and it's an espresso with a dash of milk, so 2 sips big :)
maybe it's for people who only ever go to starbucks? :/ (doing this on holiday *in Italy* should be a crime if you ask me)

Load More Replies..."with sugar" pronounciation in the russian panel is german. it should be "s sakharom". but the non-standardized transcriptions are very questionable. people should really learn the proper phonetic script.
German pronunciation broken. Milk is more like "milsh" not "milkh". The final ch there is a fricative-y. Zucker is not zucker (like zuckerberg). It's tsoo-ka. Heiss is not best rendered "heiss", i mean what is the point of doing that? It's pronounced "hice" rhymes with "mice". Same for Klein. It's not pronounced "clane" (does not rhyme with lane). It's pronounced "cline" like the word "incline".
I like how since Arabic is read from right to left, so does the arrangement of the information follow the same layout
Yeahh, we wouldn't say "I wanted a cup of coffee" lol

Travel Etiquette Tips Around The World
Correction for the Asian tip thingy: No tip if in Japan and China. Others will gladly take some extra cash. (Edit: Indonesia is no tip as well. As for Korea, I have lived there for a while before moving and I always gave tips but some people say otherwise)
True about China. And regarding the personal space advice, it seems to be quite the opposite. Chinese don't seem shy at all when it comes to crowding together on trains and buses. Trust me on that one lol
Load More Replies...Prot Tip "Asia" (sure in Japan not sure in the rest of it): Don't stick your chopsticks directly in the rice leaving in there stuck upwords (like, if you have to drink and want to free your hand) as it resembles offerings to the dead during mourning periods and it's considered rude/bad luck People won't really mind, but it's a small thing to remember just in case. It shows respect.
How do you avoid pointing your feet at someone? Genuinely curious what that means on a practical level.
Some examples would be: if sitting on a couch with someone else and you have one leg crossed on the other (ankle on the other knee), make sure your foot is not facing the person sitting next to you. Another would be if someone was sitting opposite you and you put your feet up on a table or ottoman so that the feet face the person opposite you. Avoid that. I hope that helps.

You can talk during a meal. Hand is not an issue if you are using a knife and fork like a westerner. Maybe hand issue applies outside of south africa. Most important thing actually is to acknowledge other people and ask after their health, and wait for an answer, and interact with the answer. IE do not just say "give me 5 packs of cigarettes" or whatever. Start with greetings and health questions. Queue if possible. If others are not queuing, you don't have to. ALWAYS tip generously.

Not really a thing in Finland. If you greet the shopkeeper, they'll think you need help with something. So it's more like: Come in, do your browsing in peace and when you have questions, want to try something or are ready to pay, then you greet the shopkeeper.

It's more a weather thing, not that we simply go back home to have a nap....
It's odd that using your left hand for things would cause a scene. It's a hand. I'm left handed too and the other person who replied to your comment is making me think that being left handed makes you a freak or inappropriate? It makes me sad.

At some point when I visit I will be meeting his wife’s family at a gathering. I’m proud that 🇨🇦 is rated 1st, but for all the countries that got an A, I don’t understand the point system that makes one A a higher “score” than another country A. An A is an A. We do have issues with crimes against individuals, of course. Pride Week is a massive celebration and huge parade. I’m not sure what issues are, but unfortunately police officers who are gay are restricted from being a part of the parade in uniform. Whatever the problems are, I would be so happy if they were resolved and they could be in the parade again. I do realize I may be down voted for that.

As a former road warrior, I was told to use the folding luggage rack (usually found in the closet) to place my luggage on. Put the luggage rack furthest away from upholstered furniture and the bed, and yes, do inspect them as advised here.
Can confirm. Bed bugs suck. But after seeing where people have sued and won modest fortunes maybe risking it isn't such a bad idea. If you want to bypass them best thing to do is stay in nice hotels or nice motels. If you get them at nicer places you're guaranteed to get compensation.
To be very thorough, check in the creases between book pages and in the seams of clothes. It took an invasion in my house (in the US) to learn to check in books. (Long story short, we bought a couch from someone. No one knew the couch was infested. Bugs spread to the bedrooms via books we left lying on the couch.)
ew, the middle of the tile floor in the bathroom does not seem like the most hygienic place either
Dealt with bed bugs in my life. I check sheets for blood stains and around the pillows. Then hope I can get a refund and didn't catch any before I leave.
A Backpacker's Guide To Packing
This reads like something a magazine editor threw together at the last minute to fill a page or segue to some sponsored links. Silk sheets? Really?
Silk also folds down to absolutely nothing so it takes up pretty much no space. If you're traveling in warmer months you wouldn't need to take anything thicker as a cover as it insulates really well. It also dries really fast unlike wool but still maintains some of its warming properties unlike cotton when damp.

Traveling is one of the most enriching experiences we can have on this planet. And remember, it only becomes a headache if you let it. If you feel overwhelmed by the idea of stepping away from familiar routines and fear of embracing the unknown, Megan had a few pieces of advice to share with you.
"Plan ahead, be flexible, and mix a few of your favorite things in the mix with local cultural sites, etc. If you're a wine lover, find some local wine bars to enjoy in the evening. If you love cycling, rent a bike and see the city that way. You'll be in your comfort zone but still see a new place," she concluded.

Be warned: There's a greater chance of dying by dysentery on number eight.
Route 1 goes all the way from the Maine-Canada border to Key West and gives you interesting slices of the US. Feel free to come north of the Statue of Liberty.
"The Lonliest Road" is really only the stretch of US-50 across Nevada, and much of Route 66 is either in disrepair or under new highways, like I-40. The Border-to-Border route (CA-93 and US-93) is rather desolate from Twin Falls ID to Phoenix AZ. I prefer US-191.
The people of Brownsville, TX will be very unhappy that number 3 is designated as the "Road to Nowhere" - you end up in somewhere, namely Brownsville. So, y'know, significantly worse than being nowhere.
We drove from Washington State to Virginia 10 years ago, took us 5 days with stops and it was the best road trip. I love driving through Utah’s canyon, the Colorado Rockies, West Virginia etc. I’d love to do it again.

Countries Where You Can Drink Tap Water
We drink tap water in South Africa - we even drink it right out of the hose while watering the garden!
What they mean is for visitors. In many countries the level of purity is lower so certain bacteria is in the water. If your raised with it you have an immunity but those from outside the area can get seriously sick. My dad knew a couple that got ice in a drink in Mexico in their honeymoon and ended up in the hospital.
Load More Replies...I‘m pretty sure you’re not supposed to drink tap water in Flint, Michigan.
Was wondering if anyone would say this. Glad you did!
Load More Replies...Tolerance is a factor here. Locals might drink the tap water in Brazil, but that doesn't mean you should. The sudden change of metals and microbes might give you a bad stomach for a few days. Long term you would get used to it of course. Having lived in a few countries my experience is that if there's a large, reasonably wealthy middle class - they've usually got the water sorted out!
There are a TON of places in the US where you should absolutely not drink the tap water.
Safe to drink tap water in USA is debatable. For example, Flint, Michigan. There are municipalities where tap water is better compared to neighboring municipality in same state. My city provides best clean tap water, 32 miles out in another city my cousins can’t use their tap water for drinking. Painting whole USA as safe for drinking tap water is dishonest especially because travelers will naturally have their guards down in western countries compared to eastern countries.
Totally agree. I’m fine drinking my tap water in my city, but I would NOT drink tap water in any rural area in my state since it is often well water that has a ton of softener or other chemicals in it and it often it smells disgusting. Think rotten eggs/sulphuric. Most places in the US, I’ve been fine with tap water unless specifically told not to, or if it is heavily chlorinated.
Load More Replies...Bosnia&Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia, Macedonia... perfectly drinkable and perfectly safe. Also, tasty!
It's just prejudice. America is the best (even though there are literally regions with lead pipes and most americans don't drink tap water) while Balkans and eastern Europe is almost third world to them. 🙄 Btw, I'm going for a holiday in Montenegro, Bosnia & Hercegovina in a few days and can't wait! 😊
Load More Replies...Uhm, South African here. I live off tap water. I'd say, it's best to ask before drinking. In most places, the water is perfectly safe and tastes gooood.
I lived in Pretoria for three months. Never had an issue with the tap water. When i had to go to the northern rural areas, I would bring bottled water with me. Same was true when living in Kampala, Nairobi, Adis Ababa, etc. Most cities have their water sorted. I did get a stomach bug in Cairo though. Not sure it was water.

I drank tap water (as the local do) in Benin, Togo, Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco and Namibia with no issues as well as in Chile, Argentina, Peru, Turkey, etc. What the hell is this chart ???
meanwhile, many US cities have lead pipes and most Americans drink only bottled because they don't trust the tap anyway. but yet the whole country is "safe" in this map while other are probably unjustly slandered (I find it hard to believe that all of Africa and Asia have unsafe water, wth). I wonder who made the map. :/

Travel Packing Do's And Don'ts
Airports are highly over priced for everything. Go to a local shop in town, instead.
I always pack a couple extra outfits in my carryon in case my checked bag gets delayed. And always, always, always pack your meds in your carryon, and pack more medicine than what you think you'll need for your trip.
Ah, how about medications???? They're a must for some of us!!! Also Paracetamol, and inhalers. Tissues and sanitary products (if you need them).
On plastic bags, remember not to travel with them to Kenya as you could be fined.
Make sure the country you're visiting allows plastic bags. Some countries like Kenya have banned them and will fine you per bag. I'd suggest using a cloth bag instead.
I could be missing something here, please don't downvote me... But, wouldn't the clothes get wrinkled when you unroll them?
Supposedly rolling creates fewer wrinkles than folding because there aren't sharp creases, and compresses better to fit more.

Load More Replies...In Rome and essentially in all Italian cities: - to avoid pickpockets, always keep your wallet in an inner pocket. Keep your essential items (passport, most cash, credit card) in a hidden and/or buttoned pocket or in those special belts. Always carry bags with zippers and keep them close. If someone wants to sell you something on the streets it's most likely a scam; ignore them. If someone stops you asking something or whatever, treat them like they are a scam; ignore them and go your own way. Don't "act like a tourist" and forget the good measures you'd take at home; you may be on holiday but the pickpocketers are working. - Public restrooms are rare to find. Use the restroom whenever you can (restaurants, museum) but if you are really in need, you can enter a bar and buy a coffee or gums and ask to use their bathroom ("posso usare il bagno?"). It's not compulsory but it's just common courtesy.
When I was reading the infographic, I thought the "hai spicci" translation said, "Do you have orange?" XD I was like, "Wow, oranges must be really good in Italy!"
So if I go in a Roman bar, I'm supposed to say hello to, like, EVERYONE? I can't even do that in my hometown. Maybe I'll just wear a gimp mask with the zipper closed and a locked collar around my neck. The things I'll do to not have to be forced into socialization...
Your odds of crossing the street are pretty much equal anywhere. Crosswalks are sort of a suggestion.

Load More Replies...So: british empire in 1900 plus japan: left. Rest of world: right.
Driving on the right is downright dangerous, I bet there's tons more fatal accidents :p
Why would driving on the right be any more dangerous
Load More Replies...The reason we drive on the left in the UK goes back to before cars, when people rode horses. It means that someone coming towards you passes you on your right so if you needed to draw your sword they were in the best position to attack/ defend against. This sword etiquette goes back to the time of knights, and left handed people couldn't be knights so weren't considered.
I remember in Cars 2, Mater was driving on the right side of the road in UK, while commenting "Why is everybody on the wrong side of the road?"
All the left driving ones are former British colonies. Minus Japan. I don't know what their deal is.
But all bets are off driving round L' Arc de Triomphe in Paris. Was told many years ago that insurance companies don't pay out for accidents there. Also various countries road use is more a free for all or Battle Royale. Right or left side? Forget it, just don't hit the cows
Well many of the early cars were produced as right hand drive, and considering that a lot of countries use a left to right reading style, driving on the left seems more intuitive
If the road is twisty enough going through the mountains I drive on both sides. More fun that way.
I remember going to the British Virgin Islands twice, and we saw at least 5 cars on the ‘wrong’ side of the road each time. Even my parents initially drove on the wrong side. And traffic circles are even more confusing.
Not just BVI. I did that once or twice when we've visited St. Croix. Not for long, but first time pulling out of the driveway of the AirBnB in the morning I forgot a couple times.

A Guide To Off Season Travel In Countries Around The World

Why on earth is that woman in Australia vacuuming the beach with popcorn? Is that some sort of off-season tradition? :)
Load More Replies...Actually that's not totally accurate for Spain. First it depends on when the Holy Week/ Easter falls, then it depends on how cold or warm the year is. That's why some years in March it's already high season and in October it can be over... Or not...

I had a chat about this with a few friends from different countries. They were telling me all these lovely things about their countries and I was very surprised. Some are not safe. Point being, the government over exaggerates the danger of some countries.
Recent terrorist attacks in France and the UK downgrade it past the almost weekly mass shootings from their south-of-the-border friends? Wild.
It depends on where you travel in Russia. Moscow and other large cities are very safe from my experience. I would say the same about Sri Lanka where I lived for 10 years

It's silly - we used to call Mumbai Bombay and Beijing Peking after mispronouncing the names with a FOREGIN FRICKIN' ALPHABET. Worse yet is you have characters like "ng" used in place of a "wu" sound. There are several good reasons to just use the phonetic or natives' pronunciation for foreign places.

A Guide To Pet Travel
I've heard of too many pets dying on planes. I do not trust how animal crates are handled. Would be surprised if they are just tossed about. On long haul flights, your animal will likely not be fed or given any water. They are scared and will not be comforted. Any medical crisis your pet might endure will not be tended to. There is a chance they will get lost like luggage. Best to leave with someone who can take care of them.
My cat has separation issues ( rescue ). Though it pained me and him , did not take with specifically because of this. Airline rep was bad before, but now with all the luggage issues. Sorry kitty.
Load More Replies...I do not understand airlines cannot have a designated pet carrier area where the carriers can be secured for turbulence and have access to be checked on periodically and offered water,at least. Also, pressure and temperature controlled like people. More and more people are travelling with pets. Get a clue airlines and airports.
Border control is not the same for pets as people in the US. I frequent the US-Mexican border with my dog. No one has ever asked for his papers.

You could also just get an Apple Air Tag and put it in your luggage so you can track it wherever it is. We just used the Apple Air Tag when we were moving my daughter from another state so we could keep track of where all of her stuff was with the moving company. It was SUPER helpful!
I don't think this ever got approved... They banned and stopped selling those suitcases with a built in battery and USB port over fire concerns.

Also, you need to mention voltage here, usa uses 110v whereas the rest use 220v

don‘t use ATM in japan on weekends and holidays. they charge an extra fee. (no it does not make sense and it is annoying). also depending on fees your bank takes for getting money from an ATM in a foreign country, it might be better to exchange some money in your home country.
Take the scans/photos of your documents and wallet contents (all ID and front/back of credit cards*). Put a password on the jpg or png files, attach to an email, and send it to yourself...or even better, leave it in your draft folder without an email address. If you loose your phone and bags, you can still access your information from any computer or a friend's phone. * the back of most credit cards have phone numbers so you can cancel stolen/lost cards, and order new ones if needed.

This is racist. We should issue a travel advisory against USA because you guys have a tendency to shoot schools up and invade random muslim countries. Should mark USA as red.
How come New Zealand gets Level 3? Kiwis don't tote guns and the islands don't get earthquakes every day.
Japan has restrictions related to covid when it comes to foreign travellers (tests, quarantine, vaccination, medical insurance etc); also, it's been closed to foreign tourists for the last two years and only recently started to accept group tours and only under strict conditions.

This is also not accurate. There's substantially more danger to your safety in some of these countries than in others marked green. It also depends on your identity. If you "look rich" you are safer in some countries than others. It's fairly clear if you look at this map that the countries that france colonised (it's a french map) are marked as dangerous. I wonder why that is, maybe because the people there still resent you as a colonist? I mean look at it. All the muslim countries except saudi, and french indo-china, plus francophone africa. How about just apologise for colonialism and decommission the CAF currency exploitation?

A Traveler’s Guide To Tap Water
The question here is "Safe, to whom?" Locals usually drink tap water without issue. Visitors, whose stomachs are used to a specific type of water (there is soft, hard, treated, untreated, etc) can have problems processing the local water. I know places that have water coming out of the tap that is more pure and clean than bottled water and yet visitors get stomach problems...
Umm we have safe water in India and Pakistan :/ Where the hell does this data come from? I have a feeling the data is a tad bit wrong
I drank tap water in russia and it was fine. I live in africa and drink tap water every day. This is nonsense.
I live in Hungary, and the quality of the drinking water is absolutely safe, I don't know where these data come from
This is wrong. Lithuania has safe drinking water. I would not drink it from some kind of random village house tap, but in the cities water is clean and safe.
That makes me so sad. Easy access to clean drinking water should be a basic human right.
This isn't a map of places with no access to clean drinking water. These maps show where their makers would have stomach issues if they would drink water from the tap. The locals usually don't have those issues.

Passport Power: How The Wealth Of Your Country Determines Your Travel Freedom
I love charts and graphs (I even mentioned it in my bio), but these were just boring... Especially the dozens of posts on power sockets
This was a tad bit racist. Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, and Nepal and many others all have drinkable water and are mostly safe to travel to, and yet the data says otherwise. However, many of the “Safest” countries aren’t safe at all, but I feel that they were ranked that way because they were a European country. I’m taking this post with a grain of salt.
Indian here. We prefer boiling water. Outsiders will find it tough. But water is not bad. Safe is as safe you keep yourself. Of course, travelling in India as a single person esp. woman can be dicey. I have seen many foreigners esp. from Europe or America can be too trusting. No idea why.

If you are ANY person however you must not go out at night alone or walk streets alone as there are lots of poor people who might think you have money. This is commonsense logic in a country where lots of people are desperate! Honestly these maps just perpetuate the racist myth of africa is a dark continent full of scary people . I hate it. Just keep away from slums, this is commonly understood world-wide.
